  • 'Knives Out' director Rian Johnson takes us through the scene where Harlan Thrombey's dysfunctional family comes together before reading the crime novelist's will. Johnson explains all of the different quirks Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, and the rest of the cast brought to their performances and how this scene set the stage for the rest of the mystery to unfold.
    'Knives Out' is available now on Digital, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.

      @@westminsterabbey.6916 I'm talking about film/movies. As you said murder mysteries have never left tv but there has been a long drought when it comes to film. Especially the who done it format with large ensemble casts. I'm hoping we get something along the lines of everyone being trapped in the house when a murder happens like during a hurricane.

    • @segevstormlord3713
      @segevstormlord3713 3 года назад +106

      And "bad words" really are rarely needed to get the point across. They don't even make it "more realistic." The "realistic" movies full of swearing actually jar me because I don't hear that kind of language all the time IRL. I hear more of it IRL than you get in most PG-13 movies, but not the prolonged and repeated strings of it.
      Moreover, I doubt anybody notices their absence, except in some very key circumstances where the replacement words sound corny. Live Free or Die Hard had almost no F-bombs, while the older Die Hards were chock full of them. The only point where they would have been missed, though, is the iconic "Yippee-kai-yay" line, and that's where it was kept.
      On the other hand, a very well-placed swear word is all the more powerful when it's used sparingly. Data's use of it in Star Trek: Generations could not have been anything else and had the impact that line did, but that line would have had so much less impact if that kind of language were common to Star Trek.
      Heck, ironically, despite being "less bad" than the f-word, "eat excrement" is more visceral and disgusting, and makes their reactions all the more believable, than a simple throw-away curse like the f-bomb. You can almost feel Ransom wanting them to take his words literally, where with "f-you," there's no way he wants to do that in any literal sense. Which, again, I think, makes it more powerful.

    *spoiler alert* I'm always fascinated by how ambient lighting can really tell you a lot about a person's motivation in a movie. Most everyone is in a well-lit area of the room, and they are diametrically opposed (in position and in lighting) to Ransom whose face is half well-lit and half darkened, symbolizing how he has a two-faced persona; one that he presents to the family, the other hiding his own secrets until the very end while everyone else's are exposed throughout the movie. In this scene the family has basically encircled around him because they need someone to blame and vent their frustrations off of, and Ransom is just that scapegoat that they'll use, and their positioning in this scene really encapsulates that well. Blanc, Marta, and the police officer are positioned off in the back because they're neutrally observing (like the people in the picture frames) and Marta is innocent. None of them are here to place blame, just seeing all of this chaos unfold. And the props are very detailed and deliberate, war-time statues symbolic of how aggressive the family is and what their priorities are.

If Harlan were injected with 33x his regular dose of morphine he would know instantly, because he would be super high. He even referred to it as "the good stuff". Injecting drugs gets you high right away and he would know that he wasn't feeling the same way as when he got some morphine. Both Harlan and Marta (a nurse!) would know that he didn't get an overdose of morphine. This fact alone makes this movie terrible.

      @@felixmunoz3668 I think about this more and more. For my money, Johnson was handed a really difficult hand with the set-up. Luke's in a place which is hard to address in a way that's satisfying, Finn and Rey... I don't know if they had full arcs, and the overall shape of the FO-Republic conflict is really unclear. And Johnson played a blinder with that hand, simultaneously pushing the franchise into bold new territory and getting the best performances of the new trilogy.

    This is the best one of this y'all have ever done. It's legitimately fascinating to hear a director actually talk about the craft and logistics of filmmaking, and the decision making process that happens. More of this, please and thank you.

    It really goes to show, that when you actually have such a talent for directing, but are under the immense pressures of an ENORMOUS corporation, with a million moving parts you don't necessarily have much power over, those talents are kindof wasted. As a spectacle, TLJ was an amazing movie....but being written by Disney with the new Disney agenda, Johnson couldn't really shine. Now with Knives Out, he wrote and directed everything himself, so HIS passion for film-making can, and did, shine through. When a director is allowed to breathe and not be put under intense corporate guidelines, they can usually make AMAZING movies, just like knives out, and what Waititi did with Jojo Rabbit.

      Side note that Johnson did also write Last Jedi, but he notes in his commentary for Last Jedi that some scenes were influenced by how much Kennedy liked them (most of which were humor). Also shoehorning him in a middle of a trilogy was a huge disservice of his talent

      @@Tobytyty101 Agreed. My whole point was really that everyone who saw Last Jedi completely lambasted Johnson for "ruining the franchise" and saying he's a terrible director, when he basically did what Disney and Kennedy wanted. As i mentioned above, Waititi and Johnson are amazing directors, when given the chance to make films outside massive corporations, i.e Knives Out and Jojo. I doubt anyone would say Ragnarok is a better movie than Jojo, or Jedi to be better than Knives Out. Sure, Waititi put his particular brand in Ragnarok which made it better than most Marvel movies, but Jojo was a masterpiece. And Knives Out was infinitely better written, acted, and directed than Jedi.
