    Wish Assembly or Lure were mentioned in the video; very useful to shove enemies off of tiles that give them crazy avoid or defense, especially bosses.
    Edit: Also, just as some additional information to say that it's not universal, some bosses are immune to being moved from gambits if they have the 'Commander' ability, particularly late game bosses. Just something to keep in mind.

      Considering if you want to use Fliers you have to use Assembly, for the most part.
      Makes me wonder actually, if they add Dark Flier, they better add some Flier gambits that are a little better suited for them.

      I wouldn't say that. Advance Wars fits that criteria more. Unlike Fire Emblem, you have the same puny units as your opponent and casualties from both sides are actually expected. All of your units have equal strength as your enemies and you won't one shot counterattack everyone like you did in Fire Emblem.

    My battalion story:
    I chickened into doing Normal difficulty for my first route (Blue Lions) on account of not having played FE since Radiant Dawn. I then proceeded to overzealously level my core units, anticipating some sort of abyssal gauntlet of death in the endgame.
    In the end, it was a slaughter. But just for curiosity's sake, I reloaded and used Stride and Dance of the Goddess to catapult a level 51, triple-spear-wielding Ingrid into the final room of the game on turn 1, avoid-tanking and nuking every gremory in sight, and basically snoring through the boss's health bars while the rest of my team sat back and had a tea party, I guess.

    Don't forget the Fraldarius Battalion. The Gambit, onslaught is nice, but the real reason to use it is for the meaty +20 crit. Shame Felix is weak with authority, he would get a lot from daddy's troops.

    • @nickprice7716
      @nickprice7716 4 года назад +17

      Felix’s battalion is a paradox: it provides boosts he loves, but it interferes with Lone Wolf, is weakening his raw damage output. The fact that his authority sucks is a clue that he probably shouldn’t bother with battalions.

    • @Tom-vx7qh
      @Tom-vx7qh 4 года назад +60

      @@nickprice7716 the bonuses from battalions far outweigh lone wolf after early game. Most physical battalions even give at least +3 Mt so you only give up 2 damage in exchange for all the other boosts. Even Jeralt's Mercenaries would be better than no battalion.

    • @boredomkiller9985
      @boredomkiller9985 4 года назад +4

      Late game battalions are nice on Felix as he will get good bonuses including in mt that will equal or surpass lone wolf and gambits are almost a must. Thing is lone wolf is really great early on when 5 mt is a crazy amount of additional damage but since his authority is weak you kind of want a battalion on him to get skill levels faster even if he is not getting a lot of stars from them since teaching in class or through goals is going be slow.

    • @SirVyre
      @SirVyre 4 года назад +15

      @@nickprice7716 Don't think of Lone Wolf that way. Think of it as a supplement for long fights. It is not irregular in Maddening Mode late game chapters for Battalion endurance to hit 0. If you give him Jeralt Mercs or anything early on, and teach him in authority, he will rich a C rank in authority pretty quickly, before the end of school days, and that gives him access to some awesome battalions with 8 MT and other bonuses that far outweigh Lone Wolf.

    I feel like the impact of Defensive Tactics is a bit overstated. Granted, I tend to mostly run B or up gambits for their higher stat buffs but even off their 100+ endurance, they rarely ever dip into the yellow, so making sure you keep them topped off before battle should make sure they'll rarely if ever run out mid battle. I only really see use in Defensive Tactics if you're actually going to incorporate the Battalion skills into your builds (and even then, I'd say only Wrath or maybe Renewal would actually be worth it since Vantage and Desperation are fairly reasonable to get the regular versions of)
    Also I feel the King of Lions Corps, while inferior to the Immortal Corps, deserved a spot. A massive +10 Attack and +15 Crit makes any War Master into a health bar shredding monsterkiller, its C rank means it's very accessible and even within the realm of possibility for Felix to obtain, its Gambit has some pretty decent (though not Fusillade or Ashes and Dust level) of AoE and the 5 Avo penalty is next to meaningless compared to how monstrous your offense becomes.
    I also highly encourage for anyone looking for battallions for their units (especially low-Cha ones less interested in offensive gambits anyways) to check up the max stat boost list. Some of them have a lot of hidden potential not obvious from their Lv1 stats, like the Edmund Troops from Marianne's paralogue giving a ridiculous +40 to Hit (and still a solid +5 to both sides of Attack) making sure your Bow Knight can hit reliably even at very long ranges.

    To be honest, games with subtly hidden mechanics such as these have an appeal. An air of intrigue, if you will. Always something to dig up and look over. It's damn satisfying to determine a new factor in the game play that you were otherwise unaware of before you fielded your units. And hey, that's okay with me. As for me? I'm just some guy on the internet whispering his pleasure in RUclips threads.

    Might be a case of Maddening getting easier before the end of pt 1 but I found Duscur gambit you get from Dedues paralogue to be great on Dimitri as he will take about 0-5 dmg from most enemies (haven't gone through pt 2 yet so I dunno how useful it is there). Like you said I can use Retribution on him and just send him in anywhere

    I always give my low-Charm units support gambits because they can never hit the offensive ones. Hubert is a paradox; his Charm is bad, but his ability boosts gambit damage.
    It's also great to use Battalion Wrath/Vantage/Desperation/Renewal at every opportunity, but they have to be paired with Defensive Tactics and a relatively high endurance battalion to be reliable.

    Also its good to note that the DLC with Anna does have a very useful gambit unlock if you beat her paralogue. I won't spoil what it is and let people who want to look it up on Serenes or something, but in short it combines max endurance with great utility, and it's flier compatible.

    Since Chaz praised any battalion that raised Hit/Crit/Avoid, a special shoutout to Edmund Troops(+40 Hit), Fraldarius Soldiers(+20 Crit) and the various +20 Avoid battalions, but especially the Blue Lion Dancers for effectively giving you the 4 way Heron dance from PoR/RD.

  • @zenkichihitoyoshi9513
    @zenkichihitoyoshi9513 4 года назад

    It may be late from the release of the video but I'll mention some battalions I'll find extremely useful;
    Edmund troops, a B battalion, gives 40 hit and 2 uses of flash fire arrows, a gambit identical to Jeralt's but with the addition of fire damage on the field. Extremely potent, especially on some units like Bernadetta that even on maddening can safely stack +hit to use deadeye from downtown to destroy units from such a distance that only bolting/meteor and counterattack bosses can respond to.
    Another favorite of mine is the blue lion dancer corp; negative stats but a significant buff to avoidance to give to your already evasive dancer for a stupidly powerful one use gambit which is an AoE dance with the same spread of fusillade/blessing (so up to 4 extra attacks from specific units). Completely breaks the logic of the game (B authority if I remember correctly)
    Also worth mentioning Fraldarius soldiers and Goneril soldiers for their buffs on hit/crit and might, respectively the battalion of the Felix paralogue and Hilda's paralogue. (B authority)
    Another selection of good/very good battalions are the A rank Wyvern corps of Seteth, Dimitri's soldiers that trade negative avoidance for a powerful two use gambit with godly might (plus nice bonuses on hit, crit and might) and some of the magic ones like Macuil Evil Repelling Co for a mix of utility and stats on mages whose primarily objective is to nuke down targets without being hit.

    Excellent video! Great editing as per usual, and equally informative.
    My favorite battalions to use (outside of the 3 lord battalions) are probably stride and retribution. The utility is unparalleled and it's amazing to have access to them early on.
    In terms of offensive battalion, I tend to prefer using 2 use gambits over single use gambits save for extremely high level magic gambits (which almost always have single usage). I'm talking about high level resonant lighting etc which provide high magic boost but only have a single use. A few gambits give both strength and magic boost so those are great for mixed attackers like Lorenz (funny enough but the Gloucester battalion actually gives great split boosts).
    The flying battalions with lure, assembly, and reversal are also great for bringing enemies closer to your team. Assault troop is excellent for its multi tile attack range; it can help to crack 2 adjacent monster tiles, so stacking assault troop is great for breaking barriers to get ore.

    Offensive Battalions really see their uses on Maddening mode because of the supped up enemy stats forcing you to half specific groups of enemies, so that you can even survive.
    Also, Chaz here didn’t focus on it much but the free attack, magic attack, prot, rsl, and charm bonuses cannot be overstated. Often times even on HM, the attack bonus is often the difference between killing the enemy and being like 3 str/mag off from doing so. Of note, shit like the Duscur Heavy Solider Battalion or any of the Heavy Armor Battalions can make your say decent 25 def frontliner into a much more durable 34ish def frontliner. All without any other boosters in mind.
    TL;DR Battalions are worth it alone for the sheer stats they provide. The Gambits are just that cherry on the top (for NM and HM) and the difference between life and death (on Maddening)

    If you've got a mage with issues hitting; the Macuil Evil Repelling co. is perfect with +30 hit they will be much more accurate.+7 magic is nothing to sneeze at either and +10 charm is immense for gambit accuracy. It's only issue is being A rank, so it may be troublesome to get on those without a strength in authority. It can be gotten at a reasonable time from the Oil and Water (Manuela + Hanneman paralouge).

    I feel like if you really want to level battalions, there's actually a unit very good at it, and surprisingly, not because they can get Model Leader.
    Manuela's Faith spell library is filled with spammable spells, and casting magic will raise their experience. I feel like even in short maps, Bishop Manuela can pretty reliably get a level 1 battalion to at least level 4.
