    I like to see how Samyang evolve as a mature lens maker. They implemented autofocus, linear motor, and now weather sealing. So they're now pretty on par with other major 3rd party lens manufacturers in terms of usability, but I hope more. Sigma pursuits optical perfection with their Art series, and Tamron made a good compromise of size , image quality and useful features with their G2 SP primes and FE zooms. I hope Samyang have their unique color. So, highly regard their small, light, slow aperture lens like 35 2.8, 24 2.8, and upcoming 45 1.8. Even though the 35 and 24 has some weaknesses. I hope 45 1.8 made a balanced compromise as this 85 1.4.
    Nice work as always, Justin. Thanks from the deep heart.
    P.S. Your point about the spherical aberration and the bokeh is valid. Nikon 105 & 135 F2 Defocus Control lens can under-correct and over-correct spherical aberration to achieve soft and busy bokeh in one lens.

    Thanks for another incredible review, Dustin! I think you are quite possibly the best lens reviewer on RUclips. Love your thorough and balanced approach to testing lenses. Your reviews let viewers form their own opinions based on the facts you put forth, rather than force a strong opinion on them. Excellent work!

      Dustin Abbott is better than George Lucas at Trilogy's. His next Trilogy chapters are "Sony: Our New Hope", "Return of the Samyang's" and "The Rise of Tamron".
      I can't wait for 2021 when his new Trilogy starts off with a bang called "Nikon Strikes Back".

    I bought this lens, along with the 45mm samyang upon watching your reviews. I must say, right now I own the Tamron 28-75, the samyang 45 1.8, the samyang 35 2.8, and this 85 1.4 - and the 85 is the best lens I have ever used. I can't describe it! It feels like driving a Ferrari. It's a step above everything else. There's just something different about it. And the images it produces are amazing. Thank you Dustin!

    I was getting bored with the Sigma ART 50mm f/1.4. Good lens, the image quality is there, AF is there, but the 50mm look didn't do it for me, so I started considering my next move. Either save up for the GM 85 (which I've rented before and tested) or the GM 135, or something cheaper... like this.
    You, sir, are responsible for my purchase of this lens.
    Apart from the lens behaving and delivering images with the qualities you've listed in your review, there is one odd advantage to that lens that I found for myself when shooting an evening event with disgustingly bad lighting. The rule of thumb being "shoot at shutter speed 2x your focal length", I as often as not was getting blurred images with the Sigma even at 1/100s, but with the Samyang, being WAY more comfortable and balanced, I was able to shoot sharp, non blurred images even at 1/30s.
    Reviewing the images, I almost thought that Samyang are such good guys that they put IS inside the lens without telling anyone about it, but apparently it's just light and well balanced enough.
    AF was tricky, especially in the very bad light, but it was something I could work with, and in better light it behaves as well as I need it to. And considering this is something that can be improved via software, for me this lens easily offers greater price to performance ratio even than the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8.
    Once again, your reviews are exceptional, sir, and thank you for bringing them to us.

    Excellent review as always, thank you so much! A quick question: I’ve seen other reviews where the lens really struggles with video af, keeps hunting or just completely misses focus. Did you experience anything like that when tracking subjects with afc?

    I'm sold! Just ordered a "well used" one on Adorama for $569 and am hoping it's functionally and optically like new. I'm impressed you didn't encounter the pulsing AF that a Japanese reviewer found even with the latest lens firmware. Actually Samyang admitted on their website that their latest lens firmware (v3.0?) has issues and is no longer being made available until they clear up the issues. At least they're committed to improving things! Thanks again for all your excellent reviews!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +1

      First of all, I haven't yet tested the Sony 85 1.8 (I plan to do a shootout this summer), but I have a lot of familiarity with 85mm lenses, and I would say the Samyang is almost certainly going to be the more special portrait lens.

  • @JoshStreetDesign
    @JoshStreetDesign 5 лет назад +1

    Hey Dustin, I commented on your other video and wanted to follow up. So if we're talking real world, I shot a 10 hour wedding yesterday and used this Samyang for a fair number of shots on the A7R3. Overall it performed better than I thought it would when it came to AF. Eye AF performed quite well too and most of my shots were in perfect focus. The color it produced is rich and vibrant, but when you're shooting raw most lenses are fairly similar in that regard these days. Here's my one issue with it that none of your test images show. Yesterday it was pure blue skies here in Jersey, brutal sun at 4pm for the outside ceremony. I have been looking past my canon 85 1.2ii for these outside scenarios because of the fringing and aberration that happens at 1.2. When shooting people at 1.4-2.0 at a distance of about 10-15 feet, there is this aberration that surrounds the subjects heads against lighter backgrounds. It happens a lot, especially when using a cto AD200 as a backlight to create fake sunlight and such. (I'm a huge OCF guy) This is one of my signature looks and always creates stunning imagery. But after using the fringing reduction option in lightroom it leaves this gray outline around their heads sometimes. Not a huge issue but I notice it. Was really hoping this samyang doesn't do that, but sadly it does this same thing as well. So basically it fringes like most 85s, not quite as bad though. Overall I like the lens....still on the fence if I will keep it though. If I didn't have the Canon on MC-11 I would DEF keep it and I recommend it wholeheartedly over the 85GM. It's like 95% of that lens. Thanks for your reviews!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +1

      That's great anecdotal feedback. This lens actually has slightly better CA control than a number of 85mm alternatives. I would recommend that (if you keep it), you shoot those type shots at F2.8, which should eliminate essentially all the fringing that you describe. The lens actually does really well with Eye AF (surprisingly so, actually).

    • @JoshStreetDesign
      @JoshStreetDesign 5 лет назад

      @@DustinAbbottTWI So I just wanted to give you a quick followup. So I shot another wedding with this lens, and used the canon 85 1.2 ii as well. As I went through all of the photos afterwards on the 38" 4k monitor, it was clear to me which where which. The canon just provides a look that the Samyang and Sony GM cannot match. Not to be cliche, but they really do have more of a dreamy/artistic look. I ended up returning the Samyang. Shot another wedding this weekend and the Canon performed perfectly all day on the A7Riii. In fact, I don't think I had one single shot out of focus via the MC-11.

  • @JohnBelknap
    @JohnBelknap 5 лет назад +3

    Would you choose the Samyang 35, 50 and 85 over the Sigma?

    • @MrJAM-np7go
      @MrJAM-np7go 5 лет назад +1

      For 35, I'd use Sigma because their weight is similar and have same magnification ratio. But Sigma has way better quality control. Even in my country, the price differnce is about $20 after getting promotion.
      For 50 and 85, it depends. If you pursuit the sharpness from corner to coners at wide open, the Art prime excels compared to everything else. And the price is quite reasonable. But they are bulky and heavy and not cheap in absolute term. Samyang lenses have nicer bokeh and cheaper price tag, and it is quite important factors for someone.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +3

      I would choose the 85 for sure, possibly the 35, and Sigma for the 50.

      I haven’t used the Sony 35mm, so I can’t comment there. I personally really like the Planar 50mm. As for the 85mm lenses - the Sony will deliver better autofocus performance and the Samyang will give you softer bokeh and more separation of your subject from the background.

    Dustin, currently in the UK both the Sony 85mm f1.8 and the Samyang 85mm f1.4 are going to market for £599. When I shoot I tend to look for sharpness of image across frame, contrast and colour rendering more than necessarily needing that f-stop. Would I be better off getting the Sony or should I get the Samyang?

      I haven't used the GM yet, so I can't comment there. I would personally choose it over the Sigma, as I believe that lens to be too large for practical, everyday use and I like the overall rendering from the Samyang better.

    Great job Dustin, I enjoy your reviews, very well done. Ok now with that said . . . I'm about to purchase a 85mm, and trying to make up my mind on one of three. The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8,.. this one here the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 and the Tokina ATX-M 85mm f/1.8 FE (I have the Tokina FiRIN 20mm f/2.0 FE MF and I love it). The question that I need to ask is, can I shoot with any or all in a manual mode and not have infinity focus thrown off by .. 'fly or fire by wire' .. like I had happen all the time with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 crop lens I once had while shooting stars at night. ... I know right now what you are thinking ... I know this (85mm) is first a portrait lens. I shoot landscape mostly and been getting more with time interested in doing portraits. My first love of photography is shooting the stars, Milky Way, Auroras and with foreground/mountains. Besides portraits I wish to use the 85mm set up on my Sony a7s a Equatorial Tracker ... to lower iso, longer exposure, numerous images then stack them in post .. to bring out detail and color of Nebula's. Call me crazy, but thats me. .. Sorry for this being too long, but I think you know what I hope you can help me with. I want one that can shoot in full manual mode besides auto-focus. I am aware that the Sony lens has a AF/MF switch . . . I thank you in advance kind Sir

    Hi, loved your video ! You really are one of the best reviewers on YT. I could use a bit of your advice :
    I have a sony a7riii and I have been using it with vintage lenses so far. I am thinking about buying my first FE glass and I cannot decide on which kit I would go for. I am hesitating between buying the samyang AF 85mm 1.4 + sony 24mm 1.4, or just buying the tamron 28-75 f2.8 for now (better for my wallet haha). What do you think ? (I do mostly street and travel photography)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад

      I would personally start with the Tamron. It is just so good at so many things, and will cover a big chunk of your needs. You can specialize after that.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for advice! I'll go with the tamron and start saving up for the 24 and 85 in the meantime.

    Do you have any idea where to download Samyang AF 85mm f1.4 Auto Focus Lens update for Nikon F Mount Cameras

      In theory, that would be here: www.samyanglens.com/en/support/support-download.php?type=3&model=NIKONF. I don't see any updates for it, though.

    I've recently got the Sigma 30mm 1.4 on my sony a6400 crop body. I've been thinking about getting the sony 50mm 1.8, (or 85mm) or maybe this 85mm Rokinon AF. The Sigma 56mm 1.4 is of course calling my name because it's a no brainer. I am thinking ahead for when I one day upgrade to a full frame sony body (most likely). nonetheless, I realize there's a big difference between a 50mm and 85mm lens on a crop sensor. but I've thought about skipping the Sigma 56mm and going to a lens that can work on a ff body. so many decisions!!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +1

      That is a tough call. I guess it primarily depends on how serious you are about switching to full frame. If you are serious, then this lens is a good route to go.

    Price aside, does the Sony 85 f/1.4 focus (much) faster/more accurate that the Samyang (cause I hear that for a first 'party lens' its AF is not that great) and is its IQ on par / only slightly worst or a large IQ gap?

    Thanks for doing such a great review!
    I'm really tied between the Samyang AF 85mm f1.4, and the Sony 85mm f1.8.
    I like everything about the Samyang, but I like the slightly smaller form factor of the Sony and I've heard the AF is slightly better too.
    I shoot portraits, weddings, landscapes, and sports, but only part time, and can't really justify purchasing the GM 85mm f1.4.
    My only real concern is AF speed in AFC shooting for example the bride walking down the isle or her dancing with her father.
    I just can't miss shots like that, but I want to use the 1.4 instead of my 70-200 2.8 for that extra creamy subject separation.
    What do you think Dustin?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +1

      Watch my 85mm comparison series, and it will probably help you make that decision. I own the Samyang and love it, but the Sony is also a very good lens.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI definitely years ago I’d used canon mkii, mkiii and used all the L series primes which were magnificent at the time, however now using the mirrorless system A7iii with a few beautiful vintage lens at f2-2.8 and sigma art lens 2.8 24-70mm and samyang 85mm f1.4 it’s very quick, pulses as you say somewhat in those high contrast areas, though using centre, multi and or flexi focus points certainly reduces that. Not to mention using it in bright day possible shots as it’s only f1.4-16 fitting a good ND2-4 certainly can keep it not only sharp, details but retaining the beautiful portrait photography requirements.
      Really appreciate your reviews, tips, big fan from Australia

      The Tamron might still be a little better (less micropulsing in AF-C mode), but not by much. This is a very good focusing lens.
