    Waiting For Bonaparte definitely qualifies as a 'lost classic'. Fantastic set of songs and the band at it's best. The sort of album that everyone remotely interested in rock music should have a copy of.

    Here was the first time I ever heard about Thomas Paine, author of The Winter Soldier. In these days, in these times.
    Sound of my youth, sound of my life.
    RIP Cush may the waves sail you to fairer shores sun in shine upon your face and the sails blowing in your back.

    Really weird reading these arguments. This is a rather well done song about the Nore mutiny of 1797. The themes of injustice and class difference were relevant to those times - as decried in Thomas Paine's pamphlet of the time - though not so relevant to 21st century Britain. I don't know of anyone who has been press-ganged, flogged or hanged for mutiny and piracy (as many of the ringleaders were in 1797). Why on earth do you all want to argue?

      Mike Williams
      This Song is about republicanism, liberalism and the ideas of freedom. Read about Thomas Paine. He wasn't a socialist. ;-)
      English nationalism isn't the antithesis of it, the long way to equality and liberty was very influenced by english men (many of them had patriotic feelings).

      @marmaduke9 10 лет назад +6

      pauljones651 He died a pauper and friendless in the US, because he believed in a fair shake for the common man. Which is the complete opposite of what the rich white slave owners of the revolution had in mind when they used the excuse of " tyranny and taxes " for their land grab !! How did it work out for the true owners of that country? The Native American!! Slaughtered, pushed onto worthless land, lied to, and now alcoholics and obese. How proud you yanks must be parading down main street to celebrate your shame!!

    • @patrickholt2270

      We reclaim the flag from the nationalists by asserting the Englishness and Britishness of internationalism, rebellion, republicanism and revolution. There's no sense in leaving it to them in disgust. Patriotism itself is no bad thing; every internationalist must begin in his own homeland, which he loves well enough to want to change.

    marmaduke9 i wish to address you intelligenty this song is in regard to the anti rulling class that incidentally has NEVER changed since the bloody normans got here
    ITS also a song i fondly remember, and I AM IRISH by decent! which [ if you live in Kent with a rather bland taste in music [i might add] ] makes you of SAXON stock so stop pissing pissing people off and enjoy the music please
    and the leave the hate outside the keyboard

    Rations on warships were famously generous. It was a major reason why most sailors weren't pressed. Warships need loads of people who're under-employed when not actually fighting, which left a lot of time for loafing, music and card playing. The truth is more nuanced and boring than myth.
