Nobody wins? That female main actor in the movie surely won (like most women after divorce), and Charlie certainly lost (Remember that part, in which the lawyer said he also had to pay for her lawyer?)
Jules A She isn't content herself, they BOTH lost. She loved him more & he cheated but he also tried to secure everything else for the family. They both had losses, that's the point. That divorce is not just about them, sadly, even though it should be, but rather what happens during it and the losses each have before, during and after. They were different types of losses, but they BOTH lost, different perspectives. If you think she won, you severely missed the point of Noah's movie.
@@Anonymous-ve7piI do not even think that she lost or that, that was the message of the movie: she had more custody, her husband paid part of her lawyer's fees, she got a new good job, she got a new partner, she lives with her family. She never lost anything, she left her husband because she was bored and wanted to take care of her needs without thinking about the person that has been taken care of her. "He cheated"? I don’t know if it was intentional, but I felt like Adam and Scarlett did great acting like children almost in this scene. Maybe it’s just the way they are dressed and made up, but they look like two kids being forced to chose a parent in a divorce. Really well done either way
I agree, but up to the extent that they seem like children. Mainly because they are being spoken for, and scolded by the lawyers when they speak out. In this scene both Charlie and Nora lost their voices. They are being spoken for, just like children often are.
Yeah I agree. I've wanted Joaquin to get an Oscar for years now but Joker wasn't his best performance (still really, really great, though). He deserved one way more for The Master or Walk the Line. Between him and Adam Driver, Adam probably had the better performance but they won't give it to him because it's more nuanced and because the Oscars like to give acting awards to award the actor's entire career, rather than just the whole performance. Adam will get his eventually, hopefully!!
You can uderstand how meticulously written and though-through this script is after Noah reveals a subplot with the judge and the tissues, which most likely will go unnoticed (as it went for me), yet still is put there to give each character its own life. Brilliant writing, directing and acting!
Imagine being cast for such a small role where you'll be saying your lines for 20 seconds or so, and the director tells you that your character is having a cold that particular day.

It's fascinating listening to a director. I don't know much about the process so to understand the care and attention to detail, the thought that goes into every scene - it's impressive.
I always got that feeling through the movie, especially the courtroom scene, where the situation went somewhere they didn’t want it to go. Like they see eachother and know that it’s gone too far now because they are hearing the lawyers really rip into the opposite side but they don’t know how to stop it. On one hand there’s moments where maybe they could handle the divorce without lawyers, but then either Charlie or Nicole will say something and then it escalates to an emotional statement and they won’t let it go.
this was my favorite scene of the movie, it was so heartbreaking and powerful, Ray and Laura truly are powerhouses it was chilling! and so sad, the lack of control of what was being said escalated so fast... it was amazing!
I wished he'd talked about the lenses he used. One of the most striking things about this scene to me was that when we cut to the judge, it becomes clear that the courtroom is really big, whereas while the scene was still focused on the debate, it seemed like they were on a very small room. It feels very claustrophobic and uncomfortable. I'm guessing he used really long lenses, which shorten distances.
I'm obsessed with this movie. I've lost count now, I think I'm at 7x watching it. It is honestly such an incredible film. It is rare that I notice and appreciate the structure of a film that is so often overlooked and fades into the background. Noah's direction was really put forward as a character itself. It was hard to miss some of these really symbolic gems (screenplay, wardrobe, camerawork). He's brilliant.
phantomvideowatcher gotta give cred to the crew too! great art direction by jade healy! she also PD’d Tiny Furniture which is pretty good if you can tolerate Lena Dunham
2:10 I really like when Jay's associate cough, it's very little but it make the film flows so naturally, not just lawyer vs lawyer but there's also people sorrounding them, they are human not a prop. I remember the court scene in To Kill a Mockingbird which is good but it lacks human existence, all the people in there doesn't feel alive.
The first film in a long time that really, REALLY immersed me into the story and had me emotionally invested in such a raw way. This movie felt like its happening to you in real life the first time you watch it.
I think I’m in love with this beautiful, brilliant and creative genius. Mainly because as a licensed marriage and family therapist...he nailed it. This may be a marriage counseling homework assignment, just a warning shot. Brilliant film! Heart wrenching.
Cinematic Experience - The very unique experience human being can only enjoy with camera, lens & screen. And I think Noah perfectly understands and performs it.
thank you for sharing - that courtroom scene was quite remarkable and entertaining. It's interesting that Mr Baumbach wants to convey that the Love is always there between the two people notwithstanding the divorce proceeding and proceedings. Divorce lawyers don't really want the couple to love each other but they're not questioning the absurdity of love and divorce like - why get divorced if you love each other. They need to get paid. That's all they're interested in.
What a delight. Watching the director explain all he did makes you savor even more this beautiful picture. Pick up things that were in your mind due to his great work and seeing many other things you recognized during the film. I hope there are many more of these videos to come.
thanks Noah Baumbach for a beautiful, sensitive, delicate, complex, nuanced movie. Such a rare gem nowadays. I am baffled that you did not get a nomination as best director...
Marriage Story was one of the best pictures I've seen in the past 2 years. Directing was on point and it really gave you the experience of being in the family with them. Adam Driver deserves the Oscar (That singing scene at the end of the movie was great) as does Scarlett (not for JoJo Rabbit though IMO). In 10-20 years, we'll look back at Adam as one of the best actors of our generation.
Totally agree with that reference to the rack focus in The Graduate. That whole scene was shot so beautifully. Noah Baumbach is so thoughtful and I love that he considers everything small and big. He’s one of many directors I hope to work with someday.
adam driver’s performance made everything more raw and personal. i don’t think this film would‘ve had the same emotional affect on me if adam wasn’t on it.
No kidding. I just LOATHED them. I reacted so strongly to them, taking this very painful situation and just grinding salt into the wounds. On the other hand, Charlie and Nicole should never have let it get so out of hand.
This might be an outlier take on this, but I like how Noah portrays the dissonance between an event as it happens and how it is told later on on. The scene where Nicole's tipsy was sweet and showed their closeness, but in here it becomes an ammo attacking her. As is the scene where Charlie gets his grant and Nicole is shown to be happy for him, but in here it becomes a point of contention. Just like how in broken relationships, what you think happens vs what it turns out to be are often the cause of disappointments. P.S. love how Noah drops all the film references, always love to see people so passionate about their work!
Noah is a genius. I'm an aspiring comedy drama writer and i am constantly inspired by him. Outside of perhaps Sideways think this is the greatest comedy drama of our time.
What about the ending? when you discover all those people in the room, and how public this whole thing was. That was brilliant! Using so little, this cut said so much about a marriage ending, the private bond between two people severed. I thought it was the best thing about this scene.

JAL3 Exactly
this was my favorite scene of the movie, it was so heartbreaking and powerful, Ray and Laura truly are powerhouses it was chilling! and so sad, the lack of control of what was being said escalated so fast... it was amazing!
His direction is beautiful poetry.
Yo, if he has a MasterClass, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. This is the best film of his oeuvre hands down
noah is such an intelligent and well-spoken artist, love this guy and his movies
Hold crap, I never noticed that the lawyer with Ray is Teddy from Brooklyn 99!
This movie is the perfect example of the quieter masterpiece that the Academy members are too lazy to watch. Love the explanation of the cut at 13:00
This just makes the movie even more interesting to me. I have to watch it again
Noah is a brilliant director and the actors here are absolutely amazing. Marriage Story is a great film
I love that he has the scrip with him to explain
Crying shame that Noah isn't up for Best Director.
One of the best original screenplay ever.
Laura Dern and Ray Liotta are such formidable foes
I think I’m in love with this beautiful, brilliant and creative genius. Mainly because as a licensed marriage and family therapist...he nailed it. This may be a marriage counseling homework assignment, just a warning shot. Brilliant film! Heart wrenching.
Adam Driver deserves the Oscar.
Laura Dern is so poised and brilliant in her roles and as herself.
What a delight. Watching the director explain all he did makes you savor even more this beautiful picture. Pick up things that were in your mind due to his great work and seeing many other things you recognized during the film. I hope there are many more of these videos to come.
If I was to be a writer-director, I’d like to take lessons from Noah Baumbach. He’s brilliant!
I wanna know more about this judge having a cold.
what a fantastic director. he truly invested himself into this film and paid so much attention to detail
thanks Noah Baumbach for a beautiful, sensitive, delicate, complex, nuanced movie.
Such a beautiful tragic film both Adam and Scarlett have amazing performances
Kainoa Presbitero and Adam is gonna lose to a clown :(
Funeral enthusiast the only time I wasn’t impressed with Joaquin.
Brilliant film. Always trying to incorporate these skills into my films
They are very good tbf
One of the best movies I watched this year for sure. Brilliant story, brilliant acting, brilliant directing!
i like the fact that so much thought is gone regarding how these scenes are shot
Finally. This is my favourite scene in the movie.
Why is he actually attractive tho... 😩
bananabob456 why not? Lol
bananabob456 cause your actually paying attention to him and listening lol
Spartacus 77 huh
He's vulnerable and intelligent
Give this man the Best Original Screenplay Oscar
Noah is such a genius- all of his movies feel so intimate and raw but hardly ever pretentious. Marriage Story is so beautiful
That's a handsome fellow.
Amazing breakdown. Thank you.
Marriage story was beautifully acted and directed.
13:15 oopsy he just found out the continuity issue, the tissue from the box in the first over shoulder is not there on the second lol
The best movie I have i seen this year, best acting, best writing, best directing and that following scene with the argument is exceptional
I LOVED when he mentioned Dr. Strangelove. All I could think about while watching Marriage Story was, “this is just like Dr. Strangelove.”
baumbach is a brilliant film maker
The Lawyers are the true villains in this movie if it ever to be considered to have one. Money leechers & dirty conspirators.
At the same time they are trying to be the 'heros' for those who hired them
It's why I didn't hire a lawyer when I filed for divorce. Thankfully I could still have a conversation with the ex and come to a compromise.
No kidding. I just LOATHED them. I reacted so strongly to them, taking this very painful situation and just grinding salt into the wounds. On the other hand, Charlie and Nicole should never have let it get so out of hand.
Noah Baumbach seems like such a thoughtful dude
this is such a beautiful movie
This movie was so beautifully simple and straightforward. I feel like this movie was a chapter out of most people's lives.
my favorite scene, the way it was shot was so smart, for me this was the standout of the film
His style of directing, seems so pleasant and simple that even I feel as if I could be the leading role 😏👏👏👏
BRAVO!!!
Noah is a genius. I'm an aspiring comedy drama writer and i am constantly inspired by him. Outside of perhaps Sideways think this is the greatest comedy drama of our time.
5 people gave this a 'thumbs down'... Denial is a powerful thing. (January 28, 2020)
I love Joaquin and I want him to get an Oscar but Adam definitely gave the better performance. Joaquin should have got one for The Master.
Can't believe that so much thought goes into shooting a scene in a movie!
I watched this last night. I must say it’s an absolute masterpiece. You can’t go wrong with Ray Liotta, Adam Driver, and Scarlett Johanssen!
What about the ending? when you discover all those people in the room, and how public this whole thing was. That was brilliant! Using so little, this cut said so much about a marriage ending, the private bond between two people severed. I thought it was the best thing about this scene.
I love the scene where Charlie is being observed. The entire sequence is so mesmerizing and the ending so unexpected.
same
This is one of the few films in cinematic history that should be watched alone to truly appreciate it
Going through child custody has to be the most stressful period in one's life.. mother / father / child & extended family
When technical meets emotional
Scarlett deserves the Oscar.
Amitt Sinha I’m really hoping that she wins
@@tonydimeo1882 me too
Agreed!
Would have loved a breakdown of the argument scene as well. Heavy stuff. By the way, Laura Dern knocked it out of the park!!
