-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
-- Only two Pokemon learn Double-Team through level up: Pikachu & Scyther

This isnt the poliwag challenge, this is the "scott forgot to save for 10 minutes and has to reset" challenge
Hahaha yup
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I'm guessing level 66 poliwag at the end of this Yellow playthrough
Leave Brittney-moth alone!
i did that challenge often enough since i played pokemon for the first time when i was 5, my name isnt scott tho
I think I have one further optimization that might be important to bring up with Poliwag: I actually think that delaying teaching Ice Beam for as long as possible (to Lance ideally) and using Psychic for the entirety of the game will probably be a better strat. So many Grass-type Pokemon are part Poison in this generation, with only two being notable who aren't, which are Erika's Tangela and the Champion's Exeggcute/Exeggutor. But Exeggcute is probably never going to be a problem and Erika can just be delayed, and Psychic is so useful against Lorelei and Agatha that I imagine it's a time save in the long run.
This was a really fun video otherwise though. Poliwag is crazy good in this generation! Hypnosis is definitely unreliable but Amnesia is so good as a set-up move.
I was coming here to comment exactly this, and I advocate for a fixed Poliwag run! hahaha
I also wonder if for the final battle, going in with either of the following movesets would yield better results:
Surf / Amnesia / Rest / Hypnosis
Ice Beam / Amnesia / Rest / Hypnosis
Though the Ice Beam moveset would require foregoing Surf in favour of Bubblebeam or Hydro Pump as the late game Water move of choice.
( Don't mind me repeating here what I said in my own comment :x )
Yep I was watching this thinking this instantly.
I actually commented before reading… but yeah, that seems the idea.
I even say that hypnosis is a mistake even for Sabrina. If you eat up a flash twice is the same as gambling with hypnosis with alakazam/Kadabra… so just setup and sweep
Absolutely, you need a move that hits water and ice types for neutral damage. I’d love to see a follow up run where you keep ice beam in the bag until lance, so you can have psychic for vaporeon, Lorelei and Agatha.
I really liked how in Gen 2, Poliwag was available pretty early on. Despite the amnesia nerf, it still did fairly good. It also in the same area with the most chad Pokemon of all, Bellsprout, who still needs a run to show off how that one in the anime's first Pokemon League wasn't just for show when it gave the beat down.
Minor Correction, But that's only in Crystal. He's unobtainable early in both GS and their remakes
@@neptuniamarina4924 In Crystal you can also get early Teddiursa and Phanpy and Poliwag is also essential to cast them, thanks to Hypnosis (or Bellsprout with Wrap)
@@neptuniamarina4924 Depends on what you mean by “early.”
Poliwag can still be caught briefly after the first gym by using the Old Rod in Violet City.
@@skeetermania3202 I did not know that actually, i thought it was only obtainable with the Good Rod in Ecruteak.
@@neptuniamarina4924 You can obtain a lot of great Pokémon before the second gym. A lot of people don't know you can get a Geodude near the first route and basically destroy the first four gyms.
My only advice for all trainers of Kanto:
Hide somewhere and pray that the allmighty Poliwhirl spares you from its upcoming rampage, for that is the only thing you can do.
This is good advice.
Turns out abusing Gen 1 sleep and Gen 1 Amnesia gives great results!
I love that little tadpole, such a trooper.
Scott: "Welp, time to use Hypnosis"
Me: "Oh man, not again!"
Having seen the Jrose11 video on Poliwag I expected it to be a quick run. I didn't not expect the double crit at the end of the first run slowing things down so much. Great video and always enjoyable videos.
I think Seadra vs. Seaking would be a fun “Vs.” episode. In my opinion, they’re the two most forgotten water types in RBY (everyone remembers Kingdra because of Claire in GSC), they both have comparably mediocre stats and they both learn agility. Plus one is a “Sea Dragon” and one is a “Sea King”. And of course, great video as always!
Wow that was so unexpected! Poliwag is one of those mons I just never ever used in any of my playthroughs. There are so many water types to choose from, even from Gen 1, and that little guy sadly never made the cut. But the joke's on me cause it looks like I missed out! Looks like I was *sleeping* on an S-tier for years (hypnosis pun intended). Another great vid Scott!
YESSSS! POLI-GANG HAS BEEN HEARD! Thank you Scott! This tadpoles gonna prove how strong a little froge can be!
Poli Gang rise!
Poliswag is an underrated Pokémon and this was a surprisingly good run
I loved the “Hammer away” reference. It was just how Nintendo intended 😂. Great video Scott! I’m not sure if you’ve seen JRose’s latest video, but it, along with this video, showed how well first stage water types can perform in Gen 1.
Nothings better than cracking a cold one and watch your vids ❤ keep up the amazing work!
Your overlay(where you see the stats and attacks) has become the best of all poketubers :3
That sounds like an awesome way to enjoy the videos! I’ll have to join you sometime!
I know water types usually perform well, but I definitely wasn't expecting Poliwag to perform so well!
Poliwag got a great time!! I always liked this whole evolutionary line. Every time a solo/ V’s video comes out, it makes my day. Thank you Scott!
It’s been very fun going through all of your videos! The Poliwag line has always been dear to my heart! I remember having a little Poliwag squirt gun toy as a kid, which I loved
Am I missing something? Why is Surf neutral vs Gyarados? It resists Surf and Ice Beam is neutral. So if I am not wrong Surf is 71,25 power while Ice Beam is 95.
Great content anyways
I thought the same thing. But you beat me to it.
Gen 1 has a quirk and only mentions if an attack is super effective or not based on one of the types of the Pokémon. The damage uses another formula but that may be the reason why it looked like Surf was neutral against a Water/Flying Pokémon like Gyarados.
@@FernandoRafaelNogueiraReis If you look at 26:06 the game says "not every effective". I know what you are talking about, if a double typed mon gets hit by a move one type is weak and one type is resistent it only takes the first type for the message, despite using both for damage calculation. So Flamethrower vs Lapras (Water/Ice) will show "not very effective", why it would say "super effective" when the typing in the game would be Ice/Water. But this isnt relevant for the Gyarados situation, here the game tells the player the truth.
@@retro8754 Right! And I guess what irked you was the audio, Scott was the one who said Surf was neutral like Ice Beam vs Gyarados and that's not the case. I didn't reach that part of the video and fell asleep hence the lack of edit on my previous comment.
Scott does it again! Keep up the quality content man!! Love your enthusiasm. Commented awhile back that you inspired me to start my own channel and wanted to let you know I followed through, and my first video is queued to post in a few hours! We ADHD’ers can finish projects it seems haha thanks for making this a wholesome and welcoming community. Cheers.
10:41 There are plenty of hikers after that. Just take the few seconds needed to fight them and level up to 31. Then the obligatory water/grass trainers in the dark cave would take a lot less time.
Love your stuff, as always! Look forward to it every week
Poliwags facial expressions are so cute.!! Love the editing upgrade over time, these videos look better every time I watch ^.^ Also awesome run, fun to watch as ever.
I still remember being a little kid and poliwag being my favorite pokemon because of pokemon cards, he just looked so adorable 😍
Great video Scott!!
Back again just to say I really love your videos & the Pokémon portraits are still so cute, I always look forward to seeing their change in expression! Please keep this much detail, I love being able to see the stats and moveset update in real time too. Just love your channel!
Thanks so much kods, this comment really made me smile!
There aren’t just a lot of water Pokémon in the _Kanto_ Pokedex.
Water is _THE_ most common type in Pokémon. Ever.
Team Magma did nothing wrong!
@@mrb692 they literally tried to reactivate a volcano, which likely would’ve hit Lavaridge Town
It's not the most common in Kanto. Poison is more common, actually.
@@KainaX122 How many cities have been erased for the sake of putting in a dam? Lavaridge Town was a necessary sacrifice for the greater good (*the greater good*)!
Man I almost fell asleep when you talked about it. I will watch the rest in the morning
I love you art man :-D that angry poliwag looks like troubles. :-D
34:48 He said Youngster Joey! Ahahaha! That boy living in the hearts and minds of the people.
Man its truly awesome to see you are growing fast with subscribers and you deserve it my man😁
I love this little guy! (not as much as Nidoran) can't wait to have time to watch all of this when I'm back from Vacation on Sunday
Being called out here for falling asleep to the video last night and watching again. Damn, you got me dude.
Your videos are always premiering while im at my desk working and it gives me such a giddy feeling wanting to rush home and see where you had to reset to because you didnt save haha
Scott and JRose... Love these challenges! Glad to see the community of obscure early gen challenge runs growing :D
Yeah there are a lot new RUclipsrs making these kinds of videos now! Lots of content out there for everyone :)
Damn, while that start was a bit rough Poliwag really made up for it by the end, I'm impressed.
I love seeing a challenge with Poliwag involved. Poliwag is my all time favorite pokemon.
Great content as always Scott. I'm surprised psychic wasn't more integral! Especially loved the hammer away Papasea reference. Keep it up my man.
Thanks Paul! Yeah, I think I might want to go back and do another run with this guy just to try more Psychic and less Hypnosis! Maybe a “short” 10 minute Poliwag revisited video.
That would be rather intreging considering the accuracy issue with hypnosis.
I can't wait for this! Poliwag is one of my all time favorites. I watched vanmans video so I know it's gonna do well. So I'm looking forward to seeing if it goes well!
Special moves on that first eevee makes it rough to kill
Oof I know that pain of not having a save because I got over confident, good on you for powering thru!
Best birthday gift I got this year…. A new video from Scott!
Happy birthday Brandon!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon thank you Scott!
I just found out about this channel. I'm so excited to watch all of these runs. 😄😄😄
Enjoy :)
Thank you for the awesome content my dude!
Been feeling rough lately and then my WiFi decided to die for a day, I struggled a lot sleep without your videos in the background lol
You’re welcome! Sorry to here about the dead wifi. That really sucks :(
Hey Scott, hope all is well. Poliwag did way better than I thought, quite a surprise. Another great video, keep it up man!!!
I loved this video so damn much, poliswag my man
Did I miss the premiere? Oh no :<
Well, nothing's going to keep me from watching your work now. Always a pleasure to watch your semi scientific videos, scott!
I’m 28 and I binge watch these videos, that maybe why Im single but it’s worth it lol
Probably not, just haven’t found a cool enough person yet. ;)
Lol young as hell
Super young! I’m over here at the age of 36 watching these videos thinking about how a 28 year old would have been 4 when Pokémon R/B was released >.
There is some strange visual clipping in the beginning of this video. It occurs every time I render the video with premiere, but the original video files do not contain this error. If you know a solution, let me know so I can prevent this in the future!
1. Obviously Magikarp is the worst first-stage water-type. I didn't think this needed an additional line of dialogue to state. Apparently it did! Thanks for the comments though :)
Have you tried a quick fade in? Solves most of my visual errors.
Does it happen even if you just make a timeline of just the raw footage and re-export it?
Internet Historian said on his extras channel for the Costa Concordia video that it literally couldn't render a video because it had too many layers going at once, so they streamed the preview of the video and had their buddy record it, then uploaded that LOL
Oh. Also Denis.
@@parttimesaint3165 It's happening in the middle of uncut footage
dude im always looking forward to these videos, such high production quality and effort! its sad to think there is a day where you will run out of pokemon to finish yellow with but ofc there's other gens
Also other games in gen 1, and other types of challenges!
I absolutely adore the mental image of Giovanni, Team Rocket Boss, don of the Pokemon mafia, sending out a mighty and ferocious Nidoqueen, to send that pesky Poliwag packing once and for all, and he issues the command : "Scratch." and Nidoqueen has no choice but to daintily scratch the little Poliwag
I felt personally attacked when you said "you probably are waking up after falling asleep to the video." That's me legit every night 🤣
Scott is the best goddamn pokétuber out there! Praise Scott, Lord of all that is Poké
Thanks so much! I have so much respect for everyone else making content. I’m glad you’re enjoying my stuff so much that you’d say that!
I get way too excited for these videos
The first run was so good i forgot about the consistency tests 🤩
Glad you acknowledged that Hypnosis is a terrible, terrible move. Makes sense that it was filmed before the video that exposed its awfulness.
And it's just godlike that you didn't even bother using the Rare Candies before taking on the E4 and still won, despite the minor complications with the fourth member.
Hot damn, full HP on the Venusaur Oak fight.
It’s finally here. The 69th run. You crazy son of a gun, you did it
Commenting before the end - I expect Poliwag to crush this run. It has hypnosis and amnesia and access to psychic. The only thing that could be an issue would be Misty since there aren’t any setup moves yet
Hey man, I gotta say I really enjoy your videos. I've been watching these for quite a while now and with all the Poketubers out there I think you're putting the most effort into your videos or at least you're outputting the highest quality videos. I actually just only watch Jrose and your videos and initially I was a bigger fan of Jrose's videos but with your scientific approach to the videos (multiple runs, optimising them) and with all the quality information in your videos (possible moves and base and current stats) I gotta say your videos have become my favourite.
Just thought I'd leave this here because I like giving out sincere compliments and I'm sure reading something nice on the internet is rare enough. :)
Hasan piker is a capitalist and you unironically watch him.
Thanks so much for leaving this comment. It’s really nice to read how much you’re enjoying my content! Jrose still does a lot better than me in my eyes. I’m still chasing perfection and I’ll keep working towards it!
I always get Venomoth's typing mixed up, I keep thinking its poison/bug, but luckily I have these videos to set me straight.
I think you should try the amnesia Pysduck from Pokémon Stadium completion reward to see if all the work of 100% stadium was really worth it. It might be a beast.
Love the work Scott!!
"Waking up and watching this section in the morning after falling asleep to the video last night"
This is how I watch almost all your videos. :3
Great video. I'm curious if you'll choose psychic versus ice beam on round two for better coverage.
Also, I've become a huge fan of your Friday afternoon workday videos! Keep up the great work.
Just in time for my Drive home such great videos
I subscribed when you only had 4k subs. And at that time it was cringe at some times. But youre really improved so much since then. Great content, great graphics and great storytelling.
Damn, Poliwag is STRONG for a little guy. Absolutely tearing it up, despite struggling against that very first fight.
Just helping with the algorithm Scott! Poliwag gets slept on a lot in Gen 1
Scott: Hammer away
Me: just like nintended :V haha
Great video as always! Watching Poliwag absolutely wreck the game and my expectations was superb
Although my brother had a rough time with Poliwag, I overall recall a general fondness for the water type in Crystal version, so I expected good things... I certainly did not expect this level of a rampage. This forgetful hypnotist just tore through the game! Rather hilarious that with all it's impressive results, it's biggest obstacles turned out to be Ekans, Venonat and it's own inaccuracy with Hypnosis.
36:25 - Also, love the Fairy/Poison Venomoth design.
I think Poliwag is going to be doing great. :-) I think at least B Tier.
Great run! Poliwag, in my opinion, is among the best of gen 1! All because of amnesia, yes, it sure does all the difference! I was expecting such a good result of Poliwag! Certainly Poliwhirl may do even better, no doubt!
Hey Scott! Watched every video and I have so much respect for your process. You've been awesome and I really love your content
I have one suggestion for a video: Gen 1 contest of the Eevee-lutions, either starting with Eevee on each run or just Jolt/Flare/Vape
That one will happen eventually! I’m really excited for it.
good speed, decent move pool at least a B. physic, bubblebeam, animensia, bodyslam, ice beam, and hypnosis. I dont think a pokemon can ask for more even starts with bubble so brock will be a joke.
Ah yes, "Animensia"
I think he forgot the name of amnesia. How ironic.
Grammer Nazis in the comments if you can count on the internet as a whole to be one thing it is pedantic lol
@@TDMicrodork Has nothing to do with grammar nazis. It's the wrong word, simple as that. I mean fuck, Animensia ISN'T even a word in the first place. Additionally, no one writing a comment on the internet has to come up with stuff on the spot. Dude would have had all the time in the world to look up the name of the move Amnesia. If not that, he could have read his comment after posting it, realising Animensia is weird and edited the comment.
All of that being said, I think Animensia is incredibly fun to say, absolutely SHOULD be a word and we should all rename Amnesia for the joke.
Hope to see Krabby, it's stats should make it quite interesting.
So proud of this lil fella :')
Hey just want to say thanks for making your videos. Lol these videos help me fall asleep. Favorite Pokémon is Ho-oh and sableeye want to see a sableeye run
You’re welcome! Thanks for the positive comment Stephen!
46:53
How did you know I fell asleep and continued watching in the morning?!
Something I've noticed you doing in these runs that's slowing you down is that almost always whenever a pokemon's about to evolve, you cancel it. If you allow them to evolve they'll gain increased stats albeit often at the cost of increasing the level they learn moves. No need to thank me for discovering this cool run strat B)
For half of this, I was preparing my response. And then I realized just how genius this idea is.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Thanks, I call it the "evolution strat". Really helped with my own runs.
38:56 I agree with you at 100%, the backsprite of gen 1 poliwag looks more like a penguin than a tadpole
the poli line...is probably one of the best lines for solo runs...I can't think of many lines besides the nido's that can match them except maybe nidoran...
One thing your vids have taught me is that certain trainers (the rapping lass, the champ, etc.) actually have coherent strategies. It wasn't obvious at all when I was a kid and carried around a full team from Surge onward. Switching Pokemon just negates those strats, so this truly does feel like the way the game should be played.
Yeah, switching Pokémon and using items really negates some of the strategies, but they do feel coherent when you can’t switch out!
The Poliwag line is my favorite in gen 1. I've watched enough content where I think it's time to become a patron lol
Haha no obligation, keep enjoying for free if you’d like, but I would appreciate the support!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon nah bro, I'm a musician too. If someone watched 10 hour long sets that I was playing and didn't even pay the cover charge, I'd be meeting them out back with the bouncer XD
Nice! Poliwag is really good, because of access to amnesia. In general, access to a special stat boosting move and a sleeping move grantees an easy challenge, which is good once in a while. What's more amazing about this pokemon is that it's a first stage pokemon, that had a great time, even compared to pokemon in this gen that doesn't evolve. 🤔
Poliwag has almost no coverage, besides psychic, ice, and normal moves, but it works well for gen 1 playthroughs. I wonder how it would in a gen 3 playthough, without badge boost 🤔or both of it's evolutions up against each other in a gen 3 run.
Like always your bloopers were super hilarious, especially the poli-beam one. I think you should name your poliwhirl, poli beam. 😂Thanks for the good time, keep up the good work! 😁
this little tadpole thingy is surprisingly good. when you look at the stats and consider it's a first stage pokemon, you'd think it's destined to either struggle or be a middle of the road pokemon. really proves how broken sleep and amnesia are in Gen 1.
23:28 sick league art work love the old school esthetic.
Poliwag got that Poliswag. Doesn’t even need to evolve to bring in the heat. Lol it’s speed always amazes me.
"If you're watching this part of the video after falling asleep to it last night"
Ok but that's a hell of a callout
Scott tasting his pop filter is all I needed today
that plant lass certainly knows her pokemon can make it huge in the music business. they love to rap.
Nice! Poliwag is very impressive.
The repeated defeats at the start gave me a good laugh.
From other videos I have seen Poliwag is an absolute monster of a first stage 1 water.
You have done Poliwag, soon to release Poliwhirl, and a Poliwrath video
Looks like that Politoed vs Slowking videos coming right...........riiiiight....
Hello Scott and Denis!
What a day it's been that I haven't got my dose of Scott's Thoughts yet. Can't wait to check this out a little later this evening! Good luck little tadpole!
Edit: TadSWOLE! 😎
The fact you put crit chance next to the base speed is so smart. Way to think ahead bro
I would love one day to see a play through of shellder. I think he is an awesome pokemon. I have never seen anyone do a solo playthrough with a Shellder. Anyways poliwag and this playthrough rocks too.
Shellder soon.
I'm crying so much, Poliwag is my favorite pokémon
It’s becoming one of my favourites too! It’s a strong first-stage!
Gen I, where getting a critical hit is frustrating. Gotta love it. And gotta love Poliwag.
GRASS/MOTH!!!! That one got me good
Great video as always!
Thanks KangaskDan!
Before even watching this play through. I’m gonna say it’s more like a Poli-Swag run 😎
Okay, this is ridiculous your so good at this game. I don’t even know how but my man can solo emerald kaizo with a magikarp like ;-; but, can I recommend you try beat Pokemon crystal with only butterfree and beedril? A classic duo and it’ll be a fun challenge! Once again you are my favourite youtuber :>
Poor poliwag didnt even get to evolve after finally defeating mewtwo :(
Wow, I didn't expect poliwag to be so fast, he's faster than many fully evolved pokemon!
I'm really excited to see whether Poliwhirl will be able to dethrone tradeback Abra or not :D
Poliwag’s true power has been unleashed!
