I absolutely love Ceropegia, it's an amazing beginner plant for a lot of people and taught me so much about caring for plants. It's one of those plants that really goes to show the importance of what the leaves look like. Tiny leaves despite good lighting = Needs more water Leaves are lacking the silver markings = Needs more light Leaves are a good size, if not large, but grow in a bit curled inward = You're doing a great job on watering, but it needs more light Leaves are super wrinkled and soft, stem is in okay condition = Needs more water Tiny leaves despite good watering habits = Needs more light White, powdery substance popping up on the leaves or stem = More airflow and treat for powdery mildew (surprisingly, Neem works well for this) Oldest leaves occasionally yellow and fall off = Completely normal!
I just got my string of hearts a few days ago, thanks for the tips! 😭 Now I'm worried mine won't get enough light bc I only have a north east facing window :( UPDATE: I got a grow light bulb for my desk lamp, and now it's doing much better! It was doing okay in the North facing, but the new growths were very far apart and the leaves growing curled. Now I leave it under the light ~15 hrs, and the vines are fuller and the leaves flat and pretty!
Thank you for this comment. People usually don't tell you these things. My VSOH is still a baby and older leaves are becoming wrinkled, thin and soft and I wasn't sure if it was too much or too little water. I will water it more. ❤
Hi Olive. It's so nice to listen to CORRECT info on String of plants. I collect, propagate and sell differerent strings. I want to scream every time someone tells me that they must be or they have treated their string as a succulent. It's 2 totally different things! I think your video was very informative to people that are new to strings. If there is one tip I can give to people wanting to grow string of pearls: buy a big established plant. Feel the soil, if the soil is sogging wet, leave the plant. Happy planting!
I've tried baby size pots of string of pearls and also concluded that I need a big established pot to do well. The baby pots last a few weeks and quit lol
I took a string and brought it to the top and pinned it down with bobby pins to make it more top heavy. Light on the top of the plant it critical for more growth
Hi Fern. Lovely to see you! After the string of hearts finishes flowering and you see a long pod, when it’s ready it will burst open and you can collect the seeds and i have grown them that way, a bit slow to grow but if you just keep them moist they will grow into full plants!
I so agree with the watering advice. I've only had my variegated string of hearts a short while, but it's still in it's nursery cup, hanging in a window and I have to water it like every 4 or 5 days. I hate when I hear "wait til the leaves get soft". I hear this about Pothos, Philodendron and Hoya too. Yes, these plants need to dry between watering, but if your leaves are curling, drooping or getting soft, you are letting that plant dry TOO much. Like you said, it stresses the plant. They won't die, but you are unnecessarily making your plant suffer IMO. Just wait till the soil feels dry, not until your plant starts looking sad.
I love how Olive always leaves when you’re talking in the same room as hers 😂😂😂 such a Diva! 💚 I didn’t have luck with string of’s before but I might try them again following your tips 🙂
You should plant all the ones that basically look the same together! Like the string of hearts and the string of spades of you put them in the same pot on opposite sides it would be really full and pretty!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! My string of hearts is looking rough and my pearls died over the summer because I was watering them like succulents and it was heartbreaking. Especially because I paid 8.99 for a tiny, tiny mini pot of it. I appreciate you!! Hopefully, my hearts will thrive now!
OMG!! My favorite PlantTuber rocking the La Dispute t-shirt all the way up in Canada!!! Those are my homeboys from back in the day (local band where I'm from, Grand Rapids, Michigan area) and we used to see them multiple times a week. Even twice in the same day sometimes lol. I still can't believe how popular they are internationally. I love them so much. I miss the days of seeing them in a hole in the wall basement of a local library lol. Sorry to spill, but I'm thrilled to see this while watching unrelated plant content ☺️☺️☺️☺️
I literally just bought a cute little variegated pink sting of hearts yesterday and I’m nervous about getting them to thrive. Thank you for this couldn’t have been better timing!!
I just got a tiny little string of dolphins for my birthday in September and I love It! The little dolphins are so cute! It seems to be growing pretty well - not vining yet but I just love it
Also. I’ve never heard of the string of needles so now I need one. I’ve got the shields and string of daggers. The needles looks like the hoya linearis
I feel like you could make this a series. Like talking about plant care tips for plants you really struggled with that are popular or plants that are super simple/ popular for new plant parents that internet can over complicate
I got a varrigated with pink string of hearts. Its been difficult to say the least! Curled leaves are a very big problem. I have her under grow lights and shes growing but the new growth isn't very good. Curling too. I am watering ok- when its dry but, just not doing well overall. So disappointed but, I haven't given up yet. Your is so pretty. Love that color!💚💚😊
Great video! I don’t currently have any ‘string ofs’ but always look at them when I go to the garden centre as I do like trailing plants. Won’t be long before I get one I’m sure. I certainly would like to see a start to finish propagation video as it seems essential to get a ‘full’ plant. Thanks for sharing your experience with these plants💚
I killed my first Variegated string of hearts by overwatering , they sent a replacement and that has gotten long , I wait till it’s dry all the way then water and a lot of light , I know my strings are doing good like yours blooming and putting off those round parts that you can just plant up , I started with 2 strands so it’s 👍🏼 I’m propagating V hearts in a small terrarium in pearlite because everything seems to thrive in there .
This has been a great video. I’m finally able to keep strings of things alive now. I am an o er waterer and I have to hold myself back when I’m doing plant care. Mine were in a west window, with the exception of my strong of spades, it’s in a east window with poor lighting. They have all taken off this summer. I now have a grow light in the east facing window for my quarantine room. I’ll be moving my sos to the kitchen which also faces east but there are also grow lights. All are doing well. Sorry this ended up being so long winded. Your videos are one of my favorites. You’re second to Charmaine. I know you know you cause I came to you through her talking about your plants and she through your name up on the screen and I immediately found you and have been following you since then. I’ve even gone back in your videos and watched a few of the older ones. I thoroughly enjoy your joi de vie. I hope I spelled that right. I’ll let you go now. I hope you made it through to the end.
I had 3 small terracotta pots of string of hearts outside all summer. I bought them in the spring and they did so amazing all summer long (I’m in South Carolina). I had to bring them in since it has been getting too cold at night. I decided to pot them all together in one hanging pot. Within 2 weeks they were dead. I was crushed. They had just started blooming and I was so excited. I have no idea where I went wrong. It had to have been a watering issue. Some looked over watered but some strings looked like they just completely dried out. I propagated every single thing I could (butterfly method). I think I may try a plastic pot instead. I thought I was being safe with the terracotta, but I really don’t know. So frustrating!
I swear I watch your channels for the plants but now I’m even more excited to watch your video’s for you’re shirts 😂 La dispute and comeback kid ❤ went to see Alexisonfire here in Belgium yesterday and counterparts played in a different venue the same day. Canadian bands are taking over Belgium 😮 also my wife is Canadian 😅
I just recently stopped cutting my blooms because I’ve found that new growth often branches from there! So I cut blooms for longer growth and don’t cut for bushier growth! 😊
I have a variegated soh, it was a 6 in cutting, I cut it up to do the butterfly method in soil, and all but one of them died lol. So now i have one cutting, in sphagnum, that is now putting out its second set of new leaves, for a total of six leaves. Ive had it for months now! I’m getting impatient and will probably buy a full pot at some point lol. I want what you have! They look amazing!!!
To get them to fill out, take the top foot or so of the plant and pin it back into the soil. I just take it and wrap it around and pin in a few different places. They will root along the stem and throw out new stems to fill out. I had a 2 leaf variegated SOH 2 years ago and every time it grew a strand I would pin it back in and now I have a full, 6inch pot, long plant! Your plants look great! 😊
when propagating, i’ve had success with doing a combination of strand cuttings and the butterfly method. the butterfly method helps to fill out the base while the strands get it trailing faster rather than having to start with solely single node cuttings
Thank you so much for the info! I want my first string of hearts to be happy before I get more. I deffy learned that they want water from a trip i went on and sis almost unalived herself. Moving to the window to see it the light helps and water her. Adding the spades to my wish list theyre gorgeous. I still havent managed to prop them but hope to for the future
You can place a pot with soil in the middle of the plant until the hearts root. after rooting you cut the strings and you are left with two plants. put the two plants together in one new pot and you get a fuller plant 😊
I have all of the same “string of”’s as you except for the silver glory and I do have regrets. I’ve seen the silver glory at plant swaps but, never got any bcuz I thought they were to similar to string of hearts. Seeing your silver glory I realize they do look different, like you said. I’ll def be looking for them at swaps now. I currently have an insane crazy mess of string of hearts in my greenhouse, it’s madness and overwhelming - they def grow fast!
Thank you for talking about more regular watering! When I first got one of the standard variety, I had read to let them completely dry out and wait until you can bend the leaves also. My plant ended up looking super sparse and with wrinkled leaves. I have started watering more often and it's doing a lot better! Shame that there's so much incorrect info out there, thank you for the truth! Might be a dumb question, but do the varigated ones also produce the little root balls near the nodes?
I had huge success of mine, around Marche I bought a handful of dried out ones for 50c each and they’ve almost tripled in size since and become nice and colourful and plump too. ❤
I was about to throw mine out out of pure frustration with that plant (it being the 23734th try to take care of a string of hearts and always failed), but youtube recommended this video of yours to me and so I shall give that plant another try with your tips! 😄Will try to save what's left of it after the fungus gnats almost destroyed it 😅
i feel like i’ve gone through that learning experience re:watering with some of my hoya (specially my compacts). i’ve always read that you should treat them like succulents and to only water them the leaves are soft and bendable, because of their thick, succulent leaves - but their roots are so thin and delicate, they can’t store as much water as true succulents. i had to cut off all the (dead) roots on one plant in my compacta pot and reroot in water because of this. but now it’s doing so well with regular watering!!!❤
I think hoya are a lot thirstier than people give them credit for. There's a post from a year or two ago on a hoya subreddit entitled "Water. Your. Hoya. ," and it talks about the damage you're doing to your plant if you wait till it's bendy.
I 100% agree with the watering! I think that’s the thing that helped my hearts the most :) If the leaves are bendy, it’s a little too late lol. Oh! Also, have you tried propping string of pearls? I cannot root those for anything -.-
I recommend string of pearls 😊 they are so cool. I do have string of dolphins and variegated hearts ❤️ love all of them! I would love to have silver glory too because I love silver leaves as well! Thanks for your care tips!
I remember you mentioned about watering in a previous video, and it really helped my SOHs! Thank you for that 💚 My variegated SOH are a lot less full than the regular ones, don't know why it's not thriving as much. Love your content 🌱
Your string of plants are so pretty! I just got my first string of plant the same day you posted this video! I hope I do good. I’ll deff take you tips and yes I would love for you to do a start to finish video on propagations. Love you and you videos so much!
Hi there Fern! Enjoy you and your videos so much. Also an R.N. retired now. Did you find that after fertilizing with Liquidirt that you had more fungus gnats? I’ve never had an infestation until I started giving them this, diluted as per instructions, every time I watered! As for panic attacks, take care of you, then your plants. I went through all of that crap. I know the struggle is real and as you know, there’s a huge hereditary part/component to them. This too shall pass. Never apologize for your emotions. Never stop being you. You’re lovely, sincere, thorough. You’re my go to girl. Bored? Fern. Happy I watch Fern. Sad, Fern. Oooops sorry Olive. Should’ve added your name there too. You are so stinking cute.
So jealous of how well your string of hearts propagate. I’ve used water, sphag, perlite and it’s rotted in all of them. Not sure what I’m doing wrong .
Thanks for the video. String of is something I still occasionally struggle with though my string of pearls is actually doing well now as is my small v. string of hearts though I definitely want to grow it bigger.
think my string of broken hearts was underwatered and lost leaves, but decided to grow a few new compact leaves, but a few days later dropped them. maybe it's not meant to be
Your regular SOH is so thick and lush. The top of my pot is full. But my strings aren’t. Also dealing w the leaves on the lower strands drying and crisping up but not dry at the pot
Dude I started watering my vsoh with my aroids when you first mentioned it a while ago and you are totally right. I can’t believe I used to let it get squishy! Thank you for the advice haha
I too love string ofs!! I have a string of needles too I replaced my variegated hearts after my kitty got it and wow it’s now very pink and pretty long! My string of turtles is probably 6 feet! I have to constantly cut the “blooms” off! I think I told you my spades reverted to hearts?! It’s really long and blooms a lot 🤷♀️. I really want the silver hearts!!! Soon
My VSOH was doing really great and getting pretty long. It exploded with blooms and noticed when it did that the leaves got smaller. I feel like I might just give it a haircut and next year I know to cut the blooms off. 🙂
I've been propagating my string of spades (together with my string of turtles and string of dolphins) in my perlite prop box. Every node touching perlite has grown roots. Maybe you should try again 😊
i repotted my string of hearts into a slightly bigger pot even though it was actively growing because it was constantly drying out and getting really wrinkled leaves so i'm hoping i didnt just sentence it to death lol i wasjust tired of it needing watered every single time i looked at it basically LOL
Good question! The answer is not really hahah 🤷♀️ not that I can notice at least. The water quality where I am is really good, so it probably wasn't necessary. But, I will definitely be using it to fill my humidifier in the winter :) and I do use it for more sensitive plants, like my terrarium begonia!
I have a large SOH, but the pot is quite bare, not because it’s lost leaves, but because I started them from cuttings I grew in water, and therefore what sticks out of the soil are the stems. I know if you propagate them with the butterfly method that is not likely to happen since the leaf will be what’s gonna be sitting on soil (does that make sense?). Do you know how I could fill out my pot now when I already have a very long plant and can not butterfly propagate anymore, because it requires higher humidity for that.. ideally place the pot in a bag or place a dome over it, but again, I have a long plant so I can’t really do that 🙁
I’ve been meaning to pick up a string of hearts, so this video was well timed! Hearing that they seem to be pest resistant is music to my ears; I got an Alocasia cuprea recently that had a bad case of spider mites, and although I think they’re gone, I’m still treating out of PTSD from how bad it was (the shop owner picked it out for me, otherwise I would have seen them lol). It was only $4, which is insanely good for an Alocasia cuprea for where I live, so it’s a give and take situation, I suppose 😂
I absolutely love Ceropegia, it's an amazing beginner plant for a lot of people and taught me so much about caring for plants. It's one of those plants that really goes to show the importance of what the leaves look like.
Tiny leaves despite good lighting = Needs more water
Leaves are lacking the silver markings = Needs more light
Leaves are a good size, if not large, but grow in a bit curled inward = You're doing a great job on watering, but it needs more light
Leaves are super wrinkled and soft, stem is in okay condition = Needs more water
Tiny leaves despite good watering habits = Needs more light
White, powdery substance popping up on the leaves or stem = More airflow and treat for powdery mildew (surprisingly, Neem works well for this)
Oldest leaves occasionally yellow and fall off = Completely normal!
Thank you for this ❤ So helpful 😊
I just got my string of hearts a few days ago, thanks for the tips! 😭 Now I'm worried mine won't get enough light bc I only have a north east facing window :(
UPDATE: I got a grow light bulb for my desk lamp, and now it's doing much better! It was doing okay in the North facing, but the new growths were very far apart and the leaves growing curled. Now I leave it under the light ~15 hrs, and the vines are fuller and the leaves flat and pretty!

I found out watering my SOH more often really helped. Definitely going to get a variegated one.
I hope you had a good time camping this weekend. Please post another pic of Olive in her little life jacket. String of-s grow like beasts
Great information I appreciate you and your plants are beautiful ❤️❤️❤️ have a great week ahead.
I know you have definitely taken propagations of your string ofs in other videos but I would love a in depth prop video for these! Thanks Fern ❤
Also, do you have any thoughts/opinions on string of pearls care, propagation etc?
I grow string of hearts in my terrarium. Yes, they are thirstier than people think.

My variegated soh grows about 10x slower than regular.
I live in a very dry area. I have to keep my sings of things and alocasias in dishes of water and they do great. You have a beautiful collection.
Thank You very helpful love I’m new plant parent thank You ❤
I'm looking forward to this information as I haven't been successful with hearts 💕

Some turtles would be so cute to add to your strings! If you like them obvi 🥰 they’re one of my favorite strings

Ahhhh, interesting observation. I will have to keep this in mind, thanks for sharing!
I need all the care video info plus propagation for these plants!! Love all your content btw 😊
I love my string of bananas I too got at the beginning of Spring and it's grown quite a bit
Thank you for sharing, there are impressed me, I knew a few only, I learn a lot from your video, thank you very much , love from Australia
Thank you very much for watching :)
I have a variegated soh, it was a 6 in cutting, I cut it up to do the butterfly method in soil, and all but one of them died lol. I have fallen in love wiht your string of spades and I just bought one for myself :)
The blooms of the string of needles are just like the string of hearts
I just got a couple SOH cuttings, great info. Love your channel.
Your space that you revamped recently looks awesome behind you. So pretty and lush looking.
when propagating, i’ve had success with doing a combination of strand cuttings and the butterfly method. the butterfly method helps to fill out the base while the strands get it trailing faster rather than having to start with solely single node cuttings
Love it!! & I dig the La Dispute shirt!❤
Yes please, it would be fun to see your whole propagation process!
Thank you so much for the info! I want my first string of hearts to be happy before I get more. I deffy learned that they want water from a trip i went on and sis almost unalived herself. You can place a pot with soil in the middle of the plant until the hearts root. after rooting you cut the strings and you are left with two plants. put the two plants together in one new pot and you get a fuller plant 😊
I haven't been brave enough to move into 'string of' plants yet but I'm bookmarking this vid as essential re-watching when I do! Thanks Fern. :)
So nice to see your collection.
I have all of the same “string of”’s as you except for the silver glory and I do have regrets. I’ve seen the silver glory at plant swaps but, never got any bcuz I thought they were to similar to string of hearts. Seeing your silver glory I realize they do look different, like you said. I currently have an insane crazy mess of string of hearts in my greenhouse, it’s madness and overwhelming - they def grow fast!
Can you make a full length vid about propagation? Would be very appreciated
Thanks for the advice, I have two quite long, ready for cutting and propagation 👌🍃🤗
Ughhh all this content!!! I’m loving it ❤️
Thank you for talking about more regular watering! When I first got one of the standard variety, I had read to let them completely dry out and wait until you can bend the leaves also. Shame that there's so much incorrect info out there, thank you for the truth! Might be a dumb question, but do the varigated ones also produce the little root balls near the nodes?
Have a great week! String of need way more water than you would think and bright direct light 14 -16 hours a day!! Thank God for grow lights!!!
😄Will try to save what's left of it after the fungus gnats almost destroyed it 😅
Lol! Wishing you luck! 🍀
i feel like i’ve gone through that learning experience re:watering with some of my hoya (specially my compacts). i’ve always read that you should treat them like succulents and to only water them the leaves are soft and bendable, because of their thick, succulent leaves - but their roots are so thin and delicate, they can’t store as much water as true succulents. i had to cut off all the (dead) roots on one plant in my compacta pot and reroot in water because of this. but now it’s doing so well with regular watering!!!❤
I cannot root those for anything -.-
I love hanging vines too! String of Hearts are tied for my favorite species, next to golden pothos. Love the vining and easy propagation 💚
I sometimes just pin the ends into the soil and the cut it when it roots. 🤷♀️.
Loving all this new content Fern! 🥰
I recommend string of pearls 😊 they are so cool. I do have string of dolphins and variegated hearts ❤️ love all of them! I would love to have silver glory too because I love silver leaves as well! Thanks for your care tips!
Your silver glory is so nice! I can't wait for the day I can get one myself, it's been one of my wishlist plants for a while.
This was a very helpful video. Lots of good info. Thanks so much Fern. 💚🌱
Ooo I would love a start to finish prop video ✨
My needles are flowering now and yes just like the string of hearts
I remember you mentioned about watering in a previous video, and it really helped my SOHs! Thank you for that 💚
My variegated SOH are a lot less full than the regular ones, don't know why it's not thriving as much. Love your content 🌱
This was SUPER helpful for this newbie plant mama!
Your string of plants are so pretty! I just got my first string of plant the same day you posted this video! I hope I do good. I’ll deff take you tips and yes I would love for you to do a start to finish video on propagations. Love you and you videos so much!
G💚💚D For Y💚U Fern.... Doing Such A G💚💚D J💚B With Your String Of Plants!!!
Good lock with your VSOH! I got one a few month ago and it’s been going crazy in my south window! The leaves are FUSHIA and gorgeous 😍
So jealous of how well your string of hearts propagate. I’ve used water, sphag, perlite and it’s rotted in all of them. Not sure what I’m doing wrong .
Thanks for the video. String of is something I still occasionally struggle with though my string of pearls is actually doing well now as is my small v. string of hearts though I definitely want to grow it bigger.
think my string of broken hearts was underwatered and lost leaves, but decided to grow a few new compact leaves, but a few days later dropped them.
maybe it's not meant to be
la dispute sweater got you another sub!
My turtles are in my North facing bay window. Everything else is in a partially shaded east facing window 🤷♀️
Are they growing on a north facing window? 🙏🤗
My string loves to stay moist... Just very even.
I've been propagating my string of spades (together with my string of turtles and string of dolphins) in my perlite prop box. Every node touching perlite has grown roots. Maybe you should try again 😊
Great video!! Thanks, Fern 🥰
i repotted my string of hearts into a slightly bigger pot even though it was actively growing because it was constantly drying out and getting really wrinkled leaves so i'm hoping i didnt just sentence it to death lol i wasjust tired of it needing watered every single time i looked at it basically LOL
I'm sure you did the right thing - it's frustrating when they dry out so fast!
Love your La Dispute shirt! Did you see them in Vancouver earlier this month?? I'd never been to the Vogue Theatre venue before, it was really cool 😎
Cute plants they are for sure,💚🌵🌱☘️
Hi Fern!! Have you noticed any difference with your plants since you started using the water filter?
Good question! The answer is not really hahah 🤷♀️ not that I can notice at least. The water quality where I am is really good, so it probably wasn't necessary. But, I will definitely be using it to fill my humidifier in the winter :) and I do use it for more sensitive plants, like my terrarium begonia!
YOUR RING OMG
Thank you 🫶
What strong of plant would you recommend as a first buy? Love the video as always
Always the beast videos thank you🍀🍀🍀🍀
I have mountain orange (I think) and the pink varieties....can I plant them together? Or is that a bad idea?
Yes you can! I love doing mixed pots.
Do you need to mist them occasionally?
I have a large SOH, but the pot is quite bare, not because it’s lost leaves, but because I started them from cuttings I grew in water, and therefore what sticks out of the soil are the stems. I know if you propagate them with the butterfly method that is not likely to happen since the leaf will be what’s gonna be sitting on soil (does that make sense?). Do you know how I could fill out my pot now when I already have a very long plant and can not butterfly propagate anymore, because it requires higher humidity for that.. ideally place the pot in a bag or place a dome over it, but again, I have a long plant so I can’t really do that 🙁
I also use osmocote with succes
Is it normal for the string of pearls to feel sticky when you touch them? That’s how mine are. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you!
La dispute shirt 🤩
I’ve been meaning to pick up a string of hearts, so this video was well timed! Hearing that they seem to be pest resistant is music to my ears; I got an Alocasia cuprea recently that had a bad case of spider mites, and although I think they’re gone, I’m still treating out of PTSD from how bad it was (the shop owner picked it out for me, otherwise I would have seen them lol). It was only $4, which is insanely good for an Alocasia cuprea for where I live, so it’s a give and take situation, I suppose 😂
Yes,they need more water 👍
How do you get the rainbow effect in your background? Please tell me
