- John Conteh travels to Belgrade to try and wrest the WBC title that was stripped from him from around the waist of former World amateur champion and Olympic Gold medalist Parlov.
A fairly scrappy but intriguing styles clash between the fading boxer puncher Conteh and the awkward southpaw Parlov, Conteh makes up for his legs leaving him and his damaged hands by desperately trying to punch out a decision against the home country favourite. Even with a taller southpaw foe, Conteh's use of the head does not go unnoticed by the referee.

Parlov was a stiff and the Miguel Angel Cuello fight was fixed. Marvin Johnson kicked his ass and so would Matthew Saad Muhammad and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad have kicked his stiff ass also.

Malo je takvih danas,velik čovjek i pravi sportista.Pošten i fer do protivnika,to me je uvijek fasciniralo kod Mate.Nadam se,da če i današnja genercija mladih boksera ponešto naučiti od njega,kako bi se trebalo ponašati u ringu i poštovati protivnika.Da si dobar bokser treba ti puno inteligencije,bez toga si samo obična vreča za udaranje,zato ne može biti svako prvak,ko naš Mate.Počivaj u miru,još si u našim srcima.

Interesting comments here. Parlov throw far more clean shots, plus Conteh got several warnings. Deserved victory. However, a very good fight.

Honestly...very close fight..i was reporter for biggest Yugoslav daily newspaper Vecernje Novosti "..but also with Angelo Dundee and Gil Clancy..who were commentators for CBS with Tim Ryan..Both.and Angelo Dundee and Gil Clancy said that Mate Parlov won... mainly cose he collected lot of points with right hand jab...
Who won round 14? Without that round i have it 134-130 Parlov, but many close rounds.

Content was a very good fighter, A real pity that his life out of the ring was very colourful.
Good fight. Better than I expected. Parlov was shifty. Conteh was clearly the stronger puncher. Real close. I scored the two rounds where Conteh had points taken away even. Which means I have the fight scored 6-6-2. The 14th round isn't on this tape, so I don't know who won it. Conteh was the better fighter, but just by a hair.

Conteh, the better boxer, beautiful jab. Parlov a very accomplished fighter too, olympic gold in Munich. My dad was there. Strange, as not connected, but I've ended up living in Belgrade now, with Serb wife.

Sat through that to not find out who won 😂 I assume Parlov won not least due to the referee wanting to be remembered and do twice deducting a point from John Conteh. The Brit probably would have won if the the fight was in London

Good old Conteh going in for the kill at the stretch of them last three rounds. Really throwing punches with bad intentions I thought John Conteh won this great scrap. Parlov is tough guy. Maybe a home town decision.....
It was a mistake giving it to Parlov and he knew it. No shame in losing a fight would have been better than all of the salty taste and bitter comments. We would been seeing more of Parlov.
Conteh clearly was fighting against two people in the ring! Referee a disgrace. Conteh was a talented young world champion but lost his way after. Would've been nice if he'd regained the title, but that's boxing for you!

Thanks for this post. I've seen bits and pieces of this fight but i've not seen so much of it in one watch. Both fighters fought tremendous fights but I thought Conteh won it even with the point deductions.

Sure, Conteh was robbed ! Referee Rudy Ortega gave 147/141 for John Conteh ! And he was close enough to juge right.

I think Conteh won this and then Marvin Johnson kicked Parlov's ass in the next fight. Marvin Johnson should have been fighting John Conteh instead of Parlov but Marvin would have beaten John Conteh also.

Agreed. Marvin Johnson would have been too much for the 1978 version of John Conteh. Johnson's punching power, aggression and southpaw stance are the big difference between the pair.
Conteh won this fight - Mate was doing a lot of defensive work.

Parlov won this fight narrowly.
And to say robbed. Excuse me ther wore allsow fight in England, judged by British judges in GB promotion agencies.. So is it safe to assume that you robbed non British fighter's..boxing was always a shady sport and it will be in the future as well.
@Marko Jolic if you knew the politics of Britain you'd be aware liverpool where John's from, is like a mini Republic. Mostly Irish 70% and the rest are immigrant, John's family from Sierra leone, I was in french legion with his brother Frank. The scousers are not the most liked people in the UK due to their origin, especially then. No favours done for him, unlike Eastern Europe.
