In 1834 the order settled in Rome and became the Souvereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM). The order is quite unique, since it is kind of a souvereign state without a country. It has it's own embassies, international relations to 120 countries, passports, license plates and special observer status at the UN. It's main activities today is humanitarian aid.

In Asia, UK sent troops to Korea during the Korean War 1950-53 with over 60,000 troops with 1,100 KIA. I'm sure S. British History is so fascinating, a thousand years of being invaded/colonised/raided (Roman, Danes, Irish, Norwegians, Jutes, Angles, Saxons, Normans, etc), then a thousand years of doing the same to just about everybody. Not trying to justify or pardon it, just that one small piece of rain soaked land has played a massive role in shaping the modern world.
We can blame the Normans for kicking off a lot of the conquering. Until 1066 England was an insular, almost isolationist country with a Scandinavian culture and almost no relationship with the powers of continental Europe. Post Norman conquest and now there's a hyper-aggressive French speaking aristocracy in charge. They bleed England of all its wealth and manpower in order to fight endless, protracted wars against their (many) enemies in Europe. Even William the Conqueror spent more of his years fighting his rivals in France than he ever spent fighting England. It sets up a pattern of militarism that never ends.
It is interesting, and being an island the last real invasion (though not technically the last) was the Normans in 1066. As a consequence, very few wars fought on English territory, as a consequence of that it was the wealthiest country in Europe for centuries and it wasn't even close. In fact, that was why the Normans invaded. On top of that, it was very safe and peaceful. England's murder rate in the 12th century or thereabouts on was better than Italy's in the early twentieth century. And they emasculated their Monarchy and church really early, that is why they got the industrial revolution. At one point I have read that about 75% by value of Global Trade went through the Port of London. 3/4 of the entire world's trade through one port.

The French surrendered the island to the British on 28 October, which also effectivly started the British blockade. The French on Malta retreated to Valetta, kicked the civilians out of the city, and finaly surrendered in september 1800, if I remember correctly.
Pavel I., at this time de facto Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller (Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem), was not really having balls or not. The fact that the Knights Hospitaller lost 90% of their income sources - including Malta, their "HQ" - to Napoleons wars, was significantly more severe. And that he was never de jure ratified as Grand Master by the Pope. The order was broke, Alexander would've had no ressources to do anything.
In 1834 the order settled in Rome and became the Souvereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM). The order is quite unique, since it is kind of a souvereign state without a country. It has it's own embassies, international relations to 120 countries, passports, license plates and special observer status at the UN. It's main activities today is humanitarian aid.

Koreans do not look at Britain as "invaders" but nevertheless, if you are mentioning some other instances such as Iceland in this video which in comparison was very peaceful and cooperative from the host country, the sacrifice of British troops to defend S. Korea against communism is worthy of mentioning and remembering.

British History is so fascinating, a thousand years of being invaded/colonised/raided (Roman, Danes, Irish, Norwegians, Jutes, Angles, Saxons, Normans, etc), then a thousand years of doing the same to just about everybody.
Not trying to justify or pardon it, just that one small piece of rain soaked land has played a massive role in shaping the modern world.

It is interesting, and being an island the last real invasion (though not technically the last) was the Normans in 1066. As a consequence, very few wars fought on English territory, as a consequence of that it was the wealthiest country in Europe for centuries and it wasn't even close. In fact, that was why the Normans invaded. On top of that, it was very safe and peaceful. England's murder rate in the 12th century or thereabouts on was better than Italy's in the early twentieth century. And they emasculated their Monarchy and church really early, that is why they got the industrial revolution. At one point I have read that about 75% by value of Global Trade went through the Port of London. 3/4 of the entire world's trade through one port.
