      They wear their timeskip outfit in a specific class. For example, Ferdinand wears his outfit as a paladin, but not as any other class. Petra wears hers as an assassin, Lysithea as a warlock, etc.
      You could pretty much call it their "canon" class.

    Misconception: People think that because a class isn't proficient in a weapon they shouldn't use it. Any class can use any weapon. Just because you want your Bernie to be an archer it doesn't mean you shouldn't make her a pegasus knight. If you do she becomes an op flying archer.

      Main point tends just to be that it takes away from time you have to focus on the weapon you want, as you have to learn the required weapon and skills for the class you want. That, and class you want typically is made specifically to benefit using said weapon- especially archer, which extends the range of the bow. You CAN use any weapon you want, but the class is pretty much going to decide your main go-to weapon.

      My first playthrough of Three Houses I made my Bernie into a Falcon Bow Knight lmao, same goes to my Leonie in GD playthrough. My first maddening playthrough was with a bunch of mounted units and I wanted to pull my hair out. Second playthrough I used Snipers, Assassins and even a Grappler and it was so much better. The ability to actually kill enemy units without using three of your own units is what’s king.

      "Mounted Classes are THE Best"
      Maddening emphasizes dynamic class structure that allows flexibility. Assassin, Grappler, and Sniper are outstanding infantry units (mobility, versatility, and allows you to use glass cannons). Then map dependent classes infantry units are Fortress Knight, Swordmaster, and probably Hero (the reason why is Chapter 13. Or chapters you abuse retribution to get rid of Bolting and Meteor mages. You can set up a deadly counterattack character).
      Mounted Units are great...for open maps. Defensive maps I disagree, especially on Maddening.

On maddening, Lysithea fuckin dies.

  • @silasisawesome
    @silasisawesome 5 лет назад +12

    Finally someone said it! Hilda isn't "better" as a fortress knight just because she is axe and armour proficiency. Proficiencies mostly only really matter for reaching certain benchmarks earlier, which can be valuable, but only as a means to an end, and wyvern lord or bow knight is just a much better end than a lot of their competitors. As some people have mentioned, warp, stride, rescue, and dance can help alleviate issues of movement which is true, but they also make high movement, canto, and flying shine even brighter. Of corse if you can just warp a war master right up to the boss of a kill boss chapter and end the map right then and there, then two extra move and canto don't matter as much as +20 crit does, but that’s not always an option, and sometimes having a bit move move or the ability to ignore terrain is required for such shenanigans.
    I will somewhat defend the gremory for its double magic uses, because physic makes high movement less of a necessity for healers, and having more if it is nice, as is extra uses of warp or meteor. As for mastery skills, if you are close to getting them anyway, you might as well go for it, but for the most part I'd say don't bother. There are good ones like Hit+20, vantage, and death blow (which is particularly amazing), but outside of meme builds a lot of them I find really don’t get to matter that much. That being said, things don't have to be optimal, and as long as it works, it is good enough, and so fun should come above all else. For my upcoming playthrough of the Blue Lions I plan to make an army of war masters because to me that sounds like a blast.
    All in all I conclude that Edelgard IS in fact the bad guy because she teleports away on numerous occasions, a hallmark of a true fire emblem villain.
    This now concludes my book rapport, thank you all for reading and I hope you have a good day.

      It's a lot easier to level a skill in you spend the 1000 gold to learn the class then you get the skill exp during combat. Consider that armour knights base def stat is a 12 you get alot out promote all your mages into armour knights since they benefit from learning the negative weight skills along with the increase to their base armour stat (you would need to do this early after level 10 since the advance classes have minimum 12 def). So far with the three routes I’ve cleared on hard/classic literally *anything* works aslong as you know what your doing, I honestly love armored/fortress knight if nothing cause they give Armored Blow and Pavis everyone says they’ve had issues with Movement but.... I honestly never have because I split my team to go do different things in fight and I tend to do bait and switch tactics. Either way it just sounds like another “play the good classes and dont let people tell you otherwise” rant even though you kept saying your not trying to do that.

His movement doesn’t save his life, better defense would. I tried desperately to salvage his speed with wings, a carrot, and a ring. There's like a dozen chapters in this game you can beat on turn 1 by just warping a wyvern to the end of the map and killing the boss. Instead of using those tools as a crutch to overcome the shortcomings of your bad units, you can use them to make your good (high move) units even better.

    I will still argue that Holy/Dark Knight is super counter-intuitive compared to Warlock/Bishop/Gremory. Those spell use doubling abilities are not at all offset by a mount when Stride is a thing. And the best mages are typically squishy units you don't want at the front anyway, and healers especially you usually want Physic on, which means they can totally go without a mount on the virtue of doubling their White Magic uses via Bishop.

    • @YinBoo
      @YinBoo 5 лет назад +1

      There is a fine line between proper Dark Knights and squishy mages that the player decided to give a mount for a boost in the oft overrated stat that is mobility. Specifically, Dark Knights like Sylvain and Lorenz can ride off far and away from the main body of the army, alone or with a mounted partner, and can survive several attacks from mooks during enemy phase and counter, often for the one-turn kill despite their lower Magic stats. That's multiple kills during enemy phase, plus likely another during ally phase...SOLO, on a turn by turn basis, without reliance on Stride. The squishy mages, on the other hand, prefer to coordinate with, say, a War Master, the Dancer and others, to swarm and one-turn kill demonic beasts. Just as you said, while also typically providing long range utility with Physic when the need arises, so that the riders and fliers never have cause to waste a turn fleeing or slurping an elixir.
      They serve two completely different, but no less vital roles, while fliers specifically head for distant corners of the map that are out of reach of any of your other units, otherwise their added mobility is completely wasted and they could just as well be regular infantry units.

  • @lovabletroll2212
    @lovabletroll2212 4 года назад +24

    I think previous fire emblem games have made everyone automatically assume that armor knights are useless, when they are actually quite good in this game. The low MOV is less of a hinderance with stride and warp available, and DEF is one of the better stats if you plan to overkill. I always have at least one in maddening since they will actually be able to tank hits in enemy phase, allowing bait tactics to not be purely luck based. I'm not saying it's the best class, but saying that armor knight is awful and that cavalier is always better is just as bad as people claiming it is the best class.
    Additionally, saying "play how you want to play", then bashing the non-mounted classes definitely makes your previous statement feel disingenuous. Plus, MOV is only the best stat if you are a skilled player, which most people who look to guides are not. They may have an easier time with something the FE elitists would consider subpar, such as Fortress Knight, but will avoid them like the plague because the people who have fun getting brutalized by the harder difficulties constantly bash them.

    • @Lady-V
      @Lady-V 4 года назад +1

      It doesn't seem disingenuous to me. Certain classes being better doesn't change that, and there's no reason to not bash a class for having low utility. The important part is it's the class not the player that is being bashed. When I personally talk about unit and class viability it's good to assume the player isn't dumb. For example Pegasus Knight isn't any worse, just because someone flew them into a pack of archers without dismounting. It's still a weakness that they need to dismount, but I'd argue it's a negligible drawback. It's fine to use what you want, but it still puts you at a disadvantage when looking at opportunity costs to use a class that has little benefit over others. Optimal play is not something everyone is looking for, but that shouldn't stop the discussion of it. Note that I'm not saying AK is bad (it doesn't matter what I think of it) it just means that certain classes win out and make the game less tedious. Another thing to discuss is what your ideas of good means in Fire Emblem. Mine are: things that reduce tedium and things that make the game easier. What makes things good are dependent on what your qualifications are for good things. I assume the highest difficulty as it draws out and makes more pronounced the differences between units. Newer players usually don't play on the highest difficulty, so it's less relevant to them, but if they want to try playing faster and with less tedium videos and guides can help them. Assuming the guides are actually correct, and IMO a lot of them I disagree with. I find that they usually might make good points, but miss important variables. Maddening is vastly different from hard mode, so I find older guides (made before it came out) to be out of date in a way.

There are no true physical sword based master classes: hero and paladin really should have been master classes as well. And every mounted class requires Lances and riding, and both flying master classes require Lances as well.
    Mounted may be king, but I see no reason to knock advanced classes or infantry based classes when these master classes are really poorly thought out. Dark Bishop has many advantages over dark knight, bishop vs holy knight in the same way. And gremory can be better than both mounted classes as well.
    People should train their units in their favorite skills regardless. Otherwise everything is just generic train up Lances and riding. Nearly an entire army of just Lances and riding. Your comparisons don't really make sense. The bow knight is a great class for it's range but it doesn't gain strength or speed growth bonuses; most cavalry classes actually lose speed. So it's not a perfect trade off: mounted often lose speed in exchange for a mount. Almost any unit can do massive damage with death blow: you just need to spend time as a brigand to unlock the skill first. The hero, swordmaster and assassin are not really outclassed by the mortal savant master class at all - they're probably better in terms of growth bonuses so master class isn't inherently better than infantry. In this game, mounted trades growths for movement on average so it's a decent trade off. But sword units don't even have a good master class promotion so they're always kinda at a loss; a mercenary is going to need to train up their Lance ranking if they'd like to gain a horse in this game, which is kinda stupid game design to require a Lance for nearly every master class.
      The flying classes are straight upgrades: falcon knight and wyvern Lord are probably always better than Pegasus knights and wyvern riders. So I'd always recommend the master class there.

    • @ArikGenerick
      @ArikGenerick 5 лет назад

      @@l.n.3372 no, the wyvern master is faster when mounted and does way more damage than any of the infratry sword units so there is really no reason to not have 4 wyvern masters, 2 warpers, 2 bow knights and a dancer plus either a falcon knight or mounted mage.
      infantry have less move and do less damage than the above classes in hard mode so they are pretty much useless besides getting some decent skills in the case of myrmidon or brigand

      It's stupid that the game doesn't have a damn class with swords like paladin or keep bow knight as sword/bow. I don't know why bow knight and dark knight aren't sword units anymore. Wielding swords in 3H was shafted hard because there are no mounted master classes that use them that are not falcon knight gender locked. Having paladin master class would have been the perfect solution, or have bow knight like it was before using swords instead of Lance. Such a shame.

    I agree with the idea that you should decide a final class at the beginning of the game and work backwards but I wholly disagree with the idea that movement is the most important stat. “Overkill” in a stat just means it can work in even more scenarios, and movement just means you can save yourself from when you mess up, it’s really not as useful if you’re efficient with how you kill enemies. Unless you’re doing a speed run then you absolutely need mounted units. Flying units and cavaliers create a great solution to the problem of misplaced units but they’re not “objectively better” than other units, swordmasters will absolute shit on them unless you have sword breaker, and even then it’s like a 65% double hit with a two hit KO chance. I think you make valid points for one style of play but this game is really way too easy to say only one thing works, and I promise on lunatic when units are buffed, those extra DEF points will be well worth trading for lower movement.

      Move is not only useful “when you screw up or misplace someone” move is powerful because it gives the player way more options. Is their an enemy with the meteor spell far away that’s a threat to your units? With a high move flier you can zip over and deal with it. Is their a chest that’s in a hard to reach spot? A high move unit is your best bet to get it. Does a chapter require you to save some villagers that are being attacked on the other side of the map? Units with high move increase your chances of saving them tremendously. Also being able to canto after attacking means you can run up to a group of enemies, attack, and then uses the extra move to get back out of their range so you won’t get attacked on enemy phase, an option that foot units don’t have.
      Also there’s just the classic problem of units with lower move getting left behind from the fight. Your units with 8 move will see more combat because they’re able to get into the thick of things more quickly. What good is a Swordmaster with broken stats if he only gets the chance to kill 2 enemies a map? I realize that may seem like an exaggeration because if you choose to turtle (a term for when you keep your army packed really close together and proceed very slowly) you’ll likely be fine and not struggle to much. But what needs to be understood is that you’re choosing to limit yourself by playing slow. If that’s how you like to play that’s totally fine! At the end of the day as long as you’re having fun and are able to beat the chapters without too much difficulty that’s all that matters.
      BUT. In this game flying classes are objectively better than all others. There’s literally no downside to putting every single melee unit on a Pegasus or Wyvern. The Wyvern Lord class has the same speed modifier as Swordmaster while also having significantly better strength and defense mods. Also, unlike the horse based classes, the flying classes don’t lower unit’s speed growth rates. I’m pretty sure wyvern lord actually raises speed growth a bit and I know falcon knight raises speed growth considerably.
      The only traditional downside to flying classes is the extra damage from bows, but 3 houses lets you avoid that by dismounting any time you want. You can fly your full 8 spaces, dismount and attack. Then next turn you can remount before moving and move your full 8 spaces again.
      Flying classes have basically no weaknesses and a buttload of strengths.
      Some people will argue that warp and stride means you don’t need the extra move but that’s just not a good argument because using stride on high move units is even more broken. Also mounted units are the best users of stride because being able to canto after using it means they won’t get completely left behind.
      For magic units it’s honestly case by case imo. Sometimes you want the utility of extra spell uses that gremory can offer you, and sometimes you’ll want the extra move and canto. Gremory will also give you much better stats in everything but defense so it’s a toss up.
      TLDR: play however you want as long as you’re having fun. The games easy enough to be beaten with pretty much any team setup, but flying classes are objectively better than all others in this game.

    • @cianodwyer5144
      @cianodwyer5144 5 лет назад

      Brian Clarkson I totally agree the flying units are absolutely broken, but it’s not just their move that gives them superior abilities, it’s in combination with their absurdly high STR stats this game, coupled with their (typically) very high speed, not to mention there beefier than they used to be. I was more disagreeing with the idea that it is the move stat that makes them superior. If the video had said “units with high move are really strong in this game” I’d agree but I don’t agree that it’s because they can move far that they’re strong. You’re right though movement can be utilized in a variety of different ways, I oversimplified it there. My main point is yes the units with high movement in this game are good but it’s not just because they have high movements it’s due to those specific classes getting bulked up in this entry.

If you have someone using swords, Swordmaster is a better class then Mortal Savant. By going Mortal Savant you're giving up +10 crit for black tomefaire. You can't attack with both swords and tomes in the same turn, so you should focus on being better with swords.
    Another example is people who make Dorothea a Gremory. Warlock Dorothea has black tomefaire. As a gremory she gives that up for x2 white magic. None of her white magic spells are very low usage so whats the point. Making her a Warlock also means she only needs C faith to get all her spells. That's somewhat misleading, as you're making Mortal Savant out to be a straight downgrade for no reason. It purely depends on h the unit's skills and stats along with the enemies on the map. For example, I personally consider Mortal Savant Lysithea to be an overall upgrade and her recommended class in general due to her ridiculously good spells and mag stat (and high stats in general) along with her soulblade skill. Sure, Swordmaster Levin Sword does the job decently as well, but overall I would take the class downgrades for the versatility of using magic alongside a sword for most levels that don't have speed demons or opponents with high res. For instance, I would take Mortal Savant Lysithea over Swordmaster Lysithea any day when fighting against a map with Death Knight on it, thought that is a bit of an extreme and rarity.

I've said in other places that I personally do not like mortal savant, and that I think sword users got a bit screwed in this game as they basically cap at swordmasters or assassins (not to say either one is weak, I actually like both of them) however I also am of the mindset that Holy Knights are also not good. Losing + to healing as well as healing uses is horrible in exchange for +5 damage on holy magic and a few movement. I say this with things like shoes of the goddess and march rings that can give infantry units the same movement as mounted. This of course brings us to Canto, which is an amazing ability...if you have one of two problems. A) your units are too weak to hold their ground where they are, or B) you have too many melee in a small area to allow them all to get hits in. Both of these problems seem to stem from your own choices to shy away from the "defense overkill" units and force everyone on horses to go in melee. I will fully admit that flying units in particular have fantastic utility, and can never be underestimated. I myself made my Blyeth a wyvern lord in my last playthough (mainly because come on dragons are awesome). But I've rambled on enough now, all in all there are different solutions to problems and neither one is "better" unless you go to the extreme to deny yourself the tools the game is giving you.

      I think that's a thing that a lot of people often overlook. Yes mounted units are awesome, especially with dismount being available, but you have so many additional movement options in this game. Stride is extremely easy to access, you get a dancer, lots of white mages get rescue and some even get warp. In addition tons of maps feature terrain that decreases movement of mounted classes. So there are several cases where it's simply more advantageous to not force your unit to train up two skills that may be entirely useless to them (riding and lances) and instead rely on some of the other methods for extra movement range.

    The best skill in the game comes from an unmounted unit: Quick Riposte. If your unit is above 50% HP, the enemy can’t follow-up and the unit with the skill will automatically follow up on the enemy’s turn. If a unit’s base stats are below a class’ base stats, that unit’s lower bases will match the class base stats. So Fortress Knight isn’t great as a class, but it’s phenomenal for increasing the base defense of a unit before reclassing to Warrior or Brawler.

In fact, certifying classes for a unit that they don't naturally fit into can in them getting a higher base stat total than they would with their most optimal classes, but the stats get evenly distributed instead of specialized.
    You can get away with using any class on any unit you want on Normal and Hard. Maddening on the other hand, is not so forgiving.

    Later game non-mounted units with 4 move? What is this, Gaiden?
    But it's honestly not surprising that you're seeing the advice that you are. When you consider that 3H has brought in a bunch of new people and even then there's a decent chunk of people who think of dark knights in Awakening as a gimmick class despite its high movement and movement pair up bonus, I would be more surprised if there wasn't a lot of poor assumptions going around.

    One thing I love doing is Swordmaster Ultra Instinct Ferdinand. I start him off as a Myrmidon, then go to Thief, I put him in the white heron cup for sword avo +20, give him an evasion ring, make sure he learns alert stance, and then finally make him a swordmaster

    Thank you so much for making this, there are so many videos that just want to tell you how to play the game, but how you play it doesn’t matter. Worrying about if you’re playing 100% optimally is going to hurt your experience and enjoyment. The best way to play this game is to go in blind and do whatever feels right (and if that means choosing an armor class over a Wyvern that can take plenty of hits, fly anywhere it wants, deal loads of damage AND double, who am I to judge) some of these videos can be written off as someone who just wants to talk about this game they like, and that’s great! I like this game too! but others are obviously just feeding off of new players uncertainty to reel in some views.

    Mounted units aren't that great when every other map is plagued with stairs.
    Beat my first playthrough with 6 assa/swordmasters (crit) and my 2nd with 6 gremories. Both fairly easy, as you are able to just mow through maps in 1 or 2 turns aided by a +mov gambit.
    Beyond how broken crit stacking is, there's also little reason to use mounted units when fliers are so ridiculously good in this game. Their stat growths are insane when compared to cavalries too.
    No reason not to make all your cavalries into falco/wyvern lords.

    I think the only reason to go Fortress Knight in any situation is if you have Dedue and want someone who will take 0 damage to literally ANY physical unit. Give him a March ring and/or some boots and he's your walking battle tank

    I don't try to make them into another class because I find it better to add other skills to them. I still make Felix a mortal savant, but I add faith and bow to make him even more dangerous. I find calvary to be more difficult than it's worth tbh. And armor knights don't suck if they have speed enough to dodge the dangerous attacks and defense enough to absord the rest. I think the point is that yes, you can play how you want to, but you can also lose the balance in your team if you aren't careful.

    • @sothe0539
      @sothe0539 5 лет назад +3

      I agree. In addition, dark bishop is an advanced class anyway, once you're done with it Hubert would probably become a dark knight anyway, since gremories are female only and reason magic on Mortal Savants isn't that classes main focus. One doesn't take anything away from the other.

    I know this is an old video, but I got the game recently. Honestly, I find being slow less of a problem then units who I want working together moving at different speeds.
    If your units all move at the same rate, it doesn't matter if they are that slow. You could even split it - a slow squad with armor knights & casters, and a faster squad with mounted units & archers.
