2016 Ford Flex CarPlay USB Hub upgrade

- A quick (albeit shaky in spots) video on upgrading the 2016 Ford Flex to use CarPlay. It requires Sync3 2.2 or later (that is just the software upgrade) and an upgraded USB Hub. The hub was about $64 on ebay (HC3Z19A387B or HC3Z-19A387-B, "FORD CARPLAY MODLUE WITH BLUE BACKLIGHT") and took less than 5 minutes to install. The dealer wanted close to $300 for the part and installation and said it would take "90 minutes."
This was fantastic! I have a 2016 Ford F-150, and had pretty much accepted that I couldn't get Android Auto (or Apple CarPlay), without an entire head-unit change. But yesterday I spent about an hour downloading and installed Sync 3 V3, and then ordered the new USB port (thanks Amazon overnight ..lol), and today when the new USB port arrived in less than five minutes I'd installed it, and was overjoyed to see all the Android Auto screens pop up when I plugged my phone in. I feel like I just got a new truck! Thanks!
glad you got it! I was happy when it worked on our's. 😀
Ordered this for the daughter's 2016 F-150. Got if on Amazon for $65. I couldn't find it for sale on the web anywhere using the part numbers I found on Google search. She just input something like F-150 USB Car-Play and up it shows lots of them on Amazon. Prime got it to me the next morning. She is coming over tomorrow, Monday, and we will change it out together. From what I could see from either Google search or on Amazon, comparing the older versus the newer hubs, the newer has more memory and a faster processor with more cores. I had no idea this hub had all the smarts in it. I thought this was all behind the display, in another module. I learn something new every day! Thanks for this vid! Looks like child's play to me. ;) She is looking forward to the new features and for faster downloading any future updates.
Thanks so much for posting this! I have a 2016 c-max energi and our dealership quoted me $240 to do this upgrade. With the $60 part from ebay, a thumb drive (to update to 2.2), your video, and 10 minutes of my time I was able to do it myself at 1/4 the cost. Thanks again!
Glad it helped! We were going to get the local dealer to do it, but they didn't have a clue, so we figured we'd try it ourselves. :-)
Does your phone have to be plug into the hub for the car play to work ?
just did this on the 2016 cmax. Was easy as could be. Paid 87 for the part, but decided to get it directly from the dealership. I had to turn the car on, let it be detected, then off and back on again before apple car play worked though for some reason.
Thanks for this "How to" ... I am going to try this in my 2019 Flex and see how it goes. I travel for work and heavily use the USB connection to the point I have already burned through three USB 3.1 cables (Android). I replaced the cable this time and even returned the original and tried a second. It seems the USB Hub may be burned out from the heavy use (I saw another video from a Ford tech showing my exact same problem). I'll let you know how it goes.
Good luck! 😀
I always use the usb cable to charge my iPhone in my Ford Fiesta 2020 and I never had this issue!
I know this is old but I swap hubs and I’m update to 3.0 build 20204 and still no CarPlay… any suggestions?
hmmmm. no, sorry. 😀. I presume it is working otherwise? We sold the car above so I can’t even look at it.
@@christianfriley yes. I can still use my phone as an audio source, it still charges… just no CarPlay
Thanks for the video!! My dealership just quoted me just shy of $200 to do a job that takes 5 minutes 🤦♀️
Yeah, I asked our dealer too and they quoted something crazy too so I figured I'd give it a try myself since it didn't look super complicated. :-)
Christian Riley definitely. Mine is already a tad loose in the dash so I was already thinking I could just pull it out and plug a new one in. Just bought one online for $50 and will take 5 mins to put in. Not sure how that adds up to $200 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Thanks Christian for the video. Just purchased a 2016 Flex Limited and ordered the hub and should be here today. Do you know what the difference between the new hub and the one that you took out? Just wondered what was changed to the new hub make it work.with CarPlay.
clemarr how was the upgrade n how are u liking the flex ?
Trying to do this on my 2019 ford explorer and there's zero slack in the cables. I popped the module out with pry tools but it doesn't come out enough to see the cables in the back.
Hi, I didn't think you'd need to in the 2019 Fords given they supposedly had the newer one already, but I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions on the slack issue. Maybe someone else will see this and have an idea. 😀
@@christianfriley Pretty sure the hub just went bad. It doesn't recognize anything. Think I saw a video of a sync 2 to 3 upgrade and I need to remove the panel to get to the cables. It could be stuck. Thank you for replying.
That makes sense re it being bad. I wish I had an idea for the short cables.
I have a 2018 limited flex, do you think I need to do this upgrade? the USB port doesnt do shit but charge. They removed the auxiliary Jack so the only way to listen to music is via bluetooth. So annoying.
I use android by the way
Hi, I am not sure. I think that if you have the 2018, it should have this one or newer. I think that it needs Android 5 or newer for Android Auto to work, but I haven't tried it myself. That is really annoying.
@clemarr, I am not sure what the difference is exactly, except there were hardware differences required. Sorry. ;-)
Does this work also for the explorer or is it different procedure
Hi. I’m not sure, but it could be similar. 😀
@christianfriley I just checked the new 3.3 Sync update and apparently the new USB is not needed anymore!! Ford installed apple carplay/android auto on the latest update!!!!
I’m curious to see the difference inside both hub. Is it just an extra data port wire that is allowing sync3 to read iOS or entirely new hardware inside the hub. My 2016 flex sync3 doesn’t do apple CarPlay but from what I read it should do android CarPlay just fine after upgrading it to 3.xx firmware. I’m gonna try to find an android and test it out. It could be as simple as soldering an extra data cable inside usb hub so sync3 can detect apple iOS.
Android Auto does work if you have it updated (just software, not hardware). I had an android phone up till about a week ago and it worked perfectly. I am about to try this upgrade, got the part yesterday, and see if I can get CarPlay to work.
I believe they are the same but the newer one has an extra wire for reading iOS data.
Yeah, I didn't open up the hub itself to see what was different inside, but it is still working nicely on our Flex. If you do find out the difference internally, it would be interesting to hear!
Thanks Dude!
Will this work on a 2015 edge with my touch not sync 3
I am about 99% sure that this would only work with Sync 3. Unfortunately.
would you have an oem part # for sync 3 display?
Hi, I don't unfortunately, it was in the car already, anyone else know?
does this work on 2016 escape?
@@KatelynBenn hi. I'm not sure. If it had sync 3.0 (I think), then it probably would. I'm not sure though. 😀
I have a 2016 f150. do i need this hub before i can update to 2.2.?
I think so. I think that the 2016 models had USB 2 hubs and this is USB 3. I am not 100% sure since we don't have a F-150 to test it on.
Actually you don't need the upgraded hub to update the software, but Apple CarPlay will not initialize if you do not have the upgraded hub. If you only upgrade the software and not the hub, Android Auto will work on your Sync 3 but not Apple CarPlay.
You have to have your phone plug up
Ok and how do I upgrade to 3
Ford might be able to tell you if there is a Ford upgrade. I just did a quick search for "can I upgrade from sync2 to sync3" and it seems like there are conversion kits to replace the old hardware with new. I haven't ever seen them in use - infotainment and 4dtech seemed to be two that had them. They didn't look inexpensive.
Christian Riley thanks for the help
