My dad died from dementia in February2020. He he couldn't tell me what my name was. But I could put this song on, and he would perk up and sing every word of this song, and tell me the names of every member of this band. What an evil illness dementia is. I'd sacrifice 10 of my years to have one good week with my dad again. 😪

The entire ERA of Guess Who, Loving Spoonful, Blood Sweat and Tears etc was one of the greatest musicianship, writing, and simple yet effective production standards that seldom disappointed. Combined with the authentic soul music coming out of "tap" at full throttle and a vibrant folk music scene it was simply the best of everything.

This is f*cking rock and roll - those acoustic guitars, that straight drum beat including those caveman single stroke fills around the drums - with those cymbal crashes on the snare cracks, that bass is super smooth like spreading room temperature butter on toast, did I mention the acoustic guitars ?! New Mother Nature is driven* by those drums and bass - that *keyboardist sprinkles those nice key runs perfectly. The lyrics and singing are perfect ! Lyrics. Enjoy
    Lonely feeling deep inside
Find a corner where I can hide
    Silent footsteps crowding me
Sudden darkness but I can see
No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me
In the silence of her mind
Quiet movements where I can find
Grabbing for me with her eyes
Now I'm falling from her skies
No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me
Jocko says yes, and I believe him
When we talk about the things I say
She hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
When they're standing in each other's way
You're tripping back now to places you've been to
You wonder what you're gonna find
You know you've been wrong but it won't be long
Before you leave 'em all far behind
'Cause it's the new Mother Nature taking over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new Mother Nature taking over
    She's gettin' us all
    She's gettin' us all
Jocko said no, when I came back last time
    It's looking like I lost a friend
No use callin' 'cause the sky is fallin'
And I'm getting pretty near the end
    A smoke-filled room in a corner basement
    The situation must be right
A bag of goodies and a bottle of wine
We're gonna get it on right tonight
'Cause it's the new Mother Nature taking over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new Mother Nature taking over
    She's gettin' us all
    She's getting' us all
Jocko says yes and I believe him
(Deep inside) when we talk about the things I say
(Find a corner) she hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
(Where I can hide)when they're standin' in each other's way
(Silent footsteps) you're driven back now to places you've been to
(Crowdin' me) you're wonderin' what you're gonna find
(Sudden darkness) you know you've been wrong and it won't be long
(But I can see) before you leave 'em all far behind
'Cause it's the new Mother Nature takin' over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new Mother Nature takin' over
She's gettin' us all, yeah, she's gettin' us all
    Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (Mother Nature)
    Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (nature)
    Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (sugar)
    Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (sugar)
    Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (sugar)

Kirstyn Blake I too saw them in Rhode Island only the year was 1983, I was 17, and it was at an amusement park no longer in existence called Rocky Point. Also playing that day ... Steppenwolf, Blue Oyster Cult, and Aerosmith. Although the latter only managed to get halfway through their first song after the lead singer, Steven Tyler, collapsed and fell off the stage into the audience. Later we found out he had overdosed and was rushed to a hospital. If memory serves the song he was singing when he dropped was "Lighting Strikes" ... and apparently it did. Good times.
Rock on Kirstyn, it's clear you have a cool dad.

I grew up listening to all genres of music and learned over the years that if you listen real closely, and yes, you might have to a few times to understand the message that is being sent through the lyrics of the song. And if you get the message and understand it then you can learn to appreciate it. I always tell my kids that music is much more than somebody writing words on paper and coming from someone's mouth. It's also gotta have the right sound to go along with it to make sense.
I think songs from the 50's through the 70's were the best of their time. 80's,90's awesome,2000- present gets even better . Sorry for the long reply, but I enjoy music and I get in a good mood when I hear songs that still get played even to this day. 😎 Rock on

A great one/two knockout punch by the Guess Who. It's a crime they're not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Such a great song, and it hasn't lost a thing over the decades. In fact, when you compare it to much of what passes for popular music these days, well, there IS no comparison.

In 1989, I was 17. My first car was an old 1977 Dodge Aspen. It had an old AM radio. The first song that I heard, the first time I drove my own car, was THIS song! or songs? They usually go together. In this case, they were together. No Sugar/New Mother Nature. Great record!!!

Even as a six year old kid, I remember this as my favorite song. Hearing sugar over and over at that age is intoxicating. I would hum those lyrics all day and night after hearing it on the radio. Little did I know what sugar really meant. So, here we are 50 years later to the month when this was released. It's just as catchy now as it was then. It's relevant to what I was experiencing as a child as it is an adult. This is the power of great timeless music.
