    You get a gold star for the remarks at the end, showing another way to mess up. Wow, if that got missed the engine could starve and die within days, and the shop owner would need his liability insurance. Nobody who watched this video will ever make that mistake.
    I was just thinking about how elegant it is to avoid timing belts, but good design should also make it almost impossible for a mechanic to assemble the engine wrong.

    Yes John. It is beveled on both sides. I'd bet if you bought from HD today (not old stock inventory) you would find they bevel both sides. Many HD part numbers start life as one number then they started adding letters to the end to let you know it's a modified update.

    Could you please show how to check the breather gear end-play? In the factory service manual it's the first step in re-assembly.

    Shane, your thoughts on why you didn't get rid of the plastic breather valve? I'm getting ready to change out the cam to the EV-27 on my 98 RK. Also any thoughts on milling the heads for horsepower? Thanks.

    Did you say the crankcase breather shim isn't directional? I thought most of them are: the inner chamfered/beveled edge goes towards the breather. At least they do on the 92 and earlier. I have however noticed the thicker S&S aftermarket steel ones are beveled on both sides so it would make no difference, they're non-directional. To be honest I don't know on the 93 up, they may also be chamfered on both sides. Is that the case with this engine?

    Super-informative thank you - just had my oil pump drive fail (perhaps debris from the inner cam bearing got jammed in the gears and sheared the key?) so need to get into the cam chest and see what's going on. Pffff

      Bit late but might help someone - the nylon breather gear had lost about three teeth and the drive key had sheared. Whilst I was in there I changed the inner cam bearing to a Torrington/Koyo B138 as the original plastic cage ones are known to fail with age.

    Great video. Can you post one on how to set the cam gear timing on front and rear intake and exhaust for a 86 evo 1100?

  • @MrRockinbob77

    Shane, I was wondering does it matter which stroke the engine is on when yo insert the cam? can you be 180 degrees off?

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  9 лет назад

      A little late reply, 😁 you can't do it wrong if you line the dots up. The primary nut on the crank is keyed and only goes on one way.

      This is an old video. Try the newer stuff in the Harley playlist. I will tell you one time though, your welcome to point out mistakes, but do so in a helpful or detailed way. This channel is a community of mechanics helping each other.

      Sylvain Blaney You heard it right. But listen again. Not what I would set at but page 3-1 in service manual part no 99482-94.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  6 лет назад

      Sylvain Blaney No worries. .010” is exactly my aim too. This is a pretty old video on the channel I have a much newer series. It was worth grabbing a manual looking up just to be sure. I’m human and sometimes there are some mistakes. Hope you subscribe and enjoy the channel.

      I always have students like yourself that seem get to satisfaction in listening to the lesson and then repeating back the obvious. Did you watch the entire video? These videos and lessons are for often showing "how not to do something".
      Enjoy the free videos.

      Harley Man59 Dude it was caught and the instructor was man enough to show a mistake, you've never made one? I appreciate that he did that and know that I have to be very aware and check and re-check... Thanks Shane, great videos and even though the student caught it I would bet you would have at some point, and if not, another great video lesson!
