      Yeah that's one of my favorites from that era, probably because John Hughes wrote great wholesome movies back then, but I had a massive crush on Mary Stuart Masterson in that movie. I was always mad she only did a couple other big movies after that. Heaven Help Us, At Close Range, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Benny & Joon were all good too, but after 1991 she just sort of disappeared off the face of the planet and I never saw her again.

      @@grizzlywhisker, "Benny and Joon" was 1993 and if you compare her filmography to Lea Thompson it reads about the same. She was in "Five Nights at Freddy's" in 2023 so you can still see Mary Stuart Masterson in films on the big stage today. Cry crocodile tears if you want, but I won't feel sorry for you.
      What is odd to me is not that Lea Thompson has more famous roles. What amazes me is that I still think of her defining role was "Some Kind of Wonderful" and that is because her character was so powerful even if the rest of the movie seemed wrong. The great car for the date, the stage for the conversation, etc.
      It doesn't matter. She sees her friends as useless, her boyfriend as useless and her date as crazy about her and then takes the dive anyway. This defines her in my mind and that is coming from a little boy who saw her first in the theatre for "Jaws 3-D" so I've known her career. The movie does not make my favorites list and yet even I know the younger sister and Lea Thompson got the roles of a lifetime in that movie. So did the father. I love how the sister says "he's saving it for me," which is exactly how a girl that age would respond to the unbelievable idea of her father being amazing.
      4th place John Hughes
      has 10; 5 on my favorites list
      1) The Breakfast Club (1985) #49
      2) National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) #86 SERIES
      3) Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) #135
      4) Weird Science (1985) #189
      5) Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987) #284
      These did not make my top 370 favorite movies.
      6) Pretty in Pink (1986)
      7) Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
      8) Sixteen Candles (1984)
      9) Home Alone (1990)
      10) She’s Having a Baby (1988)

    Just saw ‘some kind of wonderful’ for the first time. Very disappointed at lea’s misused talent. The movie could have been a great movie about her dating a guy under her status and having to defend the relationship but instead the whole movie wastes your time leading to ONE date and then she decided she wants to be alone. What a bore and missed opportunity.

      @@Nazaba09 _"I much prefer 'pretty in pink'..."_ ...??? Can't tell if you're being truthful or sarcastic. If you are being truthful, it's strange to me that you say that cause if you really take a look at both films, they are essentially the same. The only thing that differs is the trio of main characters - _'Pretty In Pink':_ two guys, one girl. _'SKOW':_ two girls, one guy. The storylines are very similar (of course, each with it's own specific differences) so, to hear you say you prefer one over the other seems a bit odd to me. I love both those films but, I always thought _'SKOW'_ got the short end of the stick with most people. They seem to put it down in various ways and ultimately (if one thinks about it) it's only because it's slightly different from a pop culture standpoint when compared to _'PIP'._

    • @Nazaba09
      @Nazaba09 4 года назад +1

      River Of Blacklights I can see how you would think that, but SKOW builds up to ONE single date. ‘Pretty in pink’ doesn’t waste our time like that. Andie and Blaine become a couple quick and the movie is about how they navigate being a couple & the pressures being from different social classes. I’m a screenwriter and I watched ‘some kind of wonderful’ because I wanted to see the male POV of a ‘pretty in pink’ or a ‘she’s all that’ or ‘a walk to remember’. Those movies show what the GIRL has to go though, but not the guy. This movie was recommended to me because it’s supposedly from the guys point of view, but how can I write a movie from a guys point of view if he only ever goes on one date with the person and it has no social ramifications?

    • @RiverOfBlacklights
      @RiverOfBlacklights 4 года назад +5

      @@Nazaba09 _'PIP'_ builds up to one single night - Prom Night - and for the record, I don't think _'SKOW'_ "wastes" the viewers time. Obviously, _'SKOW'_ *HAD* to differ in *some* way to _'PIP'_ or else what would be the point in making the film if it's only going to be an exact cut & paste job?
      Also, you don't think there were ramifications, social or otherwise? Really? So his putting his friendship in peril with his best friend wasn't enough? Or how about the fact that Amanda's boyfriend wants to beat him up simply cause she's going out with him? Or the fact that he's spending all his college money on one girl/date to impress her despite the fact that his future is at risk?
      You don't consider those to be ramifications? I mean that "one date" was enough to really screw him over. Not to mention, the negative ramifications to Amanda and even Watts as well. There's plenty of ramifications, just like in _'PIP'_ and if you compare them together, both films have plenty of similar ramifications for their respective "love triangles"...
