DISCLAIMER: surviving falchions have much stronger distal tapers than the one we made in this video. We were limited by starting with a machete blade which wasn't perfect but much closer to historical falchions than ones you can buy. Historical falchions are about the same weight as ours, if a little more top heavy, but start at around 5mm thick at the base and taper to around 1.5mm at the top, and then have a gradual bevel that makes it even thinner on the flat part of the blade making them very thin swords overall. I'll be making a follow-up video discussing all the differences between our falchion and the real museum ones.
So why not use a much thicker blade like the one you abandoned which started much thicker then hit it with the sander to give it a nice taper? Not to mention, rockwell testing the material to begin with, then differential case hardening and appropriate heat treating to make it a vastly superior product with minimal effort (albeit repetitive waiting around like all heat treats are).
Finally I see someone shows how to make a proper falchion after Alex Steele (and for the fraction of the cost ;). Very nice job! The ONLY drawback is that the handle should be much SHORTER. It's a bit shame, since if you really wanted to feel how historically accurate one-handed falchion handles, your hand should be tight between the crossguard and the pommel...
@@bashpr0mpt-rc5dd why the fuck would you case harden a sword? just use proper steel...
Why didn't you show the reprofiling process?
Where can I buy this machete?
Thats the legendary Shad's Falchete!
Can't wait until Tyranth makes himself a two-handed Falchtana...
We had the Skalchion before, now get ready for Shads Falchete!
Shadalchete?
Not to be confused with flechette.
The Brooks Falchete
You know a sword's good when Shad's first words aren't even words but just excited and satisfied grunts and yelling, no words can properly describe just how good a really good sword is other than happy cave man noises
no words, no over reaction, just default human noises
Maybe I should try to make a katana now…
yes.
Out of a machete???
Yes. You should.
i believe in you
How did you guys never tell us you had your own channel man :o ? Glad i now know
The noises that shad made when he first saw the sword were like the ones when a dad gets a very personal present for christmas
tyranth is actually a legend his work never fails to impress. keep it up man
Great job, Tyranth. Nate and Tyranth are both excellent additions to the channel.
Honestly I don't even mind when shad steps back for a video anymore. Still love seeing Shad, and would be upset if he disappeared altogether not gonna lie, but I love Tyranth and Nates dynamic. They work so well together it seems so natural.
@@BigPanda096 Do you have any idea what happened to the other guys?
@@cheshire4856 Ben had to move on forever ago for family reasons, Oz and Shad butted heads too much for their sanity so Oz left so they could still be friends, Nathan is still on the channel just mustly behind the camera/editing, and I'm not sure what happened to... the girl and that one other guy whose names I can't remember. They was only on the channel for a couple months or so.
The happiness, giddiness and exitement in this video was absolutely infectious! Not to mention how awesome those cut tests looked!
This is gorgeous! I've modified several "tools " into styles I wanted. Cheap hatchets and axes are easy changed in to tomahawks or Norse type axes. BUY SOMETHING AND MAKE IT YOUR OWN!
Spanish cork axe...
You just need to be certain that the blade is made of a decent steel.
Hatchets mainly, some are made of crappy alloys, not carbon steel, cause those alloys are easier to cast.
@@carloshenriquezimmer7543 even crappy alloys should be functional enough right?
@@Kenicavus if it can chop wood, it can chop skulls.
@@Kenicavus the problem is that some of those alloys are just too soft for a thinner blade. Wood-spliting hatchets are wide wedges, battleaxes are slim blades.
having the original brand name is actually a charming quirk in my eyes
Agreed.
Agreed, don't they deserve some credit for making a great blade to start with?
Tyranth carefully explaining the falchion details.
Shad swinging the falchion, not paying any attention: SWISSH... SWOOOSSHH.. SWIIISH
One thing that I think is awesome with the new sword is you can go out and chop up brush with it, without feeling like your hurting a traditional sword .
And, if the blade breaks? Take the handle pieces off and put them on a new machete.
I mean it technically is a traditional sword, Just not a conventional one.
Way The hell better steal than anything those poor bastards back in the day would have had tho.
As far as breaking goes I've used that same machete for quite some work for a few years now, I'm not sure It can actually break, it bends sure but I think it's too thin to actually break under reasonable circumstances, I mean I've hit plenty of fences and iron bars whit mine and apart from chipping The damage has been relatively minimal.
I just love the continuous praise and the smile on Tyranth. The man did a wonderful job! He deserves it!
I wasn't too sure of how it would turn out but damn, that actually seems super nice! Very well done!
Tyranth presenting his creation with "here's all the the things that are wrong with it but that one part right there is perfect" was very relatable 😂
That's me, Every. Single. Time.
This was great, love seeing tyranth make a machete into a falchion, very cool crafting work.
Wow, Tyranth has a heck of a shop. Nice lathe work.
As a hobby smith, I really appreciate this video. It really shows how capable the Shadiversity team is!
It makes me wanna fire up my forge again. Thanks for the video!
I like that the manufacturer name stayed. It kind of gives a story to the sword.
IMO keeping the original makers (sellers) tag on the blade is a cool thing.
Just add: falchionized (modded) by Tyrant
I love seeing how Shad just literally lights up when he picks it up - not just the first time, but every single time. It is a beautiful piece of very functional art!
Always been more of a woodworker myself, but gotta appreciate that Lathe with there tyranth!
Love watching metalwork great job!
This is so cool. Seeing the handles pieces seemingly 'appear' from those blocks felt magical. I don't think about it often, but power tools are unbelievable in the hands of an expert. I have that same hand-held rotary tool and my first thought was 'Woah, look what it COULD be up to...'
Do you know the cannel inheritance machining? If not, i think you'll love it😂
@@CarlosGarcia-ze6rt I haven't heard of it. I'll have a look. Thank you.
Shad's reaction of pure joy and excitement was priceless.
The joy on Shad's face and in his voice when he starts to wield it speaks volumes to your work! Well done!!!!!
I like the makers mark remaining.
It's like a broadcast saying "Look what you can make out of a cheap but surprisingly functional machete!" 😄
Time and time again Tyranth has shown how amazing his craftsmanship is.
There are a few signs shad loves a sword he gets his hands on.
The first - if it meets his expecations for looks there is lamsot like this glint in his eye reminisant of a kid in a candy shop
The second - he does not want to stop playing around with it because it feels good.
The third and final sign - he is insatly i want to wear this i need a sacabard of some description.
This checked all the boxes and i must say looks fantastic and i cant wait for the next video showing the differnces between the 2 swords
Tyranth has really come into his own here, aced the build, and hit his stride and defined his place in the channel. I would love to watch more build videos like this.
These "How-to" videos are simply amazing in giving us ideas and improving our craft. Thank you!
This is pretty much THE Shadiversity sword for me now
Look at this crafty lad! Well done!
Falchions are my favorite sword so i was really matching the energy at the final result. Now i want to make a Falchete.
I've got to say, Nate, Shad, and Tyranth are almost at the level of the Grand Tour trio. They all work very well together, and I think bringing those two has really helped the channel grow in ways it really just couldn't have with Shad alone
Also amazing blade, I always really enjoy build videos
Shad was so excited 😂 Nice work, guys!
Seeing Shad so excited, so genuinely excited over a machete getting such an upgrade is awesome to see! Well done Tyranth!
Also, i love this. In general, I love singled edged swords like falcions, sabers, Messers.
One of my favorite videos! Top notch! Well done!
I have really been fascinated with the Falchion lately (just in my imagination) and y’all have brought it to life!
It would be cool if y’all brought this to a sword manufacturer and had a product line designed, but honestly it would be even COOLER if you could convince the original manufacturer of the machete to get into it! They did the work that provided this opportunity, it would be cool if a partnership formed!
A great Hurrah for Tyranth!
We need more videos like this; showing off some of the craftsmanship of the crew.
thanks a lot!! i was about to modify with regular hand tools an old machete from my yard in order to look closer to a falchion, this video gave me great ideas. excellent work !!
Great work from Tyranth. I loved the build video. I don't know why, but just seeing Shad spinning a sword around with a big smile on his face makes my day.
Video Idea:
A Castle Breakdown episode where you compare the different Disney castles throughout the world, and referencing the Disney movies associated with it (Disneyland in CA, Paris, and Hong Kong are Sleeping Beauty and Disneyworld in Orlando and Tokyo are Cinderella, and Shanghai is Enchanted). I think it would be cool to see you break them down as far as defensibility.
Honorable mentions would be the castle from Tangled and, outside of Disney, the castles featured in the Shrek movies.
Love the content!
Truper machetes deserve recognition, great tools for a good price, greetings from Mexico
Item gained:
Shadling's Chopper.
+1 dex
10% chance to inflict bleed on hit
"Hammered out of a blade recovered from a foolish and ill-equipped adventurer, the modifications turn a farmer's tool into a proper weapon"
Also, Shad you could probably auction that thing off to your Patrons.
No way in hell he's giving that thing up! XD
Definitely make a second one.
Then you can cross them over a matching shield.
It really does look professional. Well done!
so cool seeing Tyranth at work
Glad to see a Tyranth channel style video. Good work on the Falchete!
Absolutely my favorite channel on RUclips!!! Always watch your videos before I fall asleep lol.
The thing I love about only watching Shad's videos occasionally is that every time I come back, it looks like he's leveled up due to having a new piece of armor he's wearing.
I´m not machinist myself but after hours and hours of watching ToT, I cryed a little bit watching that fabrication LOL. That timely editing in 7:58 tho, had me laughing 🤣 Overall, nice job.
I was reading a post about how some pommels were slightly offset intentionally to make it more parallel to the of the hand part of the wrist joint. It was a fairly compelling argument.
Beautiful sword, love falchions
Thanks for getting rid of those dirty impersonation scammers comment reply bot accounts.
I hate scammers. I hope for a day where they find a way to force the scammer to serve 5 years in prison for each time they do it with no bail, no parole, 100% time served, no exceptions.
I just found out I’ve actually been subscribed to tyranth for years. Always love to see your work!
THAT is wonderful workmanship.
You guys have been knocking videos out of the park lately. I love seeing the crafting process.
The key differences I've always noticed between equivalent tools and weapons are in the balance and weight distribution. An axe made for felling trees can afford to be heavy and forward-balanced because it's purpose-made for cutting timber. It doesn't require the speed or maneuverability of an axe that's going to be used for offensive and defensive purposes in battle because it's specifically designed to function as a tool. A felling axe and a battle axe are essentially the same thing in form and function, it's just that they're engineered to be effective in very different circumstances.
So, you're telling me that Shad's videos are now featuring sword making and craftsmanship? Well, I'm more than glad that I clicked that subscribe video all those years ago. Love this!!!!
We need a dedicated Tyranthian Falcion test cut video! I'd happily watch 30 minutes of that thing slicing through everything short of space and time!
Man i really enjoy seeing the work tyranth puts in at the shop . Impressive
The way that pool noodle went to pieces.......I shivered
Man the content you guys are making lately is really next level stuff, I'm lovin it. With Shads extensive knowlege and Tyranths crafting skills its so fun just watching 2 guys mess around with swords and thinking up cool crap to make.
Tyranth has a MINI ANVIL!! That is so cute ♥
I watch this channel because you all seem like great dudes and I love the work you do. Been here for a while and it has been great to see the growth to the channel. Watching Shad's novels come out and dreams come true has been fantastic.
I love the idea of taking a nice machete and making it into a good value Falchion! super cool idea
Horizontal cuts on the pool noodle?
Now that's impressive!
This squire's workmanship merits the honor of its own SHABBARD!
Phenomenal work Tyranth. I haven't done a blade build in years, and this video made me itch to get back into the shop and do another one.
That smile. Shad got a new toy and he likes it
I don't know much about falchions, rapiers and katana are more my style, but am quickly becoming a fan because of your discussions and sword-crafting. Beautiful work and it looks to handle wonderfully.
'This is gorgeous.' That's exactly what I was thinking.
And once again I think I picked the wrong career.
Crazy to see what Tyranth could do with all those precision tools and stuff. Just imagine the people hundreds of years ago doing it with much less technology. Insane to think really.
Nice to see Shad so happy.
Well done video. Very nicely made falchion.
Excellent build. For the record, that kind of thin, distally tapered, spring-tempered machete is actually quite common in Latin America. They are especially useful for clearing through soft vegetation like vines and grasses, and the light weight and balance makes them easy to wield for hours.
That’s just really awesome.
Montages was the bees tits really epic and awesome editing too. Stepping it up boys, all hail the mighty Shalete
Lathe turning is just so satisfying to watch.
Shad swinging that Malchion like he just discovered True Level :P
Every Video i see about the Falchion i do fall in love with them more and more
Sofisticated engineering in knife design, according to knife makers guild.
I have a character who I eventually want to get a mythical messer/falchion and you guys' videos have really showed me the ins-and-outs of these types of swords. In particular, they are going to use a bastard messer (the reasons for which being highly thematic, coupled with my personal preference as the author/artist), so I really look forward to your two-handed falchion video.
That’s gorgeous. Good job.
Thank you so much for this tape! I grew to love falchions owing to this tape!
HOLY CRAP!! Tyranth you have OUTDONE YOURSELF, sir! That is fantastic work!! And may I say, you have a NICE metal shop!! I had no idea before this video that you had such skills. I'm really jealous; now I want my own home-made falchion. 🙂
Laser engraving on the blade with shads iconography would make that sword even more perfect!
Weapon smiths in the past be like: "Truss me, I'm an Engineer!"
12:55 Shad has a sword-gasm
Falchete, a blade used by the expeditionary forces of the Shadlands to carve through vegetation and foe alike
I really like seeing how proud Shad seems of his employees.
He did a good job. I hope RUclips would stop messing with you guys. I pray for a day Shad can give all his employees massive raises and Christmas bonuses.
The two Nathan’s do a great job too.
I’d support you guys if I could afford it. There are a couple RUclipsrs I’m planing to support when I make more money, and you guys are at the top of the list.
Thanks so much
Loved this video. Great work Tyranth!
THIS IS SO FRIGGIN AWESOME
Amazing work, really well done.
A Falchion is one of my favorite swords.
From this video I'm even more excited for the progress of this channel
I am so hurt from laughing from the blurred out sword. 😂
love the crafting videos! keep em coming!
ON THIS EPISODE TYRANTH BECOMES THE SHADIVERSITY BLACKSMITH AND FORGES A BADASS SWORD
I’m actually doing the same thing using an Ontario brand machete. It’s unsharpened a few inches past the grip, so I plan on drilling another pin hole through the tang to allow two handed use. I also gave it a clip point by cutting out a section on the tip of the spine with a cutoff wheel on and angle grinder.
Attention! I, Brittas boyfriend, am german style trained metal worker. If you use , Winkelschleifer ' and , Trennscheibe ' be carefull about heating up the steel , this can lower down the quality of blade.
@@brittakriep2938 I assume you’re talking about heat from the cutoff wheel? I took the blued metal off afterwards.
@@dumper87 : Well i am german, angle is Winkel, grinder is Schleifer, so the machine has the same name only translated. I assumed that that a , cut off wheel' must be a , Trennscheibe (cut away disc)' . When using a cutoff- or grinding wheel to long, the steel can become blue or nearly black, and in worst case the heat treatment becomes bad. But, If you are not an amateur in Metalwork, you surely know this. What i have forgotten: I am Brittas boyfriend, only using her Computer too.
I was thinking about this after Kevin from thehistorysquad mentioned someone else doing it. It turned out really well!
