I have a string of hearts in a 10” planter. She’s amazing. I got some rooted cuttings from my aunt who got her plant in 1981 in Long Beach, California. Love them.
I have all but the regular String of Hearts. Variegated, Orange River, String of Spades and Silver Glory. They’re all so easy to care for. This video is awesome. Keep them coming!
These are so “hearty”😏 you can propagate by strand like you were doing but also by leaf or heart! Which is my favorite way yes it’s a little more time consuming but so cute to see all the hearts getting their roots!
I got 4 or 5 cuttings, 5-6 node strands, last summer. I chopped them into butterflies and laid them directly on soil that I kept moist for a couple of weeks. I not have a nice full pot about 1.5 long. If I were you I’d take a few strands of each and do the butterfly method. It won’t take much away from your strand cuttings and it’ll give you a nice top to your plants in less than a year.
Anyone else do a pause, shop, pause shop to Ferns videos? Any time she focuses on a plant we haven’t seen in a while I just gotta see if I can find one to buy 🤣
Sooo glad I saw this video!! As a "newbie" string of .. collector, I have all 3 varieties. My variegated I just got and it's very full and short. My regular is about 4 ft. and a pretty nice size. However, My silver glory is only about 3 strands and getting close to 3 ft. long. It definitely needs to be more full. I really needed to know the best way to propagate them!! Thanks for a very "instructional" video!!🤔 I may attempt it very soon with at least my silver glory!! 🤞❤👍 I always enjoy your videos, Fern!! 🌿🪴🌱🍃👏👏
I have the basic SOH and have so much of it now as it grows so fast. I used to water prop it, sometimes do butterfly cuts and root cuttings in a sealed bag with sphagnum (works really well for me). But now I have so many plants all growing like crazy I just chop off chunks and stick them in a bag with sphagnum. When they root up, I curl them into a pot and shake potting soil/compost and water them and tuck them in. Then I have another plant and the cycle continues! Thinking of using some as under planting, as I think they are technically crawlers. I’ve a long planter of crawling Philos and some SOH would look cool as a planty base with some trailing over the planter. Wonder if anyone else is trying this. I’ve seen it done with Tradescantia and the look is very pretty.
I would cut more. It will branch out where you cut. I choped mine down to 30 cm. It was 2 m long. And i would not put the new ones in the same pot. The old ones have already bulbs. They need less water. The new propogations will have just roots. Means they need to be watered more often. But could luck
I got a regular one when I first got into plants (2020) and they were oh so popular, but mine died cause I was still a newbie! The other day I ordered a plant off Etsy and they sent me a vsoh as a gift and I was so hyped bc I always wanted the veriagated kind!! I know a little more now about plants so I have high hopes it’ll do good 😅
The string of hearts is a super plant!!!! Thrives on neglect and still looks healthy & lush root bound. This plant is a winner!!! I have an ordinary string of hearts. I would love to have it hanging in a pot from the ceiling. That would look awesome!!! 💜🪴💜
Hi Fern! This was a very timely video as I have several strings of things but my String of Hearts was gifted to me and has a long stem without leaves then a bunch at the bottom. So today is the day! Propagating my String of Hearts! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great video. I have String of Needles, String of Spears/Arrows, plus these three you have, and my string of needles looks a grand tangle like the one you called the rat's nest, lol. They are one of my favourite plants, and I have promised them I'll do a trim and repot of them this week. Thanks for this.
I am a beginner of strings of anything. I have a VSOP and VSOH. Both are doing ok and still growing for me! That’s a plus! I have a terrible time with rot, especially now with the season change and figuring out the watering schedule again. I have a question about the aroid mix! I keep trying to mix my own but after opening a bag of soil full of gnats 🤢 I’m terrified to do anything except semi hydro!! I might try the aroid mix and save the guess work of mixing m own. Thank you for your videos! Love watching them in the mornings on the weekends when the house is quiet! ❤️
I can't believe this dropped exactly on my lunch break! So relaxing to have on. I actually just got a baby string of hearts last week so I'm glad I get to see you take care of yours and learn from you!
Yay! Just what I needed for a rainy gray day! 💚☕️ Edit: I love string of things plants. I have a regular string of hearts, silver glory, string of pearls, string of tears, string of dolphins, string of bananas, and I’d love a string of needles, spades, variegated hearts…basically I want all the things. 😂
I really recommend string of spades! They look really similar to the hearts and are so easy care plus they are extremely fast growing. I keep having to cut mine back as they reach the floor. 🤍💚
I have the string of hearts silver (I think) it lives in my kitchen and is over 6 foot long. I rescued it about a year ago (it was in really bad condition) but it is looking full and healthy now. I will need to chop it again soon.
❤very Hearty 😂 lol. I love hearing the train 🚂 also..we live by some tracks too, and I love going out on my deck, when it rolls by . Love your channel 🌿🍂☀️
Ahhhhh I saw this on your story and was so excited to see the video!! I have a variegated string of hearts but I need to give it more love, and really need to find a spot that I can actually let it hang instead of sitting on a table😅 I can’t believe how massive yours is!!!
You’re a real one for watching my stories - thank you! And yes it can be hard to find spots for long plants, but so satisfying when you get them in the perfect one.
that reminds me that my slightly sad looking string of hearts needs a haircut and a repot. Will need to remeber to cut and propagate it later today :D I probably wait with the repot until the cuttings are ready to be planted together though or maybe even till spring.
las tienes realmente impresionantes , yo tengo varias pero nunca me han llegado a desarrollarse así, gracias por las ideas y la inspiración que aportas
I have 2 types of string of hearts, green and silver. Both are rehabbing. 😫 I’m trying the butterfly method, in a sour cream container with soil inside of a ziplock bag to hopefully keep the soil moist. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I have the silver and the variegated in my collection. Like, yours, my silver is far more lush than the variegated. My variegated has like 5 long strands and looks kind of sad. I think I need to do a trim and root some cuttings too! Thanks for the inspo!
I love mine, I bought a tiny plant off eBay back in the day when I didn’t know what I was doing - I didn’t even know what variegated was?! She rotted not too long ago so I currently have 2 strands lol that I’m going to chop and prop after this 😊 strings of things don’t tend to do well with me so I’m glad I’ve managed to keep this one somewhat alive!
My variegated string of hearts is my favorite plant of all. This video made me remember I've been neglecting them. They grow so fast i never worry about them but i think mine needs to be repotted and detangled. And I should add the 15 propagations i have around the house to the mother plant. 💚
I have the variegated soh, and you've inspired me to water it. 😂 it's definitely a plant that gets neglected, and yes, as soon as I move it the hearts lock into each other. I'm only good at string of watermelons. Probably because it's in no drainage. Ha!
i've got two string of glory ones. one in a 3d printed sappho bust planter, and one hanging in a machrame hanger. neither are very long/super big, but i actually kinda like them that way, especually with the sappho bust.
Where did you get that GORGEOUS white pot in the background while you're repotting? The one with the butterfly on it. I love all your pots but that one is stunning!
Yes,I’m in the same place as you are Fern. I was so into ‘hearts’ a few years ago and now I’ve decided to look after them and display them on show! Yours are still amazing! 💚💚 Natalie
I have the variegated one and she was attacked by thrips and is left with loads of leafless vine exposed, ive chopped her back and I’m propping them so hopefully next year she’ll look good. Love your green one, wow shes lush!!
The roots on that silver glory! 🥰 it’s gonna look lush once the props root up ;) I have the regular and the variegated string of hearts. For some reason, I always rot mine when I prop in water so I’ve had to switch to moss. Water looks like a much easier process but I just can’t keep them alive that way.
Your video makes me want to try SOH again. My last one was putting out such small leaves. I am sure it was a lack of light issue. Silver Glory is my favorite 😍
I have VSOH and Orange River. They both grew like weeds and got neglected too. I chopped them both last night and hope to make them lush again. I want a silver glory too.😍
My variegated string is hearts is a beast! So easy too, I just bottom water about once a month when the big leaves get somewhat soft. I just took so many propagations last month and threw them in a perlite prop box. It’s working good! She’s now blooming like crazy. 😂 Before I trimmed she was taller than me at 5’ 10” (178 cm)
I do have 2 strings of hearts. I have one hanging in the window that I think is the silver. And I have the variegated pink one sitting in the window in a terracotta pot. They are both doing well. The hanging one has literally grown more than 10 feet this summer. I cut it so I could propagate some and it has already grown all that back that I cut off. The pink one is new but it has already started growing out of the pot. The propogations didn't work but I will try again. 😊
I love ❤️ your String of Hearts, beautiful. What type of soil did you use? Did you must or just water her? I did not realize you could start cutting in water. Beautiful, a lot of roots on your String of Hearts repot
Thank you so much! I used the Molly's Aroid Mix (linked in description box if you're interested) but prior to that it was just a mix of coco coir, perlite, & orchid bark.
This was so fun! Even unwell, they still look great! I had a small four inch string of hearts…I wasn’t good at knowing its watering needs, soooo I have a single strand in a one inch pot, and honestly I love her 😂 had her for like almost a year as just a loner strand haha.
Got my first string of hearts last week and they’re already pushing out new growth for me. Those two little plants and this video are convincing me I might need to get a few more!!
Really enjoyed this video. I love string of hearts and have 3 ( I think they are the silver variety ) that I need to pot up together but I do find the tangling annoying 🙈 so I try to keep them as detangled as I can. I struggle with knowing how much to water them though as the leaves on mine still feel pretty thin after watering so I never know if I’m caring for them correctly.
Okay, I'm watching this on the TV but had to pull it up on my phone to comment... THOSE ROOTS ON THE SILVER GLORY?! I did not expect that!!! My jaw literally dropped when it popped out of the pot. I don't know why I thought their root systems couldn't get that full! 😅
The yogurt cup was actually a pretty decent upgrade when you consider the extra height as well. Clearly, that plant knew to grow down and not just shallow! It kinda makes me want to check my string of turtles but they're doing fantastic and i don't want to switch their pot (i don't have one that would work for them). So I'll wait! I donno if hearts work the same as turtles and bananas but i toss the leaves back on top if they break or jump off and they root and start a new vine on their own. My turtles are so full on top i can't find the soil with my finger bc I've tossed the jumpers back in everytime!
I have two of the 3 varieties and love them both sooooo much!! I actually bought both at a big box store here, both super lush and about 2.5 feet each!! Your green hearts look AMAZING!!! I feel like it would look perfect hanging right up on the wall where you were highlighting the length of it! My favorite is the variegated one but it sure is a close call!
Oh how I love string ofs, I have a bunch, I have a mixed pot I’m trying to get full like the crazy plant guys and I’m almost halfway there. The spades are little menaces tho that just want to climb themselves but are absolutely adorable on a trellis
I loved watching this Fern, I'm a big SOH fan, and have the same varieties. I can totally relate to the rats nest situation😆 I think the other SOH plant you were talking about is one I bought as 'orange cloud' but tbh I prefer the others. It has smaller, narrower darker leaves, grows like crazy but not substanial enough for me. My silver glory is my fave too. Really enjoying your content Fern, thank you so much 🥰🌿💕💚
I truly don't know why they "went out of style"...lost their popularity or whatever. I LOVE mine! I love trailing plants and I love the vibe that string of hearts gives! I have the regular and variegated versions. Mine were struggling and I put them in my grow tent and they absolutely popped off!! I recently saw that there is a string of frogs which is actually a ficus...but it's soooooo cute and I think that I must add it to my collection! You should check it out if you haven't seen it before. Hope all of yours bounce back better than ever! I'm sure they will!
Loved every second of your video! Is there a good and bad time out the year to chop? I live in Australia and we’re in the middle of winter, and yes it’s bloody cold, and a lot of our plants have started new grow and even blooms. So im wondering if now would be a good time or not.
I LOVE soh, I have the regular and the variegated one. They've always been one of my favourite plants ❤ Yours look so cute too!💚 I had an opportunity to buy the Silver Glory a while back and I didn't because I didn't really like it then, but now I kinda regret not buying it 😅
OMG my SOH are so neglected! They were doing so great, but my cats cannot leave them alone, so I needed to put them on top of my cabinet so now the top is bald. But this video is inspiring and I should give mine an upgrade too!
I love my variegated string of hearts and it is growing like crazy all pretty and pink on the leaves. I also have a green one that is growing, but not as well. Had some of the stems on it just get real thin, maybe they were damaged when I brought it home? I'd like to know what caused that. I tried the butterfly method (sort of) with some of them in the top of the pot to try to propagate them, but they did not survive. I have some in water propagating and rooting. I am wondering how long to let the roots get before I add them to the pot? I have not seen the silver variety yet. I may try some leaves again in a little different way as I saw someone was very successful with them. Mine start rooting very fast in only a few days in my south facing kitchen window (there is a covered patio on the other side of the window). I am in Central California USA, Planting Zone 9. I liked your video. I think I would have made the cuttings about 8" long and done more of them though. For the rat's nest. I would have had to try to propagate anything I thought was viable from it. Maybe to try the leaf part again. I spent a long time untangling my green one. Where the bifurcations -when it branches off after a cutting gets tangled very easily. I am learning how these grow. If I keep propagating them, more will branch, and I will get a fuller plant. I was afraid to try these, but I love them and I am amazed at how well they are doing. Someone said to watch that the top of the plant gets good light too to keep the top full. I can't wait till these get bigger. Love all your videos. Oh in one of the comments below you said you use a systemic pesticide for new plants. I would love to see what you do with new plants to prevent bringing any pests into your collection, how long to quarantine, what systemic pesticide to use, etc. Thank you for all the great info! Have a great week! 😃♥🪴
I had string of hearts but she started to decrease leaves so I sold it to a friend 😅 hope she enjoys her life now, because unfortunately my conditions were too poor for this plant I guess…
That string of hearts is gorgeous. I never seen one that long. I can’t get mine to grow not even 2 leaves. I love them but I’m just waisting my money at this point. They always die on me. 😫
I cant get my string of hearts to thrive. I have it in very airy soil, only water when completely dry, have it out of draughts or heat, give as much light as is possible in my dark flat. still it keeps on rotting and giving me yellow leaves, even after rescuing it. Any tips? I love them, they are such a classic? like Chlorophytum. I just can't seem to keep either genus alive, though.
I’m a hairstylist and have had clients with long hair and a rats nest I’ve needed to untangle that’s what it reminded me of 🤣
I have a string of hearts in a 10” planter. She’s amazing. I got some rooted cuttings from my aunt who got her plant in 1981 in Long Beach, California. Love them.
String of Hearts os one of my very favorites. Untangling them is such a good stress reducer! ❤
My favorite thing to do
I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one who has a designated "plant chopstick" 😛
It took me 3 hours to untangle mine after moving into a new house. Horrendous. I applaud you 😂
I have all but the regular String of Hearts. Variegated, Orange River, String of Spades and Silver Glory. They’re all so easy to care for. This video is awesome. Keep them coming!
Here in Brazil we actually call the String of Hearts, ''Tangled Hearts"! 🙃
That’s very fitting lol!
Wow! That’s the best name for them!
These are so “hearty”😏 you can propagate by strand like you were doing but also by leaf or heart! Which is my favorite way yes it’s a little more time consuming but so cute to see all the hearts getting their roots!
Omg yes lately I’ve been just twirling it on the top and adding some dirt over it, I checked mine the other day and it had new roots and growth too
Just the leave
Loving the shaggy look!
This was the best lunch date! 💝
I got 4 or 5 cuttings, 5-6 node strands, last summer. I chopped them into butterflies and laid them directly on soil that I kept moist for a couple of weeks. Anyone else do a pause, shop, pause shop to Ferns videos? Any time she focuses on a plant we haven’t seen in a while I just gotta see if I can find one to buy 🤣
I don't but I have bought quite a few plants after seeing hers. My hoya chicken farm is working on a peduncle! 😍
Sooo glad I saw this video!! As a "newbie" string of .. collector, I have all 3 varieties. My variegated I just got and it's very full and short. My regular is about 4 ft. and a pretty nice size. I bought one this summer. I have tried giving it a reboot BUT...not looking so good. You are so gentle with your handling. So sweet.

I love variegated string of hearts. It the only one I have not killed!! Those roots!!
I love my string of hearts 🥰
Thanks for the video.
I have regular, spades, variegated, orange river and silver glory so yea… I love me some strings ❤

I just got a string of hearts shared with my daughter for mothers day and it has become one of my fav.s and im propagating more..love them❤❤❤❤
Good job, they will look look nice an full in no time, yes I had happened to me😂
I love the silver glory 🤍💚💖
I have the string of hearts silver (I think) it lives in my kitchen and is over 6 foot long. I rescued it about a year ago (it was in really bad condition) but it is looking full and healthy now. I will need to chop it again soon.
I want string of hearts so bad!!! You have a sweet collection!!
❤very Hearty 😂 lol. I love hearing the train 🚂 also..we live by some tracks too, and I love going out on my deck, when it rolls by . Love your channel 🌿🍂☀️
I potted up my VSOH and Silver Glory together and I have such a beautiful full pot of them both!
Ahhhhh I saw this on your story and was so excited to see the video!!

Inspirational for me. Thank you! I feel better about my vsoh. Chopping and propping tomorrow!

I probably wait with the repot until the cuttings are ready to be planted together though or maybe even till spring.
i have a silver glory, and i just did the same as you did with yours! chopped it completely back because i neglected the heck out of him

You made me realize my 6 foot hot mess is a silver glory! Lol I’m so doing this with mine, she’s been throwing a fit since repotting
My variegated string of hearts is my favorite plant of all. This video made me remember I've been neglecting them. They grow so fast i never worry about them but i think mine needs to be repotted and detangled. And I should add the 15 propagations i have around the house to the mother plant. 💚

I just got my first string of hearts the pink variety, It is a cutting that is water propagating. I’m so excited for it to get big enough to pot up
I feel like you read my mind making this video. I just watched your last one and thought "whoa look at the SOH on the shelf, I want to know more" 🥰
Oh amazing! 👏 thank you for watching 😊
Your video makes me want to try SOH again. My last one was putting out such small leaves. I am sure it was a lack of light issue. Silver Glory is my favorite 😍
I feel like Silver glory, orange river and the string of arrows tangle themselves so easy 😭
I have VSOH and Orange River. They both grew like weeds and got neglected too. I chopped them both last night and hope to make them lush again. I want a silver glory too.😍
I have a very long string of hearts and a variegated string of hearts. I like them equally.

Thank you so much! I used the Molly's Aroid Mix (linked in description box if you're interested) but prior to that it was just a mix of coco coir, perlite, & orchid bark.

I had 2 big ones this summer the regular and variagated. I sold the regular and now just have the variagated. It's a messy tangled mess 😅
Ahh so glad you love them too! Such great finds for the big box store 😊
I can totally relate to the rats nest situation😆
I think the other SOH plant you were talking about is one I bought as 'orange cloud' but tbh I prefer the others.
I have a variegated SOH that I love! Lately the hearts aren’t as firm as they used to be - it sure what’s going on there, but she’s still so pretty.
Where did you purchase your ring? On your index finger the snake and apple?? 😍it’s gorgeous
I have one since 2021 because i watched a video about it from you 😊 it's just a normal one.
I LOVE soh, I have the regular and the variegated one. They've always been one of my favourite plants ❤ Yours look so cute too!💚 I had an opportunity to buy the Silver Glory a while back and I didn't because I didn't really like it then, but now I kinda regret not buying it 😅
Danke fürs video.liebe grüsse aus deutschland 🥰💚
Just when I needed a pick me up! ❤
Enjoy 🥺💚
@@wildfern always❤❤
Thanks for another great video, your SOH look beautiful! I love your nails, what colour are you wearing please? 😊💖🪷
OMG my SOH are so neglected! They were doing so great, but my cats cannot leave them alone, so I needed to put them on top of my cabinet so now the top is bald. But this video is inspiring and I should give mine an upgrade too!
I just cut mine while watching! 😂❤
Hi started collecting those plants do you recommend me always leaving them in a small pot?
if you underwater your string of hearts does it look like the vines rot? that happened to mine and i was unsure whether i over or underwatered
I'm so happy your quail are doing well! Keep us posted I'd love it if they made an appearance in a video one day if we are so blessed
I used to have one, but killed it by overwatering 😅
I have a normal SOH hanging in front of my window, she’s almost to the floor now and will need a chop soon!
Ahh they’re so lovely! And luckily propagate like a dream 😊
Fern, I like your shorts. Where’d you get them?
💚💚💚
omg where did you get the blue wavy mug!
from a market in Charlottetown - sorry, wish I had a link!
I have a string of dolphins and I love it. I would like to get a string of turtles too. I think they are cute!
I get major Brooke Schields (in younger years) vibes with your bangs out of your face. Looks great.
Also...... another great video.
When the strands split into two it’s called bifurcation. Or that it bifurcated
