its very hard to do that kind of infrastructure in portugal. the north sea is 20m deep on average, and the estuaries in the netherlands dont get much deeper than that. in portugal, the coast starts rigt at the depth 80m in the end of the tagus and 500 m just a few kilometers of the coast. this helps the upwelling and that's one reason why the portuguese beaches are extremely cold. in the canon of nazaré it can get to 2000 m even closer to the coast. even the duch cant polder this far... i mean... lets not give them ideas.....

If i had to guess, since i cant quite seem to fully understand your question, it is because portugal is divided into several methods of division, being the least defined NUTS I and the most NUTS III. In the NUTS I, there is only 3 portuguese divisions: Continental Portugal, RAA(Região Autonoma dos Açores, Autonomous Region Of the Azores, AKA Islands in the middle of the northern atlantic ocean, amazing place), and the RAM(Região Autónoma da Madeira, Autonomous Region of the Madeira Islands, AKA Islands next to the Spanish Canary islands and birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo). Since the Madeira Islands are a Huge part of the portuguese territory in what comes to a possible expansion, its clear the maps representing the Already-in-usage territory expansion would wish to detail the fact that portugal owns territory in the african continent, expanding their water borders by a huge landslide! Just a correction: when Portugal was ruled from Rio, Brazil wasn't a colony anymore, it was part of the Kingdom, so Portugal wasn't ruled from its colony. It was called the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil. I think it's impossible to be ruled from a colony since if the royal family settles there it automatically becomes part of the country.

I don't think most people would mind the extension of their EEG. Actually 2-3 decades ago they had found a large reserve of oil fields a few miles from the mainland coast. They held a referendum and the majority of people (like over 80% if I remember correctly), voted not to drill oil. The reason is that it would probably affect their coastline and tourism, a major part of Portugese economy. So yeah, they have a lot of resources in the sea but aren't using them to attain their countries beauty, and if you've ever visited Portugal it has a beautiful coast.
Yet the money that this EEG would assembly line in, would give Portugal the necessary funds to keep its prestine coastline prestine. Using the money revenue, and may even lead to another technology that environmentalists would love, liek clean coal, clean ocean gas. Could you imagine how many places around the world could benefit from something like this? Far reaching potential, that we would deny ourselves? Is just sad.

The Portuguese state would only receive +- 45 thousand euros/month for all occupied land areas and 575 thousand euros/month for maritime areas. and royalties (value paid per barrel) 0.1% to 5% per barrel in maritime explorations and between 3% to 8% in land explorations depending on the production volume. To make matters even worse, all oil and gas discovered would belong entirely to the concessionaire with no obligation to stay in the country.

As someone who's speak Portuguese, in 2:13 it is written "Portugal e Mar!" which strangely translated to "Portugal is the Sea!". The problem is "Portugal e Mar" actually translates to Portugal AND the Sea, to get the translation to "Portugal is the Sea" it should be like: "Portugal É Mar" or "Portugal É o Mar". This E and É makes an enormous difference meanings in Portuguese language. É: Means affirmation: Portugal É (o) mar - Portugal is the Sea (which would be correct). E: Add something to the sentence: Portugal e Mar - Portugal and the Sea. This mistake is not the end of the world, just an observation.

My country Ecuador is trying to do the same. Chinese ships have been patrolling and fishing just outside our Galápagos islands. So the government wants to extend our EEZ to cover the existing gap between the island's EZZ and the mainland, and to add more territorial waters here and there. I wonder how the transition into "modern times" of the French colonial empire compare to Portugal's. I have the impression Britain just gave up on it, knowing it was a lost battle, so it created the Common Wealth instead. Portugal was arguably on the other side of it: inflexible, lost it all. But France seems to have maintenained a lot of its old empire worldwide, using a similar strategy to the Portuguese: making those territories (somewhat) integral to the "European France".
Exactly. I'm from Ireland which used to be a part of the British empire. All that remains here is Northern Ireland which will likely unify with the rest of Ireland in the near future. Britain, more specifically England, has rendered itself to being a small, nationalistic, small-minded and increasingly isolated nation. However they were smart on they way they planned it, by giving NATO equipment to Portugal and allying with the regime because it was anti communist and funding the rebels at the same time they made sure that if Portugal won they might have access to the oil and the region doesn't turn communist, if the rebels won US would have the oil and the region might turn communist. Portugal is a part of NATO, and Portugal considered Goa as their own territory(not a colony), so when India invaded Goa, it was literally invading Portugal, and thus that was an attack on all of the nato countries. Portugal and Nato actually issued warnings to India but India invaded anyways making India probably the only country ever actually waging war against nato and defeating them.
Actually that is false. Indeed India was warned to not do it, but Portugal never got assistance and was told from the start that NATO would not stand on it's side. By that time Portugal was already on the verge of the so called "Proudly Alone" policy. As the video itself showed, the USA (a NATO member), helped the rebels in every colony, effectively proving you wrong. India never waged or won a war against NATO, it won against Portugal which was "Proudly Alone".
The NATO charter specified what territory is covered and it excludes non-Euro and North American parts of any NATO members (this is roughly, but not the exact deal). This is why the UK was pretty much on its own in the Falklands War.

Portugal does not have a continental shelf and thus will simply state that the whole north atlantic sea bed is part of it's "continental shelf". That is something that the UK or Ireland, the USA or Canada, which have large continetal shelves, will never be able to do. That is also why, few countries actually resquested to expand their territories, because few can find a reason to do so. Portugal's very proposal is in fact open. The project "Mar Portugal" leaves the door open for further expansions under the permission that there is a continum between the land being claim and the land beyond those bounderies. In other words, Portugal will eventuallu claim even more and did not do it yet simply because there are scientific studies that need to be presented in the UN that are still undone.

What Bloat123 said. Citizens from French overseas departments have full French citizenship, just like people from Madeira or the Azores have full Portuguese citizenship too. They have the same rights as any other French citizen born in metropolitan France, they vote in French elections and they are represented in the parliament. Our king Sebastian dying in battle without an heir in 1578 led Portugal to fall under the rule of the Spanish crown, which was at war with England (our oldest ally) and later the Netherlands. EEZ is not a "territory". It's just a region of the sea where a country has exclusive economic control (meaning other countries could not plant, mine, or harvest resources from that area without consent). Also uninhabited islands that cannot support human habitation or shoals with non-existent economic activities could not project an exclusive economic zone.
That's why you pay a handful of people to live in houses outside of a tiny military installment on every rock you claim, because now it's a populated island with economic activity.
Madeira and the Azores archipelagos make up a population of half a million and they are autonomous regions. They have their own govermnent that might be why they have an EEZ.
Well, depending on your idea of what a territory is, an area under direct control not allowing others to step in is territory none the less. For as long as a few hundred people live on an island and produce some economic activity, the island can have an EEZ, but as you said, if no one lives there, then there is no economic production, thus, no EEZ. I believe a minimum population must be set internationally so that an island can be considered to have EEZ. Greece and Turkey go back and forth with this. Because Greece extended the EEZ to 12 nautical miles within the Ionian sea, nor Italy, nor Albania nor Turkey can enter without asking for access first. In practice, this is what territory means.

As far as UNCLOS is concern, EEZ is well defined among it's signatories, and EEZ is not the same as a Sovereign territory. Countries cannot arbitrarily redefine EEZ and interchange it with "sovereign" territory whenever they think it is convenient. That's not how this thing works Unlike Soverign territories, EEZ doesn't invalidate freedom of navigation. So an opposing country could park their entire Navy on your EEZ and as long as they are not harvesting any "resources" they are free to be there. Also EEZ is only binding with UNCLOS signatory countries. US for example doesn't recognize other any other countries EEZ as they are not signatories of UNCLOS. (though US had establish their own exclusive economic zone for themselves). And as far as they are concern, EEZ are part of international waters and nobody owns any of it. Another problem is that UNCLOS has no enforcing ability whatsoever EEZ is a toothless law, unless you are like China or US or some country with potent naval force.

The older capital is reffered to as Old Goa. Basically that is the most "touristy"part of Goa with the most churches and the governor's palace. That itself was a replacement of the pre Muslim city of Gomantaka.

The thing is, when Portugal "lost" Brazil, Brazil wasn't as valuable as it had been. That's because cheap sugar could now be produced in Europe from the newly bred sugar beet, making cane sugar much less profitable, which had been one Brazil's most important export products.
Brazil was most valuable during the Gold Rush, and as a place to absorb the undesirables in Portugal's population (like Australia was for the UK in the 1800s).

Just a small correction: We, the Portuguese, did in fact conquer Ceuta, but once we did it the moors shifted all commercial trade routes going through the city, so eventually, it had no value for us. After a while we abandoned it and then the Spanish settled in, and they stayed there until the present. In fact, Ceuta belongs to them and not to Morocco.

During the Second World War Salazar´s Portugal allowed the Allies to use the air base in the Azores to re-fuel new airplanes being ferried from North America to Britain. This cut the time to ferry these aircraft roughly in half. Salazar was a tyrant, but he did help the Allies defeat Nazi Germany and Mussolini´s Italy. (That said, he was a certifiable oddball.)
Portugal also has plans to become Europe's space port, having more sea aligns with this goal. Portugal is geographically well placed for a space port, but it needs the support of the ESA obviously.

@L C ESA has Kourou, not France. France owns the land. The rocket parts are made in France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Switzerland and others. Also, Santa Maria island is much closer to mainland Europe, and its location means it can launch spacecraft to a wide variety of orbital trajectories. Also, ESA has a tracking station there. Without it, launches from Kourou can't be tracked for much of the Atlantic ocean path they usually take.

Goa was indeed a Portuguese province and there are a lot of wealthy and important Indians and Indian families in Portugal because of this, Goa continues to be the Indian state with the highest GDP per capita and has a very big portuguese heritage (it was Portuguese for 400 years). The Portuguese prime minister is Indian and Portugal's biggest spice brand was also created by a man from Goa. Secondly the only reason the US and USSR supported the rebels in Africa was because of Angola's natural resources (oil, diamonds etc) it had nothing to do with the liberation of the colonies and it was only intended on opening up a market that Portugal had kept a tight grip on for a long time. Proof of this was the bloody civil war that lasted 30 years after the Portuguese left with various militias supported by either the US or USSR. Otherwise great and accurate video which is rare when it comes to Portugal
Thank you for referring the colonial war. Too many people outise of Portugal don't know about this. My father was one those lost generation that was sent for a meaningless war. He was shot in the head and miraculously survived a few days in the morgue without water, food or treatment. He was operated and able to live a proper life, but worse than his wounds were his nightmares of surviving in the jungle and the people he had to kill!

My father didn't want to fight in Angola and evaded the military (desertou) but as he was going often to eat at the camp by jumping the wall he was caught one year later and put in prison in Angola for 5 years till the independence. To be fair, they were winning the wars everywhere in Africa except Guinea-Bissau. The decision to leave was just that, a decision; they weren't forced out by circumstances. Also the US still gave them support despite rhetoric.
EEZ's are not sovereign territory. They're international waters that a state has exclusive economic rights over (that's what EEZ means - exclusive economic zone). Sovereignty ends 12 nautical miles from habitable land. The 200nm EEZ radius does not count as 'territory '
It's still considered by the UN as a form of territorry. And tbh, a much more important one, since there isn't any real distiction between sovereign waters and EEZs other than the ability to bar passage, which is irrelevant given that a navy powerful enough to exploit these waters can probably also defend them.
Finally a reasonable comment. The video is pretty misleading in treating EEZ as part of the countries territory. The EEZ is literally region beyond the territorial waters where the country has some rights but not full sovereignty.

"Portugal e Mar" actually translates as "Portugal and Sea". For "Portugal is the Sea", the right answer in Portuguese is "Portugal é o Mar". As the program is actually called "Portugal é Mar", the best translation would be "Portugal is Sea".

its very hard to do that kind of infrastructure in portugal. the north sea is 20m deep on average, and the estuaries in the netherlands dont get much deeper than that. in portugal, the coast starts rigt at the depth 80m in the end of the tagus and 500 m just a few kilometers of the coast.
this helps the upwelling and that's one reason why the portuguese beaches are extremely cold.
in the canon of nazaré it can get to 2000 m even closer to the coast. even the duch cant polder this far... i mean... lets not give them ideas.....

If i had to guess, since i cant quite seem to fully understand your question, it is because portugal is divided into several methods of division, being the least defined NUTS I and the most NUTS III. In the NUTS I, there is only 3 portuguese divisions: Continental Portugal, RAA(Região Autonoma dos Açores, Autonomous Region Of the Azores, AKA Islands in the middle of the northern atlantic ocean, amazing place), and the RAM(Região Autónoma da Madeira, Autonomous Region of the Madeira Islands, AKA Islands next to the Spanish Canary islands and birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo). Since the Madeira Islands are a Huge part of the portuguese territory in what comes to a possible expansion, its clear the maps representing the Already-in-usage territory expansion would wish to detail the fact that portugal owns territory in the african continent, expanding their water borders by a huge landslide!

Back when I was a student at university in the early 1980s, I took a legend and myth history course. One of the lectures involved her discussing Portugal's roll in the great age of discovery. The following class, the professor had mentioned that after the previous lecture, many students had come up to her to discuss what they had just learned. They were all astounded at the magnitude of Portugal's role in discovering the new world. As a result, the professor dedicated that day's lecture strictly to the influence of Portugal during those centuries of great exploration. Being of Portuguese background, I felt so proud that these students were finally understanding just how important role Portugal played in the centuries coming out of medieval Europe. Yes, Portugal kick started one of the most important periods in world history. Portugal is the sea.

Actually 2-3 decades ago they had found a large reserve of oil fields a few miles from the mainland coast. They held a referendum and the majority of people (like over 80% if I remember correctly), voted not to drill oil. The reason is that it would probably affect their coastline and tourism, a major part of Portugese economy. So yeah, they have a lot of resources in the sea but aren't using them to attain their countries beauty, and if you've ever visited Portugal it has a beautiful coast.
Yet the money that this EEG would assembly line in, would give Portugal the necessary funds to keep its prestine coastline prestine. Using the money revenue, and may even lead to another technology that environmentalists would love, liek clean coal, clean ocean gas. Could you imagine how many places around the world could benefit from something like this? Far reaching potential, that we would deny ourselves? Is just sad.

Both my grandparents fought in ultramar war, One in Angola and Moçambique, the other one in Guiné. The two are still Alive and the things they tell me are about the war times are so interesting and some sad like my grandpa carrying a dead friend for kms while wonded by a frag grenade, or running from crocodilos and what surprised me the most was that they didn't want to fight, they were all friends but the governments ideals are always like this. A lot of the Middle ages society in Portugal was born in the old overseas territories, my mother was born in Luanda, Angola In the Middle of the fight with shots bursting through the hospital. My uncle in Maputo, Moçambique and the majority of my friends parents were born there also. Portugal is for us the best country because of all the history that is hidden in this little piece of land 🇵🇹

Portugal didn't actually have to give up Macau. The 1887 Treaty of Peking gave Portugal the perpetual right to administer Macau, but was considered "Chinese land".
It was to establish good relationships with China they gave it up. It was a smart move.

As someone who's speak Portuguese, in 2:13 it is written "Portugal e Mar!" which strangely translated to "Portugal is the Sea!". The problem is "Portugal e Mar" actually translates to Portugal AND the Sea, to get the translation to "Portugal is the Sea" it should be like: "Portugal É Mar" or "Portugal É o Mar".
This E and É makes an enormous difference meanings in Portuguese language.
É: Means affirmation: Portugal É (o) mar - Portugal is the Sea (which would be correct).
E: Add something to the sentence: Portugal e Mar - Portugal and the Sea.
This mistake is not the end of the world, just an observation.

I wonder how the transition into "modern times" of the French colonial empire compare to Portugal's. I have the impression Britain just gave up on it, knowing it was a lost battle, so it created the Common Wealth instead. Portugal was arguably on the other side of it: inflexible, lost it all. But France seems to have maintenained a lot of its old empire worldwide, using a similar strategy to the Portuguese: making those territories (somewhat) integral to the "European France".
Exactly. I'm from Ireland which used to be a part of the British empire. All that remains here is Northern Ireland which will likely unify with the rest of Ireland in the near future. Britain, more specifically England, has rendered itself to being a small, nationalistic, small-minded and increasingly isolated nation. It's quite embarrassing and sad to see how much they've fucked themselves up with Brexit. Very few countries want to trade with them as they're seen as unstable and untrustworthy. That's how many former colonial powers end up. One needs only to look at Russia...

So I wouldn't say that they were smart on what they were fighting for. However they were smart on they way they planned it, by giving NATO equipment to Portugal and allying with the regime because it was anti communist and funding the rebels at the same time they made sure that if Portugal won they might have access to the oil and the region doesn't turn communist, if the rebels won US would have the oil and the region might turn communist. Notice that I said "they were smart on the way they planned" because what really happen was just dumb, US decided to give the rebels an advantage and prohibited the use of NATO equipment in africa but the rebels still lost the fight, they would however win independence because of a coup, but that made the region become communist and the oil was nationalised.

Actually that is false. Indeed India was warned to not do it, but Portugal never got assistance and was told from the start that NATO would not stand on it's side. By that time Portugal was already on the verge of the so called "Proudly Alone" policy. As the video itself showed, the USA (a NATO member), helped the rebels in every colony, effectively proving you wrong. India never waged or won a war against NATO, it won against Portugal which was "Proudly Alone".
The NATO charter specified what territory is covered and it excludes non-Euro and North American parts of any NATO members (this is roughly, but not the exact deal). This is why the UK was pretty much on its own in the Falklands War.

That is also why, few countries actually resquested to expand their territories, because few can find a reason to do so. Portugal's very proposal is in fact open. The project "Mar Portugal" leaves the door open for further expansions under the permission that there is a continum between the land being claim and the land beyond those bounderies. In other words, Portugal will eventuallu claim even more and did not do it yet simply because there are scientific studies that need to be presented in the UN that are still undone.

Correction: Portuguese overseas territories had been already severely eroded way before the 1755 earthquake destroyed Lisbon. Our king Sebastian dying in battle without an heir in 1578 led Portugal to fall under the rule of the Spanish crown, which was at war with England (our oldest ally) and later the Netherlands. Which effectively opened all those territories to attack and invasion.
It's the most important loss actually. Asian colonies were by far the most profitable. Brazil just allowed Portugal to decline slowly.

It's just a region of the sea where a country has exclusive economic control (meaning other countries could not plant, mine, or harvest resources from that area without consent).
Also uninhabited islands that cannot support human habitation or shoals with non-existent economic activities could not project an exclusive economic zone.

For as long as a few hundred people live on an island and produce some economic activity, the island can have an EEZ, but as you said, if no one lives there, then there is no economic production, thus, no EEZ. I believe a minimum population must be set internationally so that an island can be considered to have EEZ. Greece and Turkey go back and forth with this. Because Greece extended the EEZ to 12 nautical miles within the Ionian sea, nor Italy, nor Albania nor Turkey can enter without asking for access first. In practice, this is what territory means.

As far as UNCLOS is concern, EEZ is well defined among it's signatories, and EEZ is not the same as a Sovereign territory.
Countries cannot arbitrarily redefine EEZ and interchange it with "sovereign" territory whenever they think it is convenient.
That's not how this thing works
Unlike Soverign territories, EEZ doesn't invalidate freedom of navigation.
So an opposing country could park their entire Navy on your EEZ and as long as they are not harvesting any "resources" they are free to be there.
Also EEZ is only binding with UNCLOS signatory countries.
US for example doesn't recognize other any other countries EEZ as they are not signatories of UNCLOS. (though US had establish their own exclusive economic zone for themselves).
And as far as they are concern, EEZ are part of international waters and nobody owns any of it.
Another problem is that UNCLOS has no enforcing ability whatsoever
EEZ is a toothless law, unless you are like China or US or some country with potent naval force.

That itself was a replacement of the pre Muslim city of Gomantaka.

The thing is, when Portugal "lost" Brazil, Brazil wasn't as valuable as it had been. That's because cheap sugar could now be produced in Europe from the newly bred sugar beet, making cane sugar much less profitable, which had been one Brazil's most important export products.
Brazil was most valuable during the Gold Rush, and as a place to absorb the undesirables in Portugal's population (like Australia was for the UK in the 1800s).

Just a small correction: We, the Portuguese, did in fact conquer Ceuta, but once we did it the moors shifted all commercial trade routes going through the city, so eventually, it had no value for us. After a while we abandoned it and then the Spanish settled in, and they stayed there until the present. In fact, Ceuta belongs to them and not to Morocco.
Ok… not exactly but close. If I remember well, Ceuta was given to the Brits when Catarina married the king of England. That along with the city of Bombay (current Mumbay). Not sure what happened latter to Ceuta and how it got under Spanish rule.

During the Second World War Salazar´s Portugal allowed the Allies to use the air base in the Azores to re-fuel new airplanes being ferried from North America to Britain. This cut the time to ferry these aircraft roughly in half. Salazar was a tyrant, but he did help the Allies defeat Nazi Germany and Mussolini´s Italy. (That said, he was a certifiable oddball.)
Portugal also has plans to become Europe's space port, having more sea aligns with this goal. Portugal is geographically well placed for a space port, but it needs the support of the ESA obviously.

Also, Santa Maria island is much closer to mainland Europe, and its location means it can launch spacecraft to a wide variety of orbital trajectories. Also, ESA has a tracking station there. Without it, launches from Kourou can't be tracked for much of the Atlantic ocean path they usually take.

Goa was indeed a Portuguese province and there are a lot of wealthy and important Indians and Indian families in Portugal because of this, Goa continues to be the Indian state with the highest GDP per capita and has a very big portuguese heritage (it was Portuguese for 400 years). The Portuguese prime minister is Indian and Portugal's biggest spice brand was also created by a man from Goa. Secondly the only reason the US and USSR supported the rebels in Africa was because of Angola's natural resources (oil, diamonds etc) it had nothing to do with the liberation of the colonies and it was only intended on opening up a market that Portugal had kept a tight grip on for a long time. Proof of this was the bloody civil war that lasted 30 years after the Portuguese left with various militias supported by either the US or USSR.

Thank you for referring the colonial war. Too many people outise of Portugal don't know about this. My father was one those lost generation that was sent for a meaningless war. He was shot in the head and miraculously survived a few days in the morgue without water, food or treatment. He was operated and able to live a proper life, but worse than his wounds were his nightmares of surviving in the jungle and the people he had to kill!
My dad was caught on the other side as a kid. My family came to Portugal in the last plane the Portuguese government provided for "returnados" from Angola. No one trully won that war
My grandad was saved by his friend that sacrificed himself by jumping to a grenade to protect him while they were moving around in the field i think it was in Mozambique + my uncle grandad ( i think this is how you say it but its tio avô that i meant) was in jail in India for beeing a portuguese soldier fighting for the colonies fortunately he got out and both of them are doing well :D

My father didn't want to fight in Angola and evaded the military (desertou) but as he was going often to eat at the camp by jumping the wall he was caught one year later and put in prison in Angola for 5 years till the independence. Still had time during that year to make babies with a woman from MPLA who wanted him to fight with her but he declined too and abandoned them.

EEZ's are not sovereign territory. They're international waters that a state has exclusive economic rights over (that's what EEZ means - exclusive economic zone).
Sovereignty ends 12 nautical miles from habitable land. The 200nm EEZ radius does not count as 'territory '
It's still considered by the UN as a form of territorry. And tbh, a much more important one, since there isn't any real distiction between sovereign waters and EEZs other than the ability to bar passage, which is irrelevant given that a navy powerful enough to exploit these waters can probably also defend them.
Finally a reasonable comment. The video is pretty misleading in treating EEZ as part of the countries territory. The EEZ is literally region beyond the territorial waters where the country has some rights but not full sovereignty.
