Very important to note that not all FCs will support getting power to the receiver over USB on all UARTs. Be sure to research this if it's truly important. I'd also say the criticism of the remote losing link when the goggles lose link is pretty concerning. As someone that owns a Tango 2 Pro and was considering getting this remote for the sake of compatibility with the O3, I'm glad I found this video. Excellent information.

    • @Mangorille
      @Mangorille  Год назад +1

Good call out, you are correct not all FCs have a 5volt pad that is active with USB. For example, the SpeedyBee F7 V3 does whereas the SpeedyBee F7 mini does not. Note that the latest firmware does make this remote work better but if you already have a Tango 2, I wouldn't bother with this remote. You can even convert your Tango 2 to work with ELRS (I have a video where I did this with an internal module).

Would love to see the retest with the latest firmware!
I am on Crossfire with Vista and O3, getting another O3 and considering RC2 because the extra antenna maintenance, and keeping the stock of spares is a bit annoying. If the reliability issue is fixed and RC2 doesn't die when video link dies, RC2 is a strong alternative. My remote is a similar form factor, Jumper Pro

Unfortunately as I also have a dji pro 3 mini and an avata, I have to have both the dji and then have to use the tango 2 for my other drones. I wish dji would just open up a little so their planned obsolescence wouldn't hurt their customers so much. For the amount of money spent, their products should really have a longer life.

    AirUnit Bench work & overheating:
a 5 or 12 volt computer fan (doesn't need to be a full 120 mm, but fine if that's all you got)
I soldered a battery connector to a fan, (1s for 5volt & 3s for 12volt) so I can set the fan next to my quad on the bench.
I glued a magnet to the edge of the fan and put it on a 80mmx100mm scrap piece of 1/8th inch steel to stand it.
    Any sheet metal will do.
But a piece of double-sided sticky tape works fine.
It's a small project, in and of itself, but once you have the fan set up like this, now you can use it for other stuff on the bench too.

    Thank you for this
I'm stuck with the DJI RC1
$300 is a BIG hit with little secondary market interest.
I'd like to see DJI release a 2.4 ghz module to attach to the RC1 with all else necessary to work with the 03 AU.
What surprises me is that you can still buy the RC1 for $300. Why would it not come way down in price like the V2 goggles?
I suspect that DJI is helping retailers clear out inventory as I don't think you can buy the RC1 on the DJI store, any longer, at least not mode 2. If that holds true into the future, then it's safe to say DJI has abandoned ship on the RC1.
I too am switching to TBS T2, for all the reasons you sighted; especially the gimbals. I had the potato for a couple of weeks, the RC2 is difficult to get used to; especially for something as powerful as the potato.
We could always attach the TBS crossfire module to the DJI RC1, but it would still be big and bulky, and likely no longer supported, so...big hit.
DJI just works, but can be limiting, and I suspect all of the hybrid system (backward compatibility). and the resultant compromises is DJI's way of steering us all toward the 03 system.
DJI is a business, a very smart business.
Ultimately, it seems inevitable to move everything up to 03. For me, TBS T2, and 03 air unit this year 2023, and Goggles 2 next year 2024. Unless I win the lottery. All into 03 up front: DJI 03 AU $229, new radio and receiver $200 to $250, Goggles 2 $649. That's $1,078 to 1,128 for what we already have. Is the range, penetration and image quality worth it? Possibly.
So, start saving for 04, when it too will be inevitable.

    • @Mangorille

Well said, they haven't even made the Vista compatible with the V2 goggles yet so perhaps there will be a Christmas miracle and we will get something for the black remote. I agree, no interest in the secondary market for the V1 goggles or the black remote. I suspect I'll take mine to the grave with me ;)

If DJI gave us the Black controller for the 03 AirUnit, I probably would have stayed. But with the way they did it, I ended up going with HDzero's pre-sale on the goggles, and will be getting a Radiomaster. DJI was a great place to start, and I love the video quality, but the way they run the business, not so much. I love HDzero's open-source attitude, and customer first mindset. I also love DIY, and being able to tinker and experiment with stuff. So it was fun, DJI, but I see greener pastures ahead!

thanks for the review! I started FPV a few years ago, went straight into the DJI air unit system (never really used analog). Then when I got the DJI FPV with the smaller remote I loved it and couldn't wait for the Air Unit to move to the smaller Controller 2. I LOVE the DJI video system (besides the fact that their goggles don't really fit non-asian faces) but I sort of hate their drones -- always having to prove I'm allowed to fly, accept responsibility, upgrade firmware, update maps / DJI Fly, plug in my phone, etc. It was such a nice break to just be able to fly a non DJI drone, but with the air unit, and still get the great video but not all the nanny "features". I swear EVERY time I fly a DJI drone (which is admittedly not all that often) I ALWAYS have to update the firmware, etc before it will let me take off. And usually not having cell service where I fly, it would just end up as a totally wasted trip, and I'd come home angry. And now even worse with the Avata remote ID you cannot take off ever unless your phone is plugged in.
Then as I used it more, I soon realized the Controller 2 is not at all an upgrade from the original black transmitter -- be careful what you wish for I guess. So now I am looking at moving to the Crossfire system. Great to hear your comparison. I just placed an order. Thanks!!

    • @Mangorille
      @Mangorille  Год назад +2

Sounds like a similar experience to mine! :) Crossfire is great, biggest problem is that you need to make sure you can fit the antenna on your quad which can be difficult for smaller quads. I'm playing around with ELRS now as well and got a ELRS transmitter module into my Tango 2 pro so I can switch between both crossfire (for larger quads) and ELRS (for smaller quads). I have a few videos out on this, check my latest videos.

If you like gamepad style just get a Jumper T pro with built in ELRS 1w. Better gimbals than DJI, much much longer range and way cheaper.
Comparing the Jumper to the Tango it has a much lower latency link, more Hz options of 50, 150, 250 and 500 probably a couple more I forgot, it also uses LORA on all settings not just 50Hz like TBS does and the biggest one Jumper runs Edge Tx not some half baked Freedom tx that no one asked for and again is way cheaper than its opposition. Oh and the antenna are easier to fit than TBS and receivers are half the price or less and can be flashed easily over wifi. I just taught a new guy how to flash one in about 5 mins.

So you switched to ELRS FROM crossfire? Those extra steps to get it working in my experience wasn’t worth it. Crossfire just works and you don’t need a pc. I immediately switched back to crossfire after giving ELRS a 2 month trial. Way too many failsafes where crossfire held up easily. I guess that’s open source for ya. I’m not into waisting too much time doing endless research on which ELRS module, receiver to buy.

I think your decision to go away from the Controller 2 is a good one. IMO, it looks cheap, is double what it should sell for, and it's smart not to be happy with those tiny gimbals! The entire controller is just a bad value.
A Radiomaster Zorro is half the price, way better quality, and the same price with the AG01 metal full size gimbals! That's the value!
Crossfire is still hard to beat for rock solid connection! 😎🤘
The Nano receiver only weighs 0.7g, and for small whoops or other tiny micros, just use the wire antenna with the $25 version of the Nano. I use that antenna for all my micros.
I'm getting into Radiomaster Ranger and their ELRS receivers for it. But for whoops, where ultra lightweight is key, the AIO FC's with ELRS built in, in non SPI form, are the way to go, IMO. Keeps that FC so small and ultra light! 👍
