      Omg. If you are his daughter, know that in a town of 250 people in the forests of Northern California, a girl in 1988 had a cassette of The Night of a Thousand Candles that played til it broke. His voice!
      It was a night to remember, but I guess just forgot…🎶
      Today I shared the Green Fields of France song with my 75 yr old mom, because red poppies sprouted randomly in the field across the way, so we’ve been revisiting all that touches that war and praying that Europe can hold its leaky boat afloat. Peace to all Europe, including UK.

    The Nore and Spithead mutinies in 1797 that this song is about led to major reforms in the Royal Navy. The divisional system was created to look after the welfare of all sailors and officers where an officer was assigned to each group to resolve or elevate any grievance by anyone in their division until resolution.
    lt is an important component of maintaining a fighting navy to this day. l should know as a former Australian naval officer who has had many divisions over my 30 odd years.

    This song has been on my Spotify "Liked Songs" list for a while now. All my kids listen to it ( 20y/o, 8 y/o, 7y/o) keeping the song alive. Listened to it over and over in my final school year in '88 and throughout my military service. Such a swinging vibe to it. Thought it was time to revisit the video. "If I starved on the streets of Bristol, I starved worse on a British Ship" my fav line!
    RIP Stefan Cush you legend!

    Interesting song, a catchy anthem even if a bit sketchy on the history.
    Presumably the mutiny on which this is based is the Nore mutiny of 1797, the second of four significant mutinies that year. The first one (at Spithead) was mostly over conditions in the navy and was successful, with mutineers not punished. The second was more political in its objectives and after it collapsed many were hanged. The third and fourth were bloody mutinies on individual ships.
    But this being 1797, waiting for Bonaparte - Napoleon was at this point a rising star of the French army but was campaigining in Italy and had yet to achieve the paramount political significance he would do later in the year. In any case, Bonaparte was no Jacobin - although to be fair the mutineers were probably not entirely clear about that sort of thing.

    Now one was waiting for "Bonaparte". A third of Britain's troops were Irish and had little love for England. There never was any one waiting for Bonaparte except to take him down I.E. The Connaught Rangers, The Brigade Of Guards, the Royal Marines and the Rifle Regiments (including the King's Royal American Rifles and the German Hessians.). There were many overs involved, and no disrespect to the others who stood against him and kept Europe free of Napoleonic control. End of the day, Napoleon got is arse kicked.

      The sailors in the Nore mutiny said they would defend the country from Bonaparte should he invade while it was happening. “Waiting for Bonaparte” is not a big up to post-revolutionary France. It means they were waiting for him should he invade.

    • @nickmail7604
      @nickmail7604 3 года назад +1

      You sound pretty thick son, waiting for Boneparte refers to the fact that the whole of British isles were waiting for the little French twat and his forces to invade, despite being in a mutiny they always said that if the French fleet were sighted they would put to sea and fight.

      Yeah, and as a member of the swinish multitude of Yorkshire, it's horrific that our class worked itself into a position (and was manipulated into) supporting Brexit. Like curing a head ache with a self fired dumdum round to the head. What a tragic misuse / perversion of that energy. Let's not stand with the other working class peoples of Europe, but "stick it to our betters" by handing the keys entirely over to them 🤦
