This is a great method! I use it especially in the spring with larger pots that I’m filling with several smaller plants. I put all of the smaller pots in the large one and fill the whole thing with soil. Then pull out each of the planters so I have the right number of holes and pop in the plants. Viola!! Large planter done in no time.
Really love your channel even though I have only 1 cactus. Been watching you for a while and you have very good tips and tricks that could be helpful for my outdoor plants too... and btw I think my place in croatia has more rainfall than Sheffield. Look it up, rijeka is the name of the city, could be that rainfall is more consistent in uk, but my place is having more by amount
@@SheffieldMadePlants yes, summers are hot, dry, droughty but fall is just opposite. During the november we had more than 500mm of rainfall during few days. Extreme showers for 10 days straight sometimes. It really could be gray and depressive 😅
Depending on the roots of the plant I'm repotting and the soil, I sometimes try to carve the hole in the new pot with my hands or a small garden tool. But I have to try this.
I have been planning to use this method next time I plant, which my be as soon as Jan, but also may be months later! Depends on my health & IF & how much it improves! I absurdly HATE & DESPISE filling a new pot w/ the plant "in the way"! This doesn't look near as messy! Thanks! You're the 1st to show me each step! So far I'd only seen the making of the pots new hole & the finished product! I figured it was cleaner & easier, but your video shows that it can be both! Thank you! I wish you & your family, a Merry Christmas, & have a Blessed New Year!
Brilliant!! And there may be thousands of us out here saying, "Did you see that?! Why didn't I think of that! He's done it again!" Multitudinous thanks.
Great idea! I don't usually want my houseplants growing more than the size they're already at (lest my room space is taken over completely by plants): So if my plant gets rootbound, I use the method you showed in a previous video of simply cutting the roots in half and repotting it in the same pot again with newly added soil.
Thank you! I'm not the only one thinking these people complaining about using a pot too big to repot your plant are nuts. Ive been growing plants for at least 35 years and never get root rot from using too big of a pot😂🤣. I think all those people that think that read the same home and garden magazine from some editor that didn't know what they were talking about and has never even grown a weed. If you water your plant too much too often is how you get root rot. You don't allow the roots to get the oxygen they need, to NOT rot!
I killed my first plant by pressing and compacting the new soil too much during a repot. It ended up being so compressed that the water just pooled on top and wouldn't even get absorbed by the soil. I loosened the soil a bit but it still held onto so much water that it wouldn't drain properly and before long it started growing mould. Going to try repotting a new plant with this method. Wish me luck.
3:38, wait hold up, so the plant pot [brown] is inside another pot [gray] as its home? I'm confused. So the potted plant is on a saucer inside a bigger pot without a saucer...?! I'm so confused.
Nice video. I think I need to report my Ivory Coast alocasia. Ooo you have an anthurium. 😚Can you do a future video on anthurium care. I want to buy one in the spring time.
@@SheffieldMadePlants thank you. I have heard from Kaylee Ellen and Houseplantygoodness channel that the Anthurium Clarinervium and the same one that you have are best for beginners.
I was thinking the same thing. You could use an unused pot the size of the one you're repotting ( or close to the size) to sit inside the new larger pot to avoid contaminating the new soil/pot.
Never heard of people advising against big pots before. All mine are big pots from 10Ltrs all the way up to a pot that weighs about 60kg WHEN EMPTY lol. The smaller ones all have water dishes but the water I give hardly ever reaches the bottom and never pools. These are generally small plants to like a Philodendron Lemon Lime.
Bloody genius mate (that's a California guy trying to sound hip in a UKish way and probably failing miserably). Oh well you know what they say about us Yanks: You can always tell a Yank, you just can't tell them much🙄
Why are you judging me for back filing for 5 minutes with a bonsai trowel and shaking my plant violently until it fits then watering it only to have to add more soil? 🤣 I actually did try this method but my soil just collapsed in on itself as soon as i removed the pot. I amend with a ton of perlite but I'm actually surprised an airoid mix stayed so well. Did you moisten it first? 🤔
I am so sorry this is totally kind of off topic but... I need help! I ordered a 6-in spider plant from an online Depot... They told me when it would arrive, but alas it arrived two days earlier and I didn't know so it sat in my mailbox through a hard freeze. Suffice it to say it looks bad. Hoping for the best, I potted it up with all new potting soil, with plenty of perlite for drainage and it is just limp, all the leaves are see-through and almost mushy. Is there anything I can do? Please and thank you for any ideas. ❤🪴

Great presentation! For pots without the holes at the bottom, I use a soldering iron pen and works perfectly 💚🙃💚

I agree!
I can see it if its absolutely massive but a few sizes bigger shouldn’t be a big deal

Debunk!
1:53 how does your excess water freely drain away ?
🤔
Hello from Puerto Rico!!! Loved the impression tip for repotting!!! 🙋🏼♀️🪴🌿
Glad it was helpful!
Wow that would be good idea with my plant I have because is a pothos plant they grow fast so this is a good idea
Sweet! I'm off to try that right now!

Where do you get your soil from ?
Sybotanica now

Dude! I need to do this! Do you recommend repotting in winter? Conventional wisdom says no, but I am concerned that my guys need a repot now.
Yes you can anytime of year
WOW....PERFECT

Wow great idea 💡 thanks for sharing 🩷💚❤

I always go 2 pots up when repoting
BRILLIANT!!
Do you grow any of your plants in just water? Like cuttings that you just decide to leave because they look pretty?
I have done yes. It can work well
Just a quick remark: make sure to sanitize used pots before repotting another plant in it. Unclean pots can propagate pests to your entire collection.
I was thinking the same thing. You could use an unused pot the size of the one you're repotting ( or close to the size) to sit inside the new larger pot to avoid contaminating the new soil/pot.

Tends to be one of the main bits of advice I hear
This is so smart I can’t believe this isn’t the standard 😭
Ive been doing like this for years. My question is.. dont you ever trim the roots back before repotting? Like i do with bonsai?
Yes I do if I want to keep the pot small. Also can be healthy for them
this! is! so! smart! 😱

Spider plants recover well normally. I’d cut it right back and stick it under a grow light
