      That's because it is specifying a certain kind of staff, as opposed to it being a quarterstaff, jo staff, or whatever else. Hell, the even more technical term for it in Japanese is "rokushakubo," which is even more redundant in Japanese, as it means "6 shaku (equivalent to a foot) bo." I dunno about you, but I've never seen a Japanese or Okinawan bo of another length. Those tend to be hanbo or jo staves.

    I think a bo staff has great portability. You can tie a bag on the end and use it to carry stuff with you. Roman soldiers had a walking stick that carried their supplies and could be leaned against when they were tired. You just have to be willing to look ridiculous in order to pull it off.

    The one understanding lacking in these types of videos:
    What is the weapon that you most likely would have access to in a combat situation?
    A staff is found everywhere: broom, rake, pole, etc.
    Carrying a kubotan is much better than not carrying one.
    Knowing how to use one is the key. Training with them is.
    Knowing how to use a staff is much better than not knowing.
    Knowing them adds options that you wouldn't have otherwise.
    Having options is what wins fights and battles.
    Training is about being prepared for them.

    I always have a walking stick/staff when I go hiking. It is in my hand. It doesn’t need to be concealed.
    I pair it with a fixed blade camping/hunting knife. Essentially a small sword.
    I didn’t learn the bo staff, though. I use a single tapered kung fu staff instead. The movements are more like spear fighting than what I’ve seen in Kobudo.

    The other advantage the wood staff has over expandable is versatility of grip. You can hold it on the middle and on the back quarter instead of thirds, and that offers different techniques and ranges. • @NilAthelion
      @NilAthelion 2 года назад +7

      This! I was going to say this but you beat me by a year. Spears are so hilariously good in hallways, you just jab fast, erratically, and at different heights, and man, nobody wants to go down that hallway. There's just something really unpleasant about someone making stabby movements at you if you don't have something ranged or something good to block with, and can't dodge to either side. And even if it's blunt, very few people are going to go "okay, I'll eat the end of a wooden broomstick to the ribs: after I close in, I'll have the advantage. This is fine." Maybe it's just me, but there's a instinct "eh, let's not" that I feel when it comes to be stabbed, even with blunt things.

It's the sized weapon they gave Morgan in The Walking Dead, but the fight choreographer obviously new jack about using one (the majority of the techniques on that show are are pretty clearly meant for a 5-foot or longer stick). I'd recommend checking out Mihaly Dobroka's channel "Introduction to Chiba Sensei's Weapons System"-series for inspiration.

  • @someguyusa
    @someguyusa 3 месяца назад +1

    Staff is fine for self-defense if you have it available in an open area. The benefit of the staff is that you can use it like an extension of your fists or like sword. Holding a staff in thirds gives you about 2 feet of extra reach over your normal fists, but with much, much more variation for how and where to strike, plus you can add fakes, joint manipulations, thrusts, or switch to a long sword-style strike at any time. A person isn't going to just flippantly block a staff strike without taking damage. People just feel silly swinging a stick around, but the fact is that it's probably the most fundamental melee weapon in human history.
    As for portability or practicality, it's just a tool for a particular job. I hike often, so it's a natural fit for that. Same for rucking. That said, if you want something more portable and practical for daily or more city-like applications, then a jo is probably better since it's basically the size of a walking stick which is far less conspicuous if you are treating it as a walking stick.
    Finally, buy a rattan staff with the skin intact. Rattan is highly durable, flexible, and lightweight. I have been using rattan for my staff of choice for a while, and even practicing by beating it against an oak fence post, then the post looks beat up, but the rattan staff barely has a scratch.

    You mentioned an important point when you compared the Bo with escrima. Both are not weapons you usually carry on you in your daily life (at least where I live). But knowing how to use sticks as extensions of your limbs can give you an edge and make you a more (mentally) flexible fighter. Training the arnis double sticks for instance thought me to respond to the angle of an attack instead of the "type " of attack (haymaker punch, forehand or backhand swing with a stick etc). It is best to see it as an add on to your arsenal.

    Nice to finally see a Bo staff video. Personally I prefer the Jo Staff as its a bit more dynamic and there are more options in a smaller space. Plus I think it better without the taper as a standard one can generate more power. The taper is good for spinning and more flashy moves.

    Bo staff technique has been warped by kung-fu movies where they do a lot of unnecessary spinning and sweeping attacks.. im not that guy thats saying im right but my understanding is its more of a "use the front to jab/poke them somewhere soft to get them to contort and then use the back to sweep through and smack them"...another thing ive noticed is that people try to grab it but never actually expect to grab it so when they do grab it you have a split second of surprise to rush in and punch them a lot...

    Personally, the reason I opt for staff as a self defense weapon other than the abundance of it around is the balance. A well made staff carries a proper balance on the center and it resonates well with the movement of the body. It also provides an almost perfect defense range considering you can thrust and deliver two blows in one motion. Plus it's not decimating your opponent and just cripple them so you can get away. To me, bo staff is a pacifist weapon entirely made to protect than to kill. Also, I enjoy staff cause it's modular, put a small knife on top and you have a spear. Either way, my utmost reason for its preference is mainly due to its balance.

    Might be too lethal Seth but here is my take: A stabby sharpened sword in a parasol (there arent many in the market & are difficult to find online but definitely possible).
    A parasol is socially acceptable to carry so there you go. The other thing you can carry is the parasol club where the back end is heavy like a mace.
    Anything parasol like is socially ok, you can go inside anywhere with one, etc, etc.

    In the discussion about the collapsable staff, you didn't explore the social acceptability of deploying it. Scenario: Someone attacks you while walking home from the market. you use that and successfully defend yourself. Knowing your own community, will the use of this or any weapon be acceptable? I think that that is what makes even a walking stick unacceptable these days. At least, here in L.A.

    • @SenseiSeth

    • @no-trick-pony
      @no-trick-pony 4 года назад +6

      Depends on how to deploy it I guess.. Like, if you just hold it vertically in your fist and shake it down once to deploy one end and than pretend it's a walking stick, nobody will probably care much. If you do the "baton-im-gonna-beat-the-shit-out-of-you" move to deploy it, it's probably not acceptable.

    It could possibly be effective if you have practical experience with it, understand your range in the enviornment and have enough grappling experience to disarm it from them in case of a struggle (aka they try to grab it). I can see why you ranked flashlight above it, sure it has greater damage potentional, but that potention comes at a cost, the maneuverability and the concealibility as well, which means that a greater emphasis has be to placed with my skill in general (whipping out and extending it) not just with that weapon but the grappling associated with it, with a flashlight you have the element of surprise, and opportunity with a greater range, and not having to attack; that's not even going into the legal repercussions. Don't get me wrong, I bloody love the bo staff (it along with the sword were my first weapons I trained with), but disadvantages make it a weapon that while probably readily available (brooms, pipes, others) need a lot more skill to wield than say a flashlight. Anyways end of rant, hope everyone's having a good day👍
