    Having a free hand when using a sword for self defense is extremely important. You can utilize a shield or secondary weapon such as pepper spray. My own personal preference for a secondary weapon is a .357 magnum.

    Also small point, of which I'm sure you're probably already aware, is that while thrusts are incredibly deadly, they often have less "stopping power" than cuts. That is to say, a thrust may be lethal, but the target may be able to fight for several seconds or even minutes before they fall down and die. On the other hand, whilst a cut may not be lethal, a severed tendon or limb can be instantly incapacitating. On the other other hand, a point is very useful for keeping an enemy at bay...

      Interesting how her carrying a sword didn’t prevent the criminals from engaging.
      It seems to support my opinion that HEMA type weapons aren’t superior for self defense because of their relative obscurity to criminals. On the her hand, machetes are universally recognized, psychologically more intimidating to criminals and more likely to cause the attacker to disengage.

      @@buddymoore1543as an officer in high crime areas, i have actually gotten to witness knife v gun several times. Including in my own self defense moments.
      People vastly underestimate knives and overestimate guns. In one case, two hit men were sent to kill a rival gang member. They pulled a gun, forced him into a car (don't ask me why, they usually just shoot you idk what was different here, but they tried to take him alive). Needless to say, inside the car, the victim pulls a knife and fucks them up. Stabbed the gun guy first. He fired a shot, completely missed, jumped out the car and bled out quickly from neck wounds. The second dude did get two shots off, one striking the victim in the belly, doing a lot od damage, but he too was fucked up very badly. Nearly died on scene, later died at the hospital.
      Victim ended up with a severe injury, had to essentially have bowl reconstruction done, but lived.
      We never got the full story. According to him it was random.
      Long story short, in close ranges, think 10 feet or less like public bathrooms, cars, busses, so forth, I'll pick an edged weapon or a revolver.
      What fucked those two guys up was they had glocks. If you take a glock out of battery, by grabbing it, it won't fire. The first dude, his gun got grabbed. He got one shot off before it was out of battery, dude apparently knocked it aside and it missed. Then it was knife against unarmed man clinging to a useless weapon. Second man shot the victim as he turned on him, but the victim grabbed his gun two, second shot went off, but missed. Then he got fucked up too.
      There are a few other cases. But I found that to be the most interesting.

      So: a sword and historic body armor are great for self defense, in most scenario's where you would realistically be walking around wearing a sword and historic body armor. I think that story sums up the discussion on swords for modern self defense quite nicely. Anything you're not realistically going to be carrying around at least about 75% of the time when you're outside your house, including all of the riskiest moments (going clubbing at night, visiting a sports match where hooligans might be present) is probably not worth considering for self defense. It's (in my opinion) much better to carry nothing than to spend a lot of time, energy and money to select the perfect weapon and then still carry nothing.
      Al old housemate of mine also fended off a mugger, he hit the guy with his skateboard, because that's what he had on him.

    As someone who spent a great deal of his adult life in armed conflict there's one thing I would like to point out. Not everyone will be capable, nor willing, (Even to defend themselves believe it or not) to strike someone with a large bladed weapon. Despite believing they could. The amount of visceral feedback that results from that is enough to give most people pause for good reason. That's why most self-defense weapons (In the modern day anyhow) are either blunt weapons (That generally render someone unconscious, or do minimal 'visual' damage), SMALL bladed weapons or weapons that can be used from a distance. It's far more impersonal. Spilling someones intestines on the floor is not something most people are equipped to handle and those that are forced to never want to again. Chopping someone's arm off, or burying a 22" blade in someones neck is a pretty intense way to step into the 'self-defense' forum.
    I'm not at all saying you shouldn't if you find yourself in that situation, or that it can't be done because you should protect yourself by whatever means necessary. I'm simply saying that a lot of people (In the modern day, especially in 1st world countries who have never been exposed to any type of real violence) would have difficulty using a large bladed weapon in a confrontation unless they had absolutely no other option and the threat to their life was imminent. Even in that context I'm not sure how many would actually bring themselves to do it. After all, a half of a second hesitation is usually the difference between life and death by itself.
    I think this kind of thing gets glossed over a lot in discussions about self-defense and weapons in general and it should be at the very least discussed. There are two types of responses in high-stress situations. Fight. Or Flight. People like to think they're prepared for terrible, mind-bending scenarios and the fact of the matter is you don't know what kind of person you are until that type of situation occurs. A person who is more prone to flight (As opposed to fight) is going to have a considerably difficult time slashing or stabbing someone with a large blade. I guess my point is that the weapon type itself could have a considerable impact on the individuals ability to make the judgement call to actually use it and should be part of the equation.

    • @pohjanakka4992
      @pohjanakka4992 2 года назад +11

      Hm. Use a sword that hasn't been sharpened, at least not well enough to spill anyone's guts? Might be easier to hit if you know you will not see blood, or not THAT much of it (okay, getting hit on the head can spill a lot, but anyway), but a bit longer blunt sword might still break bones, and definitely should be able to cause rather painful soft tissue damage if used with sufficient force (I got permanent soft tissue damage on my leg from slipping and falling on top of a very narrow and high doorstep a couple of decades ago). Of course, it would way less effective, but better than nothing?
      And if the fact that it is pretty blunt is not obvious at a glance it might scare at least some people away. If there are people here from the Society for Creative Anachronism they may have heard the old story of an SCA lady who was threatened in some city late in the evening while on her way home from either an event or some sort of practice. She was wearing a cape and carrying a long sword under it - presumably blunt - but they left when she pulled the cape aside and they saw the sword. Okay, I'm not sure if that is a true story or not, but it was always told as if true. I think there is a filk about it (it's been a few decades since I was active). If it's true I suppose one alternative is that they thought she was the dangerous type of crazy.

    • @TheScarvig
      @TheScarvig 2 года назад +55

      i would like to add that to my knowledge self defense is usually limited to the "minimal means to incapacitate" in most civilised countries. meaning that disemboweling someone because you "feel threatened" by someone is a bit over the top... defending yourself with a deadly weapon against an opponent with a club or a knife should be the last option.
      so carrying a weapon that can be used better on the non lethal end (a cut that can fully incapacitate someone will likely have them bleed out if not treated) is preferable because you are less likely to be blamed of using unnecessary force if you use the weapon that is inherently less lethal

      I'm a forty year old woman with a chronic illness and in America, if you have a disability you're not allowed to own a firearm. Fortunately (somewhat) I'm part of what's now called HEMA, I'm old enough that it's actually a point of pride that folk like me helped make European "martial arts" become a thing, part of an ongoing campaign I took part in since before I graduated in 2000. Back then, we had nothing, now we have resources and science and even SCHOOLS!!! And I'm not part of it anymore due to my broken body lol!!!!!!! ........ ...... .. .
      Anyway, now that I'm older (and I'm still a student of all martial arts, including Eastern) and aware of laws and legal .... things... I do genuinely recommend Professor Chad's advocacy of the "stick." There's a reason police still use it the world over, and if you're competent enough regarding your own body, training, and limitations you can incorporate ALL of your sword/longsword techniques into a good meter or 50 inch stick.
      *sighs, monotone* "Branch out" in your training... LOL no seriously, seriously. I've taken to training with a rough "bokken" length stave, and intend to make my own oak bokken soon to my own specs and grip, strike points, etc. , training to use the majority of high and tail-guard strikes in hallways, close quarters, and you have the advantage of using it like a jo stave and even applying "walking stick" and akido techniques. The greatest (and it *SUCKS* that I have to say this at all) benefit is that right now " a stick" isn't considered a lethal weapon. Like thumbs, foreheads, and trachea strikes. I mean nugs, kuh nives, and hurtful feelings.

      @@wren7195 I do not want to pry or be rude, but I do not want people in the USA left with the opinion that having a disability automatically means you cannot own a firearm. In fact, there is no reason a disability resulting from physical injury would prevent you from owning a firearm, outside of any individual draconian state laws. The types of disabilities that would prevent one from owning a weapon would be mental illnesses, or severe developmental delays, that could result in a court ruling that a person is mentally incompetent, unable to care for themselves, or result in an involuntary commitment in a psychiatric facility.

    Today, some armed forces, instead of issuing a longer blade than a standard 8"-10"/20-25cm fighting knife are issuing tomahawks, either with a spike or hammer head opposite the blade. you can find something similar in the hardware store in the hammer section as a "shingling hammer' or "roofing hammer"; with a hammer head opposite a blade for lifting asphalt roof shingles. This has the advantage that it is made as a "tool", so does not fall afoul of any "dangerous weapons" laws if you are walking around in public with one on your belt. Plus some jeans have a loop intended for the carrying of such a tool.

    • @shane9287

      Military needs to consider pack weight, so survival, breaching, and combat utility in one tool is incredible for them. Seems like you'd be worse off at grapple-distance because an axe is easier to grab, but I wouldn't know. Still, in a self-defense context outside of hiking, I don't think the axe is better than the knife. Sure, you can pass the axe as a tool, but you can also just conceal the knife.
      So for self-defense in my opinion, knife beats axe, and in certain situations, Gladius beats knife and axe for the reasons he discussed, but is still pretty inconvenient.

I have not been able to do any testing yet, but from my experience in the various martial arts, including HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and sword fighting, I have decided I want a combination between a war hammer and a cane sword. The war hammer head would act as the cane handle at the top, with the sword handle at the bottom, where a quick twist would free the sword. I say the sword handle at the bottom as opposed to at the top with most cane swords, is now I have two weapons, I flip the sheath around, and I have a war hammer as my secondary weapon. I can strike with the hammer or the spike head, or use it as a defensive parrying device that I can hook the attacker or their weapon and pull them off balance, out of position, or even disarm them.

    "They could try to grab the back end of the machete."
    That's true, but there's an advantage to a single-edged blade in this context. It has a less-lethal setting if needed. To be clear, hitting someone with the dull side of a heavier longer machete is still gonna hurt like hell, and probably break bones. It might even crack their skull. But it's possible to bash someone with the dull side of a machete in a way that can be justified in a situation where they're clearly a menace to you but aren't (yet) trying to kill you.

    • @drake1360
      @drake1360 2 года назад +53

      Legally speaking, if they're threatening you with bodily harm, and you pull out a machete, the legal consequences will be the same regardless of which side you choose or even if you never actually use it. All that matters is whether or not you had legitimate reason to believe that you were in danger and you could not escape or prevent the confrontation, so any situation where you'd be justified to hit them with the blunt edge, you'd also be allowed to hit them with the sharp one.
      If they're serious enough about trying to hurt you that they're coming at you while you're holding a weapon, you need to make sure you take them down in one or 2 hits or else they might get the chance to take the weapon from you.

      Curved blade, not usually fully edged on the back, if at all, not optimized for thrusting, as well as being significantly longer. In a straight fight, they are superior, assuming everything else is equal, but this wasn't an analysis of sword vs. sword combat.
      The gladius is more optimized for most modern interactions. It is easier to carry in crowded spaces, while transferring into or out of vehicles, and works quite well in a grappling situation.
      To reiterate, I agree with you that the cutlass has an edge over the gladius, but only if they are facing each other head to head. Most of that advantage falls in reach, though. The knuckle duster is nifty, but it doesn't really take the cake for this lineup.
      I also understand the mentality of preference. I'd be more likely to carry a bokken then a gladius, as I am more practiced with it, but I still agree with the analysis from a point of weapon trait alone.

The 1889 was specifically made to be a good thruster, as it has an in line point and is sharpened on both edges at the tip. Also they were designed to be used in tight spaces, as those were common in boarding situations.

    • @WanderingWolfe
      @WanderingWolfe 2 года назад +1

      @@ulfkoehler9730 Very true, and e cellent points. I tried to stick with the 'generally' statement, since cutlasses tend to have notable design variance.
      That said, I do feel like in this particular hypothetical, wherein another sword isn't involved, the length is detrimental. Sitting around 30 inches, usually, a cutlass is far less convenient for the modern person to carry about.
      I know the Gladius is about 25 inches, but that difference is huge in wearability.
      I still agree, with equal training and footing, the cutlass wins, but it has some unnecessary extras within the given setting.

    OK, I'm about to start the vid (paused at intro), and I've thought about this a lot. Specifically - home defense. I think a naval cutlass is it. The sword was designed for CQB in tight spaces against unarmored opponents when guns were a thing. Short blade to not get stuck in walls/ceilings (but not so short to be a disadvantage - long enough to give some reach), complex hilt to protect hand and resist disarms (and you can punch with it), curved for the slash but with a tip that can thrust. Those are all advantages in home defense scenarios. IF combined with a UHMWPE heater or rotella/targe thick enough to stop small arms (and you ensure the hilt won't interfere with the shield), you have a VERY viable modern home defense option. Especially with targe strapping partially freeing up the offhand and the spike - so many options!

    11:07: "Yeah, if you had one [greatsword] in a civilian scuffle and you could use it for self-defense... there is a general rule that can't be taken too much out of context, of bigger can usually be better with swords."
    The immortal tale of Sir Trude comes to mind!
    One night, after a long day of Ren Faire practice, a lady knight of the SCA was walking home. Through Central Park. In the 70s. Her heavy cloak was pulled tight against the New York chill, and she didn't even seem to notice a mugger coming up on her.
    He accosted her and demanded all her money. She said no. He pulls a knife. "I've got six inches of steel says you will."
    She laughs it off. He slashes at her... and hits chainmail under her cloak. Then she reaches under the cloak and draws a broadsword. "I'll see your six and raise you thirty-five," she said, brandishing it at the very-much-_not_-wearing-armor thug, who promptly turned tail and ran.

      Unfortunate that he didn't address it at all.
      I also agree with another post that pointed out that, while stabbing will kill faster, slashing will end a fight faster. Catastrophic damage to a limb tends to end a fight immediately. While a gut wound may be fought through for awhile longer.

    • @sharathsh9987
      @sharathsh9987 Год назад

      @Niall K I don't think there's anything in my comment that warrants your reply. I agree with you, mostly. I know that, like some single-edged blades, wakizashi can also stab. Even a katana can be used as a stabbing weapon, although the tempered point and the ridge make slashing more effective (obviously). I'm in the Gladius camp and not the wakizashi camp simply because Gladius is a double-edged weapon. As I said, and as I sort of inferred what Shad meant, Gladius just offers a little bit more versatility.
      You mentioned that wakizashi is a good stabbing weapon and a good personal defense option, which Shad admittedly glossed over, and then you sort of weakened the case for wakizashi by saying that stabbing is less effective than slashing in a fight. I don't know what your point was here?

    edit: reason being: Most people wont catch an other person having a sword, let alone be attacked with it, yet knifes are quite common, thus the most ideal sword for a modern day should be one that was designed to be used against such.

    So this might sound dumb, but I own one so I feel the need to vouch for it. In effect a 16 inch US Bayonet is a good option. It's profile is tiny compared to a gladius, has roughly the same reach, and the top quarter to half of the back side usually has a cutting edge as a lot of the ones that went into the surplus market were often times sharpened in the field by G.I.s. And it is deceptively heavy as far as the blade goes because it was made to go through a person, which makes it decent at chopping. Another upside, if you own a Springfield, an M1 garand, or a Trench gun with bayonet lug, you've now got a pseudo spear, attached to your gun.

    I think a more interesting variant of this conversation is how this works applied to modernity. It's illegal to brandish a firearm even if you intend it to deescalate a conflict. It's a felony in most places in America. Nobody's carrying around machetes either, let alone long swords.
    In a modern context, particularly in the western world, where obvious weapons are so taboo in public. I feel it would be better to discuss the use of common objects that are items that people carry with them everywhere they go. Or, items that are likely to be close at hand in a building or on the street or perhaps in a shop. For a woman, for example, a purse or handbag could be an effective small shield used to deflect a knife blade. Especially, if the bag were chosen with this idea in mind. In many Asian martial art forms, various weapons are actually designed from their original forms as tools and farming implements. The same spirit should be used for choice of weapons today. Consider what tools you carry or have near to hand in your everyday life and consider which of them might serve as an effective weapon in a pinch.
    I also like the idea of discussing this within the confines of a SHTF scenario. In America, guns are and would be everyone's first choice. But, ammunition could become scarce after a certain point. This could force everyone to resort to what are essentially medieval weapons to survive. Bows, crossbows, knives, swords, machetes, etc. Armor is not readily available so slashing weapons might be a good choice. Although, a piercing wound has proved historically, in the absence of good medical care, to be much more lethal. I suspect that surgery would be quite rare in a SHTF scenario.
    After having studied medieval weapons and history for many years, my favorite is the spear and a small shield. It requires very little technical expertise to make a good spear. And it has the advantage of reach. It's resource inexpensive to produce. It also doesn't require a great deal of skill to use fairly effectively. A shield can be made easily with resources that are available everywhere. They are far more effectively defensive than the average person believes. And, they are also utilized effectively with little martial practice.
    I don't know though. Just something to consider.

      An idiot with a knife can be expected to run you down if they are more fit and mentally prepared than you are (which is likely the case if they are the instigator). Cops with pistols routinely die to knife wielding idiots who charge them from ~10 yards away. Yes, in theory you could outrun a knife, but you have to notice the person, turn around, and only then can you begin accelerating.
      An idiot with a pistol has horrible accuracy. It takes a LOT of practice, regularly, to be able to accurately shoot someone ~10 yards away. Additionally, a single shot from a pistol is often less lethal than a single stab with a knife. The latter leaves a much larger wound. Pistols are also very loud (even if "silenced"), and are more likely to get the cops/ambulance called faster. Pistols are also harder to use in a grapple than a knife (one of the reasons cops with pistols routinely die to knives).
      Both are scary, but I'd honestly be more scared of the knife. It would depend on the exact range, positioning, fitness, and sobriety of the attacker. Pistols have a higher skill floor (a low skill/intoxicated attacker will miss), while a knife is quite lethal no matter how drunk or unskilled an attacker is. Since most attackers are mentally unstable/low skilled, it stands to reason that the weapon with a low skill floor would be more dangerous.
      Against a truly experienced attacker, you'd be dead no matter what.

    As a historical combat enthusiast, I tend to practice a lot. About a 15 years ago, I worked overnights at a hotel. One slow night, I decided to do some form work in the lobby and went to my vehicle to get a practice blade. As I was leaned over, a man snuck up on me and demanded my wallet and keys. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed he had a knife. I happened to have a rapier within reach and turned around to face him. He quickly decided he had other places to be. Had he been carrying a firearm, I know better than to resist. But the force multiplier factor was in my favor that day.
    As to practical self-defense, I live in a place where I can carry a firearm, so I do. I also carry a knife and flashlight. When I happen to visit somewhere that's disallowed, I have a large flashlight that could effectively double as a club and I've fashioned a belt holster for it. My state actually has a law against long blades on a person (even with a concealed handgun license), or I would absolutely carry a tactical gladius, or at least a larger knife.

    The best weapon for self defense is one which
    1: You can carry discretely in public
    2: can be used by weak people against stronger assailants
    3: can disable a stronger opponent before they hurt you.
    The best weapon for self defense is a handgun of at least .38 Special caliber.
    Then the problem of legal restrictions come in.
    Most places don't let you carry a firearm, or a sword, in public. In Australia or Japan it is extremely difficult to even own a sword at all.
    In Japan it's illegal to carry even a pocket knife.
    England has the reputation of arresting the victims of assault for brutally defending themselves.
    Basically, in civilized countries, in case of attack, the best tool for self defense is a cell phone. Try to stay alive long enough to call the police and give as clear a description of your assailant as possible so they can find and arrest your murderer.

      As such while arresting the actual antagonist of the scene is the just and moral thing to do, the State finds threats to its monopoly on violence far more egregious than any burglar, serial killer, or molester.

    I usually sleep buttass naked, but if I hear a bump in the night, I’d want to grab a bathrobe or something before going downstairs to see what’s up. … but who says I have to grab a bathrobe?

    Think about it: a custom-made gambeson; something that uses Velcro, so it’s easy to throw on.
    Think about how quickly you can put on a loose jacket: like 2 seconds tops. With velcro, you won’t even need to take any time to zip it up, or tie a belt.
    Make the gambeson long enough to cover you all the way down to the knees, and it can act as a fully-functional attire , despite being a single piece of clothing. Add the fact that the it’s slash/stab resistant?
    You can be butt neked and going commando underneath, and still be fully covered and protected from your head to your knees, by something as stylish as it is functional.
    If a thick hood was integrated into it, you could use it like a built-in coif!
    Make the collar thick enough, and perhaps you could fold it upward, to function as padded gorget/beaver, to protect your neck!

      Team forward curved blades for the win! I have been fascinated with them ever since I got to use a falx at a restoration event here in Romania. A combination of thrusting and cutting, devastating against unarmored foes and very good against shields.

      And when cutting, the blade tends to glide into the Material being cut while straight and backwards-curved- blades will try to slide outwards while cutting. Kukri for the win. Or even better: the forward hook-curved fiskars garden Machete.

    I think I'd pick a Greek Xiphos. It's still in the gladius wheelhouse with a bit more bite on the chop/slash with out sacrificing the thrust. Being that almost no one in the modern era wears protective armor on a daily basis a large slash wound is just as likely to take someone out of a fight with a bit less likely loss of life (depending on where and how deep of course) compared to thrusting through an organ but the option is still there if absolutely necessary.

  • @naschterraphantom495

    I would say using a Jian is a good alternative to the Gladius, not only you can wield it one handed but also some scabbard designs make the Jian while sheathed look like a walking stick.

    I'm a big fan of a Self-Defense Mag Light. IE a really bright STICK. It's solid construction provides for both solid striking, ability to block bladed weapons, and its rounded bulb like end is very mace like. They're also quite hefty, so plenty of "power" behind them.
    Also they're a common tool a lot of people will have on hand.

      Cloud Defensive have some pretty overenginerded weapons flashlights, heavier, sturdier, a tad more expensive than surefire or streamlight. Also if you want a legally owned IED you can buy yourself a cheapo O-Light.

    • @drthmik
      @drthmik 2 года назад +1

      The proper way to hold those is to hold the bulb end where the light is and strike with the rear of the flashlight
      You can even hold it next to your head to use the light most efectively and it is already in a ready to strike position
      That is how Cops use flashlights
      because the Bulb end LOOKS like a Mace, But it is the lightest part of the Light and using that end would only break your flashlight wile DECREASING the effectiveness of the weapon
