All you'll need to do is make an account with owner.ford.com and download your vehicle's software update onto a drive, then install the updated USB port into your car's center console. (Part #HU5Z19A387A) After that, simply plug the drive containing the update files into the center console USB, then allow it to update! After that, you're good to go!
Good informative vid but you might have potentially leaked some personal information (maps scene) just looking out..delete my comment if you deem necessary
Benjamin Cazeault an updated USB media hib is required for Apple car play and Android auto to work. They both require more bandwidth than the old media hub supports.
Thanks for the tip! The dealership wanted 2 hours of labor + part cost for this upgrade. They wanted $300. Ridiculous. I had it up and running for $56 after tax!
Any Ford with the SYNC 3. Any Ford with the MyFord Touch will cost you more. If you have SYNC with MyFord Touch or the basic SYNC you will have to upgrade to SYNC 3.
This is great that Ford lets you do this so simply. I’ve had VWs and Audi’s for years and not once have they allowed owners to upgrade the infotainment system to get features that are on newer models.
Not true, Sync3 has the system built in, they messed up production and installed the wrong usb port that allows carplay to work. It is susposed to be installed. I got it fixed under warranty in my 2016 Focus RS.
I had Sync2 on my 2017 Escape. I did a similar process to upgrade to Sync 3, and it just didn't take. Repeated steps, beat myself up, pulled out my hair. Then...I disconnected the battery for a minute. Hooked it back up. Voila! Sync 3 enabled. Then I got an aftermarket wireless Carplay transceiver that I leave plugged in out of sight in the center bin USB, and now I have wireless Carplay on my 2017 Escape. Sweet.
I just did this to my father’s 2016 Ford Escape. Had to search around at local dealers for the hub. There are two that you can get with different part numbers, the only difference is the white or blue light around the USB port. Just follow the instructions on the Ford owners site and pop the new hub in, start her up, let the update do its thing (about 30 minutes) turn the car off and back on, and you have Apple CarPlay
For those complaining about car play not being good, go to your local dealer and get flogged with a $250 map update every six months. After that you will come here with your tails folded like defeated dogs and listen to this tutorial to upgrade your ford to be car play compatible. Great video for those who want it. I don't have a Mustang, however my car came with Android Auto. A few months later when Carplay was made available, it was a free download similar to yours, which they included a free navigation update as well. Not a fanboy of either setup. I use a Galaxy S8 + and my other half has an iPhone 7+. We've tried them both back to back and Android Auto works much better hands down. Plus being able to display Google Maps from the phone onto the head unit when the factory navigation cannot find the location, is awesome. It also means having to ever upgrade the factory navigation SD card. Considering Google Maps updates like every 30 seconds compared to the months, possibly year, they took to create that updated nav SD card. Whichever system you used, the technology is still amazing.
Saw that the HC3Z-19A387-B is replaced by HC3Z-19A387-E, so I ordered this directly from Ford for $50. They sent HC3Z-19A387-F which is an even newer revision. Just installed today and working great!
nice! i did this a a little over a year ago with my 2016 fiesta st. works great! anyone with an android phone can just do the software portion to get it to work!
I just did this on my 2016 Taurus. On the Taurus, there is a housing around the adapter. Remove the housing and then separate the adapter. Since it’s in the center console, I use an angled USB so it isn’t sticking out. I flipped the new adapter housing over so I can use a right angle adapter that I have rather than buying a left angle adapter. As for the update, the Wifi will already have it up to date if you park in a garage with a good WiFi connection.
