The whole way through its "the average person" but gun is A but requires so much training? FightTips did a great video a few days ago about how empty hands can be better than a gun in certain situations but, again, not for the average user...
They rated the belt wrong. It’s not only physical pain but also emotional, cause they’ll remember the whipping from their dad
Yeah, triggering PTSD sounds like a good strategy
@@paulo9h underrated comment
Singham is master of belt. He always belts the bad guys after taking them out with his magnificent palm hits.
I'm going to be guessing that a good amount of people the average person would need to defend themselves against wouldn't know what it's like to have one
Not on the kids nowadays
Imagine someone gives you a hard time and in a minute you step of you car wearing helmet, shield in one hand, flashlight in another
hahahaha
Your appearance might diffuse the situation lol
With boss fight music playing in the background
No leg protection and break your legs with a Bo staff
Sabaton blasting from the car
I feel like an underrated factor for these is intimidation factor. Pulling out a knife isn't your best bet, but *nobody* wants to get into a fight with someone with a knife unless their own life is on the line (in which case, it's no longer self defense).
Exactly. You pull out a knife and a lot of people would back off and be like “ok this ain’t that serious.”
Depends on the situation.
Yup guaranteed to get cut so no one wants to be in that situation
Wisdom 💡
If the knife is the karambit, only option left is to run.
It's also a MASSIVE gamble that instantly raises the stakes of self defense. What happens when someone strikes you from behind and manages to repossess your knife?
It's good that he really takes laws into consideration. I defended myself with a shovel when I was 15 years old, hit the wrong spot. Now I'm 28 , can't get a good job, a fishing license, or own a firearm. I never had the option to go to college, join the military, or get a passport.
Same. Hit a guy with a crowbar at 12. I get off parole in 2 years at 31. Although I am looking into a pardon so I can join the military.
@@lasagnasux4934 Woah, I'm so sorry! Your story is really sobering and sad. 🙏
Holy shit if your telling the truth those Laws are fucked
When self defense turns into self harm in a different way. Sorry this happened to you guys and i wish the best for you
I guess that’s why lawyers, retired law enforcement, former prosecutors, etc. always say to remain silent and ask for an attorney anytime you ever have to use a weapon on another person to defend yourself.
Some attorney’s have even gone a step further in videos and have implied that you don’t even need to call 911 at all in the first place after you have defended yourself and that you have no obligation to. How much of that part is true is beyond me, I just hope I never have to find out
"If he doesn't care about pepper spray, you were done either way"
True statement
I put pepper spray on my eggs. It is delicious! It won't phase me! I have developed a tolerance.
I think I would have a better chance continuing an attack with pepper in the air than I would have with a hole in my head. But I'm not a doctor or anything.
the only thing about pepper spray is it's environment dependent. can't use in a enclosed space (use in a elevator would be a example), and you are at the mercy of the wind to deploy effectively. also yes. if a person doesn't care about pepper spray they could have a immunity built up for it. bear mace might be more effective.
@@MrCmon113 true true. Though the average person without practice would have a pretty abysmal hit rate with a hand gun
@@jasonallgood2122 bear mace is actually WAY WAY less potent than good commercial pepper spray, because bears have noses that make bloodhounds look like people. So it’s a giant cloud of what we’d consider mild OC spray, versus a smaller spay or squirt of hellfire.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to take a face full of bear spray before a fight, but if I had to pick I take the bear spray every day over the Fox labs stuff I carry.
Where does a rock rate on the list?

@@mango1570 DOUCHEBAG MIKE was actually right about this though
Sword and shield being the only ones in the same tier is perfect. Those two are like brothers. They've had other friends, of course, Shield's been paired with just about anything you can use in one hand and Sword had that brief affair with Dagger, but at the end of the day, these two will always be best friends.
Thoroughly time tested throughout the history of mankind.
Mace joins the chat
Props for Mike's "ubiquitous analog"
Also, I pretty much agreed with everything he said. Brass knuckles are 100% brutal but if you're strapping those on, make sure you have a good lawyer. For self-defense, draw speed and legality are huge.
Big omission: beer bottle
My problem with brass knuckles is that it doesn't improve your ability to land strikes significantly like a ranged weapon. If ur attacker has a ranged weapon or is a better fighter than you then u might just not land any strikes and in that situation its useless
Totally agreed on the bottle- soda is even better because its legal in public. Seems like it’s pretty good- ok blunt weapon and good stabbed if shattered
It’s funny that a taser is basically like a magic spell that electrocutes people, and it also has a hit rate, just like a spell in a game lol

I like how when they talked about swords, they considered the world as a whole, but then they completely forgot about that with baseball bats and bo staffs.
And a steel fucking chair LOL
A klisheè of an american way to see.
I haven't seen people in 3rd world countries carry a bat or a bo staff
Well even in 3rd world countries the sword is better than bats
@@EricRamz But it's not a thing that you find often there. Maximal as a decoration. I think the chance of getting one is important too. An example if you get a blade in america it will be probably a machete. In Europe and asian are more variied swordtypes. I would prefer the europe one. Even if they are heavier and are more often for battle against other equipped persons, they have a higher durablity and when dulling you can still hack instead of slicing. But i dont have an average figure so it could vary for you, because the europe one are often a bit heavier.
I love how better than nothing is D but nothing is A
I get the joke but the precedent was weapons in an average persons hands. and the "empty hand" was stated as learning how to fight. Not sayin I particularly agree with this list, but I see what they were getting at.
Nothing with training = A
Better than nothing in the hands of average guy (no training) = D
This comment made me laugh an unreasonable amount
Always have it with you. Legal in NJ.. yea, I like it :).
@@joejoelesh1197 but does a belt become an s, if you trained to use it for self defense?
I’m a Fma student and Kali sticks are just representations of a sword so I’m not offended about the ranking of the Kali Sticks. Good video 👍🏻
Hitting with the tip of a (kali) stick is the correct way of using it for both offense and defense (full swing disarming). The middle part of the stick is used for blocking. But good review. Kudos to both.
The invisible rock on Mike's hand made me think that maybe some martial arts are supposed to represent the use of a rock instead mimicking animal claws.
woaaah
Mind blown
Interesting thought.
Wow
hold a rock while you punch, more weight and pressure= more power
Did you hear about the guy that accidentally put his throwing stars through the dryer?...They were shrunken

I'm a ninja for hire. My boss was like "can you take care of this job" and I was like Shur-I-can 🤪
I'm gonna use that on those skanks.
Would you change the ranking of a bo-staff if you use it like a quarterstaff?
The way quarterstaves are generally used (held by the lower third) can generate quite a bit of power, with the downside of it needing more space.
Back in medieval times the quarterstaff was a very popular self defense weapon for peasants, would be fun to explore more about its effectivity in the modern day.
hard2hurt in the medieval era: challenging to wound
Their ranking for staffs is just wrong tbf, like Mike saying having a staff messes up wrestling when the opposite is true; and saying that it can't generate much power when it can easily cave someone's skull in one hit.
Maybe they're talking about those super lightweight bendy wushu kind of staffs? But any one made from actual solid wood is objectively super lethal.
Belts were the number 1 weapons English and Welsh street gangs in the 1970`s. My old physics teacher, a tough Welshman, had his belt confiscated by the police. He had sharpened the edge of the buckle with a grinder. The media even complained about the danger posed by certain styles of trouser belt.
The rock ,the most versatile weapon since the beginning of time , expendable, painful , throwable and easily found , plus the weapon of choice of a biblical brother.

In my country South Africa people kill each other with bricks quite often. Like a modern day stoning to death.

There is something to be said about the rock. The most convenient fact is that they are pretty much everywhere you go so you don't even have to carry them. Downside is, if you are fighting someone and find a rock, they can also find a rock. Looks like the odds just evened up!
My dad used to wear a motorcycle chain as a belt and he use that as his weapon of choice back in the day. Ripping that thing off and snapping it like a whip got people to leave him alone a few times hes told me haha

Every pro wrestler ever: HOW DARE YOU!!!
The steel bar stool is where I draw a line. The fight is fair until that moment and I intervene. Of course I also fight dirty ;)
Honestly it came out way higher than expected. Hell, the steel chair is above a baseball bat for some reason.
It's always amused me that they call aluminum chairs steel.
I think intimidation is worth considering as a factor for deterring potential assault as well.
If I had never watched hard2hurt, I would almost think that Icy Mike was a stable and sane individual.
Oh, wow!
I carry my professional wrestling title belt and my steel chair with me, wherever I go! I can't attest to how well they actually work as self defense weapons, though. And I can't figure out why everyone keeps staring...

Real men do what they want (as long as it's legal/moral) and don't give a rat's ash what others think.
Adult men don't carry umbrellas? Tell that to the Kingsmen lol
Been trying to justify getting a *good* flashlight. This helped lol.
Also recently took up martial arts and whenever the effectiveness of weapons gets brought up I like to try to focus on their context: historically it’s what was available and legal at the time, trying to say that they are *just as effective* now is claiming that times haven’t changed in either aspect. Their current usefulness is in applying open-handed techniques and, like you guys said, being able to grab any similar object in a pinch and be proficient enough to hold someone off. Thanks for the great video.
I legit enjoyed this one. Thanks man :)
You can carry a sword in Texas. We don't do excuses.
Sounds like Texas 😂😂
I believe you can get a license for it in WA as well
Dang lol
Cries in Californian 😭
Tyler Robbins technically california can open carry a sword. There’s no state law saying a max length of a fixed blade... so as long as its open carry 🤷🏻♂️
“DUDE YOU CAN TOAT A FU-subscribe HELMET” 😂😂😂
Hahaha glad you caught that!
I'm trained on some of these like the batons, pr-24, and taser. I think it would be super interesting to see an opinion on different types of tasers, specifically the stun type that must be manually inserted versus the projectile one. One of the biggest things people struggle with in my experience is properly judging the drop from the weight of the projectile in their aiming, leading to shots that miss or are far too high or low. Without both prongs in, it will still provide a shock, but to disable, you want a good spread from generally the shoulder down across the back towards right above the hip.
Super fascinating and really enjoyed your thoughts. I'm very interested in that tactical whip, looks bananas.
Wouldn't it also matter depending on the state of defense? Intimidation works on would-be attackers that didn't premeditate violence. You're allowed to carry swords in home, so their effectiveness increases in terms of home-based defenses. Staffs are incredibly potent at range and a single attack *would* cripple an attacker
Try headbutting someone with a helmet!!! I have, works like a charm!
I've seen the evidence
Why wouldn't it work if they are not wearing a helmet?
@@MrCmon113 You should think a bit more before asking such a dumb question, but ill still explain it to you. A normal headbutt can hurt and is not that easy to perform with a helmet you dont get hurt and it hurts your opponent more so you dont need to use a good technique.

Seth.. I really enjoy your videos. Good content and always a touch of humor. I was rofl at the subliminal "subscribe" message in this video :D Thanks. Best wishes
A lot of people seem to forget how effective loud screaming in a densely populated area is.
Look up the phenomena "bystander effect" screaming for help could work but definitely shouldn't be the only plan you have
Kathrine Genovese
That should probably be the first defense for a woman, then mace.
Are you curling in a ball and peeing and crapping yourself while screaming so the non helping observers are at least filming on thier phones ?
Of course I’m gonna stick up for it since I practice Eskrima/Kali but an average person getting hit with a stick could very easily shatter their bones. A lot of our strikes are focused on the collar bone and the forearm which are fragile getting hit my one just with light contact HURTS. And the skills are very interchangeable between anything single handed. so I’d put them a bit higher but each to their own
I wish Mike had expounded on the legality and elevation in lethality of guns vs other options even in the same tier. I imagine it seems like common sense to someone like him who engages with the topic so much, but the escalation from pepper spray to a gun is massive and I seldom feel the average Joe appreciates that. Probably an unfortunate side effect of it being an afterthought for the list. Always super enlightening to hear both of y’all’s perspectives on this stuff.
My man threw in a subliminal “subscribe” when they’re talking about the helmet 😂😂
made me want to unsub.
It was a censor
"I'd rather do neither, so I learned about both."
That is a great way to put this mindset.
You guys are awesome
Love the quick and subtle subscibe you said at 7:52 xD Gotta love subliminal stuff
From my experience, I disagree w/ half of their rankings, but it's interesting to hear their perspective.
Nice! What’s your experience through? If you don’t mind my asking?
Thanks for asking Seth! My experience w/ education is w/ Chinese, Malay, & Japanese approaches to martial arts from Taichi to Battodo, through some studio and dojo works. Street exp-wise, which were my thoughts while watching the video, a bball bat goes along way. Sai, staff, collapsible baton - maybe moreso the bludgeoning weapons - I'd rank higher. Others too long to yap about in comments lol Also, a big point, on top of firearms being the modern equalizer, is how deafening even pistol rounds can be, in given environments. Firearms would be S+ b/c you don't nessacarily have to be a good shot, there's allot of offensive options if one thinks of the utility of the firearm itself. Idk, jus sayin. Thanks for calling me out :]
That's legit.
Haha I wasn’t calling you out! People with different backgrounds have different views!
Lol, I took your question as a friendly inquiry, just questioning for fun. "calling out" is probably too harsh a phrase in this context.
But yeah, it's all about learning & bettering your capabilities, and ability, to achieve your goals, whatever they may be - so ultimately a candycane can turn into an offensive tool to get away from attackers if need be, the will to survive & get away will always open up opportunities if the drive is there. Just my opinion.
“Is that a sword in your pants or...” hahaha
haha had to
My favorite is Empty hand training, its always there, hard to disable, fun to train and build a strong Self-trust.
Plus, it is the ONLY one of these that deploys instantly; despite what dummy Mike says. Nothing else does. Every other tool takes time to take out (unless you are holding it already, of course)
I would definitely put a bo staff up around A or B. Been hit with a lot of sticks and being hit with a normal size stick (like a kali stick or baton) is one thing, but of the two times I've been hit with a big stick, both sucked. It's a lot harder to defend against and just hits a lot harder in general. Big sticks are underrated as hell.
What type of Kali stick? I'm guessing ratan and not iron wood.
Big Sticks are one of the most dangerous weapons, or anything like a shillelagh where it's got a knob or heavy head on it, thing is like a sledgehammer.
Pepper spray has always been my go-to. It's small enough to have on you in your pocket, can be drawn quickly, and can disable more than 1 person in rapid succession.
bam! But also possibly.. yourself included?
@@SenseiSeth Yeah, friendly fire is definitely one of it's few drawbacks.
It is also possible to develope an immunity to it.

Does anyone know where to find the belt defense video. Like the video of it being used
Thank both you and Mike for recognizing the true value of the kali sticks, it's the most recognition I've seen from any modern martial artist. Yes, you won't carry sticks everywhere, but you will train with them.
I like the concept of them... But the sticks themselves not as much, which makes sense
@@SenseiSeth Well for the really dedicated like myself, there's all sorts of "sticks" you can train with that can bring the power which the sticks are lacking as mentioned in the vid. Metal pipes/hardwood sticks, training swords, or any other weighted stick, are the prime example, as they weigh as much as a sword/machete would (which FMA was intended for in the first place), they are safer than a sword to train with since they're not sharp, they have better power to actually hurt someone if you DO manage to find a pipe or something of similar weight and shape in the streetz, and if nothing else, they're just very useful fitness devices to give you the strength to be able to use the heavy hitting weapons that can actually hurt your assailant, or if you're a fitness fanatic, just as a weight lifting device. 😂
I have a couple steel Escrimas and after training with them I can say they definitely wear you down if you’re not used to them. The amount of damage they could do if you hit someone with one would be crazy enough to the point where I’ve told myself I’m not carrying those things around as I’d rather not kill someone on the off chance of me actually using them as a self defense weapon. They’d be amazing for assault for sure but self defense... not so much 😂😂😂 I have aluminum ones for that. Still weighted just nowhere near as much as the steel ones.
@@blazer-mp2rq Well don't carry them around to beat people up, just train with them. Boost your natural strength too in case you don't find a weapon for street defense. And if practice with heavier stuff, anything lighter than that will be a peace of cake to use. The Romans used training weapons that were double the weight of the actual weapons. And yes, they can wear you down if you're not careful. I suggest doing real short range (corto) when striking with them. Medium range at best. And if you can get a tire setup, strike the tire.
agreed. kali sticks themselves are not the EDC, but the skill gained from them is. i kinda agree on the heavier sticks, because in my opinion the regular stick is much lighter than your machete/bolo would be, its easier to transfer the skill from a metal pipe of the same length and weight as the sword. that being said, rattan is better for sparring as it's more flexible and durable

If you live in a cold country or area you gotta worry about them big poofy winter coats getting in the way of the taser barbs too, which I'm sure is not a time.
Also, my parents were both cops and my mom advised me never to use a knife in self defense for three reasons:
1. I don't know how to use one properly lol
2. There's a chance that your attacker will use it against you, if by chance you drop it or whatever
3. A lot of people who don't understand knives will let the handle slip and it will only end up cutting your hand. Especially if your hands are already wet for whatever reason. Lots of amateurs that murder with knives often do this, which is how they end up getting caught.
Moral is never to use a weapon you don't understand, and try to avoid ever using one if that's possible.

I liked the discussion more than the rankings. It seemed that there was a lot of inconsistency in applying universal factors such as legality, but the discussion around each was useful.
The problem I see with the knife ranking is that with most knives the average person will just shank someone a bunch of times with it, which is much harder to defend against than most people give credit and can be done more easily under stress than deploying a gun.
@WheresPaul#1981 if youve ever had to defend and not get cut with a wooden knife (get stabbed 50 times) YOU WILL REALIZE ITS much much harder to stop the stabbing
ive had to stop a wooden knife from attacking me with over 10 stabs and its REALLY REALLY HARD
1.) you cant grab and disable the hand fast enough
2.) if they keep stabbing YOU BLEED OUT FASTER AND FASTER
3.) only when youve experienced having been stabbed for over a few years and have grown accustomed to 10 years of experience of blocking and disabling stabbing repeatedly by a wooden knife do you gain some experience
ive had my martial arts teacher do this self defense of the reality of him just chasing after you and stabbing
and lets just say this i couldent grab stop or remove the knife from his hands and i already got stabbed 10 times in just 5 seconds and this only happened that one time
but i realized the truth of how quick it all ends if their target is only 1 thing : stab stab stab
and only when you have at least 10 years of experince of removing disabling the knife from their hands without any injury do you have SOME experience in defending against a knife
a gun is not brutal
ITS SIMPLELY QUICK AND EASY
a knife however
OOOOOOOO ITS REALLY REALLY BRUTAL
you feel the life bleeding out of you and nothing you can do to stop it and feel pain
THATS ALL YOU FEEL as the attacker attacks relentlessly endlessly
this coming from a martial artist that had to defend against a wooden knife
and i dint even last 5-10 seconds
now imagine a real knife
YOU WONT LAST MUCH LONGER
I know you guys did the video a year ago but what are your thoughts on pepper ball guns?
Hey, regarding the taser, what about other electroshock devices like contact stun guns? Or even a flashlight with an electroshock feature.
Mike had it right when he said the Kali stick is an analog for the machete. It’s a training tool. It translates into weapons like the gijo stick and other hardwood weapons - and especially a bladed weapon.
thats dope!
Yeah. When they came to the Kali sticks, my immediate question was "rattan or hardwood?" I wouldn't want to be hit by a hardwood Kali stick, but a rattan stick is meant to be a relatively safe training weapon. I've ended up blocking a few hard shots with my forearm during stick sparring (wearing only helmets and gloves for protection), and they don't do much more than leave a bruise.
I have the light rattan sticks for training. They hurt but thats all. But my 2 heavy sticks are different. They hit like a police baton.
For real, hardwood ain’t no joke. I’m not even sure it’s a self defense weapon because how destructive it can be
@@Tutorp that was my thought too. I have a set of kamagong sticks, and you really don't want to get hit by them.
I feel like baton should be higher, it's really easy to break bone with a good baton and some basic training
Absolutely love the office line “muckduck”
The worst thing about the people that say they'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 is that most of them are the type who pulls on an unarmed person.
Imagine someone on the street casually going for a walk carrying a sword and shield
I mean, maybe in some places lol
And then imagine a group of police approaching him.
or even better. a flashlight and a shield
A Bladed Flashlight and a Shield
I don't have to imagine. I walk around with My Xena Sword all the time.
This was a great video, next time I go out I’ll bring out ye old crusading sword
haha whatever it takes
Love the video.
I still wonder about tee-ball bats and child-size cricket bats.
Nothing beats dependable friends. Try to be around people. Also gives opportunity to draw whatever weapon.
A flashlight > Knowing how to fight
~ icy Mike 2020
Don't think he meant it to be quite that simple. He mentions plenty of times how if you don't know how to fight, most of these aren't very effective for long
shout out to my man for mentioning HEMA
ayee
Hey Seth , new guy here !
Loving these three vids ! !
Can I please formally challenge the old bald guy to a fight ?

On the Police Activity channel there is a video of the Police intervention in the United States during which a well-trained officer under the influence of stress and under fire, responding with fire from the service Glock, accidentally pressed the magazine release twice and had to reload twice, and then had to return for one of the accidentally released magazines so that he can reload and defend himself further. This is the power of stress...

No one:
Not a single soul:
Icy Mike: gun gun gun gun gun gun gun gun gun
lol
Actually the correct term for “gun” would be a hand held combustion based projectile launching device.
Blank hmmmm indeed
Icy Mike was reciting lyrics to that new gun song. What's it called, "Guns, Guns, and More Guns".
To be fair, a baseball bat is an incredibly effective weapon, and you can down someone with it with one blow, untrained. But I agree that it is inordinately unlikely you'll be in a situation where you have one
Easy to counter or take if apponent trained and strong, but works all time
steel chair though :P
also easy to underestimate: the paddle. It's like a baseball bat with two narrow edges. (I always tell this to youngsters fooling around on the canals when they rented boats ... i think that has saved a skull or two...)
Did Mike just casually sing the NES Balloon Fight tune with the word "gun" ?
Subscribed, very talent
The fun thing with Shuriken and similar small, sharp weapons. They seem to have been primarily a method of delivering poison. You peg someone with a shuriken smeared in waste and run away. Even with antibiotics, they're going to have a bad time.
A rock? Can I have "The" Rock, Dwayne Johnson.. I Can just use him against all of these.
In Australia E is a fail we don’t use F because the word “fail” is too negative apparently
Lolol
In the states E means Excellent
In Africa in relatively modern times a whip like weapon has been brutally used for crowd control.
I did a test with an old bike helmet. It doesn't reliably stop lead free airgun pellets or even just the plastic casings (these actually make a giant exit wound). Foam is good against blunt weapons but blades and high speed projectiles may get through it pretty easily. That being said, maybe it would cause them to lose a lot of energy. And if it's carbon, that might actually stop a knife.
