    Worked at an Aerospace shop that tried to take on a blue origin part. Spent like $19000 before they decided nah we can't do this. I was just a Bridgeport jockey at the time. I'd have given anything for a shot at that part. So cool.

      I'm a Tooling Engineer at Blue Origin and I totally agree with your statement. I tell engineers all the time to take their prints to the machinists, welders, and inspectors for feedback. These people have a depth of understanding of their processes that we as engineers almost never get, and their experience is hugely valuable. Also, it is huge to see this on RUclips! I've been in Aerospace for 22 years, and I can't show or talk about most of the things I've worked on. Super pumped to see excitment about American manufacturing!

    20+ years ago I went to the machine auction that McDonald Douglas/Boeing plant in Torrance, Ca. that made the parts for the DC-10 jetliner. The plant was made for WWII plane production. They had everything in there including a CMM that had a Plexiglas surround to keep its temp stable. Size, 30' X 20' X 20'. Drop forging, heat treating, machining, plating, you name it they did it. They turned it into a warehouse complex for Asian made stuff. Biggest jobs, forklift drivers I bet.

    Pretty cool to see this. Just got laid off from my aerospace machining job working on a DMG. There are some crazy machining jobs out there right now. Between commercial space and the national labs there are really high paying manufacturing jobs. I'm surprised they let you show as much as you have. It's too bad the listings don't actually show the pay. States need to catch up to Colorado and just start showing the pay.

    • @barrysetzer
      @barrysetzer 5 месяцев назад +3

      I can tell you that they have no problem paying $40 an hour plus for the right people!

    • @TritonTv69420
      @TritonTv69420 5 месяцев назад +7

      @@barrysetzer Nice that's good money especially for Alabama and Florida. The thing that is frustrating that companies aren't catching up to states like Colorado is people don't even know if it's worth looking in to if they are out of state. Once you have the pay transparency, it makes the searching much more fruitful for companies and the employees. Soon the days of playing this salary game will be over nationwide and people will just know what positions pay. I'm sure they pay well considering they have millions of dollars worth of high end machines. It's just something that stood out when clicking on the links. Also worth noting even on those listings they say apply if you still don't meet 100% of the "requirements". This is something that is frustrating for highly skilled younger machinists. My analogy is this; take two people with machining experience. 1 has 20 years of experience operating machines in a bottle opener factory. Yes that's right they simply load parts for making bottle openers. No programming, maybe some setup just high volume production. Then take another person with 2 years of high end prototyping + programming + setup experience with aerospace parts or similar. On paper the first person is "more qualified" and will make much more money but anyone who knows anything about manufacturing knows the second person is more capable. Machining is weird at the high end it's this cross between engineering and manufacturing. You have to know so much to make these crazy parts yet engineers with 2 years of experience make more than most machinists. I worked at a prototype casting shop and they actually had the engineers design the fixturing, if you wanted to so much as chamfer a sharp edge an engineering change order needed to be submitted. So it shouldn't be a big deal to pay highly skilled machinists with clever fixturing designing like the part shown on that big horizontal mill @ 2:00, engineering salaries. There is this disconnect between pay and skill. One of my ex co workers put it best. He left the industry and got a degree in data science. He told me that over the years the machinist had to wear more hats. When he first started as a machinist all you had to do was make parts. Then companies got cheap. Then the machinists had to advise the draftsmen on how to make prints. Then they had to correct the 3d models. Then they had to advise on inspection. Then they have to tell engineers that their designs are too hard to make because of x or y reason. The modern day prototype machinist is heavily under rated and I predict a huge pay spike for the top tier prototype machinists. Lots of retirements coming up soon. O yea I'm impressed you guys toured this facility before @smartereveryday since it's in his backyard haha. Keep on keepin on you guys have a good thing going with the sponsorships and the academy and whatnot.

    I love the tours. In my lifetime, I watched American manufacturing
    dominance nearly vanish. My first tool and die job was sent to China in the early 80s. I respect the messaging and awareness the channel brings to the trade. I've been saying for the past 40 years how important the skilled trade jobs are to making America the manufacturing power house we once were. We went from the world's most innovative nation on earth to farming out our "dirty jobs" knowledge and manufacturing prowess to the lowest bidder. Ronald Ragan oversaw the mass exodus of manufacturing. Driving down wages in the skilled trades and telling kids to go to college, don't get your hands dirty in manufacturing. Trade deals killed the tradesmen. Nothing gets made without machining and skilled tradesmen. A few skilled trades make the world go round without us. The front office doesn't exist.

    This is such a weird coincidence! Just heard about a bunch of machinist jobs for blue origin, and I just machined my first part for blue origin where I work today! They are a relatively
    New customer for us. How amazing for blue origin to let you guys in to make a video ! The space race is really picking up! I’m sure they want the advertisement, I don’t think spacex would ever ever do this.

    Greetings from the UK. I've been CNC Turning nearly 38 years. A week ago my company has purchased a VF2 Haas year 2020. We've been given just 2 days to learn everything. Boom Boom BANG!😅

    This is awesome! I know they had subcontractors in Sweden in the past as well. I don't know if i am alloved to say which company or for what, but it was parts of a machine involved in the early engine production. We have our own legacy here from Volvo flygmotor (it was not that company however) who also made rocket engines for the european space program beside the figther engines for our own aircraft. I always found this type of things super interesting since i was a little kid and discovered the work by Alfred Nobel black powder rockets and later Goddard and Tsiolkovskys work leading to the first flying bi-fuel rockets as we know them today! (Sorry for my English, it is not my native language...)

    Big shoutout to your team - you are rocking in educating us! I am curious about the tricky stuff you face in making rocket engines so well. I am curious to know more about the specific challenges in handover from design team to production team. Could you share some insights?

    you need to do a video again in switzerland at Pilatus Aircraft.
    they upgradet to automated riveting of aircraft fuselage and 4 years ago they installed a GROB cell with 6 machines and 4 starrag ecospeed....
    made my appreticeship there... HUGE company and huge "family" feeling there, they offer 150 jobs for apprenticeships every year on 10 different jobs (machinists, sheet metal, assembly, automation, plastics, painter etc), all in house

    I’ve commented many times, but if you could get ahold of Alex Wright at Ariel Corporation in Mount Vernon, Ohio, I think you’d really like their story and the culture. It would be great for showing women and youth with their apprentice program. They are huge on fixturing too. They are the top dog when it comes to reciprocating gas compressors.
