4:18 You're Correct - *Northern Ireland* has the unofficial *Ulster Banner.*
4:57 Scotland has a tiny population because it's mainly hills and lakes. Every few years I compare the stagnant population of *Scotland* with the slowly increasing population of historic county of *Yorkshire* (which is made up of 4 English counties). It's too much hard work trying to work out the entire population of *Yorkshire,* as there's a few populations of the 4 ceremonial counties (North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and the East Riding of Yorkshire) listed by themselves for some reason. However the last time I checked, both *Scotland* and *Yorkshire* had around 5.5M each, so it's very likely that *Yorkshire* now has a bigger population.
7:25 A 2 mile road by me had 50+ pubs around 50 years ago. It then had around 30+ pubs when I was a kid. And today 20+ years later it has just 6 (3 of which could be argued aren't on the road, as 1 of them is a WMC around the back of a pub, and 2 of them are the bookmarks at each end). That's just a small example to show the scale of the pub industry declining, not to mention bars and nightclubs.
8:13 Irish Gaelic is pronounced Gay-Lick. Scottish Gaelic is pronounced Gal-Lick.
11:45 Incorrect - You can drink alcohol at home at any age. You can drink alcohol in licensed premises when you're 16yo if you're with an adult. And finally you can buy your own drinks when you're 18yo and have ID to prove it.
12:43 *Indian Curry, Chinese Curry* or *Thai Curry* have been constantly winning UK's best *Meal/Dish/Food* etc polls for 20+ years. It's usually *Indian* and if it's not, then it's *Thai* instead. *Spaghetti Bolognese* occasionally wins food polls too. *Chicken Masala* is what the award-winning restauranteurs from my city aka the record *Curry Capital of Britain* call *Chicken Tikka Masala.* Those restauranteurs have *Chicken Masala* which looks like the picture, or *Chicken Tikka* which is red coloured chicken pieces on a stick. There's no such thing as *Chicken Tikka Masala* in my city, despite what the majority of the UK's population call it.
20:44 *Eastenders* used to be the most popular in the 80s, and some of the 90s. *Coronation Street* used to be the most popular in the 90s and 00s. However *Emmerdale* is easily the most popular of the 10s and 20s as shown by it's countless *Best Soap* award wins over the last decade, and getting almost double the amount of viewers that *Eastenders* gets on average.
21:15 *Only Fools and Horses* is popular. However the majority of comedy suggestions on RUclips, are not of popular shows. The majority of the most-watched comedy TV shows get ignored by the internet, mainly *ITV sitcoms* like *Benidorm.*
22:58 Those numbers are much smaller than they should be. There's at least 300-500 Saturday and Sunday league clubs in my city alone, nevermind the 10-15 amateur and semi-professional clubs which all have actual stadiums with at least 1 stand, along with the professional clubs.
23:43 *St Davids* is the *smallest city in the UK by population.* However the *smallest city in the UK by area* is the 1 square mile *City of London* which is also a *county,* and the *3rd smallest city in the UK by population.*
28:11 Incorrect. *Birmingham* is the *biggest city in the UK by population,* as *Greater London* aka *London* is not a *city.* *Greater London* is a *county* and *region* which contains 2 cities in the previously mentioned *City of London,* and the 8 square mile *City of Westminster.*

As a Brit I feel it’s important to let you know, what here is SO different to heat across the pond! We’re just not built for it, our infrastructure is built to retain heat, we don’t have AC, our roads were literally melting this summer, we had about a week where it was 40 degrees Celsius, and it might have been the worst week of my life. I actually saw a lot of apology videos from Americans that now live in the UK on TikTok, because they felt first hand what it’s like when it gets hot here 😂

Presume someone's mentioned it in the comments but re. Churchill, he wasn't actually there that long. He took over in 1940 and just after WW2 ended in Europe in 1945 he was voted out in favour of the Labour leader Clement Attlee. Pretty much everyone, not least Clement Attlee, was stunned at this, given Churchill had just led us through the war. Like, the US was still fighting Japan at this point so people really wanted to move on from the war in Britain. Attlee served one term and then Churchill was voted in again a few years later. As a PM in peacetime he wasn't particularly great, but as a wartime leader, nobody better.

The UK drinking law is a bit more technical than just over 18's
16-17 you can have a drink at a restaurant if it is served with your meal and an adult (over 18) is present
Due to the wording used, it is legal to drink in a private residence from the age of 5

    • @memkiii
      @memkiii Год назад

It is still illegal to buy the drink regardless afaik. An adult still has to do that. Not that the law was really adhered to in the past. In the 70's, I (an 11 year old) was regularly sent to an off-licence or a pub to buy beer for my dad, and it was not uncommon to see parents in pubs giving their kids a shandy, and a packet of crisps while they had a beer. Much the same for cigarettes back then, and any excuse for a large bottle of cider.... I distinctly remember having my 18th birthday bash in a pub that I had been drinking in for a couple of years, and the landlord didn't bat an eyelid.

I grew up in Canterbury. Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond books, had a relative who lived in one of the villages just outside the town, so things like the number of the bus to London would be familiar to him. He was also acquainted with a gentleman who had been a racing driver in the 1920s. His racing car was nicknamed Chitty Bang Bang because of the noises the engine made. Fleming used it as the basis for a children's story he wrote, which he called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. You may know the movie based on the story.

You are wrong. In this context, Jack historically referred to a small flag in the RN (in which I served from 1966 to 1978). Jack is
never used, and never has been, as an alternative term for a spar or staff, or "post" as you put it.
The union flag is much smaller than the white ensign (hence union jack) and is flown from the jackstaff (so called because it is the staff on which the Union Jack is hoisted) at the bow of a RN ship when at sea.
Of course "Jack" is also a casual general term for a RN sailor, especially in humorous dits. Hence shipborne helicopters be
ing referred to as Jack's taxis.

July 1808 was the second hottest July on record, at the time with an extreme notable heatwave from the 12th to 15 July, peaking on the 13th and 14th. Temperatures above 36 °C (97 °F) were recorded in many areas on the 13th and 14th, with London reaching 38 °C (100 °F)[1] on the 13th, with a possible reading of 41 °C (105 °F). just think we have an extra 50 million people plus since 1800 so if it was built up how it is now back then you for sure see much higher temps. these day's they at airports, concrete jungle. one good example was Gatwick on the so called hottest day, they have two sites one south of airport near town and one north west of the airport, wind direction coming from the south before airport 36c after airport 39c. or you look at city temps at night compared to the countryside sounding. these temps are pretty normal we get them every now again through history, difference these days we much more built up what can only up the temps. The first Census in 1801 revealed that the population of Great Britain was 10.5 million. The current population of the United Kingdom is 68,742,691 as of Tuesday, November 29, 2022

Nope, Northern Ireland has the Northern Ireland flag which can not be flown from public buildings to keep the Irish happy, the Ulster banner is different, NI and Ulster are not the same thing.

@@georgebarnes8163 What are talking about. There's no such thing as a *Northern Ireland Flag.* The *Ulster Banner* is the closest there is to an official flag. The *St Patricks Saltire* represents *Ireland* as a whole. However as the *Republic of Ireland* is now a separate country with its own flag, the *St Patricks Saltire* now indirectly represents *Northern Ireland* on the *Union Jack.*

@@danielgardecki1046 There most certainly is a Northern Ireland flag which is not the Ulster flag , there is no such country as the Republic of Ireland, it is simply called Ireland nor does St Patricks cross represent NI on the Union flag, it was not removed from the Union Flag because Churchill was so stubborn and had a massive dislike for De Valera
