41:48 Fun fact about 2099's suit: it was an old costume Miguel had to celebrate day of the dead in Mexico, and a follower of Thor gave him a web cape (which isn't in the game obviously), which is the in universe reason why he has a skull instead of a spider
35:23 I remember when this suit was first revealed and can give a little bit of context for those wondering why they ditched it early on. You can basically blame everything on how Marvel handled Ben post-Clone Conspiracy. 1) Clone Conspiracy turned Ben into the new Jackal with a fresh design that looked way cleaner. 2) Ben had been pushed HARD into being a villain, so to immediately pivot back into hero work felt like Marvel was wish-washy. 3) Kaine’s time as Scarlet Spider was generally well received for expanding on his character beyond being an edge-lord, so fans were pissed we weren’t getting a story dedicated to him. 4) the original promo image for this suit was…not good. It showed the creases of Ben’s face under the mask with a derpy looking smile. It looked bad. Plus, this also came post-Spider Gwen, when artists started getting more creative with Spider themed costumes and this came off as very generic.
TLDR: The suit itself became the symbol for all the stuff people hated about Ben Reilly at the time and Marvel wanted to distance themselves from all the criticism. Like the classic Scarlet Spider suit, I think the team here did a great job improving it by adding some simple textures, seams, and line work so it doesn’t look so simple. It wouldn’t look nearly as good if it was a flat texture like it was in the comics.
2:03:40 I actually would listen to a Marvel phase 4 discussion with the two of you. I’m critical of phase 4, but I’m in the same boat where I don’t think it was nearly as terrible as everyone thinks.
