I truly think that Adam and Scarlett gave the performances of their careers in this film. It seems so under appreciated by casual audiences. I know the critical acclaim was phenomenal, but this film deserved so much more publicity and advertising than what it received.

this is an excellent breakdown. I have said multiple times that Marriage Story is the best movie I've ever seen that I will never watch again. It is one of the most realistic and heart wrenching movies ever made.
It really is - for someone happily married fir the first time, I found this realistic, heartbreaking and pretty terrifying as I was able to imagine myself divorcing - not because it’s on the cards, but because I 100% related to the characters. Pretty much the definition of filmmaking genius.
Most heart wrenching movie ever made? Umm. Wealthy White privileged people divorcing is not even close to heart wrenching considering the many movies made of oppression, racism, slavery, poverty, child molestation, Sex trafficking etc… SO many more powerful movies way way more heart wrenching than this film.

She's tried for so many years to be seen as more than her looks that I can imagine it's why she never wears makeup or does her hair in this movie. I can't imagine how frustrating it was for her to be taken seriously. She was phenomenal in this movie.

I love your articulate and artistic focus on the female manipulation of another female. Female manipulation has had a higher success rate, strangely enough, on me than males. Male manipulation is way easier to pick up on, where female manipulation involves emotions and empathy. I’m fine now and love the males and females in my life now, tho 💗

The costume design here is brilliant. The shoes alone are minimum $600. Anyone who knows the brand, Louboutin, would know they’re expensive and uncomfortable. And they’re not just black or nude, which would be more subtle; They’re scarlet red. The costume designer, and by proxy, Laura Dern’s character, wants us to notice the shoes. In any red carpet even, those shoes are high end and impractical. The fact that she describes her outfit as “shleppy” tells us all we need to know.
Wow. As someone who considers themselves both a film-lover and a writer, I tend to focus so much on the script that I often overlook the directing, editing, and cinematography. Your essays are eye-opening. Please keep up the good work!
One thing that really caught my attention with this movie was the movement/blocking. Most notable is the scene where Scarlett Johannessen meets Laura Dern in her office. I saw somewhere that it was set to look like an onstage play and that’s exactly what comes through in that scene. I don’t normally catch things like that, but this was so unique.
As an aspiring filmmaker, I find that I most often pay attention to the directing. Awesome scripts really are essential but I think without good directing, even the best script cannot pull off a great movie.

Having been divorced when my kids were little was painful. Watching this film brought it all back 30 years later. The lawyers destroyed my relationship with my ex husband. Before the lawyers, we were doing really well with the transition.

This movie is one of those that seem to get better with each watch. The pain and the laughs while watching is always hard to handle bc it all feels so real! Great great video, love listening to ppl talk about things I love!
It was my top 3 films of that year, but only watched once because of all the emotional heaviness. I only felt that Nora was not entirely sincere, but your breakdown really dives deep in to the methods used. At that state, Nicole just truly wanted someone who took "her side". Even her family members appreciated Charlie and she felt powerless. Nora's manipulation was somewhat wrong, but it did gave Nicole the strengths to regain her power.
I’m afraid to watch this movie after being married for 10 years and divorced recently. The pain is still raw. Revolutionary Road gave me a panic attack. Awesome essay tho.

I’m currently in the same boat and I had to fast forward through some of the scenes because it’s was too raw, real, and painful. That’s how you know it’s an incredible movie because it makes you uncomfortable from the realness.

I had brought this movie up saying how great I thought it was to a group of aspiring actors/ theater students, and they all shot me down saying the movie was cliche and that it was to by the book. Having been a child who witnessed my parents relationship devolve strikingly similar to this movie, I stand by my opinion that this movie is so so good and breaks my heart every time
Like most I came from a broken home, suicide attempts, emotional abuse, verbal abuse and sometimes physical. I witnessed two grown adults destroy themselves, each other, their children and the family. It changed my brain forever. I watched this and felt that little child all over again. Utterly terrifying. This movie is a fabulous education tool, for how hurt people hurt people and create the same madness generations over, if self actuality is not present. As for the telling end result of exposure to adverse childhood experiences, all children within my family have chosen no children of their own. The cycle ends with us, end story.

Same! I can see Nora being fully controlled of the situation but doesn’t seem manipulative with the derogatory sense that goes with it. She is there to help Nicole, with much more experience in such situations.

Kind of determined for getting her client what she deserves (even without knowing the full story) and not willing to get emotionally involved. I see her as what she's shown to be.. a ruthless divorce lawyer... I disagree with the entire review of the creator.. I saw it completely different.. that's the beauty of cinema or story telling. The painting behind Nora is so interesting. It's of two people watching another visual art-piece and there is a 3rd chair that's empty. I wonder what it truly means but I think it's symbolic of how shrewd & manipulative lawyers like Nora show clients like Nicole an entirely different view of their own marriage modifying each & every detail & making the person feel like their marriage was a sham when really it just needed some work. What if Nicole and Charlie had continued their sessions with the marriage counselor, as shown in the beginning of the film? Maybe their marriage wouldn't reach the point of divorce if they had given it an honest and dedicated chance.

It concerns me that I didn't notice that Nora was intentionally manipulating Nicole, and I wonder how much my autism makes me vulnerable to being manipulated in every day life because I can't pick up on social cues that are apparently very obvious to NTs. Even re-watching this I was straining my brain to detect the dishonesty in Nora and I kept coming up with an internal error message because her behavior looked 'just like' someone I would assume to be sincere.
I felt the same way and I’m NT (as far as I know lol)… I loved the film and thought Nora was sincere. I never got a hint of manipulation in this scene. (After all, she’s her lawyer? What does she have to gain?)
That’s because Nora displays some strong covert narcissistic traits. She’s quite skilled at influencing and playing with people’s emotions for her own gain, but she’s also remarkably good at concealing these traits, even from neurotypicals (which I’m not, by the way; I’m also autistic). So, yes, autistic people might find themselves more vulnerable to the influence of narcissistic individuals, especially when they have hyper-empathy. What really helped me protect myself and break free from these types of relationships was educating myself about narcissism. It was quite beneficial because being autistic makes me good at picking patterns. This allowed me to escape from unhealthy relationships and understand how true empathy looks like.
i'm not neurodivergent but i still had issues seeing her as a manipulator, maybe except of the part where she says she's dressed badly and it cuts to nicole wearing very casual clothes, that did feel a bit "icky", if you will. but everything else feels even now, somewhat sincere yet professional. now i'm worried abt how i read people lol
This whole scene has its own layers and definition I am someone too who loves to dissect scenes according to each character's approach so this video was really a great insight.

I actually don't really agree with that. Yeah, she's very aware of how things are going to go. But in the end, she never lied about anything to her client, she just did her job. She got the best result as well, otherwise, mother and son might not have been able to stay in L.A. together. I really liked the contrast between her and the other lawyer as well.

This was a great movie, but painful to watch. Everyone who was in this movie really killed their parts. The argument scene in the living room brought me to tears. That fight felt REAL! I just stumbled across this channel after I saw your take on Maestro. I felt that movie was pretentious and had that “Oscar bait” feel to it as well. I watched this movie before I knew I was heading to a separation. It made me sob uncontrollably! Now that it’s happening, it’s just so accurate to the experience of it, even when my split is not this contentious!
It’s incredible to see Scarlet Johansson play as the “underdog” to Nora when Scarlet is literally defined as having the most perfect and symmetrical face *I’m not saying symmetry makes someone beautiful, the statement of her being defined is what I’ve read in the media about Scarlet. I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder and our differences + diversity is what make us beautiful
Everything is relative. I think Scarlett is beautiful but "most perfect face" is an exaggeration. This Hollywood notion of "there can only be one" is weird to me. We have women like Aishwarya Rai on this same earth as well.
The whole "face symmetry = beauty" thing has always confused me. It just seems like an OCD thing. Edit: Don't get me wrong, ScarJo is HOT but I ain't lookin at her symmetry.
Nora's comment on why she wanted 51% on the custody later in the movie, proves that to her, it's not about what Nicole wants, it's about her winning. Laura Dern is awesome, loved her since jurassic park. (she's awesome there too, in a different way.)

I've been wanting to watch this film for a while but have been very nervous that it looks really heavy. Some of the clips I've seen remind me of experiences from my 1st marriage. How subtly and sometimes suddenly, things can turn from warm intimate love, into sadness, grief and even bitter hate at points. We are good friends now that we are divorced, I'm happy to say. This was a thoughtful and sincere essay. I love that you made that beautiful portrait and shared it with us. I may just take a deep breath and put this film on tonight.
This was an excellent analysis and you actually helped me see what I liked about this movie. I remember when I watched it I was left with an odd feeling. It was really bittersweet and contradictory. I realize now that I absolutely love the director's work and that what feels off to me at least are some of the performances. For some reason, and although she does a terrific job of exploring shades, levels, moods, tones, etc., I feel that SJ approaches some really dense traits of her character only on surface. There are times in which there is a mismatch between text/script and how it impacts her character. I see something similar in AD's performance. There is a cleanliness to this couple that is at times difficult to see the weigh of theater frustration and the desire of "making it" without compromising your beliefs about theater, acting and the arts. However, I can see how the director's choices still conveyed the message. I kinda wanna watch it again now, honestly. Thank you! Keep doing these reviews!
Divorces can get so messy, sometimes we choose the wrong people and end up paying so much for these choices, or sometimes we really do not have the skills to talk to each other, we cant see beyond our egos, I think we can depend too much on our partners for validation, today life has become so lonely, and women especially are missing out on genuine female friendships which can off set the burden of meeting all the needs by one individual...

all the video essays i see about this film talk about the fighting scene between charlie and nicole, but it was so intriguing and refreshing to see a breakdown of this scene instead. it made me view nora as more of an antagonist, which i had never really done before. phenomenal video, great job. Professionals like Nora have validated the emotions and supported many women through difficult life transitions. In this economy, everyone needs to make a living though. Divorce lawyers equip themselves to deal with emotional people as well as logical ones (hence the tissues), therapists also need to “conveniently” keep tissues around as well, such is the nature of the job. I loved Nora’s character in that she reminded me of the woman who shows up with the ability to ground another woman in the reality she is facing, this is hard to do when you’re wrapped up in the emotions. I feel as though this take villainized her, where the villain of this film was the toxicity between Charlie and Nicole.
I agree that this is only one take on the scene. While the lawyer clearly was trying to land a client, any woman watching this can ALSO see that she has genuine sympathy, and has heard this story again and again.
This film is perfect in so many ways, starting with the cast. This film real shows how talented is Scarlett and Adam really are and how choosing the movies to be in is so important to show this.

this is an excellent breakdown. I have said multiple times that Marriage Story is the best movie I've ever seen that I will never watch again. It is one of the most realistic and heart wrenching movies ever made.
It really is - for someone happily married fir the first time, I found this realistic, heartbreaking and pretty terrifying as I was able to imagine myself divorcing - not because it’s on the cards, but because I 100% related to the characters. Pretty much the definition of filmmaking genius.

Wealthy White privileged people divorcing is not even close to heart wrenching considering the many movies made of oppression, racism, slavery, poverty, child molestation, Sex trafficking etc… SO many more powerful movies way way more heart wrenching than this film.
2:54 This point is so important not only for Nicole, the character, but also Scarlett, the actress. She's tried for so many years to be seen as more than her looks that I can imagine it's why she never wears makeup or does her hair in this movie. I can't imagine how frustrating it was for her to be taken seriously. She was phenomenal in this movie.
And in Her. She's just a voice, no visuals of her at all, and she's brilliant!

This makes no sense, she specifically got a nose job IN ORDER TO GET PRETTY GIRL roles. Gotta love when people project their own beliefs or fall for some party line they read in an interview. She was kind of plain as a child and prettied herself up bc Hollywood demands that of leading ladies, agents tell them to change this and that if they want to get that role. How ridiculous.
I love your articulate and artistic focus on the female manipulation of another female. Female manipulation has had a higher success rate, strangely enough, on me than males. Male manipulation is way easier to pick up on, where female manipulation involves emotions and empathy. I’m fine now and love the males and females in my life now, tho 💗

The costume design here is brilliant. The shoes alone are minimum $600. Anyone who knows the brand, Louboutin, would know they’re expensive and uncomfortable. And they’re not just black or nude, which would be more subtle; They’re scarlet red. The costume designer, and by proxy, Laura Dern’s character, wants us to notice the shoes. In any red carpet even, those shoes are high end and impractical. The fact that she describes her outfit as “shleppy” tells us all we need to know.
Wow. As someone who considers themselves both a film-lover and a writer, I tend to focus so much on the script that I often overlook the directing, editing, and cinematography. Your essays are eye-opening. Please keep up the good work!
One thing that really caught my attention with this movie was the movement/blocking. Most notable is the scene where Scarlett Johannessen meets Laura Dern in her office. I saw somewhere that it was set to look like an onstage play and that’s exactly what comes through in that scene. I don’t normally catch things like that, but this was so unique.
As an aspiring filmmaker, I find that I most often pay attention to the directing. Awesome scripts really are essential but I think without good directing, even the best script cannot pull off a great movie.

Having been divorced when my kids were little was painful. Watching this film brought it all back 30 years later. The lawyers destroyed my relationship with my ex husband. Before the lawyers, we were doing really well with the transition.
It’s wild how your ideas and memories can be twisted by somebody else so horribly when it comes to them enriching themselves.
Lawyers didn't do it, you or your ex husband did it by saying yes to whatever lawyers advised you.

This movie is one of those that seem to get better with each watch. The pain and the laughs while watching is always hard to handle bc it all feels so real! Great great video, love listening to ppl talk about things I love!
It was my top 3 films of that year, but only watched once because of all the emotional heaviness. I only felt that Nora was not entirely sincere, but your breakdown really dives deep in to the methods used. At that state, Nicole just truly wanted someone who took "her side". Even her family members appreciated Charlie and she felt powerless. Nora's manipulation was somewhat wrong, but it did gave Nicole the strengths to regain her power.
This is how I feel about Fleabag, brilliant, emotional, funny but I could only go through it twice😅
I’m afraid to watch this movie after being married for 10 years and divorced recently. The pain is still raw. Revolutionary Road gave me a panic attack. Awesome essay tho.

I’m currently in the same boat and I had to fast forward through some of the scenes because it’s was too raw, real, and painful. That’s how you know it’s an incredible movie because it makes you uncomfortable from the realness.

This breakdown of the manipulation is so spot on. I can't even count how many times I numbed my judgement or an intuition because of small acts of niceties, especially ones that hit things I desperately needed validation for.

I had brought this movie up saying how great I thought it was to a group of aspiring actors/ theater students, and they all shot me down saying the movie was cliche and that it was to by the book. Having been a child who witnessed my parents relationship devolve strikingly similar to this movie, I stand by my opinion that this movie is so so good and breaks my heart every time
Completely agree. My parents went through that and brought back so many memories.
Like most I came from a broken home, suicide attempts, emotional abuse, verbal abuse and sometimes physical.
I witnessed two grown adults destroy themselves, each other, their children and the family.
It changed my brain forever.
I watched this and felt that little child all over again.
Utterly terrifying.
This movie is a fabulous education tool, for how hurt people hurt people and create the same madness generations over, if self actuality is not present.
As for the telling end result of exposure to adverse childhood experiences, all children within my family have chosen no children of their own.
The cycle ends with us, end story.
It takes talent to analyze a film to such fine detail without it coming off as a disconnected surface-level perspective. You, sir, have earned yourself a subscriber.

Same! I can see Nora being fully controlled of the situation but doesn’t seem manipulative with the derogatory sense that goes with it. She is there to help Nicole, with much more experience in such situations.

The painting behind Nora is so interesting. It's of two people watching another visual art-piece and there is a 3rd chair that's empty. I wonder what it truly means but I think it's symbolic of how shrewd & manipulative lawyers like Nora show clients like Nicole an entirely different view of their own marriage modifying each & every detail & making the person feel like their marriage was a sham when really it just needed some work. What if Nicole and Charlie had continued their sessions with the marriage counselor, as shown in the beginning of the film? Maybe their marriage wouldn't reach the point of divorce if they had given it an honest and dedicated chance.
i think it means one person is missing, making them focusing on the loss..
the 2 could be either parent and a child/lawyer
At the beginning of the movie they werent with a marriage council, they were with a mediator that was helping them with their separation
And it wouldn’t have gotten their marriage better because Charlie never ever felt anything was wrong.

I watched it and subscribed right away, you have a brilliant mind for this space and you should be so proud of yourself for being able to take such a beautiful art form and being able to transform it into something that can be appreciated 10 fold by normal, non-film viewers around you. It concerns me that I didn't notice that Nora was intentionally manipulating Nicole, and I wonder how much my autism makes me vulnerable to being manipulated in every day life because I can't pick up on social cues that are apparently very obvious to NTs. Even re-watching this I was straining my brain to detect the dishonesty in Nora and I kept coming up with an internal error message because her behavior looked 'just like' someone I would assume to be sincere.
I felt the same way and I’m NT (as far as I know lol)… I loved the film and thought Nora was sincere. I never got a hint of manipulation in this scene. (After all, she’s her lawyer? What does she have to gain?)
That’s because Nora displays some strong covert narcissistic traits. She’s quite skilled at influencing and playing with people’s emotions for her own gain, but she’s also remarkably good at concealing these traits, even from neurotypicals (which I’m not, by the way; I’m also autistic).
So, yes, autistic people might find themselves more vulnerable to the influence of narcissistic individuals, especially when they have hyper-empathy. What really helped me protect myself and break free from these types of relationships was educating myself about narcissism. It was quite beneficial because being autistic makes me good at picking patterns. This allowed me to escape from unhealthy relationships and understand how true empathy looks like.

This whole scene has its own layers and definition I am someone too who loves to dissect scenes according to each character's approach so this video was really a great insight.

I actually don't really agree with that. Yeah, she's very aware of how things are going to go. But in the end, she never lied about anything to her client, she just did her job. She got the best result as well, otherwise, mother and son might not have been able to stay in L.A. together. I really liked the contrast between her and the other lawyer as well.

This was a great movie, but painful to watch. Everyone who was in this movie really killed their parts. The argument scene in the living room brought me to tears. That fight felt REAL! I just stumbled across this channel after I saw your take on Maestro. I felt that movie was pretentious and had that “Oscar bait” feel to it as well. *I’m not saying symmetry makes someone beautiful, the statement of her being defined is what I’ve read in the media about Scarlet.

I've been wanting to watch this film for a while but have been very nervous that it looks really heavy. Some of the clips I've seen remind me of experiences from my 1st marriage. How subtly and sometimes suddenly, things can turn from warm intimate love, into sadness, grief and even bitter hate at points. We are good friends now that we are divorced, I'm happy to say. This was a thoughtful and sincere essay. I love that you made that beautiful portrait and shared it with us. I may just take a deep breath and put this film on tonight.

This was an excellent analysis and you actually helped me see what I liked about this movie. I remember when I watched it I was left with an odd feeling. It was really bittersweet and contradictory. I realize now that I absolutely love the director's work and that what feels off to me at least are some of the performances. For some reason, and although she does a terrific job of exploring shades, levels, moods, tones, etc., I feel that SJ approaches some really dense traits of her character only on surface. There are times in which there is a mismatch between text/script and how it impacts her character. I see something similar in AD's performance. There is a cleanliness to this couple that is at times difficult to see the weigh of theater frustration and the desire of "making it" without compromising your beliefs about theater, acting and the arts. However, I can see how the director's choices still conveyed the message. I kinda wanna watch it again now, honestly. Thank you! Keep doing these reviews!

Divorces can get so messy, sometimes we choose the wrong people and end up paying so much for these choices, or sometimes we really do not have the skills to talk to each other, we cant see beyond our egos, I think we can depend too much on our partners for validation, today life has become so lonely, and women especially are missing out on genuine female friendships which can off set the burden of meeting all the needs by one individual...

all the video essays i see about this film talk about the fighting scene between charlie and nicole, but it was so intriguing and refreshing to see a breakdown of this scene instead. it made me view nora as more of an antagonist, which i had never really done before. phenomenal video, great job. Professionals like Nora have validated the emotions and supported many women through difficult life transitions. In this economy, everyone needs to make a living though.
Divorce lawyers equip themselves to deal with emotional people as well as logical ones (hence the tissues), therapists also need to “conveniently” keep tissues around as well, such is the nature of the job.
I loved Nora’s character in that she reminded me of the woman who shows up with the ability to ground another woman in the reality she is facing, this is hard to do when you’re wrapped up in the emotions.
I feel as though this take villainized her, where the villain of this film was the toxicity between Charlie and Nicole.
I get what you're saying, I would only add the toxicity is wonderfully personified by lawyers.
I agree that this is only one take on the scene. While the lawyer clearly was trying to land a client, any woman watching this can ALSO see that she has genuine sympathy, and has heard this story again and again.

This film is perfect in so many ways, starting with the cast. This film real shows how talented is Scarlett and Adam really are and how choosing the movies to be in is so important to show this.
