  • Accused Waukesha Christmas parade attacker Darrell Brooks' ex-girlfriend Erika Patterson testified in court on Friday, Cot. 7. She testified she has a teenage daughter with Brooks - and had been living at The Women's Center in downtown Waukesha prior to the incident at the Waukesha Christmas Parade. The line of questioning by prosecutors referred to an incident in which Patterson said Brooks hit her with an open hand.

I was simply making a general statement. Meaning do you or we as a society want to determine truth before hearing a matter out.
Not all cases are so obvious in who , is who. Who the victim (s) are, and who is liable. Everyone should have righs until they are found guilty by their peers in a court of law. Including the rights to competent representation, and the right to public questioning of the accuser.
Many accusers turn out to be false accusers. They bare false witness.
Our system is brilliant when done right.
Some of my suggestions for court reform
      - stop long drawn out court trials.
      - no bails
      - no money to courts. Unless found guilty, than the guilty party pays for the
      Lawyer fees of the plaintiff.
-the guity pays restitution to their victims. Immediately and if possible.
-life for life - effective within one week.

Sorry but no. Why did the community of Wakeusha have to go through this terrorist attack during their holiday season? Because Wakeusha had a battered woman’s shelter and they were sheltering Erika from Brooks. 24 hours after his mom posts bail, Erika contacted him, gave him the location of the shelter and said to meet nearby at the park where the parade staging area was. Her friends kept trying to keep her from getting in the car even though he was screaming at her demanding money, took her welfare benefits card and again tried to run her over. 17 years of this, if she wants to be with him, why endanger the woman’s shelter, her friends and the community that housed the shelter. Everyone is praising her but I think those that orbit Darryl’s world are a blight on society. She’s 32, they don’t have custody of the 14 yo. They have no reason to see each other except for violence.

Obviously, you are much closer locally to the situation and have presented here that this situation has shades of grey to consider. I fully respect that. I would add, however, one observation, which is that the lines between abuser and the abused are also often blurred. Only a higher power truly knows what power he may have wielded over her, and she had to make personal decisions for her own survival that no one else may ever know.

Sometimes it is done because the defendant earnestly believes they would be the best representation and advocated for themselves in a court of law. Sometimes the defendant chooses to represent themselves for the explicit purpose of intimidating witnesses in cross-examination.
I do think it has a lot of potential to give testifying witnesses for the state significant emotional distress… since the entire time the defense is basically trying to gaslight the witness about crimes the defendant know they committed, unlike outside defense representation who cannot fully know whether the crime was or not committed by their clients if they were not present … and even then, non-self defense representation if I am not mistaken, usually believes in their client’s innocence.
I don’t know the purpose of allowing a defendant representing themselves to cross examine a witness. Like I don’t know what right of the defendant it is likely seeking to protect, but yeah it can go really badly.

Agree with this 100%. I know that the defendant has the right to defend themselves and to cross examine witnesses in order to provide a proper defense for themselves but in situations where it is an abuser questioning their victim it is hard to watch.
There was another popular trial recently where the defendant chose to represent themselves(I can't remember the defendant's name currently). He was on trial for murdering his young disabled daughter and the mother of the child, as well as the attempted murder of his son. It was so hard to watch this man cross examine his own son who he had tried to murder. That boy was so strong during the whole thing, truly an inspiration. Luckily he was adopted by one of the police officers who showed up on the scene originally and is in a loving environment with access to help for the trauma he must have after everything he experienced.

Yes, it would. An accused person has the right to face their accusers. They also have the right to represent themselves. The court had 4 competency evaluations of this man and all found him competent. Just because a person is evil, cruel, abusive and even a murderer doesn't make them crazy in medical terms. He should have kept the public defenders. The jury is getting to see him for what he is. They know and are witnessing exactly how he is. Being obnoxious and believing stupid things he found on the internet about Sovereign Citizens doesn't make him crazy. It makes him hard headed and stupid.

We don’t always choose to give our power away. Sometimes, we can find ourselves losing out to a partner who bullies, belittles or otherwise terrorizes us into giving our power up to them. They take power from us with threats and fear, but we further perpetuate this imbalance of power by sticking around when we know things aren’t right. Failing to stick up for our boundaries is a critical misstep, and one that lets abusers in.

Perfect demonstration of the way an abuser tries to accuse and the victim, to make it her fault he hits her. How many times does she have to repeat this conversation? At what point is it badgering the witness?

Amazing bravery shown by Erika.. Her courage stands in stark contrast to 'Mr. Brooks', a coward who while on trial for such a ghastly crime was intent on getting her kicked out. He is such a POS, glad he is rotting in a cell for life. While it is uncomfortable to watch, this is the cost the courts pay to protect the innocent from an unfair trial. There should be better rules to prevent or at least strictly govern the extent to which an abuse victim can be questioned by their abuser in court.

In hindsight, I think he wanted her to feel sorry for him. That’s why he dressed like a prisoner that’s one strong woman justice has been served.
