My one and only Dead show, which I look back on as a religious experience. Truly grateful to have stumbled upon this high quality video after 30 years. 4 of us drove 3 hours from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to attend. Only a few short weeks later, we loaded up on the USS Iwo Jima LPH-2 to go to Desert Shield/Desert Storm. What a period in my young life at that time. Very blessed to see Jerry and the gang. Now I’m almost as old as Jerry when he passed way too soon. Life flys by. Seems like yesterday. Grateful is such a wonderful and profound word. God bless you all.

I met an army Ranger at this show who had been in Panama and was pretty traumatized by what he saw and did there. We had a long heart to heart after the show and wound up corresponding for a couple of years after that. He did his hitch and got out right after Desert Storm, he was glad to be moving on. I've lost touch with him but hopefully he's still out there and at peace with himself.

My first show - of many - but wow this was something special. The girl I was with - Anneka Foushee - has since sadly died from cancer - but we had a beautiful time at the show - even after realizing our ride had left us after the show was over - got a ride home with a random dental hygienist who was super nice - all the while Anneka's fingernails are dug into my arm cause - of course - we were trippin balls. Ha. Good, fun, beautiful times - glad you got to be there too Larry - we even got down on the grassy area before the cops rolled in and blocked it off!

I then turned back on I-40 and headed east all the way to North Carolina. Saw the show, went back to Memphis to pick up my friend and then headed back to FL. This was the best concert I ever went too, not only because the Dead gave the best performance, but because all my friends were all there and I was bumping into them everywhere the whole show. I had a field ticket and was trying to get down when Jack Straw was playing. It was so congested with people and security wasn't letting us jumped down, a bunch of us jumped down the second Loser came on, which the security in the back didn't like. Later on almost the entire hill charged down the hill overwhelmingly security, which we heard was the reason for the power out. Maybe it was the drugs, but I swore at the time that the Dead took control of the storm, but I now think they were just feeding off the storms energy.

@@jhobopopo2yo209 that was an icline behind the end zone on the side of the field opposite the stage. It was roped off to keep people out. During the 3rd song of the show a big ass thunderstorm hit and it was raining like crazy, so it got really muddy really fast. There appeared to be no footing because when people tried to enter that area, down they went. It looked like some people might have been injured, can't say for sure, after all it was 30 years ago. Anyway, that's why the audience was so loud during Masterpiece. Nobody was watching the band at that moment; everybody was watching the show on the hill! 😂 You can't blame folks for wanting to be in that area, because it looked like a great vantage point to watch the show, and that rope sure as hell wasn't gonna keep anyone out. Apparently security just said "screw it" and people were allowed to stay there. All part of what made this a memorable night.

So true. Just the fact that every live show was tons of improvisation. They would leave open areas for Al the solos and communicate during the song when to go back to chorus, etc. plus, Jerry was the best guitarist of our generation. He literally solos like most the time. And improve solo are the Uber max! As you said, never again will we have the honor the experience the Grateful Dead. Absolutely unique. It started from the acid tests way back in late 50s. They played all night with no prepared set list. Then Augustus Ozley Stanley kind of adopted them. A unique set of experiences. All through the 60s and 70s if you around the band and drank anything they have you, you were dosed with the top notch Lysergic Acid Ozley Stanley style!!!

Thank you for sharing this! Wow, what an experience being there and now those memories flood back like it was yesterday! The first show for me, I was so elevated in the moment. The 100 degree heat, too much tequila before The Dead hit the stage, had a heat stroke. My girlfriend that was with us got to the first aid station where they cooled me down, and I good to go. Add the Thunderstorm, power outage, guys came back and keep jamming. Watching gate crashes and hill sliders and wondering WTF are these State Troopers going to do! It was like a religious experience for me. Wore out my concert t-shirt over the years, where the blue fade to white, bears barely recognizable, see through with holes. Passed the music down to my son's and we jammed over the years down on our river with our friends.

Do you wonder if many people realize how much Hornsby played a vital role in keeping this band together after 7/25/90 ? I mean....I respect what came after but he honestly was never really a solid member and maybe also lead to his suicide...rip Vince...but Hornsby...he was a huge role during those years and well the peak of the music was no more after Brent they did keep touring and had some good moments for the last 4 years and I believe Hornsby is owed some mass props

The front row was home for me. I’m in the fence at Englishtown show right alongside of Michael Becker my college buddy who introduced me to the R & R lifestyle traveling up and down the East Coast. And we had 16 seats in the first two rows for The Wall at the last night of 5 at Nassau. Caught 2 of the 3 year drop guitar pics thrown by PF to me when the Wall came down. Saw them not too long after this. After Brent passed, unfortunately.
Bruce took over for a while and that's when I saw them.
Then 4 more and two jgb shows. Then Jerry passed.
So grateful to have seen him live. What a wonderful experience everytime!
    What a long strange trip it's been!!!!☮️♥️☯️

summer 86 thru summer 90 were prime years for the dead. jerry was priimed and confident. when brent passed in july 90 something was missing.

    • @mkwilson38
      @mkwilson38 4 года назад +5

Timothy Rogers , you mean ‘87 thru summer ‘90. Jerry had his health scare in 86, where leading up to it was probably hard for him. 87 is when they turn on with anew. Each year was somehow arguably better than the last through these years.

Yeah summer 86 was a bummer no band and no weed on east coast

yes, that sounds right. I just remember that I first saw the dead in 78 and stopped in 82. life got in the way and I felt jerry was having issues with drugs and not enjoying life. when they revived in 87 I saw them at the garden many times thru 90. they blew the roof off that sucker Everytime. jerry had the audience in the palm of his hand. 🔥❤️

I think Jerry and the band continued and sometimes played better through 91..after that it really became hit it miss. Then it became more misses than hits...made me sad and I really wish they had taken time off to regroup get healthy.

I didn't go see The Grateful Dead so many times just because I love them
    But because I needed it.
I needed to feel the vibe the deepness
    The love
Ringing in mY ears. My body needed this sound so much like a drug.

I flew out from San Diego, CA for R.F.K. '90 & hit jackpot on my 3rd and last Brent show. I was sixteen. Made "Fear and Loathing on the Summer Tour 1990" shirts in my high school graphic arts class w/Steadman illustration of Gonzo used my "business opportunity" as an excuse to go the show cuz my uptight pops didn't want me seeing Jerry and getting on the bus. That's why I arrived with 200 t-shirts, LMAO!!! Talk about a storm. BEST Dark Star outta sickest Foolish ❤️. I was on 1 hit of primo freshly dipped divine. So thrilling. Losing Brent was life shattering for me as well. Imagine what New Speedway would of sounded like with BRENT MYDLAND?!!!! If you really wanna hear Phil's thunderous run, SPRING 90 playing, my 💰 is on 5-5-90 (& 5-6 btw), 6-9-90 (Expo's Stranger!, Loser, etc), well...all 3 Expo's, 6-8's second set!!!!!!! 3 Shorelines & the 2 Eugene shows. My favorite GD sound has ALWAYS been '89 - Summer '90. Brendan Byrne '88!

feasibly the "dryest" summer ever. feds were absolutely out of control. I scored a sweet QP about a week before tour. next day my buddy who hooked me got stung at a cheap hotel. he went to jail and i ran away with the band. i shared with everyone in need at the shows in memory of my fallen brother
