I have the FX3 and sold it to my local camera shop and got a FX30 instead. Just being able to use both crop and full frame lenses was a big deal for me and I fine most of the cube lenses I want are for super 35. And yes the FX3 does have a super 35 mode you can put it in BUT, it won’t let you shoot in 4K only 1080p.
I have an a7iv but looking to buy a second camera. The FX30 features that the a7iv doesn't have are tempting (luts, 4k 120fps, tally lights, internal fan, etc) However, I love having a mechanical shutter, ff sensor, 33mp for cropping later... It's a tough one honestly. Both have pros and cons.
Hi i will buy a camera,,i like a7iv but with that overheat issues...mmm....I liked the cooler system of fx30 but no having mecanic shutter and i readed i may cause some artifacts on photos with electronic shutter,,its that true? thanks
Finally a truly honest review of these two cameras that are dividing so many video makers, thanks Ben! I am just curious to know if the A7iv overheating is an issue you have encountered yet and in case how much that should be taken into account before purchasing it.
Thank you! 🙌 I have only had the A7IV overheat on me once and it was when I was filming in 105 degree heat for almost 5 hours! And I let it sit for 3 minutes and it was good! So I think you would not need to worry about it at all honestly!
@BenGleasonMedia Hi Ben and thanks for your feedback. Wow 105°F is 40°C and it's a very interesting test. I am very perplexed about the A7iv as online you hear 50% of the users not mentioning any issue and the other 50% having hard times with frequent overheating. I don't know what to think about this camera. It aims to follow the legacy of the wedding best seller A7iii but if the overheating issue is so frequent as reported by many users it spoils the whole usage and the other beautiful features it has. Do you think what I read on the web is just an "overheating phobia" or is it a real thing? Thanks again for taking time to reply ;)
It depends on where you plan to shoot and in what codec or frame rate you intend on shooting. But when it overheated on me that one time I was in the highest recording codec and shooting 4K 60fps! I think in a practical shooting sense you will not have an issue. I think the people that complain about the overheating are using that camera in extreme conditions or don’t know how to setup the camera properly to avoid overheating!
@BenGleasonMedia I'm totally with you in your reasoning. That's exactly what I call "overheating phobia"🤣 Thanks for sharing your point of view and user experience, really appreciate that!
hey hey....have you ever shot with them in 1080p 30fps/60fps? I sometimes have to shoot on HD and give raw footage to clients on 1080p- I prefer the cinema style of the FX30 for sure...
How's the A7iv S35 mode vs the FX30? Without using Clear Image Zoom, because that uses some magic sauce of downsampling and referencing pixels on the outside of the frame.
Is the autofocus system in both of these cameras both the same or does the FX30 have more advanced autofocus technology (i.e., newer generation)? Thanks!
The FX30 has 425 phase detect autofocus points! And the A7IV has 759 phase detect autofocus points! Given that the A7IV is a full frame sensor and the FX30 is S35 im not sure how you would compare those but to me they seem almost identical in performance! 👍
Thanks for the comparison. I thought I would get the fx30 but I see now that the a7 iv will be a better fit for me. Can you tell me if I shoot in vertical if the movie files will be coded to have been shot in vertical or I will have to flip them in post production?
How did you get your Rode sounding so great? Is it the VideoMic NTG? That’s what I have been using for years. Maybe it helps that you’re not yelling into it lol and not straight down the tip of it. I use a pop filter though. It just gets a bit crunchy and spspspsps sometimes.
If you want a good prime lens to go with your camera (which many people do), comparable ones for the FX30 are half the weight and half the cost of those for the a7iv.
I'm really confused, the a7iv is almost the same price as the FX30 in my country. $2000 vs $1800, I currently have 2 Apsc prime lenses because I have an a6400. I don't know if it would be worth selling my lenses to buy FF and go for the A7iV or go for an FX30 and keep the a6400 in case I need to take photos. I am currently a hybrid 65% video, 35% photo. what do you recommend?
I personally don't think it's that crazy of a comparison! Like I am looking at getting my first camera and considering just these two because out of all the systems to "commit" to, Sony seems like the best in terms of lens options and what I would personally need in the future... Like I would basically use it for my Disc Golf RUclips Channel (currently just using my phone) which is slightly vlog style, and all outdoors throughout the year... (so a fan might be nice for overheating) If going the FX30 I would definitely want to get the top handle because in the next year or two I want to try and make some doc style content and having pro audio being straight in would be a plus. But at the same time I'm wondering if it would be worth just paying the extra few hundred bucks to get the A7iv and just start with a full frame system? Like in a year or two would if I get an fx30 would I want to upgrade to full frame anyways? or would it be worth it to do stick with the FX30 for the audio handle and the better video features to grow into? But I would also enjoy to use it for photography/vlogging for personal use, so would the A7iv be a better option for that with better photography and low light for family vlog stuff? That's just what I keep going back and forth on... My paranoid overanalytical thoughts... 😂😂 So hearing your thoughts on this comparison was really helpful for me! Especially as someone who has never owned a legit camera and just binges a lot of RUclips about them 😂😂
Happy you enjoyed the video! I honestly feel the same way as you do between these two cameras, that’s why I never really chose a winner between the two! Full-frame is definitely more timeless if you are trying to get a camera that will survive the next five years or so! The FX30 is great as well though 😅
The FX30 is a unique camera because if you know you wan't it. you know you want it. 4 Channel audio, XLR inputs, front recording button, custom LUTs, box shape, extra rigging wholes, cine IE workflows. Besides, you learn cinema workflows. I would say, if you already have FF Sony Glass go A7IV, if not go FX30. I think FF has spoiled us, people go out there I feel the don't need any light.
Prises are not MSRP, in my place fx30 is more than a7iv, and canon r6 mii for example costs more or the same as both a7siii and r5 (used a7iii is 1000-1200$), so price i think is out of a equasion in such a comparaion. (i can buy a7siii new for 100-200$ more than fx30 with handle)
LUT support alone is massive. You can import whatever luts you want and those LUTs will be visible on ANY monitor whether it has lut support or not. Not only that, you can also bake-in whatever lut you want directly in-camera so you get all the benefits of Slog3 along with all the benefits of old picture profiles that people enjoyed because of the easier workflow. Meaning you don’t need to sacrifice dynamic range for an easy workflow anymore. Don’t get me wrong the a74 is a beast, I’ve used it on several shoots and it holds up well (except one time when constantly overheated on me…ive never been more annoyed). But other than that its fine. I just think anyone who does video at the professional level is much better off with the fx30 Also for the record, the fx30 is actually very good in low light. If you know how to use CINE EI, you can get amazing low light footage.
Hi Ben, ok ultimately I want to film wildlife but I also want to get starting on video. I agree with you that these 2 cameras don't actually compete. I think a better vs is the fx3 and a7 iv as the are both full frame and then the a7 iv is probably the budget option. For me low light is important but just because I'm starting out I still don't want to buy an entry level camera as you just loose to much on sell your gear. So I think starting off with 10 bit and 120 fps even in FHD is also important as is 4k 60. it is really a hard choice and although full frame is better I also think it will be interesting to see what the a6700 and fx10 comes with as they should be even cheaper. but yeh it looks like the a 7iv at the moment but then as you mention is those out options f.... not easy maybe I should just save up for the fx3 😂
Either would be great, but my pick would be the FX30 because it’s lighter and has cheaper lens options! Allowing you to spend more money on set design and lighting! 👍

I got the FX30 over a month ago and it's my first Sony camera. I've seen a few videos on the dual base ISO and commented that I don't think people were using the camera as intended on a couple of channels. Watching the Sony channel video on how to use SLog3 for better results when shooting and grading later. Cine EI is more for a professional setup where you can control the lighting when filming. From the video, ruclips.net/video/R_b2uCCjhfQ/видео.html they cover different scenarios for shooting. I have tried the Cine EI mode in some low light situations and got some pretty good results. I posted a video on that on my channel. This was the first time I actually tried out the Cine EI mode, this was not a studio setting, I was out and about when I did it and I was using the Sony 15mm f/1.4 lens. The FX30 isn't for everyone, while it can shoot photos (great ones at that) and videos for the normal user, it is so much better once you know how to use it.
