man ridley scott is such a likeable guy. every time i see him in an interview he's just so lovely and cultured and wise. I just want to take him out to the pub for a pint, mate.
Thanks OP for yet another deep-dive, on one of the best sci-fi movies of the 20th century. Honestly I never get tired of watching such movie posts! It seems like I always discover some more facts, new reveals, and behind-the-scenes details about the movies I love, in almost all of them. And maybe one of the greatest things that came from Alien was the introduction of a now legendary rising star, in the person of Sigourney Weaver.
And this is a perfect example of why I love older movies and absolutely despise newer ones. Where as much as possible everything is practical, it is so clear that there went so much time, passion and creativity into making those movies. With movies where literally ever is filmed before some green or bleu screen and then digitally added i just can’t see all of that. But luckily there are still directors that actually want more practical than digital, it is just sadly😊 way more rare nowadays.
I think you have some peculiar definition of 'effort' that nobody else shares or even knows what it is. This was by no means a hugely involved project as far as movies go, there are ones where a smaller crew have put in a lot more not only own time and money but taken risks for, like the original Blair Witch Proj. Some of the Evil Dead, Dario Argento early stuff - heck even later things to some degree, and myriad others. Well, maybe the Blair Witch is a bad example since it was stupidly cheap to make so to speak, but my point is this was a movie where people got paid to make it, they had sets, they had a budget etc. A lot of the way it came out as the final creation was not 'in the script', parts were storyboarded on the fly more or less or not even storyboarded and shot on a whim. Again, not sure what you mean by effort. There was planning but bits were skipped entirely and others modified or partially scrapped, so it is kinda a side effect that it has some disjointed feel, it changed mid shoot with film in the can already. But in man hours modern movies largely dwarf Alien, because of the distribution and release cost today being bigger for anything going to theatres, anything going straight to streaming is made on a budget that makes this look like a blockbuster.
Glad this channel has been picked up by the algo, subbed as soon as the ad started because I was so impressed with the authentic retro effects, this guy has great attention to detail

What an incredible documentary! Thank you so much, i knew nothing about Alien's production and those were delightful insights with great testimonies and image/video choices. Thank you, great work!
An excellent documentory. I am 65 and only 2 films have ever made me jump or shock. The dining room scene in Alien when John Hurt has a tummy upset and the blood testing scene in John Carpenters The Thing. I had no idea they were connected. And I love dark star ......
H.R. Giger is one of the most influential mass media artists of the last 50 years period. Just look at how Geidi-Prime looked in Dune Part II. GENIUS. There was a great almost home documentary on RUclips of him back in Switzerland 12 years ago or so back at his house studios museums of him etc
I think one of the bravest things of all was to cast a totally unknown Signourney Weaver in the leading role. With her tall, rangey looks and demeanor, she was perfect in the part.
I first saw Alien 3 years after it was made. The last week in my year 7 class the teachers thought they would put on alien (they were thinking it was more like Star Wars!!) right after the chest burst scene the teachers yanked the tape out of the VCR. It took me another 8 years to see the rest of that movie!! 🍿 and yes it’s an absolute classic!! You can see the genuine shock on the other actors faces as the Alien bursts out of John Hirt’s chest!!😮
Binging this series after watching Romulus this week … man it was so sick! Your creativity is crazy and the integrated ad read was class 🙏🏻👏🏻 You earned a new subscriber!
That was one hell of a Video! Thanks. I love Scott's early use of the smoke machine for ambient backgrounds and think it is so much cooler than people curren using those 'glimmer glass' 'black pro-mist' filters to soften up the look of their oversharpened footage from their 2024 hybrid cameras.
Alien will forever be one of my favorite movies, and Sigourney Weaver will forever hold a special place in my heart. Alien just fills in all the right boxes. Or maybe I just love a good horror with a female protagonist. Who knows?
This was very informative, thank you. There is a lot of documentation on the production of Aliens, but the first film's production is rarely discussed.
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it. We try and cover almost everything from start to finish with the narrative as well for these video essays. I like giving the full story when there is enough information
Very well done video. I’m really into the franchise right now given the release of the new film so the timing of this is just right. I’ve already done my fair share of diving into the production of the first 3 films - I still think there’s plenty of stuff that makes the video worth watching regardless. It’s just very well made. Congrats and hope you are doing well / having a good one
Hello, at 29:37 you phrased the bit about the "bridge's computer terminals being actually CGI" wrong, maybe even misunderstood it a bit yourself. No, the computer terminals are NOT CGI. They are practical, real movie props. What is CGI, are the images on the screen of these computer terminals. In the sense that it was real computer graphics from that era, i.e. computer-generated images. But none of it was CGI as we understand the term today. It was all created in-camera. No digital effects were added in post.
Ridley Scott's kids Jake and Luke appeared in the movie, playing smaller versions of the Nostromo crew when they explore the derelict spaceship. They're dressed in scaled down spacesuits, and Ridley used them to make the sets seem even bigger.
Having the alien bite Ripleys head off and sending a final message using her voice is just an astoundingly bad idea. There is nothing in the movie that suggests that the alien has that level of reflexive rationality, or even if it did, the knowledge of how to operate a human computer, let alone the ability to fake a human voice and understand an use human language to produce a coherent communication. WHy would it even understand communication or computers its only life experience is the ship and it was never in near a computer. It seems grossly implausible, inconsistent and goes against the whole fundamental idea of the creature and the rules of the universe of the movie. I cant fathom how scott would see this as an even remotely viable idea.
@@ChibabaDave Its not the logistics that make it a bad idea its the immediate implausibility. None of the things I mentioned except reflexive intelligence are heritable human qualities, and neither intelligence nor language nor computer proficiency nor an understanding of communication systems nor the details of the specific software, nor the knowledge that there is such a thing as an Earth to communicate with is developed in a human thats only a few days old if we had to entertain that idea at that level. But thats not the point. The point is that that it flies in the face of everything else the movie does and everything that makes Gigers creature work and there is no narrative poignancy to the idea it’s just a generic attempt at a monster movie sting in the tail kliche.
Whichever producer stopped Scott from having the alien bite Ripley's head off at the end deserves massive kudos. Good grief what a bad idea.
In the end he did it to kill Elizabeth Shaw off-camera
On an interesting note that really shows that the alien in the first movie was supposed to be an intelligent creature, not just a bug like in the rest of the series.

I saw this movie when it first came out at the drive-in, it was awesome, loved it.
Can't wait for your channel to blow up even more. The production value, the editing, everything. Amazing
Appreciate it!
I’ll never forget the first time I watch this with my dad it scared the hell out of me.Alien and the thing are my two best sci fi films.
Imagine if they put the same level of effort into making movies today.
" the Substance "
Glad this channel has been picked up by the algo, subbed as soon as the ad started because I was so impressed with the authentic retro effects, this guy has great attention to detail
They are real ctr TV's 😉
That was the most subtle plug I’ve ever seen! A+ on the editing
I know I’m here late, but that’s the best ever ad I’ve seen in a video. Bravo
haha appreciate it!
That mantis sleep ad was so good. I actually thought it was some weird product from the 70s or something😅 really love how you wove it into the video
Appreciate it! Sometimes you just get the perfect sponsor for the topic!
This video is excellent.
Appreciate it!
This was just fascinating! Thanks for putting this together!
weaver is a godess
Great video.
In the pipe, 5 by 5
Thanks for sharing 🎉
Yooo that was the slickest ad integration I've ever seen! Bravo 🏆
I am only two videos into this channel after discovering it tonight, and wow, such great information, transitions, editing, research, etc. Excellent job!
Appreciate it! And welcome to the channel!
I usually don’t fall for sponsor products but manta is a lifesaver for me. I purchased it first at kickstarter and followed by 2nd gen which I use to this day. The best thing I’ve ever bought. Total blackout and so comfortable.
You deserve a million+ subs, man. Love me some OG ALIEN, Quality stuff!
Never seen such a big (positive) deal made about an ad read, decided to keep an eye out specifically for it. Quick, concise, edited into the video seamlessly. Well done. Practically an art unto itself.
Haha appreciate it! I don't always have time to do that but this one just worked out so well
Take a shot everytime he say Nostromo wrong xD
I just woke up after a 2 week alcohol induced coma because of your comment
@@First_in_Last Oh damn… the dedication. xD
But if you really had a 2 week long coma, I’m so sorry
Well done. Very interesting video on one of my favorite films.
Great job on this video. I’m a huge fan of the series and can’t wait for the Aliens and Alien 3 entries.
You'll get to see them soon!
I was able to go to the 45th anniversary showing of alien and it was so god damn good
What an incredible documentary! Thank you so much, i knew nothing about Alien's production and those were delightful insights with great testimonies and image/video choices. Thank you, great work!
That as break was stealthy as hell well done. Whole video really was excellent.
haha appreciate it! Sometimes you just get the perfect combination of a video and a sponsor!
A word to lose: "Crazy."
I'm a long-time fan of the film, butI did learn new info by watching this.
Best advertising ever seen in my entire life for RUclips
Probably my favourite movie ever and I think it was by far Weaver's best role
What an amazing film this was and still is today.
An excellent documentory. I am 65 and only 2 films have ever made me jump or shock. The dining room scene in Alien when John Hurt has a tummy upset and the blood testing scene in John Carpenters The Thing. I had no idea they were connected. And I love dark star ......
Weaver is still drop dead gorgeous even today. She’s the sexiest final girl ever. Nobody comes close.
The film would not be the same without her, thank god she got the role and not Streep
Agreed. Don’t have any crushes, love my wife to death; but damn sigourney is awesome.
I never thought that she was that amazing looking. But being badass and smart is attractive.
She's all that.
H.R. Giger is one of the most influential mass media artists of the last 50 years period. Just look at how Geidi-Prime looked in Dune Part II. GENIUS. There was a great almost home documentary on RUclips of him back in Switzerland 12 years ago or so back at his house studios museums of him etc
The alien ripping through the chest was beyond shocking. Sigourney Weaver was phenomenal!!!!
That Manta sleep ad was so good
You've made an amazing video, man, like the screen transitions are on point, like fr good video, man. You've found a new subscriber.
Appreciate it! Welcome to the channel!
Man the offspring in Romulus freaked me out when it’s first unveiled
Your creativity is crazy and the integrated ad read was class 🙏🏻👏🏻
You earned a new subscriber!
Appreciate it! Wish I could make all the integrated ads like that! Some just are too perfect
Appreciate it! More to follow for the next 6 days. It has been interesting going back and seeing how all of these were made.
Well done on the sleep mask ad. I didn't even realize it was an ad until the end 👏👏👏
Alien will forever be one of my favorite movies, and Sigourney Weaver will forever hold a special place in my heart. Alien just fills in all the right boxes. Or maybe I just love a good horror with a female protagonist. Who knows?
Saw this when it first came out on video, 1980 I think. It's still easily the best of the Alien series.
This was very informative, thank you. There is a lot of documentation on the production of Aliens, but the first film's production is rarely discussed.
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it. We try and cover almost everything from start to finish with the narrative as well for these video essays. I like giving the full story when there is enough information
Sigourneeey , Queen of every outer space movie
Awesome well presented video. For me Alien is a stand-alone movie unsurpassed!
Appreciate it!
A L I E N imo the best in the series because of the design & original twists and all brilliant A list actors. 👌
i always loved how belivable the set looked, it was quite authentic in terms of functionality
Ridley is a genius , of course.
Great ad!
Prog Rock fans of Emerson, Lake and Palmer will immediately recognize H.R. Giger’s artwork on ELP’s 1973 album cover for Brain Salad Surgery.
You could not dispute this man’s mind would be terrifying to live with. Thankfully we have Art.
Dude the way you edit these videos rule so much. Even the sponsor bit was well done. I really appreciate all that stuff
This really nails it. I know because I was there. Thanks for your series.
What a genuinely interesting and creative ad read, I enjoyed that
Best sponsor break ever 👏🏽
😅 appreciate it! Sometimes you just get the right sponsor and video to go together. This one was fun
Hey man. That sponsorship transition was the smoothest I've ever seen on RUclips. It should be illegal, it was that good.
This is a superb deep dive into the one of my favourite horror films! ❤
Appreciate it!
Yeah, that's not what I meant to say. I meant to say that the images on the screen were computer generated. My bad!
Ridley Scott's kids Jake and Luke appeared in the movie, playing smaller versions of the Nostromo crew when they explore the derelict spaceship. They're dressed in scaled down spacesuits, and Ridley used them to make the sets seem even bigger.
That was the best embedded ad I have ever seen. Great video.
Sometimes the perfect video meets the perfect ad integration! Wish I could get them all like this
Dark Star is a deep cut favourite for me. 🏄♂️
Thank you for telling people about The Dune that never was being the inspiration for yet another great art.
This is fantastic!
Well i suppose it could be argued it was born from a human?
@@ChibabaDave That creature was born from a human in the same way that tapeworms are born from humans.
This was so ducking well made dude. Be proud
Fascinating
Holy shit the production value of this YT video
😅 Appreciate it!
Great documentary. This is a great film that still holds up today.
