I did appreciate that when 16 was rebuilt by 21 in FighterZ, they kept him true to the original character, including the fact that he still sacrificed himself and it still _meant_ something.

So you mean to tell me, that Dr. Briefs never once did a backup during the many hours he spent tinkering with A16's repairs. Android 16 is the one character that should be able to return without Dragon Balls and that, ironically is why he won't.
I feel like it wouldn't have been 16 if they bought him back like that, he is more like a copy than the 16 they knew. I know it's kinda stupid to think so, essentially they are the same with the only difference would be that the backup would lack his memories after he was fixed, but it just wouldn't be 16 in my opinion. (Perhaps that's how the cast feels or even Toriyama and that's why he never returned?) Though in FighterZ I quite liked 21 bringing him back cause it was the first time she was meeting 16 and also how 16 really drove the point across that he wasn't the Z fighter's 16, but just a backup, it made it quite tragic.
I always thought it was a given; Bulma took out the bomb and made a back up of his CPU. I mean, seriously, what kind of genius who's careful enough to remove a bomb doesn't make backups of all essential software? A bad one, that's what kind.
I don't really agree with the whole "It just wouldn't be him" thing. Like, how many days did 16 have in between when he was fixed and the Cell games? It's not like he went through some major experience during that time that changed his character in any way. Hypothetically, if they had shut off 16 before the cell games and uploaded the backup into a duplicate 16 body, the backup would have done the exact same thing during the time. Then again, I'm never going to see the logic behind why Shenron couldn't have fixed the original circuit board.
What if Goku found out Android 16 wanted to murder him? Then went out of his way to get professor Briefs to rebuild him and stronger than he ever was...
I imagine if Dr. Gero attempted to re-program Android 16's love of birds out of him he would've gotten this reply: "Cause I'm as free as a bird now... And this bird you cannot change... No, no, I can't change... ain't no way I can change..."
I don't think that 16 "needs" more as much as he "deserves" more. In the entire Android and Cell arcs, 16 was the heart of the group while 17 was the determination and 18 was the logic. Over the course of the Cell arc he even managed to determine that his desire to kill Goku wasn't his alone, and instead decided to help the Z warriors. That, in itself, was a wonderful thing, but the way he went out, the sacrifice he made so that Gohan would go SSJ2 was literally the greatest contribution he made to the group. At the end of the Abridged episode 60 part 3, I cried seeing him sitting under that tree, the birds landing on him, and that halo above his head. He got his reward. To wish him back would've cheapened his sacrifice, and dishonored his memory. I just love that people are putting him into games and stories, giving 16 the love he deserves, and the fact that both 17 and 18 are living their lives in peace is just a wonderful tribute to his memory.
16 was definitely stronger than 17 and 18. Since they don’t loose energy, other than wear, 17 had full power when faxing Imp. Cell, and he got stomped. After 16 stepped in there was a slight but definite edge against Cell.
Couldn't androids 17 & 18 get stronger because they were still mostly humans. I think android 16 was stuck at his current power level until he had some reprogramming

The Great Aspie He probably would have to give up his wrongdoings, mostly because he wasn’t strong enough to fight the Z Fighters. He’d also have to give up his hatred for Goku for his own sake. Assuming he’s not killed by Cell, he’d probably just go into obscurity since he’s actually quite weak.

Namely Gero is the only one who could possibly build a tracking device to find 17 and 18 which since Cell can't sense energy from them it would greatly speed up the searching processes. Plus I think Gero would be willing to help since this is his best chance to kill Goku and he'll get to see his ultimate creation.

16 was my favourite android. He was just so calm, kind and patient. And when his siblings got in trouble he did everything to try and help them. 16 was just cool. I miss him... So I really enjoyed the picture you guys drew of him in the afterlife surrounded by birds. It just made me feel better.
I like seeing Masako talk about what the human 16 would have been like, really makes me hope we get to see that what if Goku meets the Gero's son instead of Bumla. Part of me would love to see a some kind of Dragonball Super adaption of the FighterZ story. It would be fun to see 21 become part of the story. I would change things like it would be interesting if 21 makes 16 or wishes 16 to come back as a cyborg like 17 and 18 allowing him to become much stronger like 17 and 18 did. flush out 21's history like is she some kind of clone of Gero's wife with her memories, how did the clone upgrade it's self after Gero's death. Like She seem to mostly spliced her self with Buu or did she make a wish to turn her self into a human Buu hybrid.

As long as we're talking about the tragedy of 16 not going on to Heaven can we talk about how the afterlife really sucks in dragonball? Unless your a great marshal artist you lose your body and become a cloud, and are left to wonder empty fields with nothing in them hoping to run into people you know. And more importantly King Kia has confirmed being dead is definitively worse than being alive. Being freed of a mortal body doesnt lead to a peaceful blissful experience undeterred by a bodys aches or sufferings, instead it means living like Barbosa on pirates of the Caribbean, things feel different, the air isnt as sweat, food doesnt taste as good. And more tragically theirs nobody to meet or grow closer to in dragon ball heaven. Angel's like Whis youll never see, Supreme Kia wont ever be taking your audience more than likely, and even King Yemma is quick to send you on your way.
The real reason he won't come back is Toriyama's terrible at keeping track of characters who have had a *major* effect on the plot and aren't named Goku, Vegeta, or Piccolo; there's no chance for one with an incidental effect.
I think a filler episode showing 17 and 18 visit a grave set-up for 16 would be cool. In the episode, Goku would realize that 17 sacrificed bringing back his brother to save the universe, with the earth/namekian dragonballs not being powerful enough to get the job done.

What if Chichi conceived just before Raditz arrived on Earth? What if Frieza listened to Goku? Part 2 What if Future Goku Survived the Heart Virus? What if Raditz was Accidentally Entered Goku’s Space Pod and Came to Earth With his brother?
1. Raditz would fight Goku and Piccolo at Kame House, and if Krillin and Master Roshi help out a bit, the Full-Nelson Special Beam Cannon goes off and kills Goku and Raditz. The whole thing about the other Saiyans coming to Earth is still there. Piccolo trains by himself, getting slightly stronger. The battle is pretty close to what happened in the original, and Goku arrives. However, without Gohan being strong enough to buy time for the Spirit Bomb, Vegeta kills Goku and Yajirobe, and destroys the planet.
3. If Future Goku survives his Heart Virus, Vegeta and him will get stronger due to Goku being a motivation to Vegeta. They fight the Androids, and Goku actually can beat them. Cell is actually still lurking around. But Kami warns Goku and the others, and they train to find and beat them. The Buu arc happens, and there is no Majin Vegeta because Vegeta doesn't feel the need. Babidi is defeated and Buu isn't hatched. In the Beerus arc, Buu will not anger Beerus, so Beerus just gives up and leaves. Because Shenron can still only give one wish, Sorbet and Tagoma cant revive Frieza. The U6, Goku Black, and TOP arcs do not happen. Uub is not born, and Goku just remains with his family. Goku and Vegeta don't gain as big of a friendship as they usually had.
Android 16 is to Dragon Ball what Leomon is to Digimon: no matter the version of the character that shows up...he's always destined to die in one shape or another haha
As much as I really want to see 16 again, I understand that the permanence of his death is immeasurably important. I don't think the entire Gohan SSJ2 scene would've had as much impact that it did if he did get revived, even if were far later on after the fight with Cell.
I really hope DBZA does the Nappa thing with 16. Bringing him back as an unseen side character who dispenses wisdom where Nappa dispenses comedy. Then again, that final image of 16 in heaven with a halo (signifying that he HAS a soul) surrounded by birds was one of the most tasteful and well done moments in what has been an already EXCELLENT series.
The fan series Dragon Ball Multiverse actualy did a universe where cell didn't show up in the Android saga. It was entertaining, if anyone wants to read it's chapter 60 and 62.
Gohan wouldn't have snapped, and eventually been killed by Cell. Cell would kill everyone else and wreak havoc on the universe until Beerus wakes up. Or until Dabura catches him off guard with stoner spit. But assuming Buu's ship isn't destroyed, Babidi could possibly use Cell to revive Buu. Then Babadi would wreak havoc, because Goku couldn't convince Buu to betray Babadi.
I've come up with a What If that I created because of your What If Raditz Turned Good series. It's called What If The Destruction of Planet Vegeta had been found out back when Raditz came to earth. A mouthful title, but it rewrites the entire DB storyline for the better.

What if Android 16 woke up with 17 and 18 in trunk's timeline. With Goku gone Android would have to find a new purpose in his existence. Maybe he would find his answer in Future Gohan....
Great video as always masako, android 16 has always been One of my favourite characters in Dbz in particular for his background story and as kid i was really shocked when he was destroyed but with time i understood that his dead was the key to kill cell like the krilin's One in namek's saga. I think that maybe he could have been revived in original timeline in a similar way freezer was revived in dbs : wishing his body to shenron and then rebuild him or in the future let Bulma reprogram 16 without his main mission (this One could be intersting in the what if "what if Gohan survived" part 3). I have also some ideas for a what if: what if Mr Satan was trained by Master Roshi when he was young and learned to control Ki energy? What if Goku had an high power level when he was a baby? What if Goku and vegeta wished back Planet Vegeta and Saiyan Race? What if Goku unlocked UI in the final battle against Kid Buu?
Man, I have to admit that this got me. 16 is so well beloved and I’m currently running his training missions in XV2 and enjoying them like a fine wine. He gets so little love and it truly is tragic!

masako, you should do a what if scenario based on toriyama's original ideas for the andriod arc prior to cell creation (like what if cell never came like you said, or even what if android 17 and 18 never woke up) since it would be interesting to see how it would work out if toriyama had his way (even though it not always a good thing considering how buu arc turned out to be). or you could do a what if scenario if 16 is still around after cell games (whenever he got rebuild or even ended up surviving) like how it would affect buu arc and even super if he still alive...well more active since he's a robot, but you get the point.
happy birthday android 16!!! :3(would love to see more of his/gero's past with android 21 if she ever get's added to canon as i loved their interactions and thought it handled 16 being brought back well.) while i still find the explanation for not being wished back not believable(his "brother" android 8/arale got blown up when buu destroyed earth but are still around and grandpa gohan probably should've encountered/told goku about bardock and gine at some point in otherworld.) i understand the reason as he wants to stay in peace as he left knowing his friends/mother in fighterz were in good hands to protect the world as i always loved how he's implied to be why for as powerful as they are 17 & 18 aren't trigger happy like in the bad future with their comraderie.
When they first introduced 17 in Super, I knew as soon as it was mentioned what he did that it was a reference to 16 and his way of honoring his "brother" after death. That said, it would be interesting (and nice) to see a painting or something of 16 by Gohan, 17, or 18 in one of their homes somewhere, preferably Gohan's or 17's.
I think the difference between Trunks' 17 & 18 is the fact that he told the Z fighters about the android attack and they trained and were prepared for it, they even went to meet them. Despite the fact that they couldn't sense energy. If they hadn't been so close it would've taken them much longer to arrive, Ergo 19 and 20 would've had time to leave and imagine they catch them on their departure, without the extra training I'm fairly certain the clown would've stomped all over the Z Fighters. I think the way it would've played out is Kami would've told Piccolo something is amiss and to go check it out and Piccolo would've telepathically called for help before giving cause help took too long to arrive. In the mean time Gero would've had plenty of time to return to his lab and be himself to further program a "Kill all the Z Fighters" inside 17 and 18, instead of being rushed to wake them up. That would make a huge difference on their behavior, that said, 17 and 18 would've rebelled against Gero, all the while, Clown-droid would've been destroyed albeit later by Vegeta, Goku already dead from heart attack which is why Bulma makes a huge deal out of it with Trunks in the future. And since nobody was prepared for 17 and 18, when they came the story became that, two androids, and nobody was alive to say 19&20 existed which is why I think Trunks never heard anything about it. I don't think 16 had anything to do with 17 and 18's personality, by everything I've just said it's just cause Gero had less time to code them(also less time to dispose of 16 by the same account). Birds are pretty cool tho.
I am so glad someone finally did an analysis of this. In a way, 16 was THE most profound character in all of Dragon Ball. Not just for his own development, but also for the not so obvious impact he had on others, and the fact that his demise was so FINAL. What makes this a candidate for most profound, is that this wasn't even a human or mortal character. The character had sentience, but at the same, not completely it's own agency.

Hey MasakoX I've got an interesting what if for you: What if Vegeta used the Dragon Balls to revive planet Vegeta and the Sayian race? Maybe you could do a deep dive on what could happen depending on when he revived them and what the effect on the story would be not only with him obtaining the Dragon Balls (in other words who would he kill for them) and how the Sayians impact the events?
16's influence is what helped turn 17 and 18 good. He was only woken up by them because the events of gero waking them up were different, due to the z fighters chasing them. And the only reason he was getting chased was the z fighters already knew because trunks told them... So this explains a couple timeline changes.

I'd say the combination of 16s mellow nature and their encounter with Cell was probably what shaped the 17 and 18 of the main timeline. 16 was permissive, but generally not encouraging them to do terrible things and Cell gave them something they didn't have until the end of their lives in Future Trunks timeline: showing them what it felt like to be powerless, to be in danger. To be the victim hoping someone will save YOU. Those experiences made a mark on their psychology, I'd think. Plus... They also didn't have 20 years with their primary mission (Kill Goku!) unable to be completed and being the most powerful things on Earth by several orders of magnitude. Like Miracleman/Marvelman remarks about his former sidekick "I have to wonder what a child with all that power and nobody to tell him 'no' might grow up to be."
U have inspired me to bring 16 back to life in my fanfic I have his son rebuilt as an android in the afterlife (Not gonna explain plot here lol) with Dr. Gero but I know a way 16 can be brought back actually two ways!
I would have really appreciated it if Gohan in the Tournament of power would've used 16's hell flash as a move to finish someone off. It would be nice to have a little nod to his remembrance.
Even though bringing 16 back would ruin the importance of his death. I still really much miss the guy he is one of my favorite db characters of all time, just hoped he would comeback again since nobody remembers him in super not even gohan who was touched in the heart by 16, gohan never mentions him again. My peace is for android 16 to be remembered by his fellow androids or the z fighters in super as well. Without his final words gohan wouldn’t have snapped and unlocked his potential to defeat cell.
This kind of makes me want an OVA where like Bulma rebuilds 16. But 16 goes and sees how everyone is getting along and sees how 17 and 18 are and decides to destroy himself, either through self destruction or just plain powering off

It was more then a slight advantage, the only reason 16 couldn't beat cell is because cell could regenerate, making any damage he did pointless.
I has always been under the impression that 16 was at least strong enough to kick imperfect cell's ass. (He's almost as strong as Semi-perfect Cell.)
Just make a good filler episode in Super where 17 & 18 are the main focus and the bring up fond memories of 16.

Namely Gero is the only one who could possibly build a tracking device to find 17 and 18 which since Cell can't sense energy from them it would greatly speed up the searching processes. Plus I think Gero would be willing to help since this is his best chance to kill Goku and he'll get to see his ultimate creation.
I always figured that after Gero finished working on 19, he had the 'android' convert him afterward.

Part of me would love to see a some kind of Dragonball Super adaption of the FighterZ story. It would be fun to see 21 become part of the story. I would change things like it would be interesting if 21 makes 16 or wishes 16 to come back as a cyborg like 17 and 18 allowing him to become much stronger like 17 and 18 did. flush out 21's history like is she some kind of clone of Gero's wife with her memories, how did the clone upgrade it's self after Gero's death. Like She seem to mostly spliced her self with Buu or did she make a wish to turn her self into a human Buu hybrid.

Unless your a great marshal artist you lose your body and become a cloud, and are left to wonder empty fields with nothing in them hoping to run into people you know.
And more importantly King Kia has confirmed being dead is definitively worse than being alive. Being freed of a mortal body doesnt lead to a peaceful blissful experience undeterred by a bodys aches or sufferings, instead it means living like Barbosa on pirates of the Caribbean, things feel different, the air isnt as sweat, food doesnt taste as good.
And more tragically theirs nobody to meet or grow closer to in dragon ball heaven. Angel's like Whis youll never see, Supreme Kia wont ever be taking your audience more than likely, and even King Yemma is quick to send you on your way.

The real reason he won't come back is Toriyama's terrible at keeping track of characters who have had a *major* effect on the plot and aren't named Goku, Vegeta, or Piccolo; there's no chance for one with an incidental effect.

1. Raditz would fight Goku and Piccolo at Kame House, and if Krillin and Master Roshi help out a bit, the Full-Nelson Special Beam Cannon goes off and kills Goku and Raditz. The whole thing about the other Saiyans coming to Earth is still there. Piccolo trains by himself, getting slightly stronger. The battle is pretty close to what happened in the original, and Goku arrives. However, without Gohan being strong enough to buy time for the Spirit Bomb, Vegeta kills Goku and Yajirobe, and destroys the planet.
3. If Future Goku survives his Heart Virus, Vegeta and him will get stronger due to Goku being a motivation to Vegeta. They fight the Androids, and Goku actually can beat them. Cell is actually still lurking around. But Kami warns Goku and the others, and they train to find and beat them. The Buu arc happens, and there is no Majin Vegeta because Vegeta doesn't feel the need. Babidi is defeated and Buu isn't hatched. In the Beerus arc, Buu will not anger Beerus, so Beerus just gives up and leaves. Because Shenron can still only give one wish, Sorbet and Tagoma cant revive Frieza. The U6, Goku Black, and TOP arcs do not happen. Uub is not born, and Goku just remains with his family. Goku and Vegeta don't gain as big of a friendship as they usually had.
Indigex I think I prefer my scenario of No. 1, because everything is consistent until the Android Arc.

I really hope DBZA does the Nappa thing with 16. Bringing him back as an unseen side character who dispenses wisdom where Nappa dispenses comedy. Then again, that final image of 16 in heaven with a halo (signifying that he HAS a soul) surrounded by birds was one of the most tasteful and well done moments in what has been an already EXCELLENT series.
The fan series Dragon Ball Multiverse actualy did a universe where cell didn't show up in the Android saga.

What if android 16 survived the cell games
Gohan wouldn't have snapped, and eventually been killed by Cell. Cell would kill everyone else and wreak havoc on the universe until Beerus wakes up. Or until Dabura catches him off guard with stoner spit. But assuming Buu's ship isn't destroyed, Babidi could possibly use Cell to revive Buu. Then Babadi would wreak havoc, because Goku couldn't convince Buu to betray Babadi.
Or what if 16 was brought back after the cell games.

Great video as always masako, android 16 has always been One of my favourite characters in Dbz in particular for his background story and as kid i was really shocked when he was destroyed but with time i understood that his dead was the key to kill cell like the krilin's One in namek's saga. I think that maybe he could have been revived in original timeline in a similar way freezer was revived in dbs : wishing his body to shenron and then rebuild him or in the future let Bulma reprogram 16 without his main mission (this One could be intersting in the what if "what if Gohan survived" part 3). I have also some ideas for a what if: what if Mr Satan was trained by Master Roshi when he was young and learned to control Ki energy?
What if Goku had an high power level when he was a baby?
What if Goku and vegeta wished back Planet Vegeta and Saiyan Race?

masako, you should do a what if scenario based on toriyama's original ideas for the andriod arc prior to cell creation (like what if cell never came like you said, or even what if android 17 and 18 never woke up) since it would be interesting to see how it would work out if toriyama had his way (even though it not always a good thing considering how buu arc turned out to be).
or you could do a what if scenario if 16 is still around after cell games (whenever he got rebuild or even ended up surviving) like how it would affect buu arc and even super if he still alive...well more active since he's a robot, but you get the point.

while i still find the explanation for not being wished back not believable(his "brother" android 8/arale got blown up when buu destroyed earth but are still around and grandpa gohan probably should've encountered/told goku about bardock and gine at some point in otherworld.) i understand the reason as he wants to stay in peace as he left knowing his friends/mother in fighterz were in good hands to protect the world as i always loved how he's implied to be why for as powerful as they are 17 & 18 aren't trigger happy like in the bad future with their comraderie.
When they first introduced 17 in Super, I knew as soon as it was mentioned what he did that it was a reference to 16 and his way of honoring his "brother" after death. That said, it would be interesting (and nice) to see a painting or something of 16 by Gohan, 17, or 18 in one of their homes somewhere, preferably Gohan's or 17's.
I think the difference between Trunks' 17 & 18 is the fact that he told the Z fighters about the android attack and they trained and were prepared for it, they even went to meet them. Despite the fact that they couldn't sense energy. If they hadn't been so close it would've taken them much longer to arrive, Ergo 19 and 20 would've had time to leave and imagine they catch them on their departure, without the extra training I'm fairly certain the clown would've stomped all over the Z Fighters. I think the way it would've played out is Kami would've told Piccolo something is amiss and to go check it out and Piccolo would've telepathically called for help before giving cause help took too long to arrive. In the mean time Gero would've had plenty of time to return to his lab and be himself to further program a "Kill all the Z Fighters" inside 17 and 18, instead of being rushed to wake them up. That would make a huge difference on their behavior, that said, 17 and 18 would've rebelled against Gero, all the while, Clown-droid would've been destroyed albeit later by Vegeta, Goku already dead from heart attack which is why Bulma makes a huge deal out of it with Trunks in the future. And since nobody was prepared for 17 and 18, when they came the story became that, two androids, and nobody was alive to say 19&20 existed which is why I think Trunks never heard anything about it. I don't think 16 had anything to do with 17 and 18's personality, by everything I've just said it's just cause Gero had less time to code them(also less time to dispose of 16 by the same account).
Birds are pretty cool tho.
I am so glad someone finally did an analysis of this. In a way, 16 was THE most profound character in all of Dragon Ball. Not just for his own development, but also for the not so obvious impact he had on others, and the fact that his demise was so FINAL. What makes this a candidate for most profound, is that this wasn't even a human or mortal character. The character had sentience, but at the same, not completely it's own agency.

16's influence is what helped turn 17 and 18 good. He was only woken up by them because the events of gero waking them up were different, due to the z fighters chasing them. And the only reason he was getting chased was the z fighters already knew because trunks told them...
So this explains a couple timeline changes.

I'd say the combination of 16s mellow nature and their encounter with Cell was probably what shaped the 17 and 18 of the main timeline.
16 was permissive, but generally not encouraging them to do terrible things and Cell gave them something they didn't have until the end of their lives in Future Trunks timeline: showing them what it felt like to be powerless, to be in danger. To be the victim hoping someone will save YOU.
Those experiences made a mark on their psychology, I'd think.
Plus... They also didn't have 20 years with their primary mission (Kill Goku!) unable to be completed and being the most powerful things on Earth by several orders of magnitude. Like Miracleman/Marvelman remarks about his former sidekick

Even though bringing 16 back would ruin the importance of his death. I still really much miss the guy he is one of my favorite db characters of all time, just hoped he would comeback again since nobody remembers him in super not even gohan who was touched in the heart by 16, gohan never mentions him again. My peace is for android 16 to be remembered by his fellow androids or the z fighters in super as well. Without his final words gohan wouldn’t have snapped and unlocked his potential to defeat cell.
This kind of makes me want an OVA where like Bulma rebuilds 16. But 16 goes and sees how everyone is getting along and sees how 17 and 18 are and decides to destroy himself, either through self destruction or just plain powering off
