  • Free Western Classic: Bonanza - Episode 158 - No Less a Man - Certain that he is too old to stand against a notorious gang of bank robbers when news arrives that Virginia City will soon be next in a long string of successful raids, the terrified townsfolk demand Sheriff Coffee's resignation to make way for a younger lawman.
    No Less a Man
    Director: Don McDougall
    Writer: Jerry Adelman
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 15 March 1964 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
In anticipation of a raid by the deadly Wagner outlaw gang, the townsfolk of Virginia City want to replace their ageing sheriff Roy Coffee, whom they feel is not equal to the task of standing up to the Wagners. Adam Cartwright is among the few who insists that Coffee remain in office-but even he has second thoughts when the Sheriff appears to be suffering from a latent case of cowardice. Written by Jerry Adelman, this episode was a tour de force for veteran character actor Ray Teal, here given a rare opportunity to deliver a performance that transcends the standard two-dimensionality of Sheriff Roy Coffee. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"Ray Teal who was for so many years a semi-regular on Bonanza as sheriff Roy Coffee he was like a piece of furniture from the Ponderosa house gets center stage in this episode.
Some folks on the Virginia City Town Council think that Teal has seen his best days especially since he was wounded dealing with a drunk. Also the notorious Wagner gang is in the area robbing banks and spreading a lot of mayhem. Some citizens wonder if Teal can still cut it.
Pernell Roberts who is on the town council offers to help Teal out. For the only time in Bonanza's run, Sheriff Coffee opens up about himself. We learn he's a widower with no children and he looks on the citizens of Virginia City as kind of his children. The job is his life.
All I'll say is that in the end it's proved the man still has what it takes to get the job done.
Nice to see Ray Teal get center stage in an episode." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

It's sad that they don't make shows like this anymore. Such great story lines and lessons to be learned about honor, responsibility, wisdom and character. Grit and wisdom are things that only come through age and experience and are every bit as important as strength and speed. Sadly, the West doesn't value their elders as much as they should and we lose out on the benefit of their wisdom. Roy Coffee will always be the Sheriff of Virginia City as far as I am concerned!

Although I do live like old times in a way. We have a farm here in Tennessee, grow and can our own foods and raise our own meat. Have 3 son's (18,14,9) and very well behaved. I'm confident in knowing when the economy collapses, they will be able to live off the land. Also, have a blacksmith shop (mainly the boys and their dad), I crochet, make baskets, sew etc., Been doing pottery with my youngest (John) lately. Anyways.. I really love and enjoy living off the land.

This one reminds me of my family's streak of naming guinea pigs after Bonanza characters. We had Hop Sing, Little Joe, and Coffee. Coffee was a kind and patient cavy, Little Joe was precocious and always after the sows, and Hop Sing was by far the best guinea pig in the world. So, pretty aptly named for all three.

@Joe Owens. That's well said Joe! For the City Council, except Ben and Adam, to want to fire Sheriff Coffee because they thought that he was too old was completely unfair! Sheriff Coffee had so much experience dealing with criminals that he knew all of their tricks and he had his own tricks whereas a young rookie would not have. I liked Adam's cool head and Ben's logic. Pernell Roberts and Ray Teal were excellent. I LOVED SHERIFF COFFEE'S PLAN TO TRAP THE ROBBERS!! That was awesome!! 😄. That was a great ending.

Sure but it’s not like they don’t have some of that coming to them. Ok most cops aren’t abusive racist and violent. I bet that much is true. But it’s not about the cops who don’t commit those atrocities. And I guess it sorta is. When the cops who don’t commit atrocities stick their necks out for the ones who do and lean into the microphone to say they would’ve done the same thing. That’s a huge fucking problem. Even the decent ones seem to have this “us cops have to stick together” mentality that’s completely inappropriate in the defense of a cop who murdered someone cause they had some flimsy excuse and the dude was a different color than them. You have to pick your battles a lot better than that. And show cops are no more above the law then anyone else. A badge is not a license to kill a black man. Police departments nationwide need to reach out to the communities and let them know that they’re not taking the side of any police officer who does that shit. You can be “innocent till proven guilty” if you want. That’s fine. But you’re not going to sit there and pretend it didn’t happen. And you’re not going to jump up in their defense either. What about a message of support and empathy for the victims of police brutality and openly admitting it exists? Is that really asking so much? All we’re asking for is for them to have the common decency to own up to their own departmental failures and show that they’re committed to preventing those incidents from happening in the first place by getting their officers better trained to handle situations non violently and getting them involved in the community more as a positive presence. And for police officers across the board to treat every man regardless of the color of their skin with respect and as an equal

@@quentinstoeckel5959 No, Parley Baer didn't work with Matt Dillon. Dennis Weaver did. Then, Ken Curtis did. Then Buck Taylor did. I grew up in the 1960s and the 1970s. We watched "Gunsmoke" every Saturday night. I have the first season on dvds.

The fact of the matter is, the Virginia City (of Bonanza) was full of fair-weather neighbors who immediately turned on Roy, or the Cartwrights themselves, the first time there was a threat of some kind, or the Cartwrights were accused of something nefarious, etc, etc. lol

I loved it, I have probably seen this rerun most likely bc I have seen them over & over again. Lol, but I don't remember enjoying it this much. Didn't know Roy's, plan until the end, the banker must have trusted his faith in Roy, with his life he was quick. The council member about his young wife was hilarious, everyone was tired hearing it even me.

This movie was kinda a stretch and not very believed but it’s a good lesson in trusting in the wisdom of older people. I love the lessons that this series teaches us. Ben and Hoss are my favorite characters. I liked Little Joe until he got older and I realized in life what a frivolous man he turned out to be and certainly not a man who I could look up to.
