Thank you for the great presentation! I would put BMW in "Lettermarks" category. It as an abbreviation of "Bayerische Motoren Werke", on the other hand the logo itself is recognizable even without letters. :)
Just discovered your channel yesterday and found such good and unique content (already subscribed). It's a shame that you slowed down with your content lately, the world needs people like you. As a beginner what's an easy way how to create a symbol/emblem/letter out of different colors? I have no graphic design experience and was wondering if there was an easy way to do this?
Yes, crests are a type of logo. I usually include those under the banner of Emblem or Shield. I cover more on the types of logos in this live stream video. ruclips.net/video/kPD8RSsvPqc/видео.html
@@RockYourBrand I just wanted to say, great video but how do you know when to use what category for logo design. Sorry if it didn't come out right, I'm a beginner
Hi Daniel, Many times when i start a logo design project, I don't know what type of logo I am going to end up with. It is best to just start sketching out ideas for a logo and see what ideas work the best. Rather than starting off and saying "Okay, I am going to do a combination mark logo, or a wordmark". You will limit your thinking process doing it that way. When you start, let your mind be open to all possible logo categories :)
@@RockYourBrand Thanks, I've checked out your channel and your explanation is way better than most teachers, your knowledge is just what i needed to kick start my logo design career. You just got a new sub

Watched this twice and took notes on my second watch. I am curious how you go about deciding what particular grouping you might want to choose as fitting for the company and their industry? It makes sense you might want to be careful about doing a combination mark for a small company that hasn't had time to market their brand to a broad base and that if you're doing something like a large company that has a global brand you're probably gonig to lean harder on the symbol design, but what about the others?
I don't really set aside a specific logo style for businesses. The right one will present itself as I go through the research phases of a logo project. For one small business it could be a wordmark that is perfect for them, for another, an emblem. It all comes down to the audience, the product or service, the brand's story, the brand's history and so on. Every brand is different so the criteria for what category of logo will suit them best also changes :)
That makes sense. A junior CG artist marketing their name is going to have very different needs for their logo and their potential customer base than say an RPG start up. So like most things it comes down to the needs of the specific company, industry and brand. Thank you.
Hi, sir, I didn't understand the difference between "4. combination" and "5. emblems"! Otherwise, you explain well. If you got free time then please inform me.
TL;DR: Combination logos combine a symbol or icon with a wordmark, while emblem logos incorporate the brand name within a distinct shape or enclosure. Combination logos offer versatility and clear brand recognition, while emblem logos convey a sense of tradition and prestige. ------------------------------ A combination logo and an emblem logo are two different types of logo designs, each with their distinct features and characteristics. Here's a breakdown of the differences between them: Combination logo: A combination logo, as the name suggests, is a combination of two different elements - a symbol or icon and a wordmark or logotype. The symbol or icon represents the brand visually, while the wordmark typically includes the company or brand name in a unique and stylized font. The elements can be arranged in various layouts, such as side-by-side or with the icon above the text. Combination logos are popular because they convey both the brand's visual identity and its name, making them easily recognizable and memorable. An example is the Adidas logo with its trefoil or three-striped symbol and the name "Adidas"). Emblem logo: An emblem logo consists of a symbol, icon, or pictorial representation enclosed within a shape, such as a circle, square, or shield. The company or brand name is often incorporated within the emblem, making it an inseparable part of the design. Emblem logos tend to have a more traditional, classic, or prestigious feel, and they are often used by organizations, institutions, or brands that want to convey a sense of history, authority, or heritage. An example is the Starbucks logo with the mermaid inside a circular frame and the name "Starbucks" written around it.

Hey Jesse. I do plan on sorting out some live streams this year but I need to get my internet connection working a bit better as it doesn't like streaming at the moment :)
From your sketches, you will eventually end up with your logo concepts, and they will fall into a specific logo type category. You do not need to your concept(s) and make it work as a wordmark, symbol, combination mark and so on.

VERY HELPFUL..THANK YOU VERY MUCH ...MY QUESTION IS .. YOU SAY SYMBOLS FOR LARGE AUDIENCE FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES .. WHAT ABOUT REST OF TYPES.. I CONFUSE ABOUT WHICH TYPE I WILL BE USE
Hey Mahmoud, by using a symbol, it can be understood by the viewer even if they don't speak the language that the symbol originates from. If you were to create a wordmark, then there is a chance that the word can have very different meanings depending on which language you are reading it in. Here is a link to some examples of this: mentalfloss.com/article/31168/11-product-names-mean-unfortunate-things-other-languages
Hi Tomide, Thanks for watching and in answer to your question I'd say there are a few things: The simpler the design the more versatile the logo will be. The more elements and complexity you add to a logo the more difficult it will be to utilise it in different situations on screen and in print. Your logos should work in black and white as well as in colour. Also, try not to design a logo that follows current design trends as these will date very quickly and before you know it, you'll be needing to create a new updated version. Try to make your logo designs timeless. I hope that helps.
Thanks Col, i will try my best to make my logo simple and timeless. Col, please i will love to request that you mentor me in this aspect of graphic design. Please, i will be looking forward to hearing a good response from you. I can be contacted on tommydey@gmail.com

Im trying to work out a new logo for my city in India which has been chosen among a few other cities to be converted into a smart city. What kind of approach should i be looking at???
The first thing I'd be doing is researching the logos of other cities around the world. Especially other smart cities. Look to see if they have similarities and find out if there is an opportunity to make your logo different. I'd think you would probably be best off with a combination mark as you'll want to produce an icon or symbol, but also have the name of the city in there as well. Stay Creative! Col
Very clean and professional presentation, so great! I am thinking about tackling this issue with a logo(s) that will be easily placed in hundreds of places, multi-branding where each target audience is offered a different story (POV) to get them in the door. Have you ever delt with that, and what are your thoughts?
Hey Kevin, Thanks for watching and giving me feedback. It sounds like quite a complex scenario you have there but could be amazing if you pull that off. I've heard of brands using different messages to target a different buyer persona type, but it didn't go as far as creating different logos for each of them.
Great video! I think you narrowed it down quite well. I am going to be nit-picking here but I just wanted to add to your statement about wordmarks: They don't need to be in a typeface that isn't available anywhere else, but it's rather through their massive and consistent exposure that they will become proper to a brand (which is why you can have several wordmarks made with Franklin Gothic or Helvetica for that matter). These are generally the mostdifficult ones to sell to a client, as they don't get visually catching image but might first think "our name in a font? I could've done that myself". Only the smart ones will understand the potential of a simple wordmark. I'm done. Congratulations (by the way, your own logo is excellent)
I 100% agree with you there. I'll be up front and say that was my very first video and I may not have been 100% comfortable in front of the camera. In fact, I was petrified! I'm contemplating updating that video and I'll definitely include what you have said in your comment. Completely valid point. "our name in a font? I could've done that myself" that made me laugh because it is so true. Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.
You're welcome. You could leave it as it is as you don't appear petrified at all! As you obviously know what you are talking about, I was wondering if you would do a video about developing a style guide for logo usage. This is in my opinion a very tricky part that is neither taught nor really covered anywhere. I often explain my client that a logo will only take them to a certain pont. A good use of an average logo will work where a bad use will ruin any logo regardless of how well designed it is. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
+visualthings yeah, I have a lot of videos planned and slowly working my way through each area. Style guides, along with brand guideline creation is definitely something I will cover in future.
From my perspective, a pictorial logo is a logo that clearly shows something. E.g. a bird, an aeroplane, a bicycle. An abstract logo is just that, an abstract shape that doesn't resemble a specific thing.
Hi, like your videos and analysis. What do you think of logo designs that just appear intuitively literally pop out at you and then no matter what you do the one keeps coming back. It's like the logo design has taken over the idea all on its own. And some how just feels right. When that happens I go with it. But now watching your videos I'm now having doubts. Should I bring a second or outside opinion on them.
Great question. I find that the crucial part here is the research stage. if you've done extensive and good research before you start working on your concepts, then there is a good chance that your early designs will be exactly what is required. If I have read your post correctly, it looks like you've put the logo design to the side and tried to work on other ideas but that one idea keeps rising to the top. That to me sounds like you've hit on what could be the right concept. Getting an outside opinion is never a bad thing, as long as you are getting it from the right people. Ones that understand design and who you've given details of what the design brief was. It is natural to have doubts, but as I say, if you have put in all the groundwork then the chances are that your doubts are unwarranted :) Stay Creative! Col
Interesting. So would it be safe to say that a logo is considered BAD if it DOESN'T fit into any of these categories? For example, a typical shield shape (🛡️) with the business name inside (Camp Nowhere), and then a symbol on top, like a silhouette pine tree (🌲) ... And then surrounding everything, a vine-like boarder with a circular shape.
Hey Frenly, A logo isn't necessarily bad if it doesn't fit neatly into a specific category. What i would say is that if you have too many elements from the different types of logo, things start to get very busy and you can run into problems with hierarchy and legibility :)
Rlly helps a lot, rlly inspired me as I didn't know wat to make for my RUclips logo, but now I think I could just make a simple lettermark (I was trying to make an emblem which was complicated and didn't turn out very well)
Yeah, start with something that will do the job in the early stages, and give yourself some time to create an emblem design that you can use later. It takes the time pressure off you a bit :) Thanks for watching. Stay Creative! Col
Hey Bryan, Yes, I could see that being something that you can do. Lettermarks tend to be used when the name of the company is quite long and it needs to be shortened down.If you then wanted to combine that with a symbol then there is nothing to stop you doing that. What I would say though, is that the Lettermark is usually all about simplicity. By adding a symbol into the mix you are complicating it a bit. Stay Creative! Col

Yes, there is nothing stopping you from using a combination mark for a startup :)

Hi, sir,
I didn't understand the difference between "4. combination" and "5.
------------------------------
A combination logo and an emblem logo are two different types of logo designs, each with their distinct features and characteristics. Here's a breakdown of the differences between them:
Combination logo:
A combination logo, as the name suggests, is a combination of two different elements - a symbol or icon and a wordmark or logotype.
Emblem logo:
An emblem logo consists of a symbol, icon, or pictorial representation enclosed within a shape, such as a circle, square, or shield.

That to me sounds like you've hit on what could be the right concept.
Getting an outside opinion is never a bad thing, as long as you are getting it from the right people. Ones that understand design and who you've given details of what the design brief was.
It is natural to have doubts, but as I say, if you have put in all the groundwork then the chances are that your doubts are unwarranted :)

Hey Frenly,
A logo isn't necessarily bad if it doesn't fit neatly into a specific category. What i would say is that if you have too many elements from the different types of logo, things start to get very busy and you can run into problems with hierarchy and legibility :)
if a long video is a brand mark, this explanation should be the logo of it (in terms of identifying something briefly, clearly and wisely).
Thank you!
This helped a lot :)
Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to leave your comment :)
What would the current BBC logo fit into? Combination? Plus my own 'Super 8 blog' logo is probably combination, basic as it is
great explanation sir, today learned a lot of things about logo
Rlly helps a lot, rlly inspired me as I didn't know wat to make for my RUclips logo, but now I think I could just make a simple lettermark (I was trying to make an emblem which was complicated and didn't turn out very well)
Yeah, start with something that will do the job in the early stages, and give yourself some time to create an emblem design that you can use later. It takes the time pressure off you a bit :)
Thanks for watching.

Really appreciate that :D
Pixels Ink :)
Could a combination also be a letter mark and a symbol?
Hey Bryan,
Yes, I could see that being something that you can do.
