Where we live in Canada pre-made and processed foods are over 75% of what is on the shelves at the grocery store, containing fewer nutrients and lots and lots of chemicals. Buying real food, like fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, etc. is very costly. @@cinnamon8884 We prefer produce grown without heavy chemical use (herbicide, insecticides etc.) so growing our own provides this for us. Also, home grown is not packaged in plastic, in our grocery store almost everything is packaged in plastic.
It's difficult to say how much that would all cost here in Melbourne, Australia. I usually shop every couple of days rather than every 2 weeks as I am close to shops. I would spend AUD$150-180 per week on grocery items, including cleaning products. I grow herbs and a few veg, especially Spring-Autumn.
- Depending where I shop, our total with inflation would range anywhere between $50 - $80 I'd say. 20lb bag of rice ranges between $8 - $12 USD on average alone, papaya is $3 - $5, chips $1 - $5, detergent $1.25 - $8, ect. 13:00
I honestly don't know how much we spend on groceries each week. I'm feeding a family of 2 parents and 3 young adult/college kids. Today I spent $54 at Sam's club to get 12 english muffins, 2 pounds of breakfast sausage, 3 pounds cottage cheese, 3 pounds of bacon, 2 baguettes, 4 pounds of carrots, and coleslaw mix. I was prepping breakfast sandwiches to stock our freezer for grab and go sandwiches. My husband spent $150 at the store a few days ago.
We grow 95% + of our fresh food and prob 60-80% of ALL of our overall food, being plant-based and we still spend around £35 (very similar amount in euros) a week week on food... Mostly chocolate, Coffee, Oils, Rice, flour and.a few other luxury items. 😊 You guys could probably grow heaps of chillies fairly easily out there - we love having an abundance of homegrown chillies here, use them so much more now 🌶Great video - thank you✌🌿
Great video! I love seeing practical standard activities in other parts of the world. Like grocery shopping. Regarding stock in the village by the ferry, can't someone there notify you when no stock has come? I heard bananas and chocolate chips.... Should you have a blender: slice the banana, freeze it, then blend till smooth and then spoon in some chocolate chips. An ice cream favourite of mine. 😊
Yes, we should check better before going haha ;) we lived here for so long without internet or phone reception we're still not used to just quickly calling or texting to ask or check for stuff haha. Hmm yes for the banana icecream! Been thinking of doing that!
For some reason the last time you guys went shopping I thought you went to Sumatra not another Island there. So cute to see the children at the market!
20 to 30.000 rupiah is my daily food /grocery bill here in South East Java . That includes 1/2 kilo of chicken or kilo of fish if available , "often get fish off friends if they've had a good catch " vegetables and fruit . 5 kilo's of rice every 2 weeks plus extras , chillies , garlic , tomatoes , onions , spices , flour , tea , sugar ect . all up 5-600,000rp for 10 days /2 weeks for 3 people . About the same as what you spend . I was spending 2-3 million rupiah , $2-300 dollars per week back in Australia to feed 4 adults for a week . Food is a lot cheaper but the local wages are a lot less than in western countries . Average wage here is about 100,000rp a day , $9/$10 Australian for most jobs , fisherman , builder , labourer , shop keeper etc , I tried growing vegetables here but the soil is to salty and sandy being so close to the ocean .
So interesting and informative! Here in Hawaii at least we don't have to travel 1.5 hours by boat each way to get basic groceries, but definitely do understand the problem of what is or is not available locally. Here, Amazon is sadly a necessary evil! Thank you for sharing your shopping trip!

I shop at Winco which is a very nice but inexpensive store in OR and those groceries may have cost 50-70$ depending on the brand of snacks and whether things were in season or not. So double to triple the amount.
Well I wished someone is taking a video/picture of you carrying all those stuffs (including a bag of rice) in a tiny motorcycle :D. And can't live in Indonesia without eating goreng2-an (fried banana). Indonesian mango is the best! Love this video!
I really love it when you have a new video. At the end, you were eating a Mango. It must be a different kind because it's so big & orange meat? My mouth is watering now...(Whenever I see one eating a fruit, I would just think of saving the seed to plant it. Have you thought about it? I have an apple tree which I planted out of a seed. In Oakland CA for 2 people we probably spend $250+ per week on food from the grocery store and farmers market. Prices have gone up a lot over the last 3 years! But we also love to eat so don’t worry about it too much 😊 I’m curious: is it customary to bargain in the markets and stores in Siberut? Or do you just pay the set price?

Yeah,...we couldn't buy a 25 lb bag of organic rice alone here in the US for double that price!
😱😱
cheaper but limited in what is available. I like how you can catch your own fish. Distance just to get groceries would bother me.
Ever consider growing chilli? 🌶️ it’s very easy in the tropics and you can harvest quite a lot from one plant :) 🌱 but you probably know this and are already doing it! 😅 ps: love your videos!
Yes we are growing chili already haha :) but we don’t have enough yet.
In Oakland CA for 2 people we probably spend $250+ per week on food from the grocery store and farmers market. Prices have gone up a lot over the last 3 years! But we also love to eat so don’t worry about it too much 😊
I’m curious: is it customary to bargain in the markets and stores in Siberut? Or do you just pay the set price?
No we don't really bargain here. It does happen in the big souvenir and food markets in the mainland but not here ;)
Oh I miss Indonesian food and cabe! xxx
Hahaa yes! And we miss ice cream and pizza hahaa 😂
