If you play a game of Alternate History where you look at the values of a country and what they would do if they had the power of the British Empire or the American hegemony, pretty much every other country would have had worse outcomes for native peoples/ conquered/colony.

Malta was missed. In 1798 when young Napoléon was a Republican general, he was on he's way to invade Egypt, to block British trade from India. He stopped in Malta and conquered it. British invited the island in 1800 and got it "official" in 1814 as part of Treaty of Paris to end the Napoleonic Wars (for now). Malta was a strategic naval base, half way between Spain and the Middle East and it played a key role in both World Wars, later one got more attention. Modern Republic of Malta got her independence in 1964.

    • @MetalGearMalta
      @MetalGearMalta 4 месяца назад

The Maltese invited the British to come to their aid against Napoleon to free the island. They formally wrote to the queen and invited the armed forces over to Malta and made a treaty with the queen, and the Maltese accepted British forces help, but the Maltese argued that since they've formally invited the empire over, they had the right to severe that pact and part ways with the empire. Eventually the British spent 200 years in Malta regardless, and in the early 1960's then Malta prime minister first tried to negotiate with Britain to let Malta become part of it, but the Brits refused and from then, they pushed to gain independence and eventually succeeded in gaining freedom from the Brits in 1979.

A lot of my ancestors suffered under the British Empire but I hold no grudges against the modern British nation state, though that may be because I was born and raised here ;) some context for the invasions would always be welcome, however. For example I wasn't aware whatsoever that Britain didn't establish a presence in West Africa until it had to forcibly abolish the slave trade, as it was so profitable that the Warlords of that region didn't want it to stop. That was the casus belli anyway, but they still hadn't invaded before then, so.. All European Empires were competing with each other at that time. Had Britain not ruled over India, it would have been the French, or the Dutch, or the Portuguese, or the Mughals, or the Marathas, etc..
The days of Empire are over thankfully but at the same time the world is still a geopolitical chessboard, whether we like it or not

The Germans entered the chat in 1871 and by 1890 were actively trying to be the naval rival to Britain that France tried and failed to be. Arguably, by the 1910's, the Germans had largely managed to present a credible opponent to the Royal Navy, with the 2nd largest navy in the world, even bigger than the US Navy or Japanese Imperial Navy of the time (both then up-and-coming navies and powerful forces themselves) But the Royal Navy was still far larger than even the Kaiserliche Marine.

The English common law, so named because it was "common" to all the king's courts across England, originated in the practices of the courts of the English kings.
In English common law, which Australia and the usa is a part of, everyone (King, Queen, Lord, peasant, white, black, brown, yellow, pink, purple) absolutely everyone is equal by law.
-The British Empire later spread the English legal system to its colonies, many of which retain the common law system today. These common law systems are legal systems that give great weight to judicial precedent and to the style of reasoning inherited from the English legal system.
The term "common law," referring to the body of law made by the judiciary, is often distinguished from statutory law and regulations, which are laws adopted by the legislature and executive, respectively. In legal systems that follow the common law, judicial precedent stands in contrast to and on equal footing with statutes.
The other major legal system used by countries is civil law, which codifies its legal principles into legal codes and does not treat judicial opinions as binding.
    - Today, one-third of the world's population lives in common law jurisdictions or in mixed legal systems that combine the common law with the civil law, including, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Burma, Cameroon, Canada (both the federal system and all its provinces except Quebec), Cyprus, Dominica, Fiji, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Malaysia, Malta, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom (including its overseas territories such as Gibraltar), the United States (both the federal system and 49 of its 50 states), and Zimbabwe👏

The closest occurrence I can think of was during WW1 when a German battleship attacked a coastal town, sitting directly in their waters. But that’s more of a bombardment…
The United Kingdom has never been a victim like you’re implying, but I don’t think that means they’ve always been the aggressor, I also don’t understand the problem with the term “invading”, it hardly means conquest. WW2 Operation Barbarossa is still referred to as an invasion even when it failed. Napoleons invasion of Russia was still an invasion when it failed. In fact, this list could be much bigger if you change the terms to “conflict with”.

My point about the word 'invaded' was that Britain [sic] didn't invade many of their countries in the way that is implied by this video - or implied by the other videos and books of the same ilk. My point about "Britain , and especially England" was simply that they were invaded (often unsuccessfully) relentlessly throughout history, very often by their closest neighbours (including those within what is now the UK) and often by a combination of those neighbours. I was simply pointing out the very loose way that the word invaded was being used.

Errrmmm... It's worth looking into how Britain actually INVENTED Belgium rather than invading it... The history is complex but worth understanding. It wasn't that long ago and now the Belgians have their own unique culture (best beer in the world and mayonaise on chips). Which must be followed by: Oooops - if you look into the actual history you'll discover that the British NEVER invaded India - we simply BOUGHT it, region by region, form the pre-existing various local warlords. Yes, while they weren't looking we ended up running the whole place (and deploying the military more than once) but it's important to understand that we NEVER "invaded" India. Also remember that Pakistan and Bangladesh DIDN'T EXIST until AFTER India gained independance from the British. Again, the history is contencious but the genocide that followed Indian indepencance was a product of Indian only politics with no British involvement at all - we handed India back to the Indians and they immediately celebrated with what amounts to a civil war.

The British occupation of the Balkans is a myth, although British troops were present in Serbian wars they never occupied the country. It was occupied by UN troops which British forces were part of. Secondly, Bulgaria had never been under British occupation whatsoever. They tried with combined British/Greek forces and they were heavily defeated in the battle of Doiran (12000 British casualties against 2000 locals) which isn't even within the borders of the country now, or as shown on the map. So, some of the so-called "facts" in this video are simply not true.
However, Britain always kept very close trade relations with Turkey (which caused lots of problems in Europe), as the Turks were the ones to rule the region for almost a millennia.
Some of those "occupations" are tailored to fit the authors of the video narrative, like Azerbaijan for example, they weren't there for a year and they never invaded it, they were there invited by the Azerbaijani government to stop Turks but ended up bitten by the Russians a month later so another made up story. British were present only in Baku that's where the battle of Baku happened end of August 1918, and as the British arrived there at the end of Jun 1918 (they were stationed in Baghdad (Iraq) it can't be called a year (unless a year is made of 2 and a half months) and they never "invaded" the place, they were invited there. Same story with Turkmenistan, they were there for less than a year I think. As for Vietnam, officially there were no British troops present, only recently it became clear there were some but only so small number that hardly can be called a presence, plus Britain never claimed they were there in the first place. What they did is supply American forces with arms.
China had never been entirely occupied by Britain, as this video makes it look.
Not "the entire Canada" become British see the Treaty of Paris (1763). Plus the map shown was so wrong.
Some videos on RUclips have to be carefully fact-checked as they give lots of simply false facts and twisted information to serve god knows what purpose, or simply to catch viewers.

7:37 Hong Kong was supposed to be fully autonomous for 50 years following the 1997 handover to China. China broke that agreement in 2020 when they invaded so either that handover agreement is torn up and nullified making Hong Kong an independent sovereign country or they go back to being a British territory.

I don't acknowledge the argument that because England invaded Norway in 1810 and 1812, they also invaded Denmark.
Norway and Denmark was in an personal union at the time, but they were both independant countries. That's like saying if someone invades Australia, they invade England too, because they are in a personal union.

As far as the India territory is concerned, there where 3 places that the British did not invade: Goa, Damão and Diu the Portuguese where there much before the British. Portugal was the first to reach India, China (Macau peninsula was given to Portugal because they annihilated the piracy from China’s southern sea) Japan, the Portuguese where the first European nation to reach they shores. Last but not the least, the island of Timor off the coast of northern Australia coast.

I would question whether all of the invasions of France were carried out by the British. The early ones after 1066 were carried out by Norman French led invaders and conquerors of England? Also the Balkans in the 1990s were a NATO “invasion” rather than a British “invasion” - not saying the video is wring, just that History can be interpreted differently and usually is.
