This film didn't do much for me, especially knowing how Ridley Scott comprised his original vision due to audience feedback.
I also didn't appreciate how Shaw was handled either, given the setup at the end of Prometheus.
However, I will never forget that scene of David and Walter with the "You blow and I'll do the fingering" line. The writers were WILDING. 😭😭😭

Great video! There’s a couple things I appreciate about Covenant. I like the setting and the neomorph design. I also liked the ending which I think is really terrifying. Katherine Waterston did an impeccable job showing complete horror on her face when she realizes who David is before he puts her to sleep. And like Prometheus, despite the film’s problems, the ending left room for the story to move forward (which I really do hope it does eventually, and I actually have a theory on how it could tie into Romulus).
Unfortunately everything else for me was mid to okay and there’s one thing I really didn’t like about it - the killing of Shaw. Why Ridley decided that it was best to kill her off screen between films is such a big mystery to me. It’s actually worse than Newt’s death in Alien 3 because at least we saw that death happen. Prometheus had such a lovely ending with the prospect of this lone survivor trying to find the meaning of life. And it just didn’t happen. I do like Michael Fassbender and he did a good job with his dual role, but dang I really wanted a different film than this when it comes down to it. All in all I like the film but there’s a lot about it that irked me.

There's a deleted scene that actually explains why Oram was so willing to stare directly into the egg. As they descend the staircase, there's a bowl on a small shelf on the wall and David tells him it's a balm that will help him overcome the smell. It's actually drugged which makes Oram more compliant to David's suggestion to "look closer."

I like Prometheus and Covenant for what they are. Can they touch the first two films, absolutely not. But they're solid enough entertainment for me as a longtime fan of the franchise's lore. That said, I witnessed first-hand these films becoming case-studies for why the 21st century issue of the internet giving everyone a voice convolutes everything...
1 - Ridley Scott gives a pre-Prometheus interview stating the film has "threads/strands of 'Alien' DNA in it."
2 - Post-Prometheus I witness many online bemoan the lack of xenomorphs...
3 - Covenant goes in production and while I have no evidence, it's pretty clear changes were made based on Prometheus reaction. I don't think they intended to show xenomorphs until the would-be third film...
    4. Covenant releases and I see many comments to the effect of "but I wanted to know more about the Engineers!"
Internet culture killed that trilogy early on, and they're already trying with Romulus if the comments on the final trailer are taken into account. A ridiculous amount of naysaying already despite it looking like the "true" sequel to the first two films many of us have long awaited...I'll be there ooening night regardless.

Entertaining enough but as part of the Alien franchise I rate it the second worst movie after Resurrection. More action than Prometheus although I thought the first half of the movie was stronger with the build up. Once again like Prometheus I found the performances hit and miss. Crudup was good, while Katherine Waterston's performance wasn't on the same level as Noomi Rapace's in the previous movie. The ending wasn't too surprising. The writing and ideas were starting to look a little too familiar. Distress signals, androids gone bad, hypersleep issues etc. Most of the entertainment came from the action scenes that were well staged and shot even though some of the actions by the characters were a little silly. Had enough of the David character by the end of this one. Didn't like it any better after a re-watch. Like Prometheus, a few good scenes. but it didn't hit the heights of the earlier movies. Would have preferred to have seen Scott direct the Blade Runner sequel but he handed over the reins for that one and the next Alien movie.

@@iansharp7422 hey! Totally fair outlook here. I think as someone who really didn’t care for this one much initially, it was nice to have enjoyed it more upon rewatch, BUT I don’t disagree with a lot of your takes. Katherine is definitely a lesser protagonist than Noomi, and a lot of poor choices are made by the characters. While I think I enjoyed David more than you, I totally agree that formula is definitely in place at this point, which is why I like Prometheus so much. It has some of those Alien formula elements, but also feels unique enough to have its own identity. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!

@@Khultan That last part I can agree with. It’s a shame that he allowed a loud audience minority to redirect his story, and eventually just stop the trilogy all together.
As for the risk of the original, I’m not saying it wasn’t a risky film to make at the time. It was inventive and impactful, but narratively simplistic in comparison to what he was going for with these prequels. He had far bigger narrative concepts with the prequels, even if they didn’t all come together.
