- research - pick related colors and typography, designs - sketch and take your time putting story and emotion to the brand - dont follow design trends and drive it with an iconic design
The newest design trend is kinda disgusting to me I prefer the windows 7 ui over the windows 10 ui 3d logos are what I like, but I hate the simple oversimplified logos that were already perfect
As a person with no graphics experience, trying to design a logo for myself, these are some great things to think about (that I normally wouldn’t have).
Even 5 minutes of sketching can make such a difference, yet so few logo designers do it. Thanks for these video, they're a good reminder on what are the best practices in the industry, would love to see more videos where you go through the actual design process. Keep it up!
Hey Cosmin, I agree sketching is a great way to sometimes just stumble on potential routes and concepts that you can't really get by going straight into design software. I'm hoping to do more walkthroughs and design process videos in future :)
Great video full; sage advice. Additionally, with your speech mannerisms (accent, pacing, clarity), I would listen to you reading fast-food menus for 45 minutes and love it. Cheers!
Sometimes it may be a couple of weeks before I can find time to go through the comments, but I do read them all eventually. Thank you for your comment 🤘
Thank you. I know that my uploading of content can be a bit erratic as I often have really busy periods of client work. Comments like yours are what keep me uploading videos when I get the chance to do so.
If you are used to diving straight onto the computer, it can be difficult to get into sketching first. Try to introduce it as a regular thing and you should get used to it :)
It's easy to do complicated but it's hard to do simple. >>>> this is the great idea and information I've learn now. Great idea and Great concept to me as a graphic designer! please! more make more videos sir! (salute)
Respect...After watching your video you opened my eye's to things I was doing wrong, very insightful and knowledgeable..blessing to YOU and stay SHANTAST'IC..
The first thing I do is start to eat chocolate....then I sketch. Need more self discipline. But seriously, your advice to sketch first is a good one, because you can get ideas down really fast. By the time you hunt and peck to find the right PS brush, you may lose the best idea you ever had. Great video! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Your videos help me a lot to make this exciting road and sometimes difficult design path. Here you have a new subscriber :)
Good knowledge ! Do you have any advice for a brand that is already up and running but now as time passes realize that the brand logo doesn’t seem long jeopardy , would it be a good idea to jump appear with new brand logo out of no where ???
There are examples of brands completely changing their logo / branding. Usually though this is because they are trying to distance themselves from something or they are moving to target a new demographic. If you have a loyal following, it can be a good idea to educate your existing audience on why you are going to be changing the brand identity.
Hey, I can highly recommend Designing Brand Identity by Alina Wheeler, and Branding in Five and a Half Steps by Michael Johnson. You can find links to these and other books over on my Kit page - kit.com/pixelscol
hey, a really helpful video there, thank you for the information! but alongside watching your video, some question pop up in my head like "what should i ask on the research process?" or "who should i ask? should i ask the insider, the target audience or both? should i ask direct question or should i ask inderect question and assume the data by myself?" its a lot of question and i understand if you can't answer it, it might be an inspiration for a new content, but i just want to say thank you for creating this channel, keep it up! 😁
Can I ask you sir that why the Pi logo is different on the cap & the Tshirt that you are wearing in this? Why you aren't using your logo on your RUclips channel profile picture? How can I design a yellow color brand in China & France?(if that's the case) If yellow represents pornography & weakness in those countries, don't they have any brand that uses yellow? ( Am still confused that how yellow represents pornography in China?) Sorry if I asked something wrong 😢
The hat has my old logo and my shirt has my new logo. I just haven't gotten around to getting caps made yet with my new logo on them :) I should have realised this before I recorded that video :)
@ #1: how does one research an industry effectively? e.g. I'm doing a logo for a band and while I can look at bands they like, my research has consisted of google images' results, roughly in the same ballpark genre area (not entirely clear as they haven't finished a full release), and online mag articles of "50 best rock band logos". It doesn't feel like I'm tapping into the design zeitgeist of the industry and I don't have marketing test data to reflect what designs succeed more than others to make this easier (because it's also not that simple). My design is quite a bit different but follows the name of the band and they liked it.
Band logos are a different beast to business/cosporate logos (yes, bands are a business too). In the first instance, the fans will be attracted to the music, and so the logo should reflect the personality of the band and the genre that they are in. I think there is more freedom for band logos. Sounds like you are doing the right kind of research. At the end of the day, if the band likes it, and you feel it fits them then I say go for it.
@@RockYourBrand Oh great! Thanks for being so responsive! I did find an honours thesis about brand design where the fans picked one of four options. That gave some insight into how to arrange what I've already got.
It depends really on the type of business I'm doing the logo for, but generally, Google is always a good first start to get a lay of the land for the industry sector. I then look at industry magazines and social channels/groups for the sector to check out what their competitors are doing in terms of their branding. You can quickly spot trends which gives you a good indication of where you can differentiate your client's logo and brand. If possible, it can also be good to speak to existing customers of your client. Why do they buy from them, what do they like about dealing with the client? You can pick up some good nuggets of information there that can help you build your concepts for the logo. it isn't always possible to do this though. For example, your client may be a new startup, or the business they are in requires client confidentiality.
can i use any type of fonts ( paid or free) without licensing in my commercial projects to earn money ? i came to know that font licencing is must for paid fonts..what if i use paid fonts without license in my commercial logo design and deliver logo to client ? as a student i dont have enough money to buy a font license..please anyone help me.....
You cannot use a paid for font for personal or commercial work without purchasing a license. When it comes to free fonts, they are often licensed for free when use din personal projects and do not allow you to use them for commercial work. Always check the license that comes with the free font to check the conditions of the license.
I personally use a 12.9" iPad Pro right now. I did use to have a Wacom tablet which was great for working with on my PC/Mac but I wanted something that was portable and allowed me to do work on it as well.

I went on your website to have a look on your logo designs and sorry but I expexted more originality. I've seen something similar to the logos made for challenges in Feverr and 99designs...
hey there Ebony, there is nothing stopping you from having a coloured woman as your logo. You just need to make sure that the logo is legible at small sizes. So you may want to simplify the image or illustration. You could have two versions. A more detailed version for when your logo appears at large sizes, and a secondary version that is more simple for when your logo needs to appear at smaller sizes.
Oh no... A friend just made me a logo commission for their new food truck but they painted it all electric blue... What am I supposed to do with that now? XDD
It can be a really difficult process. I find it helpful to sometimes speak to another designer and ask them to look at what I've got so far if I get stuck. You can sometimes get enough feedback to give you some new avenues to explore.
