Brent went balls to the wall from the first note. I think it set the tone for the show. I miss Brent almost as much as Jerry.Long live the Dead
who is samantha
Yeah, Brent was an integral part of The Dead, when he was with 'em. I'm fortunate to have caught several shows with him. They were among my best shows too, 1980, 82 and 83! 😎
Yep...I caught Brent in at least 6 shows..ALWAYS high energy...and that special psychic connection w Jerry was UNMISTAKABLE !! ~JCP~
check out 10 30 80
I KNOW!!! Brent is LEGEND !! JEEEZ... so so so goood !!
this is too friggin awesome. Candyman wow! B-E-A-utiful. can't get enough.. who's with me?!
I am, man.
Probably the best version of it I’ve ever heard. Stunner
Yes, but the video producer can't find Jerry during the peak moment of the song! Rrrgggg
Yeee haaa! Getum ole' grateful...
he was deeeep into that song..wow
The Grateful Dead are probably the most important thing that's happened to me in my life. Knowing them has changed the trajectory of my entire existence, and I am so happy to say in my 50s, I'm still able to see them play. John Mayer is a blessing sent from Jerry. We are so lucky to have been born during this time and able to experience them, the most magical band in the world. ❤⚡
I don't know if anyone has ever thanked you Voodoonola, but I really want to say thank you for doing whatever it is you did to get all these great moments posted. Thank you!
+Richard Del Galdo (JO) 100% agree Thanxx (~);}
Richard Del Galdo (JO) yes yes Thank you for the great videos. Was at this run loved shoreline. Thanks for bringing it back to me.
+1
Always thank Voodoonola
Sayin thank you!!!! For a real good time
Brent was such a magical musician. I wish he knew how much he was loved. ❤
Only a GOD in the heavens can give an earthly being like myself a blessing to know the GD! Iam full of joy my timeline has given me the pleasure of knowing this BAND
and/or the shredding. gratitude. :)
God bless the Dead and all of us who have been there, at one time or another- 52 shows myself, well, the song is not over for me...2/1/15 and everyday is part of the same song that will not ever end! I met Jerry once, and asked him about what he will take from all this, in retrospect, and he said "I haven't the foggiest idea sofar, because each time I play, its as if I have never done anything like this before- but really, I would only be glad to have done it, besides, why was I doing it anyways?" Well, we shook hands and he said "By the way, thank you the question". I could only smile and take pictures, which are among my most valued possessions to this day.
Brian Sternett That is a badass anecdote man. I really like hearing about Jerry through these sorts of personal recollections. The fact that he said "By the way, thank you for the question." is to me amazing, a sort of confirmation in words of the vibes we get through his music. I bet those pics you got are great. Definitely sounds like an experience to treasure. Thanks for sharing!
Brian Sternett That must have been an amazing experience. I love how Jerry appreciated the question. He was so endlessly curious.
Thanks for sharing. and man, isn't this '87 show great?
Brian Sternett
Beautifal Jerry story. Where did you see Jerry and are you wiling to share any pics??Would make my day, but either way, blessings on you. That sounds like an awesome moment, and the question was well thought out or did it just come to you??tomeaton2003@yahoo.comThanks for sharing, 74 shows an\d counting
Cool story. I met a guy at a show who was backstage one time. He told me about this other guy that walked up to Jerry after a show & said, "Jerry, that was awesome! Give me a hug, bro!" Jerry's response was, "Get the fuck away from me." lmfao
Been a Deadhead since way back when, it was Neil and Jim's fault. Going to turn 70 in a couple of days. Thanks for this re-visit, really great production. I'll talk to Neil in a day or so and I think of Jimmy every week. God it's great to have old friends (some gone now but always remembered) and to have this music to listen too. Thanks again for posting.
SMOKIN' SHOW..... I started it expecting to listen to a song or 2 and wound up listening to the whole thing, Magic on this night!
Randy Skolnick it's 430 in the morning! Too good to turn off!
I know exactly how that is.
You are the best if you kept listening you understand their songs are all about life in general
I started on West LA. FORGET ABOUT IT. FREAKING BANG✨️🙏😎
Very good show from one of the (many) peak stretches in Dead history. What made '87 such a great year was, first and foremost of course, Garcia being healthy and relatively sober. The tidal wave of energy following the release of "In the Dark" and the success of that record. The enormous amount of material they now had being around for 20+ years and having the same line up for the past 8+ years. '87 has always been one of my favorite periods in the bands illustrious history.
I couldn’t agree more!
It was a great comeback. They were incapable of a night like this in some previous years. Great energy
THANK YOU JESUS FOR ANOTHER DAY AND YEAR
This show is pure 🔥🔥 from the first note... GD '87 - '89 was magical... Rest In Paradise Jerry & Brent 🎶🎶🎸🎹
Magical if you hadn't gotten to ride the bus prior to 87.
Yea it pretty freaking hot. Jerry on fire in a BIG WAY.
Maggie's Farm is off the hook. Jesus this good.
I feel so fortunate to have been on those tours. I really don't think any other band will come along that can move me like the Dead did 87-89.
Agree
Oh wow, suddenly realized this was back when i was living in Mill Valley, the day of this show, in the organic foods store, standing next to me is Bob Weir, getting avocodos or such. Politely I let him shop in peace. But then when he turned up again, behind me in the checkout line, had to smile and ask "So, are you guys going to rock tonight?"
"Yup" he drawled.
Viola this show above.
I noticed out front that he was driving the same SAAB model as my dad, which I though an excellent choice.
Lol Bobby talked about that car in an interview about his cars. Still has his patina Stingray. Said his BMW 2002 was his favorite. Lol. Love Bob Glob
Some of the greatest times of my life with my best friends, who are all gone now, were spent at shows like this, there was truly nothing like a Grateful Dead concert..
Me, too...I would re-do all of the 80's in a heartbeat...
THANK YOU JESUS FOR ANOTHER DAY
Ahh, Jerry, and Brent. What more can one say!!!
Jerry and the whole Crew made it work PERFECTLY Though
How about Bobby, Bill, Phil and Mickey?
Yah they did Heroine and died
You really get a a good look at Brent!! Front seat people, courtside
For those of you who don’t get the pure JOY of a Jerry Garcia guitar solo. Don’t give up, take a deep breath and keep listening.
lol
'87 was the first year I saw the Dead. I was 16, took acid for the first time on the floor at the show in the Brendan Byrne Arena in NJ. God I was a lucky young man! My mind continues to be in awe of the cosmos as the adventure of being alive continues to unfold. That show in '87 changed my life!
I had a similar experience and I truly believe it set the tone for the rest of my life. This was a really wonderful time to see the boys and what marvelous memories provided by this uploader
That’s cool bro!!I feel it too. So lucky! Have a magical life....
Brendan Byrne, '89 Bobby's birthday, Jerry playing Wolf, crazy DarkStar. Oh what anight!
Im so blessed I was born in an age where I was able to experience the energy flow between human beings like none other in one place all with one focus!!!! Words can't put it in words!
I saw most of my shows in 87 , probably 20 or so in that year and this is F*ing kickin'
Brent was amazing , look how much fun these guys are having !
I saw 22 shows in 87...the most of all the years (1980-95) and 114 shows. 88 was a close second. I’ll always look at 87-88 as damn special years. Blessed was I.
And drive home after the show.
@@lpndeadhead1961 yea .. MSG was my home base , easy to get to by MassTransit :)
What a fierce Hey Pocky! Love it.
Mike Vendel yeah they came out the gate ripping
brejts a beast
So far the BEST, My Brother Esau. Come on it’s so incredible!
What a story. Always loved it, a rare gem by the time I came around. Grateful for the 89-90 tours
My first dead show. I was a junior in highschool. Can't believe my parents let me go on a school night. My dad was an in the closet dead fan.
I took some sunshine with my girlfriend. Such a great night! It took us about 3 hours to find her parents van after the show. That parking lot was huge and we never thought to pay attention where we parked. I got home around 3 am.. my parents let me slide!
My first show, a day that changed my life. Thanks for posting! 👏👏👯👯🌈⚡️👯♂️👯👯♂️
You had one beautiful first show!
You picked a good one!!
Fabulous run starting at 35:50; Jerry starts moving down the neck and then scales back up in a series of flourishes all culminating with a big smile from Brent as Bobby takes over again on vocals. The Dynamic Duo! Great stuff!
Goddamn... they had so much snap in this era... the tone of the band is so nice... full of energy!
this show was one of my favorite bootleg tapes, played it till the tape snapped...great to see it live, miss brent.. thanks
I feel like when I finally get to Heaven, this is exactly how Ima be greeted!!! ⚡
😂😂😂 ❤ you ! Me too!!!!
Will you be in heaven or Terripan?
Well In will be 891 this August and
hearing the dead playing Shore line brings back many memories. All the back to the days of Ha8ight Asbury when Jerry and the boys were jamming in flat on Haight , just a group jamming, As well, the days of the electric cool aid acid test along with Ken . This comes from a deticated dead head.
Totally on point. The boys were completely locked in. Amazing show
Grateful to have. Been at these 3 shows at the First time they played at Shoreline!! Great show and a fun time and a Great trip!!💥😎Had a real good time!!🍄🍀☘️ ALL 3 nights!! Saturday night being the best,...in My opinion 🟪🟪🟪🍄😁🎶🎸🌅🌴🌳🔥💨💨💨💨💨💨💨💚💐
Bob is on fire towards the end of Throwing Stones, and the transition is epic
He brought the rain
In 87 it seemed to be cool to all the sudden be a dead head. Those of us who had been around could see the change in vibe. I'm sure the boys new it. That's what was told to me anyway. Regardless, great shows music for the heavens and love all over the land.new heads or old heads lets hope we all enjoyed every second we could. Thanks so much for the archives. It means so much to relive some of these times. Peace love ya all see you again Brent and Jerry ill look for you guys first when I get there. So many roads to go. I'm damn glad I knew you all these years eh Mr fantasy. RIP. Keep the peace heads new and old.
I was at this show on my girlfriend's birthday! I had only known her since July 4th of the same year and it was her first dead show! She passed out from alcohol and weed while I was up all night driving. It was a wonderful experience from start to finish.
I was lucky enough to be at this show. Shoreline and Irvine Meadows shows were some of my favorites,Henry J Kaiser shows were. great too,Oakland Coliseum too. I really miss the good old days.
Thanks as always. Priceless having these videos easily available.
Careful now...they’ll steal your face and leave your heart aflame...🔥❤️🔥
F*ckin sick show from the first note! Turn it UPP!!!
Holy shit. Just stumbled onto this. I was at this show and nearly lost the plot because of the mushrooms. The friend I was with was in some dark cavern on Neptune and was no help at all. Didn't remember the show being this good. Great to hear it a second time.
87 was like magic. So many shows I sold everything to see. Memories......
Voodoonola does God's work
Amazing show. Another beauty from 87. Loved the Addams Family interlude before Masterpiece too!!
my mum dropped me and my friends off at this show and ended up shopping in the parking lot and just waited for me and my friends.
after this show she was off designated driver to local shows.
thank you mum for being a wonderful part of the trip.
she always said this was church music
My Mom also n Pop, would drop us off. Such good parents, rest in peace all that have left this earth, all good parents. That let there kids be themselves. Peace n Love
Agree! My parents never had a problem with my choices until I became an over 50 adult. I love em still and bless all they’ve done for me in my 63 years. Still remember mom going and waiting in line to score us 4th row Zappa tix in 74 while in high school. And her telling me how she tried pot while playing bridge w her friend Jean upstairs at a head shop near the University of Maryland. Go mom! Sorry they took you from where you were happiest in Washington state. We’ll get those ashes in the bay I promise.. stick around, you too pop!
29 years later and it sounds like yesterday, what a cool period and place this was for seeing this band. Thanks for hosting this and the others.
Thank you Voodoonola bc without YOU I would still have never "been" to a West Coast show 😂💜❤️😎
I'm late to this party but I've got to say that this is the best Gràteful Dead live concert I've seen on RUclips yet.
It's up there
This is a great show!!!
I was there and these were the years
Yup
I would also like to express my gratitude to voodoonola 2 . I cannot even express how much it means to me to have access to this.
I have been blessed to have been to many shows, since I was a teen in the early 70s...not sure how I would have fared in life without it.
I’m not very techy , and I only got into you tube like 4 yrs ago...what a gift!
i always thought my brother esau was the most underrated dead tune from the mid-eighties on....of course, i have yet to find anyone that agrees with me on anything, but still...
Travis Crum I'm down with Brother Esau. Loved hearing it, love playing it. Don't know why the retired it. Always makes me think of my older brother.
Travis Crum I totally agree with you on that one ! Completely agree with you. My Brother Esau was wrongly maligned, consistently. One too many biblical allegories perhaps ? I don't know. But I think Esau was one of Weir's best compositions, right up there with Estimated and BT Wind. Esau totally peaked in the summer of 1987. This Shoreline version was great, but I think the best versions are from Oakland Stadium 7-24-87, or one month later at Angel's Camp 8-22-87. Look 'em up and check 'em out !

+Anthony Phillips....i graduated high school in 1987...first saw the dead in '86. i actually love 1977 the most but it's great they are releasing these awesome shows....fight the power! ps i will check out the versions you mentioned.....
I love the tune, but this particular performance of it was rather sloppy
Great sound quality! i love crispy boards. This show is balls-out!
Yes
Sadly ...they weren't too fond of Brent. His drug addiction was too much for the band. Even tho Jerry's addiction was terrible. How do I know? I lived next to their ticket salesman...and dammit. A memory just came to me. Back then, I had my hands on a bunch of unsold tickets because Steve had no use for them and idiot me...tossed them out. I am an idiot. Idiot!!!!!
I remember going to these!!!
Clean and Sober Garcia, and it shows...smokin hot!!
We "slept in" an orchard down the street that night (10-3-87) after losing our people. Hungry in the A.M. some folks in a school bus gave us a can of veggie chili... found an opener and ate it cold with warm beer...awesome. "Now what do we do all day?".
What do you do all day ? Troll Shakedown Street like 1000s of others ;-)
I love your story it sounds very real exactly the way it was everyday that for us
Thank you.. For a real good time..!!
Jerry and Brent really had a musical connection
GREAT SOUND QUALITY......Great opener too, THIS RIPPED IT UP....4 seconds into the vid I pushed the like button....i cant wait to hear the rest , I KNOW I am in for something good....
Cheese and rice I miss those guys. But we have our memories, and how sweet it is to have them. Tanks voo...
Voodoo in New Orleans, Louisiana:
You are the host with the post which makes happy Jerry's ghost.
One of the most interesting song lineups ever. None of the sometimes overplayed, usual tunes, but still plenty entertaining! Wish I'd been there. Pigpen is floating in the ether for this show.
Bobby's short shorts, back in the day!!!!! Oh!!!!! Brother Bobby!! Yes!! N the shoes!!! wooooo wooooo!!
And the ‘lunge!’
87' great tone big sound straight rock n roll dead
whats Jer's dominant effect in Candyman -- just tons of delay?
@@gbcrofton sounds to me like either a real leslie speaker or a rotary simulator effect
Thank you for saying that I feel like so many people overlook 87 as a great year. Not a lot of spaced out jamming but they just hit it so hard. Rock and roll indeed
Willow creek solid 4-6 ft that morning, then this show that night.. How lucky I was! Good thing I'm still here to enjoy it..
Great show! Love these '87 gems! Such an underrated era for the band, but one of my favorites. Brent at the top of his game, Jerry happy and focused, tight rhythm section... Just amazing.
The point when the Dead is jamming so intensely that you realize nothing else matters.
Holy smokes, what a great quality video!! This shit is stellar, and most refreshing! you made my day! Get yourself a beer! You deserve it! Thank you so much!
If some of the shows weren't pieced together you wouldn't be able to view them or relieve them!My hats off to all the hard workers that make it happen!!
berg12205 I agree with that. The thing I really like is how the band lets it stay here. Anything that isn't here or has been deleted was done by some corporate record industry master of greed.
Wow really good show, really high energy and you can really see Jerry and Brent connect musically. On a side note the mixdown for this who is really spot on. Phil is really present, must be the work of Dan Healy years but I'd have to look that one up I didn't see the band until the 90's. Thanks for posting another gem! They should release this one in my opinion!
You are spot on. From about '82 to maybe 1991, Healy did the full in-house mix and was generally in charge of the design and implementation of the in-house audio system. In my opinion, this era, especially '82-'88, was consistently the best sound for the band as far as overall quality of sound reproduction & spaciality and separation of the instruments and voices. After 1988, even before Healy left, they began to "digitize" their sound a lot more as well as running most of the instruments through more signal processing & compression (which led to a "muddy" sound in my opinion).
This is the second show from their first ever run at Shoreline. The venue was still very new to them at this point. That's why Weir sarcastically sings " T right here in wherever we are??...garbage dump!" during Minglewood..lol! For those who might not know ..Shoreline was built on a former landfill.
thanks voodoonola2 you have brought back so many great memories to me I was on tour from 84-91, I miss those days soooo much... seeing a vid of Augusta 84 is just more then I could ever want! that was probably one of my best shows ever!!! thank you Voodoo, blessings
I'm your first SUBSCRIBER you must be about fifty years old maybe 55
Theirs nothing better than hearing Phil's bass as clearly as the rest of the instruments! Kudos to the remix! A typically awesome shoreline show!
Fun shows. Killer early Pocky Way with Brent hitting the B3 instead of the cheesy keyboard. Ripping first set most of the way through, obviously some songs are missing here. This Candyman is amazing with Garcia maxing out the "underwater cathedral" reverb, it's my favorite version out of the ones I saw. And the Maggies Farm > Cumberland is perfectly executed and live in the moment was maybe the single greatest dance party experience of my many shows - the place just exploded in a vortex of swirling dancers.
Good times at the Dump. Funny to think how much the deadhead consensus group-mind hated this venue at the time given that it's now beloved in memory. Everyone was just grumpy it wasn't the Greek or Frost.
one of the best sounding and most sonic SBDs I can remember obtaining... great video, thanks voodoo
Danced so much on concrete at Dead shows that I'm on my third hip replacement. Really appreciated grass when there was some available.
This wasn't my first show but the first year I started to go to more shows. I had just started University in Santa Barbara and a Deadhead friend Bill I met during orientation that summer and I drove up the coast for the day and saw this gem of a show.
Thank you! This is a rare gem, with the video and great sound. It was one of the first dead cassettes I had. Amazing how Jerry did it so soon after the coma. Dead forever!!
Voodoonola your page is my favorite online experience every time
I am pretty sure I went to this show... of course it was a while ago. Smokin show... anyone else remember any of this? I recall Bill Graham was out in the parking lot on horseback talking to the kids... something about some counterfeit tix. I met some really cool dudes from LA, gave them a ride, I'd just flown in from Guam. At the show they had this giant music contraption thingy made up of a bunch of old pianos nailed together, open string. So it was this huge musical instrument a bunch of hippies would dance around and bang on... pretty tripy and super fun during the drums.
Tom Galey I remember that too, this was the GD's first run at Shoreline and was met with a major resurgence in counterfeit tickets, partly because of the popularity that ensued with In The Dark. Took forever to get through the gates that night, then heard about all the counterfeit tickets people were busted with.

+Tom Galey ...I remember Bill on a mini-bike..drunk kids talkin' shit to him. I'm thinking to myself, "really? This is BILL GRAHAM!".
This is the most variety I have heard ever! Each song was so different and complete surprise!
Me and my friends were arrested at this concert (just contained in the cell overnight), and it was hilarious- all the other people in there were dead heads and we spent all night talking about our favourite albums and tours we'd been on.
@@arcocola8183 Nice little fantasy you have there fella

Tried to smuggle a fifth of Bacardi 151 rum in, got busted at the gate so the guards say dump it. No way, it was full so i jugged it down and on my way I went into the show with a gallon jug of water. I told my buddies to watch me because I had feeling the 151 would kick in soon.
It did, I stood at the beginning part of the what can be considered the lawn ;) all night, didn’t move and sad to say dumped my water so I could piss in the bottle. On the way out after the show we missed the train so we started to walk. Stumbled upon a Carl’s Junior so we walked up to the drive through to order only to be told we needed to be in a car. Man, I wanted a burger. So off we go and low and behold a supermarket. We go in and look for something tasty, took us about 20 min to find the right thing to chow down. After all of this guess what I got to eat?
A pre made salad from the deli and we ate on the sidewalk. 😳🤓. How we got to the hotel will never be known.
Peace.
I really like these years of the band...This is a great show. Thanks!
+steven b late 80s were fire with jerry being clean n shit great isnt it
I was there, my second show!
Thank you
Top quality video and sound; and they played great, too.
Check out Jerry laughing at Bob during Masterpiece, when he sings “Newspaper men eating candy had to be held down by the big police.”
The fun continues! Go Voo go... Thanks for making this happen...I Love traveling in your time machine...WOW ~ Fall Tour 1987, as "Touch of Grey" became a top 10 hit and all of a sudden it's not a secret anymore....and the next growth phase begins...No more Red Rocks, and no more Greeks after 1989.... Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end !!! God bless you Voo...and "you aint seen nothin' like the Mighty Quinn" for sure
BRINGS BACK FOND MEMORIES. I WAS THERE..... MUCH THANKS
Smokin Hot. Thank you so much.
I love your dead sets great job editing sounds great!
Thank you for sharing
was there for all 3 of these, great shows and great party times after at the hotel hot tub with the n20 and x ;)
I'm a Touch Baby and nothing beats the jerry & Brent Show ;) Brent just Brings it !!!!! and Jerry not only gets a kick out of Brent . i think Brent was feeding him in so many ways !!!!
this is so excellent, unfortunately I was 8 and living in the middle of North Dakota at the time. Thanks for bringing me there now!!
that version of masterpiece is a gem. brent gave these guys so much energy!
yessss he did..loved brent..but Jerry was in rare form this show..loved it
You are the MAN, Voodoonola. This show is sweetness personified. Hey Pocky Way, God I miss that song with Brent.
Hey now excellent show. 87 thru 89 had many excellent shows. Some of 90 also. 87 Jerry back from his diabetic coma. Jerry was clean ( was not with Jerry but it showed ) good clean looking. Happy excellent playing and singing. And this put the entire band together playing excellent , crisp , many energetic, happy , fun shows
I saw the Dead from June, 1986 through July, 1995. The Brent years were my favorite by far. Man i miss his energy and emotion!
You can see Jerry’s admiration and respect for Brent. Brent brought incredible energy to this band. If you had the pleasure to see him, you would know. He was amazing.
I hate to tell you...they did not like Brent. At all. I think he was fabulous but he f ucked up and they got rid of him. Fired.
@@tonib.3016
So Brent's overdose was the Dead firing him? They murdered him?
Great sounding recording! Thanks for posting a masterpiece by one of my favorite bands.
A great night at Shoreline, memorable. Mickey getting cheers with his Giants shirt (Giants in the playoffs at the time). The full-on Quinn moment with the crowd surging as that good ol rusty truck barreled on along with no driver. I was discovering the pockets on the lawn to barefoot boogie. Ah, the days...
I saw all three shows of the inaugural Dead weekend @ Shoreline... nice to hear this again. Lot of fun. You can't find a ride like that no more...
Thank goodness for Voodoonoia. What a blessing to have these amazing vids!
Wow, this is so cool. I was at this show. Road trip via flight to Las Vegas (best cheap flights from Newark at the time) and then a rental car through Death Valley and Yosemite to the bay area. This was the fall tour after the release of "In the Dark" which really made The Dead kind of mainstream but it was a cool time. I was in my early 20s, taking time off school and working and we had a riot. Saw almost 100 shows in my day.
Jerry had such an energy in these years after his near death coma in '86...great shown on the 2nd and 3rd and 4th...we saw all three....
Thanks so much to Voodoonola2 for all these great Dead videos. Wonderful sound comes through in his editing. I consider the early-mid 80's (with Healy fully in charge after Betty Cantor left) the era of the best overall audio reinforcement for the band. Crisp, lively, with excellent sense of space and seperation for all instruments & voices (with particular emphasis on bringing out the very low and very high tones...notice how "punchy" & alive Phil's bass sounds). By the time of the beginning of Jerry's demise (1990 or 91) in terms of playing ability, their sound reinforcement had become totally "digitized" with no real sound reinforcement or monitors on stage. They also started to run all the instruments through tons of digital processing and compression that severely muddied their sound. Nothing Lasts (but that's OK). RIP Jerry Garcia. RIP The Grateful Dead.
Phil during Lovelight is going off! Thanks VoodooNola !!!!
