@@switchie9762 you do realize you’re literally watching a video which mentions and rectifies this problem, right? This is literally the case for most historical claims and always has been. For example, the claim that France has the no. 1 military history isn’t accurate , and was done via keyword Wikipedia searches (which would count diplomatic wars). People still take it as fact Or the belief that winter was the main cause of Russias success in WW2. History is always simplified, idk why you’re so convinced it’s all Britain
@@switchie9762 but you took issue with the claim that Portugal was invaded? Napoleon invaded and occupied Portugal, and then occupied Spain, which had been its ally. So how can Napoleons invasion of Spain be counted, but not Britain, who Napoleon clearly didn’t want there? That’s like claiming Britain, Canada and the USA never invaded France in WW2, they simply “fought alongside Free France” 😂😂
Someone had to bring a bit of order to the world. Look what’s happened since we tried to let countries govern themselves, we tried to give people a chance to sort themselves out, and everything ended up going to the dogs. 🤣
And then you guys want to complain when brown people are in your country haha. Nothing compared to the millions killed by famine caused by the English who took over their land. Or the rapes, pillaging, slaughters comitted by your people on innocent people on their own land
It is very interesting to note that many countries that gained independence stayed as a part of the Commonwealth or joined it later. The Commonwealth is a subject worth investigating and one that would surprise many people
Malta was missed. In 1798 when young Napoléon was a Republican general, he was on he's way to invade Egypt, to block British trade from India. He stopped in Malta and conquered it. British invited the island in 1800 and got it "official" in 1814 as part of Treaty of Paris to end the Napoleonic Wars (for now). Malta was a strategic naval base, half way between Spain and the Middle East and it played a key role in both World Wars, later one got more attention. Modern Republic of Malta got her independence in 1964.
The Maltese invited the British to come to their aid against Napoleon to free the island. They formally wrote to the queen and invited the armed forces over to Malta and made a treaty with the queen, and the Maltese accepted British forces help, but the Maltese argued that since they've formally invited the empire over, they had the right to severe that pact and part ways with the empire. Eventually the British spent 200 years in Malta regardless, and in the early 1960's then Malta prime minister first tried to negotiate with Britain to let Malta become part of it, but the Brits refused and from then, they pushed to gain independence and eventually succeeded in gaining freedom from the Brits in 1979.
@tobe1207 I agree, I was mostly being silly. If you play a game of Alternate History where you look at the values of a country and what they would do if they had the power of the British Empire or the American hegemony, pretty much every other country would have had worse outcomes for native peoples/ conquered/colony. So you are right about silly apologies unless for a joke. People aren't rational though and find it hard to look at hard bits of history in a sober, levelled sort of way. If you ever want to feel awe at a man's accomplishments despite the hate he gets nowadays- Capt James Cook was a brilliant human.
We never beat Nepal but we admired their fighting abilities so much we amalgamated them into the British Army, the Gurkhas, and they still fight for Britain today, very brave and loyal warriors.
They fight now to support our special forces because their the only unit in the British commonwealth we now they can handle it without worry, and this is a Cheshire talking.
Fascinating as always You will know this already I suspect but just to say that the British Empire was about trade and most of the invasions were about protecting that rather than territorial gain. It developed haphazardly and was policed by the Royal Navy backed up by a relatively small army.
Falklands is ours (U.S.A.) because you soft brits are a U.S. vassal, and our red headed step child. You basically belong to us now, and always will. ha ha ha And thanks for giving us the pleasure of whooping your ass in 1776 & 1812 👍
The interesting ones for me are the ones that start with British assistance, and end with the British just going "you're part of us now". Iceland: Yeah, you can stay here for a bit, but remember this isn't an invasion. Britain: You don't happen to speak French, do you?
Another interesting one a lot of people have not heard of or know little about is "The British Crusade against Slavery" If you haven't already seen it, it would be great to hear your thoughts on it,

I know you dig the Napoleonic wars. The War of 1812 was byproduct of that. The book 1812 is a compendium of two books: The Invasion Of Canada, and In Flames by Pierre Berton, author from the North West Territories you might recognize as the guy who interviewed Bruce Lee
A lot of my ancestors suffered under the British Empire but I hold no grudges against the modern British nation state, though that may be because I was born and raised here ;) some context for the invasions would always be welcome, however. For example I wasn't aware whatsoever that Britain didn't establish a presence in West Africa until it had to forcibly abolish the slave trade, as it was so profitable that the Warlords of that region didn't want it to stop. That was the casus belli anyway, but they still hadn't invaded before then, so.. All European Empires were competing with each other at that time. Had Britain not ruled over India, it would have been the French, or the Dutch, or the Portuguese, or the Mughals, or the Marathas, etc.. The days of Empire are over thankfully but at the same time the world is still a geopolitical chessboard, whether we like it or not
I'm an oldtimer Englishman who is astounded at that list. "Invaded" has to be used loosely, because some countries needed protection from aggressive forces intent on conquering them, were "handed back" when the threat was irradicated.
You're trying to deceive the Anglo-Saxon. your country has existed for 500 years only by robbing other countries. You are nothing of yourself. You robbed the former independent countries that became your colonies by buying up raw materials there on the cheap, and exporting it to your island, and there you sold deep-processing goods for a lot of money much more expensive than they cost in continental Europe. You are a nation of Parasites

they didnt invade Portugal or its colonies because the two countries always had amicable relations, including a alliance made in the 14th century. Although there was technically an invasion in the 19th century, Portugal asked for british troops to help get rid of Napolean

We are a pretty mixed race in Britain. Being that we where invaded many times and are a mix of Norman, Anglo Saxon. Viking and Roman . Things are never quite as simple as one video. Britain has had influence on many parts of the world since being conquered and its better to learn and understand Britain's history. Not all conquerors succeeded.
Not enough emphasis is put on "The Industrial Revolution" which played by far the biggest part in "this drama". With out all the inventions ( cast and steel being the biggest ) they would'nt have got too far into the dominions.

As a British man I can tell you the reason the UK invaded all those countries is because of our shitty weather, it was a choice of sit in the house and watch the rain or go somewhere hot and set up shop! It's no coincidence nearly all the places we invaded are warm!
Portugal is a long standing ally of Britain. Britain liberated Malta from the French in 1800 and it was ruled as a British protectorate until 1964. The entire island of Malta was awarded the George Cross for resisting the Axis powers during the second world war.

The French bit is a little misleading saying we controlled the place. It was a little more, we were invaded by the French (William the conqueror) and with him came his lands in France which were then folded into the British crown. A good number of English kings lived and are buried in France. The Hanova bit too is a little flakey mentioned. The guys in charge of the place became our monarchy
Good vid. I imagine that the official British document archives for all of these conquests/wars/battles must fill up a huge, Indiana Jones-type warehouse somewhere in the UK. BTW, the Pitcairn Islands in the Pacific are a British territory. On one of the islands, the mutineers of HMS Bounty landed and existed.
Portugal has never been an enemy of the British and has always been allied. Malta requested Britain to help them in fighting Napoleon and gained it's own rule in 1974 having been a part of the Commonwealth since joining in 1964.

The word "invaded" does some very heavy lifting in these videos! But someone should really make a video of all the times Britain (especially England) was invaded or attacked. That's a truly staggering number.
It is nothing in comparison to the Mongol Dynsasties, Rome etc. How far back do you want to go with this crap? The fact is UK is no longer in that space. How about we look forward to our future rather than looking to the long distant past and trying to cancel it or using it to try to discredit a country today. @@YouGotOptions2 Thank you! That's what I was hoping people would do. The word invaded isn't appropriate for many of the situations in this video. Some nearby Nationalists would struggle to justify their victim status.
@@lokki245 I’m confused… literally speaking, no one’s invaded the United Kingdom and I’m assuming you’ve confused it for England or Great Britain. The closest occurrence I can think of was during WW1 when a German battleship attacked a coastal town, sitting directly in their waters. But that’s more of a bombardment… The United Kingdom has never been a victim like you’re implying, but I don’t think that means they’ve always been the aggressor, I also don’t understand the problem with the term “invading”, it hardly means conquest. WW2 Operation Barbarossa is still referred to as an invasion even when it failed. Napoleons invasion of Russia was still an invasion when it failed. In fact, this list could be much bigger if you change the terms to “conflict with”.
@@XXXTENTAClON227 I suspect the reason for your confusion is because you haven't read what I actually wrote.. I didn't mention the United Kingdom and, yes, I am talking about a very long time span. My point about the word 'invaded' was that Britain [sic] didn't invade many of their countries in the way that is implied by this video - or implied by the other videos and books of the same ilk. My point about "Britain , and especially England" was simply that they were invaded (often unsuccessfully) relentlessly throughout history, very often by their closest neighbours (including those within what is now the UK) and often by a combination of those neighbours. I was simply pointing out the very loose way that the word invaded was being used.

Arguably, by the 1910's, the Germans had largely managed to present a credible opponent to the Royal Navy, with the 2nd largest navy in the world, even bigger than the US Navy or Japanese Imperial Navy of the time (both then up-and-coming navies and powerful forces themselves) But the Royal Navy was still far larger than even the Kaiserliche Marine.

And that is putting it mildly. The British became strong because we had no other choice. Other Empires were willing to destroy us as fast as they could get away with, so Britain had to play them at their own game. They just didn't like it when they realised Britain was better at it than them.
Truth. Empire was the route to survival against the much more powerful and populous European powers. It was a trading Empire seeding colonists. The voluntary memberships of the Commonwealth is a strange sign of the "hated" occupation.
@@manuelrodriguez2637 That’s barely talked about in England. Spain subsequently lost hundreds of ships and soldiers in a counter-counter attack. Presumably, this helped inform the Royal Navy leading to the wars with France.
Britain had its fair share of invasion. The Romans in the first century who took control and killed or sold into slavery any Briton who defied them. The Viking invasions throughout the late 8th/throughout the 9th century who butchered and pillaged the Anglo Saxons And the Viking descendants, the Normans who conquered England in the 11th century and subjugated the English as second class citizens in their own country. I don't acknowledge the argument that because England invaded Norway in 1810 and 1812, they also invaded Denmark. The narrator did make a few mistakes, one being "England" instead of Britain. The welsh with their long bows were an integral part of the victories in early days, and the Scots were known to "stand" under punishing conditions to turn the tide of battle. I've lived many years in southern Spain at Costa del Sol, specifically in Malaga province (Andalusia) and there is definitely a HUGE AMOUNT of British inhabitants in a lot of towns in that region (for example in Benalmádena and Fuengirola). Not to forget the Canary Islands. I lived for a while in Tenerife, in the southern part of the island in a small town close to Las Americas, and I remember, when I moved in to town and started getting to know the people living there, that a high percentage of the inhabitants were British. Besides that, I have to mention that I have double-nationalitie as I'm French 🇫🇷 and argentinean 🇦🇷, and I gotta add the information that in Argentina (a couple of hundred years ago) the British have tried 2 TIMES to invade the country attacking Buenos Aires (Argentina's capital city) being rejected both times, but they've occupied the "Malvinas" (called by them "Falkland Islands") together with other islands in that part of the South Atlantic. Argentina has tried to get the islands back attacking in April 2, 1982 and starting a war which England won and as a result, the islands are STILL occupied and under the power of Britain and Argentina keeps claiming and trying to get them back (by diplomatic lines and international justice) so far with no success.

The United Kingdom has never been a victim like you’re implying, but I don’t think that means they’ve always been the aggressor, I also don’t understand the problem with the term “invading”, it hardly means conquest. WW2 Operation Barbarossa is still referred to as an invasion even when it failed. Napoleons invasion of Russia was still an invasion when it failed. @@XXXTENTAClON227 I suspect the reason for your confusion is because you haven't read what I actually wrote.. I didn't mention the United Kingdom and, yes, I am talking about a very long time span. My point about "Britain , and especially England" was simply that they were invaded (often unsuccessfully) relentlessly throughout history, very often by their closest neighbours (including those within what is now the UK) and often by a combination of those neighbours. @ The country of Argentina has never owned the Falkland Islands and there is no such thing as the Malvinas.
Niall Fergusson also has another really good book called "The Pity of War" which i used as part of my A-Level History Coursework and it was surprisingly interesting, talking about the causes of WW1.
I can't find any source that says England invaded Finland, Estonia and Latvia during the Crimean war. Wikipedia says there were some Finish harbors attacked in order to block shipping to Russia, that's it!
Also, England helped Baltic States in WW1 to gain independence from Russia. Is that considered invasion?
@@switchie9762 And what's your source?
It’s was in our blood, as we the British were invaded and colonised for two thousand years starting with Roman occupation of 400 years! I blame the Romans, they started it.
7:37 Hong Kong was supposed to be fully autonomous for 50 years following the 1997 handover to China. China broke that agreement in 2020 when they invaded so either that handover agreement is torn up and nullified making Hong Kong an independent sovereign country or they go back to being a British territory.
Except we Brits don't have nearly the might to back up any threats we can make to take Hong Kong back.
Yeah, good luck with that
Well done young lady! History has always fascinated me.
Always been a huge fan of the British Empire, right alongside the Romans. Largest domain in human history and are just below France in most won wars in the world.
will catch up soon as France hasn,t really won a war since 1815 LOL.
@@asl7235 They won a lot, even after 1815.
EX: Greek Independance-Morea Expedition, Crimean War, Second Opium War, Second Italian Independance, WW1
And even WW2, they are considered as a victor etc...
Should see the list of countries who invaded England. Also, England never invaded any of those in the video, it should say Great Britain.. the British Empire.
I'm so proud to have enhanced so many nations, where are the thank yous.
We can declare conventional war and win vs every nation on earth apart from USA. Geographically we are like Japan but worse because you need a huge number of marines who can only land in certain places that are quite inhospitable. What you going to do? Our homeland is basically a castle aircraft carrier in the sea.
Couldn't help but notice the vast majority of those countries are doing much better today than their neighbors not directly influenced by Britain. If you name most the countries never colonized... it basically gives you a list of all the third world countries in the World.
It's a long one, but I would love to see you react to The Melancholic Comfort of Late 90s Horror by kaptainkristian. As a 90s kid I found it to be a good video essay on the state of the horror genre in the latter part of the decade as well as being quite a beautiful reflection on reminiscing, loneliness and melancholy in general.
Not sure why Portugal would be on the list tho, the english helped them in the reconquista and they have the oldest alliance that's still in effect, dating back over 600 years.
Edit: 650 years exactly as of 2023 actually.
@@switchie9762 well i guess during the anglo-spanish war ? They captured a couple of towns in brazil when it was still a portuguese colony, so technically maybe it should be on the list of "invasions".
I don't know why, but the pronounciation of Qatar as 'cutter', just grates on me, it is 'Ka-Tar', maybe I just have it wrong, who knows, but, I just don't see 'cutter' in that spelling in any way shape or form.
Listen I'm not saying the Empire was free of atrocity, no Empire in history was. However I do know middle eastern women aren't celebrating the British leaving their countries. Most of Hong Kong felt the same before we gave it back. Imagine Britain ruling your city and then Communist China coming to take it. I know which one I'd choose.
I depends on if you believe that the 'backwardness' of these people happen because of the british. The Middle east is probably the best example, the middle east was far more free, stable and accepting of other people before it got colonised. Even more, most of the extremism on the middle east was directly of indirectly created by American influence.
If you also could say this about china is another question tho.
@@Broken_Mesh That statement needs a whole load of qualification. You'd have to consider the enslavement of East Africans who were brought to the middle east in their millions, the ongoing schism between Sunni & Shia Muslims, the recent (decades after the British left) moves by religious fanatics to subjugate the rights of women and minorities. The Palestinian question. Sure some of the problems might have been caused by British actions, but many times the issues were just under the surface anyway.
@@Broken_Mesh The backwardness is a direct result of the oppressive aspects of their religion and those who use it as a tool to gain power, which existed before British rule and came back strongly after. It definitely was not more free on a human rights level for the average person. More free to choose its own destiny via the oppressive dictatorships that seized power there before and after, sure.
A lot of this was done under sail when it took many months to go any distance, and the journey itself could be as hazardous as the encounter on arrival.
As far as the India territory is concerned, there where 3 places that the British did not invade: Goa, Damão and Diu the Portuguese where there much before the British. Portugal was the first to reach India, China (Macau peninsula was given to Portugal because they annihilated the piracy from China’s southern sea) Japan, the Portuguese where the first European nation to reach they shores. Last but not the least, the island of Timor off the coast of northern Australia coast.
I actually think the video leaves those areas if you watch the video. I can see gaps that aren’t filled in
That's how the countries were spelled when they were invaded.
We punch above our weight.
Also, we're like cats. If something looks nice, then it's really ours and you were just holding on to it on our behalf for a while.
You left out the Falkland Islands, (which BTW, were re-taken from Argentina just 41 years ago, in 1982)!
England, "Frienemy" of the Dutch. Many battles against each other, many battles along side each other. Interwoven.
Dutch never really invaded England, but they did destroy the English navy yard in Chatham. They even towed back their flagship back to The Netherlands as a trophy.
But when Lord Nelson fought the Spanish at Trafalgar, the Dutch held back Spanish re-inforcements in The Channel. And of course the English helped liberate Europe twice.
Now we battle it out, on the football field only.
I see the brits with the dutch like a big brother to a smaller brother, i can give them a dig but if you touch them then we will f you up 😂
Football field ?? Lmao. Grow up mate. Both countries look like a Ghanain team. Smh
Yes we did. We invaded, we conquered, and left prince Willem on the British throne.
But the narrator was wrong in calling us archnemeses. We've always been natural allies. It was only during the little ice age, when much of Northern Europe was starving, that we fought a succession of wars over what were basically fishing rights.
Formed by invasion, The Romans, Anglo Saxons who formed England (England = “Land of the Angles”), the Vikings & the Normans(French) taught us so well.
British Redcoats have served in every part of the globe from the South Atlantic to Russia and North/South America to Tibet/China.
To all British Redcoats past and present, God bless you all.
Eww, cringe. And shameful lmao
Ireland was not invaded by the English, the English were invited by the Irish tribes to keep the peace.
Makes you proud don’t it. 🇬🇧
The history of the entire world I guess reference was perfect :D
I think we have to define "Invade".
What can I say as a British born and bred bloke, we did quite alot around the world didn't we ?. It does make you wonder how the world could have looked like if the 65 countries that left the then empire had stayed, also would the empire have changed to become the commonwealth if the did leave to stand on their own. It can also be said for other empires that came and went over the years too.
I’m Welsh. We got invade too:/
We put up with the English cus they’re great to poke fun at. In fairness, a lot of Celtic peoples have anti English sentiment but it’s mainly in good humour.
Also forgotten on the show were the Falklands, Jersey, Guernsey…the list actually goes on.
Well you also invaded England with Henry Tudor. We are in effect two peoples but one nation.
Sheep sheep sheep shagger! 🤪
I don't know what I like more about your videos the learning or seeing your face. Lol.
We just like to go on holiday alot and make new friends
..and bring back a few momentos and souvenirs from our holidays like a Stick Of Rock...No Biggie:)
Video was great, and I love your nail color 😊
Proud Englishman and proud that we did what we did.
u like hitler also?
What about the USA invasion of Hawaii? Hawaii is not an official State of the USA as their people never gave up their sovereignty.
