After your last video on Mycorrhizal Fungi, I started using it on some of my plants. Something remarkable happened. My Kalanchoe has started to bloom for the 1st time in 3 years!! I didn't put it in the dark. No dormancy period, no water deprivation, no voodoo spells.... it was definitely the Mycorrhizal Fungi. It's like a Christmas miracle thanks to you!! Amen.
in comparison to yourself Im new to this plant nurturing malarky. 30 houseplants and counting...I have surrendered worrying about my peace lilles...I can do no more...so, I have made ceramic blooms and put them in the pots so it looks like I have blooms! it also reminds the plant what they are capable of...when the whim takes them...thank you for all your good advice...
Thanks, Rich. This is a great reference video for searching out your tips on different things. I've got a light meter but haven't played with it much yet. Watered ol' Richard the ZZ the other day and he's still kicking. I laughed at what you said recently about how maybe they just take a long time to die. Either way, he appears to be hanging in there. I love the amount of light you have now in comparison to your struggle for enough light in your old house. Stay warm out there! I didn't know you had snow.
My mate went off to India and bequeathed me his spider plant. That was in 1969 and I lost count of the number of plants I'd killed, decades ago. Even though I've more experience of growing indoor plants than most, this is a channel where I learn a little something new, now and then, so a good place for beginners - and others - to check out. BTW, while putting off buying a moisture meter, lifting a plant by it's pot, will give you a good idea of the water available. With practice, it's a handy and reliable way of figuring out if it needs a drink.
My biggest game changer was when I started using clear plastic pots and slip potting it into a decorative pot. That way you can check the moisture by just looking at it. It also allows you to see if it’s root bound without messing with the roots.
I've started doing the same. I always waited a few weeks at least before repotting new plants, but they went right into decorative pots. The clear pots are no economical, too.
Light. Full sun, you can see your shadow in full detail. Bright indirect light, shadow is dark but not as full and has a definitive outline. Medium light, shadow is dark fuzzy, no outline. Low light has a faint shadow very transparent. Hope that helps out everyone!
I love my moisture meters. I have 4 2 downstairs and 2 upstairs. I never change my plants dirt till it's root bound. I make my own soil bcus it's to expensive buying specialty small bags of soil 10 percent off is nothing when 16oz of soil is 40.00
I got the moisture meter too and my plants are doing so much better. Also adding the water conditioner he recommends. Makes a big difference. Light meter is next - Santa??
it's been an absolute experience to follow along with your plant journey & you have made me more comfortable with my plants too. Merry Christmas Mr Sheffield :)
You and your family must have worked really, really hard to get such a wonderful living room! It’s a pleasure to watch. Particularly with the sun coming through your windows. Love your videos! (I recommend people to be careful with neem oil, tho)
I agree with your tip regarding pre-mixed potting soil. I was mixing all my soil, with the challenges you noted. Then I discovered Molly’s Aroid Mix. I’ve recently started using Molly’s succulent mix. I’m still mixing my own for non-aroids and non-succulents. Game changer! Thanks for your video! 🎉
I drink a lot of distilled water by the gallons so, i save the jug fill with water leave for a week or more (add water conditioner now)and it was working great. I also add fertilizer/plant food to one or two and alternate when i water. This eliminates flushing and over fertilizing. I love your channel Rich, those awesome big windows in your new home make me so envious. But, i guess I'll just stick to my low light and grow lights😂😂 bcus I won't be finding a home with good windows in this area that is within my budget.
My biggest fear (recently)... I bought a silver sword that was half dead and marked down to 4.99$ (CAD) and decided to pull a "Mr. Sheffield" and cut it right back. Not only is it thriving but I ended up with (at last count) NINE growth points. Proof that 1) fears are often times just silly and 2) even seasoned planty peeps can learn from you (esp. it is okay to pull out the scissors!!). Appreciate you to the moon and back.
Hi Rich, your babies look great in their new home. You have shelves just like me. I guess we learn from each other. Hope you and your family have a great holiday. Keep your loved ones close. We are not promised tomorrow. Love you all the years and will watch how they grow taller then. Till next year. Be safe. Love you ❤ Billie O:-)
Thanks for the tips, I got the moisture meter and the stuff for making the tap water better, that you recommended. I will definitely try this Mycorrhizal fungicide powder and try that. I have a Calathea Furry feather, that’s driving me nuts, no matter what I give it, it’s still not happy, it’s on its last chance now and then I give up with it and it’s going in the bin😂 Love your videos, they make me laugh 😅 as well as giving me good advice. The house is looking great 👍
I have yet to have a moisture meter that lasted more than 3-6 months. It would give me dry readings for plants I knew didn’t need watering. So frustrating
Mealy bug infestation bc I didn't inspect my dracaena. The shawshank remedy I've seen (with added dish soap and alcohol) fills me with dread. Send thoughts and prayers etc..
The first tip about the soil I didn’t know that. I have a question Iv chopped a rubber plant in half and Iv propagated it in water it now has roots when do you recommend potting it in soil should I wait until spring or can I do it now? Thanks
@@SheffieldMadePlants ok thanks for you help it’s only at about 1cm maybe it’s slow Wes because of the winter, Im more concerned if it will cause the plant to rot sat in the water for so long
1:40 Yikes!!!! That sticky butterfly that you have shoved down in the plant also speaks to the fact of overwatering that plant. So many gnats on that sticky butterfly😂 okay back to learning…
My humidity is like 25% during the winter and my plats are doing fine, even the variegated ones. I dont buy new plants during the winter though, that would probably kill them instantly 🤣
Nothing worse than looking at a plant expecting growth and nothing has changed, slow growing plants are the bane of my existence 🤣 wish everything grew faster
It surprises me that you insist on moisture meters being reliable. I find that the more chunky the soil mix is, the less accurate the moisture meter is, for obvious reasons. You are more likely to get a ‘dry read’ with a chunky substrate, as opposed to a dense one.
@SheffieldMadePlants yes the rex , it looked fuller , mine is decling I have the mauri haze, and it has lost the shimmer and dropping leaves but the roots are fine , I don't know if it could be dormancy?

Mr. Sheffield narrates in my head while I do plant chores 😂
Love your new home with all the windows. Have a Merry Christmas and the start of a new year.
You should get way more views and subs. The interesting and calm way of editing the video, and taking care of the plants so nicely is just incredible
Thank you 😊

Yes! Ive been using the fish tank water and my peace lily and other plants are looking amazing
Fish tank water is the best. Plants love it and you have to do a water change for the fish anyway so no point in wasting the water.
new place coming up nicely.lovely
Thanks!
The new place is just gorgeous.❤

I do not have a monstera because I don't have room. Maybe one day, but right now my focus is on propagating plants for students at a local college.

I have plenty of water from dehumidifier, would it be considered a chlorine-free?
I think so
@@SheffieldMadePlants Let’s see. I’m gonna buy one extra Drosera to experiment with to see if even carnivorous plants can survive on this water.

Hi! At 3:30 there's a plant with orange flowers. Wow! My fave color. What kind of plant is that? It looks like a tricky plant. 😮
It’s a Calathea. Can’t remember the exact name

Yeah I moved recently

Mycorrhizal fungi
✋🏽Mr Sheffield... Is it okay for plants to live in glass jars/objects/recycled bottle, with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage?
Yep just watch out for the algae
Just bought my first Treleaf trellis. I save some $$ using my Sheffield discount code. Thanks!
I'm so glad I found your channel.Just yesterday, I was wondering if I should water my plants with filtered water, and it looks like I have my answer.

Mr Sheffield I think I accidentally watered my bath & body of too much my leaves are dying what can I do?
😳
Oops I meant to say that I over watered my dieffenbachia and my leaves are dying is there anything I can do to save it.
Unfortunately, your soil company doesn't ship to the U.S. Do you have a recommendation for us in the states ??
Not that I’ve used sorry
Do you realize you have binned 187 plants?
😬
What brand of the light meter are you using? I kept my plants under sky light and they grew very leggy. I suspect they don't get enough light. Thanks.
I can’t remember the brand sorry
