Side note: Some students have hidden talents, these are noted by three blank stars on the same menu you see the up and down arrows while instructing. When you instruct the hidden talents you can gain a gold star to overlay in one of the blank star spots on the hidden talent. When you get all three gold stars the student then becomes proficient in the subject (up arrows) and learns a unique passive. Felix for example has a hidden talent in reason magic but is bad at it (down arrows). When I maxed out his gold stars in reason magic by instructing he became proficient in it and learned a passive that grants him crit+10 when using black magic. He is pretty much made to be a Mortal Savant. It seems most students earn the gold stars by rank C.
Not sure Mortal Savant is quite as much of an end class for him as people think. Lone wolf + Astra (swordmaster exclusive mastered combat art) works wonders, and he gets a lot more speed that way. Do the math on Lone wolf + Astra to see how good it is, and factor in crit rate averaged across 5 hits (probably assume at least 1 crit in the 5 hits, 2 with S sword rank). Mortal Savant, while nice, leaves him very few magic options to use. He literally gets thunder, thoron, and nosferatu if you add some faith magic in, to work with, with a pretty bad magic stat of 17 (base for mortal savant, obviously will go up toward 25ish if you cap his level at 50). He only gets a very few uses of magic, and it doesn't dominate monsters and bosses the way astra + lone wolf does. While mortal savant is certainly a worthwhile path for him, don't forget the value of staying in the swordmaster route. I'd recommend getting him the class upgrade to mortal savant for the magic boost to 17, staying in swordmaster class, and using levin sword when you need 1-2 (or even 3 when upgraded) range with him. You could also consider switching him between swordmaster and mortal savant classes for different maps, depending on which option is more needed. If you don't go toward mortal savant immediately, you can instead focus on maxing out his sword skills at S+ and getting sword prowess 5, sword crit +10, and an additional swordfaire. He's good as a mortal savant, but imo he's busted staying swordmaster. If mortal savant had black magic uses x2 like warlock does, or he had at least one more magic spell, I'd say mortal savant might have more value than swordmaster overall, but as is swordmaster is great and very underrated for him. Sorry for the long rant.
@@joshuamanjarrez6321 Of course. But that alone doesn't make it a better class for him specifically. If you take a look at the growth rate adjustments between the two classes, swordmaster favors speed a lot more than mortal savant, and speed is an important stat for him (I understand this alone isn't an argument for keeping him in swordmaster for the last couple chapters, since he'll only get a few levels anyway). Otherwise, the growths are pretty comparable, just a bit less magic in swordmaster. He already has poor magic as is, and almost always needs the boost from promoting to mortal savant to hit the 17 magic floor. An accurate comparison of the two classes depends on what major benefits they provide. Swordmaster provides astra, a skill that is absolutely broken in combination with his Lone Wolf ability, which will add 5 damage per hit of astra, 15 for any of them that crit (usually 1 per astra). That adds about 35 damage on average to an astra, enough to take down some very strong opponents (say, the last death knight or two, or a beast). Mortal Savant gives him access to what, 8 uses of thunder, 4 uses of thoron, and maybe with faith developed a bit, 6 uses of nosferatu per map? Trust me, it runs out quick due to his short spell list. It's helpful, don't get me wrong, but astra provides that extra power for tough opponents that a few uses of magic damage doesn't really provide. If saving on weapon durability is an issue, just use a simple iron sword+ for most of the work. It eats the durability use up and is cheap to fix frequently. If 1-2 range is the issue, Levin Sword answers that, or even bows if you want to develop them up to C for close counter (which takes advantage of his high strength and affinity for bows). The two classes are highly comparable, but swordmaster gives an edge that many may value more than what mortal savant offers, for Felix individually. The distance between advanced classes and master classes is pretty minimal for the most part (with the exception of access to a mount for movement), and certain combinations of abilities like this example may allow a certain advanced class to perform better than a master class for an individual unit. You really have to weigh the whole picture to see which class will be of greater benefit to each unit. And that will involve some math. It's not quite as simple as master class always being greater than advanced class. If astra could be carried over into mortal savant after mastering swordmaster, I would agree, mortal savant would be overall better. Same if his spell list was longer, or he had more uses of his spells. As is, it's debatable, with the ability combination being a strong case to value swordmaster higher for Felix.
GalacticHeroEtna Is there a random chance of getting a star for each time you instruct, or do students automatically get a star after a certain number of instructs? If it is a random chance, can it be reset for? I'd do that for Byleth with Faculty Training if it's possible.
Good vid I’m 60hrs in the game and everything you said is spot on. My team should be so much better if I make it to my next play through without my wife killing me lol!
If youre playing normal lvl its a good idea to explore and share meals a lot at the beginning of the game. By month 7 you'll have so many instructor points that you can use almost every other professor for training, which helps a lot if you wanna collect every student or just raise your stats. But you will have to grind a bit with one day per month specifically for battle lvling
I've been watching many tip videos about this game and I must say that my goals for my students are coming together sometimes being a bit faster than I expected.
Pretty good tips, I came here to confirm my findings while playing. I just hope this mechanic doesnt make me lose steam on my subsequent playthroughs. 45 hrs and still on my first playthrough
In subsequent playthroughs you can use renown to boost skill levels, but it still takes a long while if you want those S+ ranks. I spent over 400 hrs to complete the story and side story 😩 still would like to replay Golden Deer and Blue Lions on maddening.
Just as a side note, you can choose to set any skill as a singular focus by picking the skill and then none. i.e. You can do the same thing with Annette manually by choosing reason + none.
Try not to use meals for upping your own students happiness. You can max the support fairly easy from battles and just talking. Use your meals to build support with students from other houses as its much harder to build their support. To keep your students happy use gifts and lost items. Also never turn in a lost item if the student is over 50% happiness. By limiting the number of meals you have, you have more points to train Byleth so s/he doesn't fall to far behind the students. P.S. Don't do tea time until you have like 6 explore points. Spending one explore point to up the support on one student is not a cost effective way to spend that point.
Thanks for this though. i spent so much time eating with my own students lmaoooo its only a couple of hours ago that i realized its pointless to do and instead do it with students from other houses

Could do a vid on the classes each character would be best at, also it might be helpful to ask viewers which house to do first. Plus, when you do end up making such videos if it's available to recruit them when not teaching that house, should you recruit them?
Of all the FE 3 house videos ive seen, this is one of my favorites! You got a good voice and structure very well! If you got any advanced tips like i.e. before a battle what should I do? How should I structure my abilities? Is it practical to have 1 offensive skill, 2? Should I use my stat boosting items on characters who have the weak stat or strong stat? Just a few ideas if you would like to use them lol
Some of the red arrows that have stars next to them is worth training. As you get new skills. Also its a good idea to check ranking for next class upgrade you plan for character. So if lance is C for example and you need C to pass the test, but you riding is lacking, just change the goals as higher weapon ranks arent that usefull in the end. If you are hitting for masterclass, but sure you have a hard to train stat selected to master (faith is pain to lvl).
Bullminator if you want to train faith, I suggest visiting the cathedral on your day off and make people who you want to gain faith participate. If you go during a holy day (noted on the calendar) you can get more faith experience that day
Great content for the video. This really helped me a lot with starting out. One complaint is that a lot of the time the video content has nothing to do with what you are talking about. It would have helped if when you were talking about the group activities if you had the group activity page front and center.
To make a good mortal savant class, stop ussing sword classes before, use mages or somethig like that and give him a sword. He will atack with magic and sword for the beginning and learn magic spells
Thanks for this video. It definitely helped me understand the skill growth and now I feel a little more comfortable with progressing through the game. It was a little daunting at first.
Thanks. Not sure I was paying attention Ingame and don't know what I'm training people into. Only just reclassed one for heavy armour... Shall I restart the game you think or keep pushing on?
Could you maybe make a separate video on training Byleth's weapon ranks? I'm nearing chapter 6 and my Byleth doesn't have a single C rank. It's my fault, but he doesn't really need it since he's the strongest on my team already.
If you want to take a adv. class that needs a A rank (Like swordmaster) You need to spend explore time training that skill (in this case Swords) Talk to Seteth, Manuela, Rhea and Cathrine for training in sword. Also don't ignore fishing and the greenhouse. This is free Prof exp! (explore time wise). And during the week of class work when students come to you with questions pick the most teacher like answers. They don't make the student as happy but seem to give much more prof exp. But ya I didn't start doing this right away and now Byleth is lvl 22 and i'm only just got B+ swords and i'm still like 250xp from A :(
Seminars and Faculty training is how I did it. For me though his main weapon is a sword which levelled up naturally. Then I focused on faith and reason for mortal savant and his unique class
I can't find a single video explaining the UI in this game, it's a convoluted mess. The up and down arrows make sense regarding experience, but what about the other symbols, like the hand pointing up? When eating meals with students, why are there blue/red arrows on one side of their portrait then another set of arrows on the right side?
Than hand symbols show that the professor teaches that subject well meaning extra experience for the student. Also, once you level up the renown statues, there will be another symbol indicating bonuses from that on the instruction screen. As for meals, up arrow means the students will receive full motivation from eating it. Down arrows mean the lowest amount of motivation will be recovered.

If u have them focus on one proficiency, they get 1.5 bonus not double. I wish it were double tho
Yeah you are right! Thanks for pointing that!
But having them work on one of the presets they suggest also adds an additional boost, doesn't it?
@@DrDestructo64 No, there is no difference using a preset goal and a custom one
