Great realistic videos. Most people would have chopped this to make it look like it started on the first kick. Great how you just present reality in a down to earth way. Keep up the great work! Miss my 49 and 54.
I adore 49 Panheads. To me they are one of the nicest designed motorcycles ever built. The sound, everything, is quintessential Harley-Davidson. Outstanding machine!
Still love this bike , Todd . I'm sure it's long since been sold . It would make for a nice ride from Cali , to louisiana . With my wife on the back . Sightseeing .
most videos the guys start it up on the first kick I like a video actually see them trying to start the bike its boring when they starting the first kick cool video man
Looks like a lot of fun getting it started. DONT EVER USE ONE OF THESE FIR A FAST GETAWAY! I love the.the look and the stance u give after u started it, it was like" and thats how its done, now someone get the defibrillator "
as a kid , i watch my uncles and their friends kicknkicknkick and learned many cuss words, lol!! when i was 10 my uncle "let" me kick his pan, i got it going with 3 kicks, to say the least ,he was not amused. After that i was called to kick after everyone else had their try and i would see first if they turned on the gas, then see if it was flooded, and ALWAYS checked to see if it was retarded. i learned hand shifting waaaaay before foot shifting, lol!!
Never had a 1949 Panhead. But my first street bike was a 1976 XLCH.....kick start only. If you didn't time the kick (have it at the correct stroke ) just right... it would kick you back....and hard. I'm an old man now but I still ride. '97 WG. Really enjoy your videos. And what model was that you called it at 9:17 ???
it means it was replaced at some point in time. If the front fender is not original paint, chances are it was replaced after the recall at a time when it broke. the spot welds never held up very well. The front fender on this one is the factory replacement and is "correct" because of that and being the original factory Harley paint. Once the paint has been removed, unless you have written documentation from HD, no telling for sure when the fender was replaced
generally speaking, a Congo Green Pan in 1970 would be original paint. and, assuming it was original paint, then yours would have been one of the recalled fender's replaced in 1950. But, we are assuming. I cannot go back in time and 100 percent for sure say his was original paint. The chances are it was though. 1970 the bike was not worth much and only 21 years old. So, the chance of someone repainting it magically Congo Green is very small. HD, at this time, manufactured most of their parts, including sheet metal. it was not until the AMF era of the 1970's that many items were "farmed out". That said, HD has always bought accessory items from outside suppliers who then maybe or maybe not, put HD's name on them. The same is true of many other items. IE, speedo's were outside manufacture, tank badges also, etc etc.
Obviously you've not owned many Pans. Kick that much you've flooded nearly every Pan. But each starts unique. Pans are like that. Many different head types
That is one cool ass Harley man. I love those old bikes the antique bike shows are my favorite at the ralleys but man watching you kick that made me love my street glide even more. Lol I hate kicking I have a crf250 dirt bike that's a bitch to cold start. Once warmed it will bust off first kick but cold it will wear u out. I can only imagine kicking that big vtwin that much.
Im relatively new to the harley game I bought my first bike last year an 02 softail and I love it. I really wanna get an old panhead like this I'm just trying to get an idea what maintenance looks like? I appreciate your video uploads I really enjoy them.
nicholas muzzin ancient motor design. Easy to work on i guess, hard to keep up with compared to anything modern. Well you just saw this dude trying to start one for 10 min hahaha. Get an evo and be happy
There are over 1700 videos on this channel, most of which show me starting a motorcycle. If you knew old Pans, you'd know flooding was not the starting issue. However, the most popular videos are where the bike is giving me a problem. If you think Harley's magically start easy after sitting, even a couple of months, you are showing your ignorance of the machine, or anything mechanical
@@HuntingHarleys Well I have never owned a harley that's true. I have watched too many people kick their old harleys to exhaustion through the years while my faster more reliable jap bikes motored down the road. I love the harley sound especially at idle, that's why I watch these videos, but of the three videos of you, you struggled everytime. I would love to have a ww2 bike turned fat bobber, side shift, etc. But at 65 with artifical knees I don't think I would ever ride it. I almost bought one from a coworker when I was 23, but the owner who rode it daily struggled to start it. That fit in with everything I knew about starting one so I passed, I guess nothing much has changed...
Over 1700 videos. Most of them show finely tuned machines starting easily. Occasionally a mechanic fucked me, or in one case the long duration cam made kick starting a bitch. It's called sleep your machine tuned and learn how to start it. They have their individual temperament
I had a very similar but green 1950 EL which always started fine but lacked power (ex cop bike, 1000 cc) and later got chopped. You can see what it looked like before then at the beginning of my music video "Old Harley Breakdown Blues" on RUclips at @FLYA . Also check out "I Want to Ride" at @rWB0
Don’t say electric starters aren’t nice ! I would be on oxygen by now . Peace be with you my brother ! Harley riders stayed in good shape just starting their motorcycles . Best I can remember this was normal for most but especially new riders . Push start anytime this happens . Somebody in good shape ! Hahahahahaha 😂😅 ! Laughing with you !
Each Pan has their own preferred technique. Get it off, you get to kick, a LOT. Once you're familiar with that specific Panhead, they tend to start 1st kick.
this bike and your red 36 knuck and the bay area black wasseled knuck you and Duncan did are my three favorite bikes of all time , add to it a stroker racing flathead , and id rather have those 4 bikes than an entire Harley dealership of ANY new bikes ! even though I wouldn't piss on Duncan if he was on fire. wouldn't let the man sit on a damn tricycle if I owned it . on a bad day ! only thing id do to this bike would be a finned frt & rear cabbage cutter and a rear seat rail spot lights . and keep all the original parts.
add in my 42 john deere B model tractor , and a 41 H model with implements , 56 /427 chevy 4 speed truck with a/c , a 71 black 440 roadrunner , 64 /426 / sport fury 4 speed . all my woodworking and blacksmith machine shop equipment and carving tools , my carharrts and old levis. few handguns and rifles and ammo. only vehicles I give a damn to EVER own and I can work on em ALL myself on most things . move to 8,000 acres in Mindanao , philippines with my wife on a nice farm with a large pika house . freash seafood everyday , raise my own livestock , huge year round garden , no wintertime a gorgeous Filipino wife 14 yrs younger than me with a heart of gold , my kids and the family......what more do I possibly need ? live like a KING !
to start or not to start that is the question....I remember as a kid in the 60s watching my uncle spent an hour or more try to start his Harley after it had been sitting for a few weeks
I don't know about all these comments, but I'll tell you what I've owned many Panheads and every Panhead I've ever owned, it's got its own time, and when to start if it's not gonna start and it decides that don't wanna run that day. It's not gonna run, so figure out the pattern on how to start it and she will start for you. That old girl has probably been sitting a long time like the old boy said.
nice mashine but the first thing..i would add an electric starter and give an fuck if its longer original.riding it fully pumped out after hours of kicking.....no fun

I COULD FEEL YOUR PAIN! Brings back memories of life with the the kickstarters. Beautiful bike....thanks for posting!
Reminds me of my life. So many hours spent kicking. Am still panting from watching!
I absolutely love old Harley's, but the nostalgia ends for me at kickstarting!
You are a very determined kicker. My passion for vintage scoots would give me motivation too.
He earned that ride. I like the older bike's. I guess I'll never let go of mine.
Excellent bike and nice video! Thanks for hanging in there and getting her started. I feel your pain.

The front fender on my dad's '49 doesn't have the spot welds. What does that mean?

When my dad bought the bike back in 1970, it was the congo green color. So h-d wasn't the only manufacturer of front fenders in '49.

Thank you for the info; Can't wait to see greenie going up and down the road. Keep up with the videos and info; learning a lot.
Dennis Pond no problem!
I would like to see you start it again :-)
Hey i know you love answering questions …does this bike have a muffler cover ? Also do you know what year harleys did ? Was it 49 down ? Thanks !!
@chrisoconnell7749 this cover came out as an accessory mid 47. If fit any stock big twin muffler 41 to 49
I LOVE old Harley's and all Harleys. BUT good Lord who would want to go through that to take a ride! lol
BACK THEN YOU HAD NO CHOICE
My dream bike this and 66 fl shovel head
They sit for awhile and you gotta kick them over till the oil boils then one more kick. I have a bad hip joint due to and ol 61 XLH I owned for years.
When did Harley start making front hand brakes?
Federal law 1928, everyone did
linkert m74b starting prrocedure....ignition off choke on kick until you hear the wet splat sound. ignition on kick
Obviously you've not owned many Pans. Kick that much you've flooded nearly every Pan. But each starts unique. Pans are like that. Many different head types
you are right on bro
Painhead? Joking, really nice bike! :-)
Thus Electric Starters were created !
Was the paint chipped from the factory too?

Reminds me of starting the mower or weed eater.
WOW very nice bike.
should of asked buddy the sequence to start it...
those Linkard carbs do have a simple combination - just have to find it lol
Well done Kick man..
Thank the lord for electric start
Yep, just like my 63 duel point, a bitch to start. I had to wait til the sun warmed it up just so.
