During a business trip to India, a few years back, my host asked, over a cup of tea, "Can you explain to me just how a small island in Europe managed to control the whole of India and much of the world?" I sipped at my tea, and replied, "Perhaps it is something linked to very well disciplined and competent soldiers, good guns, good cannons and lots of controlling bureaucracy?" He replied, "Don't forget lots of very intelligent people". I replied, nowadays these intelligent people are much controlled by money, whereas many people in India seek to be controlled first by their heart.". He agreed and we calmly continued drinking our tea.

Child marriages and abuse through the African continent. Never mentioned by BLM. Funny isn't it? Let's blame the white man again.

I was always amazed that such a small country could achieve so much and perhaps size has nothing to do with it because wood was available to build ships which was a basic tool in building an Empire . The army was never large as Britain often fought larger numbers in battles. So perhaps it was indeed quite an achievment and since the invention of nuclear weapons i believe the British Empire will be the very last of Empires in the traditional sense.

Plus many "invasions" were as a part of an allied force that wasn't just England (like all the Napoleonic campaigns), or as a result of an attack or threat to England, go back far enough and the crusades were called for by the Pope.

When you use the word invasion it conjures up images of armies marauding and brutally conquering countries.
But in reality mostly in more modern times a lot of it is done via commerce where business interests are set up in other countries and bureaucracies get a foothold on power.
Modern comparison? China right now. It's not sending armies to invade, it's quietly using commerce to achieve political influence over other countries.

The use of the word, 'invasion', is misplaced when talking about some of these places. They were occupied in order to prevent other forces from taking over, e.g. communists post-second world war, also, some were, 're-occupied', i.e. other colonial powers were fought against due to their strategic positions during wars. Britain was largely interested in trade rather than conquest. They took on more of an administrative role with a lot of the countries they occupied, but largely took on a defensive role rather than offensive ones. From a political perspective, a lot of things changed after the second world war, and as such, Britain couldn't really afford to keep up the maintenance of the administration of some of these countries. That a lot of countries wanted their independence in the years to follow actually did us a favour.

Felipe is correct. Britain didn't just invade these countries, but they spread the language and the ideas of democracy, rule by the law, human rights and the industrial revolution.
Prior to the industrial revolution, Britain was like many other nations that were preyed upon by other richer nations. The big difference was that Britain was an island. Islands are difficult to conquer and the last time that someone succeeded was in 1066 with William the Conqueror. It was due to the fact that British trade ships were being captured by piratical nations (something which we did to the Spanish ironically) which caused the British to create a national bank (Bank of England) a Royal Navy and that led to the Industrial Revolution to create the Navy.
Suddenly, Britain had the ability to defend their trade and their Navy ruled the sea. This allowed us to send troops abroad to conquer nations. The British Empire was mostly beneficent in that many of these states previously had endured constant wars. It was also blind to the needs of the natives. They ignored the rising grievances of locals (such as the Americans) and this led to revolutions. It's believed that during the Second World War, Roosevelt managed to extract a promise from Churchill that Britain would free all her colonies in return for lend/lease support. America's biggest enemy prior to WW1 and WW2 was the British Empire and all War planning was based on a war with Britain. Indeed, the first war that a newly independent America declared was on none other than Britain.
Although we conquered all these nations, we actually created the means for understanding between nations through a common language and the idea of a representative parliamentary democracy as well as a common law and human rights - from Magna Carta - and the US Declaration of Independence that came out of it. So the British Empire might have been created by a lot of conflict and bad deeds, but it then went on to create something magnificent which today allows nations to live in peace with other states without having to go to war.

They weren't technically French, as Normandy was a duchy and the various dukes were vassals of the successive French kings - which is why William of Normandy was so keen to conquer England and claim it as his own. The Normans were of Viking heritage originally (though they integrated with locals to some extent over the centuries). The French king at the time of their settlement had become so fed up with their constant harassing of French villages, their pillaging and murdering etc, that he annexed the top corner of France and gave it to them to keep the peace. He recognised that it would have the added advantage of protecting France from invaders in the north.

One can still experience the smaller version of France even today in the south west around Toulouse. Locals may, on setting out on a journey to Paris, say they're travelling to France.

I think they also forgot the Falkland’s..and Malta 1940’s, Albania 1939 to attack occupying Italian ports (unsure about this one being an invasion) and the Korean war 1950, where over 81,000 British soldiers were sent their with the Americans. We also invaded morocco and Algeria in 1943, so the true number should actually be around 125/26 not 117. And for people who wonder how we achieved a lot, being so small… as-well as our experience of war and advances in technology, much credit goes to John Harrison a self taught watch maker who invented the marine chronometer, solving the problem of calculating longitude while at sea. You have to remember that Britain was invaded by the Romans - the Vikings - the Normans - the Saxons - The Dutch - the French and the Celts . Britain has not been invaded since 1066 helped mainly by being the leaders in armaments and Naval power . Along with our ability to invent --- Radar - jet engine - although not the first to invent maned flight we were the first to develope it . and many more including VTO aircraft .

It was rather the opposite, it is England that has been invaded by the French since 1066 if we play on anachronisms. During this Feudal era, the Kings and Lords of England had territories in France precisely because they were originally from there. And if we take into account the treaties and the marriages, it gave this map at 2:10

Our vast and extremely powerful Royal Navy went along way towards telling you why we were able to do all that. And also the brain power we had over here we were ahead of our time. And the line Britannia rules the waves wasn't written for nothing. :D
No one will ever dominate like that again. Nukes and things put a different spin on things. EVERYONE has even more to lose now than in past. EVERYONE has more to lose. If nukes start going off!!
And of course many of those invasions were just to help out of course and for the own good of Countries. :D

A size comparison of the Roman and British Empires, I'd say the Roman Empire at its height was a bit smaller than the size of the USA today, if you take out the Med and go by land area then about the size of the USA minus Alaska, California and Hawaii. In the British Empire, Canada alone was larger than either.
The British Empire was a quarter of the world's land area so 25%, the USA today is about 6%, Roman Empire was around 3.7%/4%, so also a bit smaller then Australia at 5%.
So the British Empire was about 6 or 7 times larger than the Roman Empire 😁
The Spanish empire was 13% of the world's land, the French had about 8 or 9%

Our war DNA is still here. It's lying dorment waiting for the next time it's needed. I remember in 1982 when we were happily having not too bad a day and Argentina declared war. Suddenly, our war DNA was activated and off we went persuading Argentina to leave the Falkland Islands.
Take a look at reviewing the Falklands war. Britain was told it wouldn't be possible to recapture them because of the distance but of course, we don't like people taking things without permission.
