It's ALMOST Perfect, BUT... MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi

  • The MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi is an amazing budget B650 motherboard, if not for the fact that much cheaper B650 motherboards exists. The MSI B650 Tomahawk specs are all well and good, however, with its current price, it does have some competition from other companies. Despite that, if you want a good MSI B650 motherboard, then this is one of the best ones!

As someone who actually owns a 7950X3D and a 4090, paired with the B650 Tomahawk, I can say it's an absolute beast and will give everything you'd expect out of a current top end system, there really is no need to go higher unless you REAAAALLLLY want that PCIe gen 5 upgrade path, which is definitely a want, not a need lol.
I do actually also run it with 3 M.2s, 3 FireCuda 530s, a 4TB, 2TB and 1TB, it handles the full speed of them so idk why this wouldn't be a thing. Why overspend on the board when this is capable of all the best anyway? They don't cut out lanes at all, the first 2 M.2 slots run direct to CPU and the 3rd is shared with the SECOND PCIe slot and runs through the chipset. The 1st and 2nd slot are not affecting the GPU at all. I experienced no performance change or change in benchmark results of any kind upon adding the 3rd M.2, which proves this.

I just can't decide which motherboard to take, everyone has an unique opinion on it and they're all different... Reliability-wise(tests,statistics,review) and feature-wise, which B650 and X670E motherboard would you recommend to someone who simply wants an adequate motherboard that will last a long time and is actually futureproof? What I mean by that is, I'd like to get my money's worth, and that would mean minimum 10 years, because right now I still have an i5 4460 and a Asrock z97 pro4 and they served me extremely well for 8 very busy years, however, that setup cost HALF of what the next one will cost, times were different, but now? If they're gonna take so much money from me, I demand 10 years of service from these components, which motherboard do you think can live up to those demands? Except the high-end ones, of course, my wallet is not interested in those

Sorry guys I didn't see the replies, after a ton of research I decided to find the best cheapest X670, cuz mid range is poor value, and high end is not even an option, I'll take the same approach with a GPU likely, maybe even RAM and case, Giving 150 bucks for a case was fine with me until now, but now I'll settle for s 70dollar case and non rgb EVERYTHING, because buying a nice reliable pc is apparently a pipe dream, it cant be done. I'll rather gsmble on cheaper parts and have it last 3-5 years than to go balls to the wall with the budget, I'll save roughly 30%of the budget that way, put it towards a future rig in 5 years, its a smart thing to do

The MSI has 6 SATA, ALC 4080 and Realtek LAN. 2 USB2, 7 USB3 and 1 USB-C. It also has Optical Audio out. The ASUS has ALC 1200 (nominally worse than the MSI but in practice no difference and less chances of problems!) Realtek or MT Wifi, only 2 USB3 but therefore it has 2 USB-C (one with 20GBps). On Paper the MSI is more compelling. I would get the MSI and in case you run into problems, consider switching to the ASUS. Asus also has the ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming. That board has more goodies. It has the same ALC 4080 as the Tomahawk (might run into problems) and it has Intel Lan, which ASUS uses for its higher priced boards. Some people say that the Intel Lan is prone to causing problems.

How do you feel about the fact it has no PCIe 5.0 support? I assume a lot of people that invest into a 'more' expensive B650 bord (and AM5 in general) choose that path because of several years of platform support. Wouldn't it be smart to get a motherbord that supports (future) PCIe 5.0, like for instance the ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WIFI, which costs the same.

Pcie 5.0 SSDs dont deliver a huge perf difference compared to 4.0 ones. Just like 4.0 over 3.0. Unless you are constantly moving terrabytes of files from A to B, theres not a big advantage. And Pcie 5.0 for the GPU will approxamatly only be relevant in 2024 (1-2% margin like 4.0. vs 3.0 on 4090 now), maybe a bit more in 2026. But its not worth it to spend like 100$ more for a feature of the future, that has almost no perf impact anyway.

But for overall heavy duty workloads that requires multiple threads, the i7 beats the ryzen 7000s. Even the 13600K is an amazing choice in productivity+gaming. But if you're only gaming, Ryzen 7000s are the way to go. the elite ax board has such a crappy lame audio that even gigabyte don't say in their site which codec it uses. Because it's total GARBAGE. And they as 230 us$ for that?

@blue-lu3izthe asrock pg riptide wifi also comes with 8 layer pcb and more reliable than gigabyte I think.

@blue-lu3iz But is it worth it ? Because 6000mhz is the sweet spot now. When more Ram OC comes into play it won't even be worth it rather than changing the board I guess.

I love what this board has to offer, but..
6 layer PCB and no PCIe Gen 5 support.
    Still a very good motherboard.

Istg it's not even a big thing to consider. See current gen gpus can also work on the gen3 pcie with 5-10% less performance but still pretty solid. I'm guessing the next gen would be the same. anyways I'm getting this motherboard and hoping that it delivers for the next 5-6 years until my next build

Other boards don't have storage options as this one... And it's sad to see only 4 sata ports on most others 6 is minimum for me!
