As a person that works in the front line, you only press that button when you are in immediate danger and when you hear that call in every radio going off and the person in distress you will definitely be on the edge
I know this is a TV show but this is how situations like this should be handled. It was clear that the boy was in shock leading one to believe that the firearm being discharged was an accident and the kid had no intention off hurting anyone and was either un-aware the firearm was loaded or un-aware it was real and the massive response by police, whilst necessary, only causes further issues as it scares people leading people to think they are acting in self defence. Police need to recognize when people are in shock and act accordingly.....if police can be trained to follow leads and put a picture together for a criminal case then they can be trained to identify shock and put the dots together in situations like this.
Well, it clearly happened in the scene, the woman realized the kid had no further harmful intentions, and likely none at all, yet still acted a bit careful, which is natural. Also, the backup could only go off of what they are given, and it seems all they were given was the location, and an “armed young delinquent”. The swat response was the only real thing that was 100% unnecessary. But yes, you have a point, especially in America, judgement is supposed to be our strong suit. It is, in fact, a weakness.
That woman used to be a Social worker before joining the Police Service of Northern Ireland. I can see that she knows how to de-escalate the situation when the kid was scared. When her partner realized that this was a challenging situation, he warned their backup to hold their position and the same woman informed them to stay back. She managed to work through this and the gun was safely removed without any additional issues. What I saw was absolutely great Police Work. Her partner may have been thinking differently but he quickly learned of their situation and started rethinking once his partner told him to lower his weapon even though the kid was armed. The kid was scared... I am going to say... That was great Police Work. Nothing can top that. Not even in the United States. In the United States... The Police don't take any chances. I'm sorry... But I am amazed by how this was played out. Even though it was only a TV Show.
