Quintessential Canadian Rockers April Wine to be inducted to Canadian Music Hall of FameThe Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) is pleased to announce the induction of hard-rock band, April Wine, to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In 2009, the group marked its 40th anniversary a celebrated span of time that has produced an impressive repertoire of hits among its 16 studio albums all which have surpassed gold status. April Wine will receive their honour at THE 2010 JUNO AWARDS in St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador, on Sunday, April 18th during CTVs live broadcast.
April Wine formed in late 1969 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but vocalist/guitarist Myles Goodwyn, guitarist David Henman, drummer Ritchie Henman and bassist Jimmy Henman soon moved to Montreal. "Fast Train," their first hit, appeared in 1971, the same year as the self-titled debut album. Jimmy Henman left soon after and was replaced by Jimmy Clench. The next year brought the band's first Canadian number one single, "You Could Have Been a Lady," from On Record. David and Ritchie Henman left before the next album, Electric Jewels, could be recorded; they were replaced by Jerry Mercer and Gary Moffet. After April Wine Live (1974) and Stand Back (1975), Steve Lang replaced Clench, who left to join Bachman-Turner Overdrive and later Loverboy. In 1976, The Whole World's Goin' Crazy became the first Canadian album to go platinum and their resulting tour was the first to gross one million dollars. Forever for Now appeared in 1976, followed by April Wine Live at the El Mocambo in 1977. Guitarist Brian Greenway was added that same year, making the band a sextet. After 1978's First Glance and 1979's Harder...Faster, "Just Between You and Me" became April Wine's biggest U.S. hit. The single (one of three Top 40 American singles by the band) propelled 1981's Nature of the Beast to platinum-record status. Power Play followed in 1982, and 1984's Animal Grace was their last album. Myles Goodwyn recorded his first self titled solo album in 1988. Four years later, all the original members joined for a Canadian tour, which convinced them to resume recording. "If You Believe in Me," the band's first single in eight years, was followed by 1993's Attitude. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

That statement is just simply not true at all. The pa systems at that time for most bands were so distorted that while the song was recognizable, it could never match 'exactly what you heard on the album". There are exceptions, but we'll into the 80s the rock concert stadium sound was famously distorted. Concert sound these days is far superior. Sorry man.

The place, A local high school located in Ville LaSalle, Quebec
back in the early 70's is where I and all my school friends first heard this amazing band.
Can you just imagine, being in that school with April Wine?
They blew everyone away, I am so very happy April Wine went on
and became Super Rock Stars. I saw this band BEFORE they became famous, They played at a local school in the gym, None of us had mobile phones back then.
When April Wine was finished their very first song, all of us were like JAW DROPPED - TOTALLY LIKE - WHO ARE THESE GUYS????? Then they played their second song, it was just awesome, we were jumping - screaming, WHAT AN AMAZING BAND.
Hey if any of the guys in the April Wine reads this do drop me a message.

Jerry Merser's youngest son Sean is also a drummer and is the former drummer of a couple of close friends of mine. He actually jammed with us one night about a year ago before this corona crap started. Very good drummer. I also met Jerry at the old bourbon street in Pointe claire and spoke to him after AW's set. No Myles..Jerry was a gentlemen, and an extremely hilarious guy. He also played a killer set. He's probably the most powerful drummer from Montreal that I've ever seen, and at the time he was pushing 70 !! As a drummer myself I've always been influenced by certain aspects of his playing, such as his sense of creating unique rhythmic patterns and odd time signatures..

The soloing has a Southern Rock/Allman Brothers Band-sound to it. I watched the April Wine doc/tribute to Myles Goodwyn last night. And discovered the reason why they started getting a 'harder' rock sound was because of Moffet's contribution, I think. They said he was "well versed" in 'American' music. That can only mean he knew 'American'-rock thoroughly, and it reflected in his playing. So, it's not a surprise to me to hear you say it reminds you of a warm summer day. That's exactly what most of the 'Allman'-sound sounds like, and other Southern Rock as well. Lots of Major-sounding keys with bluesy sounds melded into it. Then when you inject a rythym into it like they were capable of doing, weĺl, WHAM! You get a great 1970s Rock song! My first exposure to April Wine was an 8-track of "Harder, Faster" in 1980 to 1981, after my older brother came home from U.S. Navy service/N.O.B. NORFOLK, VA. He had that one, Led Zeppelin 4, AC/DC Highway To Hell & If You Want Blood/live album. My KISS Dynasty album started gathering DUST after he let my younger brother and I start borrowing those 8-tracks! 😅😅😅

New to April Wine, loving their stuff. I'm American, but my Dad grew up in Michigan, and I'm in Michigan now, and I just love how we get the Canadian bands on the radio here in Michigan, and yes, there are some absolutely fantastic bands/artists from Canada. Kim Mitchell, Chilliwack, The Guess Who, BTO, Crash Test Dummies, and April Wine. Definitely leaving some good ones out, but, thanks for introducing me to great music, music that you can not only hear, but feel as well.

I am 50 years old and lead a rock band that has been entertaining the city and the area where we come from for 10 years. Wife (50) is backing vocals, older son (28) guitar, younger son (24) drums, I play lead guitar, neighbor is on keyboards, and his brother is bass guitar. Family business. This song is one of the main ones at the opening of our concerts! (I advertised myself a bit, but it doesn't matter 😄)

Takes me back to the time I had a summer job as a CPR railway porter in my University days. The rule was that we couldn't sleep more than 3 hrs. a night, en route, which was virtually impossible to observe. The "rhythm of the rails" is absolutely mesmerizing. A songwriter can't go wrong with a "train song." The City of New Orleans was an instant classic. And I've heard 97 different versions of The Orange Blossom Special and have yet to hear a bad one. It's the popular music counterpart of The William Tell Overture. I realize this April Wine ditty is not, strictly speaking, a "train song" but, IMHO, the lyrics are almost superfluous. Since I'm only semi-familiar with this song I'll have to listen to it again to find out what it's all about!

    • @essessessesq

Damn, I found out super late. Roller and this came on the radio today.
My mom saw AW play at their high school way back when, and when I got the chance to volunteer for stagehand work at a festival they were headlining in 2016, I asked Myles if he would say hi to my mom because "my goodness, she'd melt!" He said yes and when they were loading out leaving the venue at the end of the night, I told her to wait at a specific spot where they would depart, and he came out and said hi. She'll never forget that, and neither will I.
RIP Myles Goodwyn, your music is a Canadian treasure.

I know it's probably cliché, but my HS sweetheart of 3 yrs...our song was "Just Between You & Me". We spent every waking moment attached at the hip...I think about him often and even after 37 yrs, whenever I hear April Wine, all those memories come flooding back.. There's nothing like your first love. He actually contacted me online a couple yrs ago and we had a nice, long, harmless chat...cleared up some old misunderstandings and told each other that we were each other's first real love. Just finished playing this song on my FM radio show and interviewing Ritchie Ranno. Nice guy.
