My god, mate, the dust! Clean your lenses!
Adds character on these vintage lenses
I'm off to buy an industrial size lens cloth and some cleaning fluid
haha that's one way of looking at it!
Photogearnews Is that your version of an ND filter...?😉
Whack the aperture to f/2.8, shoot at a slight angle to the sun and witness some beautiful flare and circular... err... halos
And all those old lenses are now stabilized with IBIS, pretty cool
Completely forgot to mention that it in the video! Going to be fun to dig out some from my collection and try them out
so, did the 2nd part of thiis video ever come out? Cant seem to find it....
so, does it ever worked ? does the camera has TTL or whatever feature the Z has with legancy lenses ?
so how easy it is to focus manual lenses with the Z7? does the viewfinder give you any indicators. or is it strictly by how good your eyes can focus/see.?
It should work like the Sony A7 camera series. You have focus peaking which superimposes a colored area over high contrast points. You have EVF magnification which allows you to fine focus the image.
You will also have 5 stops of image stabilization which will allow the use of shutter speed down to 1/2 second with a 50mm lens.
Does the adapter have a motor drive for the AF??
Cool video, the first I've seen adapting a non AF-S lens... and a pre-Ai one at that. Is it an Ai'd lens?
Does the FTZ adapter and the Z-cameras have the capability to write the f-stop selected to the pictures taken when using Ai/Ai-S lenses like the D850, D500, D7200, etc.?
No.
I use it with all my sony cameras - works very well with both R2 and a6500 along with 3 axis stabilization. Manual adapters are very cheap for the sont and other mirrorless systems. It will take awhile for these adapters to be developed for the nikon system.
Why you got so many dust on (or in?) your 50mm f/1.4??
It's sat on a shelf for a few weeks.... And stupidly I forgot to put the lens cap on. I'm off to Amazon to buy a new lens cap
I used to use a UV filter but took it off last week, been together with my Nikon F since last year...
Beautiful! Mine usually gets used with my A7R
I have been using old manual Nikon lenses in my Sony FF Cameras for a long time. Welcome to the club. Oh and every other brands 35mm lenses for that matter.
Exactly like I said in the video... As I'm sure you heard.
I've been using all sorts of old manual focus lenses in all sorts of mirrorless mounts, buts its nice to finally use my vintage Nikkor in a full frame Nikon mirrorless
Photogearnews that’s why I said “welcome to the club” being it’s a Nikon.
Gotcha 👍
I guess for Nikon users that pick this camera up will finally get the experience is Sony user have said for years, how great old vintage glass can be. I’m sure we will see a full line of third party dumb adapter for old mounts.
Chris Barr what would be the best converter to use older Nikon lenses like this non AI lens on Sony mirrorless cameras?
How do you feel about the one card slot. Everyone criticize Sony on not being a Pro level camera without it. Does that mean the new Nikons are not Pro level?
neither of these is pro, its equivalent to A7RII(single slot, didnt last a long time before Dual Slot came out).
Tough one... Plenty of pros have used Sony’s for last 5 years and been fine without the dual cards, but there is a reason Sony eventually added them. I wouldn't want to shoot a wedding or something like that without dual slots. I guess it depends what type of ’pro’ photography you do.
They are putting a lot of faith in to XQD.
I think we’ll see the dual slots in a future model that will be higher in the range aimed at sports photographers - something akin to the A9.
As with all these things, they’ll listen to feedback and evolve with every generation. It's a pretty solid start and from what I saw it would seem to match the A7R III and A7 III in terms of everything but the dual card slots
Photogearnews I think it was a smart decision to Not try any kind of EyeAF that was half-a**.
Plus reports of only 300+ shots on one battery. Sony used to get major criticized for this. I noticed there is none so far this morning about it. What's your thoughts on that? Im a Sony shooter for years so I understand the pain it was to switch out batteries all day. Will Nikon users get used to lower battery life compared to their DSLRs something they praised about for so long.
Well Nikon said that a few of their photographers has reported 600 shots on a battery... So lets see. I've an A7 III and A7R (original) so can do some kind of direct comparisons of battery life.
Nikom did also.mention a dual battery pack that would be available - but no other details as go whether this would be a vertical grip or just a screw pack on the bottom. That would help, but like you say, Sony were criticised before the intro of the new battery.
Personally swapping out never bothered me much for photography... A couple of batteries, maybe 3 at most per day with the old NPFW50 batteries and they are cheap and you can always charge via USB in your bag when not in use.
For video it's a bit more a pain.
I’ll make sure I cover battery life in depth in the full review... It looks like it going to be 30+ mins at this rate!
Nikon fanboys being careful not to accidentally bash their first ever mirrorless...lol
How is the focus peaking?
yes--very interested in this as well!
43 mega pixles of dust ! cant wait to see those images !
*45.7 mega pixels of dust
Same lens works fine on Df
Sure does... I’ve used on that as well.
With the wider lens throat diameter and shallower flange focal distance, the ability to use more old lenses are higher on Z-Mount compared to E-mount.
Loving using my 50mm 1.8 Ai with the Z7! it's like a pancake lens and so sharp!
What a great idea - rushing to the Nikon Z6/7 launching in NYC to try it with a historical lens.
When photography is such a passion. Don't we just love that!?
*London... only a few miles up the road, but yes... very excited. It’s not a big deal, it’s just a lens on a camera to some, but for me it’s a chance to try something new and exciting
@@Photogearnews Hence, the passion. I like that!
And where can we se if It really works?? 🤔 What Kind of vídeo os this??
Whats the peaking like. I can't wait for an in-depth review - the only thing worrying me is the reports it hunts in low light - but Dpreview says it does this thing of stopping down - if so Id open them up for AF.
Is that a non-AI lens? If so is it converted? The manual clearly states that the FTZ cannot accept a non-AI.
bump?
It’s pre-Ai that’s been converted
i have that same lens. i will try that. get a micro fiber cloth to wipe that lens peace to you. i should try this with my d850
this is really good news for sure., but my OCD is killing me with that dust :-) Is it weird that i didnt see the Z only the dusty lens..lol
The dust has more comments than the camera... At least it's good for RUclips Engagement 😂
The dust and crap actually adds character to old lenses. They're never going to be as sharp or as contrasty as newer lenses, but they do have their own signature.
U can do this since 4 years with an A7 so whats the buzz about?
If you watched the video then you would hear me say that it was great to finally be able to do it on a Nikon camera.
I don't know, I've been using this lens on my fuji with an adapter, and the sharpness is not that great. When I shot with my F2 you can tell a difference, but I don't know why on todays dslr I don't think is a very good lens. I have also tried it on nikon bodies.... and the result is not that great.
Will the AF work with AFD lenses ?
semangatmembara no
You can use that lens on a Sony with AF if you like...
Can use it on lots of cameras and do lots of things. As I said, it is nice to finally be able to use it on a Nikon mirrorless camera with a full frame sensor... It gets plenty of use on my A7R already
It's a manual focus lens. In fact it predates the invention of autofocus. I'd like to know how you expect it to autofocus with no motor.
Techart make an AF adapter. It uses a helicoid to turn back and forth to bring the manual lens in to focus
Tompie913 dip shit.
Very cool!
Interesting. I hate when you test out the cameras at the camera show, and they tell you that you can't take the images because the camera is a production model. WTF. Get the damn cameras ready so people can take the photos and check them out.
FTZ Mount adapter WITH A MANUAL LENS.
GOOD JOB.
Yep... tried it in the main video with a 24-70mm
Imagine Nikon made an adapter with the coupling prong for pre ai lenses :o
They shouldn't need the coupling pin for the prong because it's a mirrorless camera and can meter at working aperture...but I agree it would be funny if they included it anyway...
It's not zed dude its zee...
Biggest mistake in camera history... 1 card slot.. Nikon had a huge chance to land a bomb, not to mention learn from Sony’s mistakes. Nikon will have to say goodbye to most of the Pro market.. what a cock up!
So you mount your lens and say nothing.. Fail
Difficult to say anything when we weren’t allowed to shoot any images or show any video based on the fact that both the camera and adapter were pre-production.
Thanks for the feedback
I feel bad now. Not realizing Nikon was crippling your ability to share images with Nikon F mount glass.. Sorry about that.. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming review . Honestly, it seems like this is the one thing this camera has going for it with the adaptor. That and the ergonomics. Subscribed and looking forward to your next video. I really wish Nikon would pull out all the stops and embrace the mirrorless and put everything they have in there next body.. If so I would glad step up and sell my Sony A7r11 to go along with My Nikon D4 and Nikon Film bodies. As it is.. From all Iv heard and seen. I cant see a good reason to switch over ...yet.. scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/42470489_149578915982125_5194352178134777856_o.jpg?_nc_cat=108&oh=eddcb262259c9c79fd03d992c68b469e&oe=5C265B31 Nikkor 800 5.6 IF-ED AIS on Sony A7r11
Yeah, put a 60 years old glasses on a 3000€ 45 mega pixel pixel camera...
I've put it on a 36 million pixel camera and its great. Super sharp at f/8 and soft at f/1.4 with nice flare and low contrast - which I like for some portraits and video.
It's not because it's old that it's necessarily worse. There is some very sharp old glass out there. A lot of folks like the Helios 44-2. It's less sharp than current lenses but provides a distinct look to your images. It all depends on personal preference. I've used both the Helios and Nikon 50mm 1.8 pancake on my Sony's.
DOP I work with often shoots on old glass to take away the slightly clinical look of modern things like zeiss superspeeds. If you like it, use it. Plus it'll have a manual aperture ring and hard stops...
There are some stunning lenses from the film era and they perform very well with a high resolution camera. Some have beautiful bokeh - have 15 blade aperture - I use them on the sony R2 all the time and often I prefer the rendering to some of the modern lenses.
this is D-bag video
Here is a question for you: the 50mm you have was designed for film/12MP sensor. What purpose would it serve on a 45MP sensor? What happened to the idea of resolving power? This is like driving a Ferrari with worn out cheap tires....
Also, Nikon has made it clear that it's called the "Zee 6 7" not "Zed 6 7". Please show some respect to Nikon by calling it the way it was meant to be...
Having tested the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 side by side photographing a lens chart against every 50mm f/1.8 AF lens on a D800, this lens can hold its own at f/8 against the best of them.
Added to that lenses aren’t just about sharpness but also colour and contrast, notably micro-contrast which many think can be too strong of modern lenses - filmmakers especially. Not sure if you’ve heard but the Z6 has some pretty amazing specs.
Also Nikon has made it clear that it is ‘Zee’ in countries where they say ‘Zee’ and ‘Zed’ where it is more common
Hopefully that will answer your questions. Have a great day!
Where's that lens from is just a piece of dust!
