Thanks Maarten. Another great video! One question. When doing the tulip iso comparisons (around 16:15 of your video), does it appear that the purple tulip is much sharper or better focused for the Sony a6400 than with the Fuji X-T30? I have a Fuji X-T30, and my only concern with it is that in some pictures, the subject I was focusing on doesn't seem sharp or in focus, which is what it looks like with your tulips. I'm trying to improve my photography skills because when I posted about this on a Fuji forum, the consensus was that it was user error, but it appears that at least for your tulip photos, you're seeing the same thing. I'm not however seeing this same issue when you had the side by side pictures of the doll testing the color profiles of the two cameras around the 21 min mark (they both look equally sharp). Any thoughts? Thanks!
What a detailed comparison! Thanks a lot. It‘s still a complicated choice. I prefer the Sony‘s form factor because of its better grip but I wish it would get the first-class compact APS-C lenses Fuji makes. I’m still a bit overwhelmed with the huge feature-sets of both compared to my Canon 100D.
Do you think shutter speed is enough to chose between the two? I do shoot alot portraits in mid daylight (panasonic Gx8), but i am afraid of the sony a6400 limit sutter of 1/4000. Thanks for the great video.
Hi Maarten, I'd like to ask you a couple of questions concerning Sony a6400 (and other Sony Alpha cameras). Are there any downsides to set DRO AUTO ON every time? I've seen there are many differences in dynamic range between DRO ON ad OFF. I set DRO AUTO ON both on Alpha 7R3 and on 6400 and when I develop raw files shot in studio or outdoor I can’t see any problems, even when scenarios are demanding. So, is there a reason to set DRO AUTO OFF? The second question maybe is related to the first one: I set clipping light alert on “100+” but often the blinking alert does not match with the histogram. After some tests I’ve seen that the histogram “says” the truth: if the lights are not clipped in the histogram they are not clipped in the RAW too. I’ve been working as a professional for about 10 years but I switched to Sony a few months ago and this is the first time I observe this behaviour in a camera. Is it possible that the 100+ clipping alert and the histogram representation show a different situation because DRO AUTO is set ON? Thank you in advance. Sorry if I have gone on too long. ps: Thank you for another great video.
Thanks for your kind words. The DRO settings do not affect the RAW files, these are adjustments made in processing the JPEG. I'm not sure that the 100+ zebra is useful for stills, which have a wider dynamic range than the 100 IRE units allowed for pro broadcast video production. I would agree with your plan to refer to the histogram. I don't think that the DRO setting affects the histogram, but I haven't tried to determine this.

After I started doing more research I realized I could get the a6400 BRAND NEW for slightly less than the used Fuji/lens combo and of course the a6400 is far more advanced and future-proofed than the older Fuji. Just like if we click a pic from iPhoneit is very short per and very attractive as compared to the other normal phone. Similarly I just wanted to know that is a pic click by Fuji camera is lot better than the sony 6400 or is it the same, just a minor difference . If the differenceis big then I would consider Fuji and if the difference is lil. I dont wont to go in post processing work as i am a fresher and dont have lot of knowledge of post processing.
Between these two, the quality is very similar. And both have many colour presets (film simulations on Fujifilm, creative style on Sony) to choose from - as well as many options to adjust those presets to your specific preferences in camera. This video was meant to help you make the choice based on the factors that are important to you.
@@MaartenHeilbron thanks for your review. it really helped me. I have made my mind to buy Fuji xt30. @@MaartenHeilbron no I don't have an external recorder yet. Color grading depends upon how much can be achieved in camera. I plan to buy 35 f1.4 for Fuji. Sony maybe a similar focal length in sigma.
In that case, the X-T30 is likely the better choice. Better quality in camera recording and the film simulations make for better in camera colour adjustment.

@@ozancelikigne I've found that my viewers are not very interested in reviews of those kinds of products and accessories, so I prefer to concentrate on cameras.
As I would characterize those as DSLRs, I'm not understanding what you mean by "semi". Or maybe you should just state your original question in a different way. What are you trying to determine? If you are asking if the Sony A6400 is a quality device with full manual controls that can produce high quality images, the answer is "yes".
Maarten Heilbron thank u sir , just I need to know that, this model can give professional output or not and obviously as per my experience about Sony cybershot DSC-H300, Sony is best than Canon or Nikon, also I have Canon 6dmark ii just I need some little focus performance for low light condition.
@@jatishpandav Both the A6400 and the X-T30 have all the features needed to produce images that are the equal of any camera with an APSC sensor. Whether the output is professional is in your hands. All of these brands produce a range of cameras, from entry level to the highest quality, capability and durability. If you are looking for better low light performance, try a faster lens. If you are having trouble with focus in low light situations, it's likely a question of familiarity. Try manual focus.
@@MaartenHeilbron hi , I hope you can review the upcoming XT30 mark 2 soon , cause I’m considering it, but I currently using the a6400 s as ms the Sony A7C. Both are very good cam, but the Fujifilm is unique. Thanks 🙏
I judge them to be about the same, the difference comes from the selection of colour profiles (film emulation). Yes, both can shoot with a lock on AF and stay with the subject, particularly if a face is identified.
@@RodolphosTechchannel If all you're looking for is the ultimate dynamic range, Sony has that, using the SLog2 gamma curve - but at a cost, as the image is very noisy, particularly in the blacks. And with a lower bandwidth recording, unless you are using an external recorder. How much range do you need? What display device are you using? What's its dynamic range? Great video btw.. but, believing that your experience in taking photos is great, around 16:10 of your video, is that tulip deliberately out of focus? I doubt that you have done such mistake in comparing high ISO noise of both cameras. It is obvious that the focus is behind the tulip and is on the leaf of the plant. Why you are using the flower to compare it when it is not in focus? Haven't you noticed it? You have taken all that time to record this video, edit and upload on you tube with such big mistake? If i take that fact where the focus is and watch closely i see that the ISO noise and the sharpness of the x-t30 is way better. Be careful, somebody may think that you are favouring the sony camera. ;-)
Thank you for your kind words and your detailed note. I thought it would be easy to find the screen recording to prove (at least to myself) that the focus point was the same, but I apparently was not recording while I took those images. So, looking at the images I could agree with your assessment, it seems plausible. However, it would never be my intention to any camera unfairly.

Hey, I am from india. I am a beginner photographer. I am doing photography just for my hobby. Now I had planned to upgrade by camera from smartphone to a digital camera. But, I am struggling in finding a perfect camera for me. I have shortlisted five cameras for me. Please suggest one winner from the list. 1. Sony alpha a6400 2. Fujifilms X-T30 3. Nikon D7500 4. Nikon Z50 I have shortlisted these camera's because they comes in my budget range of about $838 to $1188 Note- I don't care about the videography at all. Please pick the winner only from photography prospective.
In fact, although the menus are complex and the capabilities far exceed the needs of most photographers, in reality cameras are much, much easier. Auto-exposure, including AutoISO with manual aperture AND shutter, autofocus, auto white balance ... I could go on. And nearly all cameras have a full auto mode, with scene detection that makes it easy for anyone to take great photos. You have higher quality images than ever at lower cost per image than ever. These are the best of times for photography.
That's unfair - I think I gave some pretty good examples in the video that demonstrate Fujifilm's focus is the equal and in some cases better than the Sony.

How about the record limit both of the camera?
All video features are detailed in part two.
Hi . Bro pl suggest me which should i buy fuji xt30 vs sony a6400
My priority is completing with a 6400but my biggest priority is the image should be very beautiful.
Fuji is lil better than sony then I would go for soni a6400.
on RUclips Fuji has created a lot of hype of their colour presets .
Pl suggest
Ps.
Can you suggest me that is fuji xt 30 with kitlens 18-135 with f3.5 has equally good blur(bookeh) effect as compared to the other kitlens 18-55 withh f2.8 or is there significantly a high difference in bookeh effect.
@@tusharsharma5237 The 18-55 has substantially better bokeh.
Hi! Would you really recommend xt30 or a6400 to a short film maker for its video features usability?
Hard call. Do you have an external monitor? How much colour grading do you plan to do? Which lenses would you buy?
@@MaartenHeilbron no I don't have an external recorder yet. Color grading depends upon how much can be achieved in camera.
I plan to buy 35 f1.4 for Fuji. Sony maybe a similar focal length in sigma.
In that case, the X-T30 is likely the better choice. Better quality in camera recording and the film simulations make for better in camera colour adjustment.
@@MaartenHeilbron can I fit separate camera for stills & film making in the same budget of xt30+35f1.4?
I wouldn't think so.
@Maarten Heilbron: An excellent comparison that has deserved far more attention, viewers and likes. Thank you for your great work, please keep it up. The least thing I could do in return for such great work is a subscription. (No "thank you" required, the pleasure is all mine.)
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment (and subscribe).
Great review! Xt30 captured way more dynamic range.
Thanks for the kind words. How did you come to this conclusion?
@@MaartenHeilbron Hi, you are welcome in some test i saw fuji controlled bright areas well and it got more information compared to sony aps-c cameras. I like the eterna film simulation. Its the most natural look.
@@MaartenHeilbron and i have a question sir, I m going to buy xt30 with kit lens(18-55) and a zoom lens. Im thinking about to buy 100-400 with a teleconverter. Could you test 1.4x or 2x teleconverters? I want to know is there a quality and sharpness loss. Thanks
@@ozancelikigne I've found that my viewers are not very interested in reviews of those kinds of products and accessories, so I prefer to concentrate on cameras.
Can i use Sony a6400 for photography as Semi DSLR??
Could you please explain what you mean by “semi dslr”?
@@MaartenHeilbron like Canon 80d, nikon d7200
As I would characterize those as DSLRs, I'm not understanding what you mean by "semi". Or maybe you should just state your original question in a different way. What are you trying to determine? If you are asking if the Sony A6400 is a quality device with full manual controls that can produce high quality images, the answer is "yes".
Maarten Heilbron thank u sir ,
just I need to know that, this model can give professional output or not and obviously as per my experience about Sony cybershot DSC-H300, Sony is best than Canon or Nikon, also I have Canon 6dmark ii just I need some little focus performance for low light condition.
Which of the two takes better pictures?
They both take excellent pictures.

Always nice to read kind words from my viewers. Thanks very much.
Is the HD and 4k video quality better in the xt30? Looks like it to me. Also does af lock on as good with Fuji when recording video?
I judge them to be about the same, the difference comes from the selection of colour profiles (film emulation). Yes, both can shoot with a lock on AF and stay with the subject, particularly if a face is identified.
Maarten Heilbron which one has video with better dynamic range on flog.
Until we all have HDR2020 sets, you'll have to adjust the range in post to display.
a6400 or X-T20? which is better?
Both are good cameras, you must decide for yourself which is better for you, based on your needs and intentions.
I am gonna get XT 30 tommorow
Why?
@@MaartenHeilbron Because he wants light to bounce off material objects and then enter into a photographic device so that he may reproduce its reflection for later viewing both by himself and others for some sort of internal mechanism that may induce reflection, satisfaction, approval, happiness, titillation ....
@@monsieurhassan I wish I'd thought of that possibility.

I haven't watched the video yet, but the Fuji does it for me. I love the manual dials and the classic design of the Fujis. Reminds me of my first camera, a Pentax Spotmatic SP II.

@@MaartenHeilbron I did, thank you. You manage to put a lot of detail into you reviews, which is very informative.
@@therealjamespickering Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.
@@MaartenHeilbron i want to ask you.. do you find fujifilm iso results better than sony's as i do? I am surprised in those findings. Do you think selling a Canon 80D to purchase a Sony a6400 is a good movie?
I don't know what you feel is lacking in the 80D, or which features of the A6400 you find particularly appealing, but for as much as I like the A6400, it's likely not a change I'd make.

1. Sony alpha a6400
2. Fujifilms X-T30
3. Nikon D7500
4. Nikon Z50
I have shortlisted these camera's because they comes in my budget range of about $838 to $1188
Note- I don't care about the videography at all. Please pick the winner only from photography prospective.
I'd take the X-T30 or the Z50. Let your hand and your heart decide.
May I know the reason why you not choose sony alpha a6400 and nikon d7500
All are, as you have probably already found, very good choices. You asked me to choose one.

Man, you gotta be an engineer to use some of these cams these days. What happened to when you used to put the film in and pull the lever.
If you want something cute, get the xt30 and if you want photos in focus, get the sony.
That's unfair - I think I gave some pretty good examples in the video that demonstrate Fujifilm's focus is the equal and in some cases better than the Sony.
@@MaartenHeilbron I second that statement since I've missed hardly any shots owing to slow or bad AF in my X-T20. I'd choose the Fujifilm X-T30 over the Sony A6400 or any other Sony APS-C camera any day of the week.
