Seeing as Conteh liked a night out and had done throughout the 1970s it’s incredible that he was still world class.

I remember watching this fight as a kid from the UK. Loved John Conteh. I thought he was great that night.
I was at this fight and it was an amazing spectacle to witness for a young 18 year old boy... I'll never forget it. As I remember it, the action from 11 rows back seemed so very much faster than it looks here.
I was there, too. Drive down from NYC with a couple of friends. You are right. Fights often look different when you seem them live and then again on tape.
I give it to Conteh especially if they are using an illegal substance on the eye of Saad

Ye he does move like spinks! Was spinks a southpaw? Spinks was awkward as hell
Yeah, I can see that. Similar upright style and excellent jab. But Conteh didn't have the Spinks Jinx right hand power. Conteh was less awkward, more of a classic European style upright fist-fencer.

These two were not calling the fight live and they still screwed it up. In 1977 Saad fought Marvin Johnson for the NABF title and won it in a 12 round KO; in 1979 he fought Johnson again, this time for Johnson's WBC title which Saad won in 8 rounds. How they could confuse these two fights when they are watching a tape is beyond me.

I trained at the Wellington alongside John he was a great fighter and funny as well.
MSM seemed to mostly pick up his game after about 5 rounds in his fights. That worked pretty well for him until he met Dwight Muhammad Qawi.
I just rewatched that 2nd fight between MSM and Qawi. That fight should have been stopped in the 3rd round. Qawi was a killing machine at that point of his career.

Saad definitely deserved to win because of the knockdowns but is was a close call
Yes it was close but agreed, Matthew did enough to keep his belt. Hats off to both men for showing a lot heart.

Remember watching this live on TV. Conteh had a hand injury- didn't throw a meaningful right in the entire fight.

Matthew spelled it Muhammad as did Ali, Dwight Qawi and Eddie Mustafa. The Prophet's translated name was also the same.
